Reading confirmed their third signing of the summer transfer window earlier this week with the capture of Pavel Pogrebnyak on a free transfer. After finally being granted a work permit, the 28-year-old arrives on a four-year deal and follows Garath McCleary and Danny Guthrie to the Madejski as Brian McDermott goes about bolstering the Royals first-team options for the season ahead.

The deal is a major coup for the promoted club – Pogrebnyak was expected to sign a permanent deal at Fulham after his hugely successful loan spell at the Cottage last term but, after meeting with owner Anton Zingarevich, decided to opt for Reading instead. A clearly delighted McDermott, enthused over the player’s acquisition, went on to say:

Pavel is exactly the kind of player that we need. I know him really well as a player and have been watching him closely for some time. I believe he is a ‘Reading’ player in that he works very hard for the team. He’s a team player and he can also score goals….We’re delighted. It’s been a long process to get Pavel to the club and now he’s officially a Reading player and everyone is looking forward to working with him.

The Statistics

Pogrebnyak started playing at the age of six for the Spartak Moscow football school and rose up through the ranks before making his first-team appearance at the age of 19. He failed to convince, though, scoring just twice in 18 matches and was farmed out on loan to a variety of teams over the next three campaigns before being snapped up by Russian outfit Tom Tomsk in 2006. He lasted just a season, scoring 13 goals in 26 games, before Zenit St Petersburg came calling. Over three campaigns he racked up 39 goals in 90 appearances in all competitions before Pogrebnyak then moved to the Bundesliga to join Stuttgart.

His time in the German top-flight failed to harvest the goals, though; the Russian found the net just 15 times in 68 league games before making his way to Fulham midway through last season. At the Cottage, he wasted little time in settling in, grabbing six goals in just 12 games – an average of 4.5 points per game in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game was second only to Clint Dempsey for Martin Jol’s side before Pogrebnyak’s loan deal expired at the end of the season.

The Prospects

Certainly, Pogrebnyak looks nailed-on to be installed as one of Reading’s front two for the season ahead. McDermott favours a 4-4-2, with plenty of crosses from out wide and a conventional front two leading the line – with the Russian set to be handed the target man role, a drop down the pecking order for Jason Roberts looks on the cards at the Madejski. The Reading boss will be hoping his new signing can bolster an attack that scored just 69 times last season; considerably less than fellow promoted clubs Southampton (85) and West Ham (81) and a stat that is likely to make Fantasy managers think twice over investing in the Royals’ attacking options.

Bearing in mind he is turning out for a promoted side, a price of 5.5 looks the most likely valuation for Pogrebnyak. His form for Fulham suggests he could flourish as a cut-price alternative next term, though the downside is a lack of spot-kick duties, with Ian Harte the club’s number one penalty taker. Fantasy managers shopping around for value forwards from the promoted clubs will perhaps be more inclined to lean towards Rickie Lambert – the Southampton forward is nailed-on for spot-kicks under Nigel Adkins.

A double Gameweek 1 may tempt many to take a punt on Pogrebnyak, though. Reading play host to Stoke before travelling to Chelsea before their schedule stiffens. With a trip to Sunderland, a blank Gameweek and home clashes against Spurs and Newcastle by Gameweek 6, Pogrebnyak will need to bring his Fulham form to the table in order to justify his inclusion in our teams over the opening part of the season.

      A) Who could afford him?
      B) Teams who can afford him dont really need a striker.

If he were to come to the prem, his most likely destination would be spurs.

Well looks like I will be rotating QPR and Wigan, should have players in the 4.5m range, were tight at home end of last season and rotate well. Not sure if I have the balls to double up though?

    Till GW21 Wildcard

SWA, sot, STO, CHE, FUL, WHM, EVE, EVE, WHM, RDG, WBA, SOT, RDG, sun, AVL, QPR, FUL, new, WBA, LIV

The toughest game looks to be Chelsea but in the same fixture last season QPR kept them at bay.

Maicon to Chelsea & Adebayor to Spurs should be done in the next week or so..

Don't think Maicon will be 1st choice though, he's on the decline, but it does make Ivanovic less appealing than he was before.

Wonder what Adebayor's price will be in FPL, because Spurs have great fixtures and he's on pens. Had a great season last year in terms of goals and assists.

Chelsea don't need him. He is too young and raw for them, imo.
He is so expensive not because he is so good, but mostly because prices for Russian players in the Russian Premier League are pushed up because of the oil money and the limit on foreign players.
Still, he should become a top player if he keeps working hard and doesn't do an 'Arshavin'.

Nah, that's either CSKA or Spartak. Zenit don't have any Brazilians at all.

Just thought that you most likely watched them in the international competitions, where there are no restricitions, so more than 6 foreigners on the pitch were possible there.

A lot here don't like the format at all. Resistant to change of course, like all human beings.

It's actually quiet a good format though, a little more nuanced than FPL with limited transfers and different bonus system.

Also, the prizes are brilliant, as you pointed out.

See, one does not score sh!tloads of goals in the Dutch league and in the international scene with no finishing ability. As I said below, with the absence of technically skilled players to link up with him, he was left with too much to do, and yet he displayed his sublime finishing skill time and again (FA Cup goal vs Stoke, lob over Ruddy). I think he will thrive if and when we buy a good AM (which should be within a few days).

He will, imo. I think he lacks a good strike partner -- some one who can do the "link-up play" as good as he does, which is why he has to do all the dribbling and twisting and turning. However, once we sign a good AM/ST, he will be able to play the role which he plays in the Uruguayan NT and that, I think will be beneficial to Liverpool as a whole.

See Parm's spreadsheet. The idea is you pick keepers/defenders from two cheap but defensively solid teams that rotate home/away so, with the odd exception like Utd at home, you always play the home defenders.

Zlatan, do you really trust Swans def this season? For one they will be overpriced after last season's success.. And on top of that, Rodgers has moved on and in comes Laudrup.. I'm just not sure if an investment of that scale would be worthwhile.

Depends where he goes. I wouldn't blame him, he clearly likes playing with RVP a lot and is starting to really prove himself. Only question is where? Do Chelsea need/want him? Man U don't,Liverpool isn't a step up from Arsenal eve with out RVP, ditto Spurs (probably). I'd sit for another year if I were him and then see how things are in January.

    By GW2 will you have?

    A) Aguero
    B) Rooney
    C) Both

I would ideally like C but depending on cash restraints may have to do Aguero > Rooney as my transfer. Saving money to upgrade Torres > Rooney is the ideal situation.

How does the first week work?
Can you buy/sell as soon as site opens?
Once you've picked the team can you do transfers?
I'm wondering if there's any benefit to picking the team early as I'm going to be in Cuba until early August & probably wont have much internet access....

Appears to be a war going on to sign up RVP - City, Utd, Barca, Juve & PSG..... Good news... close to £30M would be immense biz for a crock.

I think you'll be lucky to get over £20m tbh. The weak Euro also means he'd effectively cost more for European teams.

Perhaps there is something in this 'Money ball/soccernomics' theory.

Strikers are overvalued, far too much emphisis is based on previous performance & sell at players highest value.

If RVP's sale covers the purchase of Giroud & Podolski, looks like good business to me.

Problem is that there aren't many players at RVP's level, there are a lot more at Giroud/Podolski level. I think if you're trying to win titles it's better to have 1 top, top player than 2 top players.

Some have argued that with the level of service that RVP gets he actually should have scored more. Or any good striker should match that number of goals.

Interesting. A team that is pretty much set up around him, that plays for him & he scores plenty.

Football history is littered with players joining team for astronomical fees then not performing. Maybe every team has their modern day failure. Except Liverpool who have a whole team of them;)

I think what I'm trying to say is a player doesn't always perform at the same level when moving.

Depends if anyone else (Dzeko/Tevez) move on. Even if just Dzeko leaves there will be RVP/Tevez/Aguero/Balotelli..
