Daniel Agger seems to be one of those defenders who offers plenty of potential without ever quite managing to deliver on the Fantasy front. Despite his ability on the ball and regular goal threat, the big Dane disappoints when it comes to racking up returns but the installation of Brendan Rodgers may just prove the catalyst in a turnaround in fortunes for the former Brondby man next term:

A couple of goals in pre-season last time round suggested Agger was gearing up for a solid campaign under Kenny Dalglish. Priced at 6.0 he was a real differential at the back, due to new signing Jose Enrique’s valuation of 5.0 but, after four back-to-back 90 minute appearances at the start of the season, Agger sustained a rib injury in Gameweek 5 against Spurs and spent the next few weeks on the sidelines.

Returning to the first-team in Gameweek 10, Agger missed just one more league match up till Gameweek 25 but another rib injury – picked up in the Carling Cup Final win over Cardiff – once again curtailed his game time. Dalglish handed Jamie Carragher a chance alongside Martin Skrtel at centre-half in the Dane’s absence but Agger made an immediate impact upon his return by notching back-to-back assists against Villa and Blackburn as his manager eased him back into action from the bench.

A goal against Chelsea in the final home game of the season was Agger’s solitary strike of the entire campaign and, with a trio of assists, nine clean sheets and five bonus points also accrued, he finished on a mere 95 points. A far cry from his best-ever haul of 131 back in 2006-07 and a full 27 points behind Liverpool’s best defensive option, Pepe Reina.

The Prospects

Rodgers’ arrival at Anfield will certainly have Fantasy managers reassessing Liverpool’s backline options after the extraordinary returns of the Swansea defence under the Irishman last season. The Welsh outfit chalked up 14 clean sheets, with their possession-based game proving vital in nullifying the threat of opponents, and if the new boss can quickly implement his style of play, the omens look good.

Liverpool’s disappointing campaign suggests their players’ prices are unlikely to rise across the Fantasy games – a valuation of 6.0 seems on the cards for Agger once again but if he can stay injury-free, the 2012/13 campaign could finally see him flourish. The Dane is the prototype Rodgers defender; comfortable in possession, he’ll be expected to bring the ball out from the back, with Rodgers’ style of play calling for plenty of possession from his centre-halves.

Intriguingly, further analysis of Liverpool’s defensive returns highlights how important Agger is at the back; the Reds recorded nine clean sheets in the 23 league games he managed 60+ minutes in last term, compared to just three clean sheets in the other 15 fixtures – a clear example of his influence.

Looking at opening the fixtures, though, there will be some hesitancy amongst Fantasy managers when considering Liverpool’s assets. Rodgers has been handed a difficult start to his time in charge at Merseyside, with City, Arsenal and United the first three visitors to Anfield next term. Factor in trips to West Brom and Sunderland in the opening five Gameweeks and the majority will be willing to take a step back and watch how matters progress before perhaps taking the plunge around the Gameweek 6 mark, when Liverpool’s schedule undoubtedly takes a turn for the good.

Wouldn't consider Agger as a sleeper, tbh.

Injury prone and always has been,

A great asset to the Liverpool back four though when fit. Skrtel got a lot of the plaudits last year, mainly because he'd been so off form previously, but Agger is more crucial to the team.

Skrtel is a stopper and they are ten a penny. Agger is a decent defender who links up the defence and the midfield nicely which in turn stops too many long balls...centre halves like that aren't ten a penny.

It makes me shudder to think that he was fourth choice behind Skrtel, Carragher and Kyriagos under Hodgson.

If the rumours of a big City bid for Skrtel come true, then they should bit their hands off at anything above £20m. They can buy a like for like replacement for no more than £10m and then use the rest to invest elsewhere.

      Was he really 4th choice?!

Very much agree though, Agger is top notch albeit an injury prone nightmare. Skrtel at £20m would be ridiculous business - I really don't rate him that highly. I thought you'd come in for Caulker but not when 'Arry left.

Skrtel stats as a "stopper" were, to say the least, outstanding. For starters, in terms of percentage headers one, no other centre-back bettered him last season. Agger is strong, but Skrtel will not be an easy man to replace.

      Rooney.

Lots of others I want but I think Rooney is the only must have for me. Think prices are going to be very prohibitive this season so I think a lot of you are going to be disappointed with who you'll be able to afford as opposed to who you are planning on getting.

Adebayor is only good when he wants to be (playing against Team who got rid of him or playing for a new contract)

Has the talent but is nowhere near consistent enough.

I can't see him being sold, considering the investment in him, but a loan move isn't a bad idea, if Rodgers doesn't think he'll fit into the system.

Milan are apparently interested in a loan - he gets playing time abroad and Liverpool can play like Swansealona without him 😉

If he does well in italy he can either be integrated into the first team or sold for a good price

Bit too much competition in the Liverpool central midfield for that to have much bearing in fantasy terms.

Even in a 4-3-3, Lucas is nailed on, Gerrard will play at least every other game, and Adam, Aquilani, Cole, Henderson, Shelvey and Spearing are competing for 1-2 spot.

I reckon Shelvey will go out on loan, hopefully to a PL club and could then represent a bargain, but championship is more likely

Why do so many people think Siggy will be 9m? I know it's being compared to Adam but a big factor in pricing seems to be reputation. Adam was in the spotlight the entire season at Blackpool and finished 2nd top scorer overall. Siggy did brilliantly but it was only half a season and he certainly didn't get the media attention that Adam did.

I understand those factors will result in a hefty increase but, outside of places like this, Siggy doesn't have a big reputation like Adam got while at Blackpool. 8m seems more likely to me.

i am afraid that he dont ,,finissh like adam in livpool''

i'll avoid him in fisrt few weeks for sure

9M for spurs offesive MF player is very realistic as well

Certainly got quite a lot of media attention and a similar move.

Cisse/Jelavic only did it for half a season but I'd expect big price increases there too.

Adam was overpriced - they didn't seem to consider that he wouldn't take penalties and therefore many baps. However, Siggy will play much further forward than Adam ever did. I don't think he will be £9m, but it'll be at least £8m.

I thought FPL were more stats focused in their pricing and reputation focused on players who haven't played in the Prem yet. Siggy's PPG was as good as the expensive midfielders. And he is playing for a top four team.

A goal every 6 games career average, 8 league goals last season, and likely to be a bit cheaper than the full backs IMO.
