Daniel Agger seems to be one of those defenders who offers plenty of potential without ever quite managing to deliver on the Fantasy front. Despite his ability on the ball and regular goal threat, the big Dane disappoints when it comes to racking up returns but the installation of Brendan Rodgers may just prove the catalyst in a turnaround in fortunes for the former Brondby man next term:

A couple of goals in pre-season last time round suggested Agger was gearing up for a solid campaign under Kenny Dalglish. Priced at 6.0 he was a real differential at the back, due to new signing Jose Enrique’s valuation of 5.0 but, after four back-to-back 90 minute appearances at the start of the season, Agger sustained a rib injury in Gameweek 5 against Spurs and spent the next few weeks on the sidelines.

Returning to the first-team in Gameweek 10, Agger missed just one more league match up till Gameweek 25 but another rib injury – picked up in the Carling Cup Final win over Cardiff – once again curtailed his game time. Dalglish handed Jamie Carragher a chance alongside Martin Skrtel at centre-half in the Dane’s absence but Agger made an immediate impact upon his return by notching back-to-back assists against Villa and Blackburn as his manager eased him back into action from the bench.

A goal against Chelsea in the final home game of the season was Agger’s solitary strike of the entire campaign and, with a trio of assists, nine clean sheets and five bonus points also accrued, he finished on a mere 95 points. A far cry from his best-ever haul of 131 back in 2006-07 and a full 27 points behind Liverpool’s best defensive option, Pepe Reina.

The Prospects

Rodgers’ arrival at Anfield will certainly have Fantasy managers reassessing Liverpool’s backline options after the extraordinary returns of the Swansea defence under the Irishman last season. The Welsh outfit chalked up 14 clean sheets, with their possession-based game proving vital in nullifying the threat of opponents, and if the new boss can quickly implement his style of play, the omens look good.

Liverpool’s disappointing campaign suggests their players’ prices are unlikely to rise across the Fantasy games – a valuation of 6.0 seems on the cards for Agger once again but if he can stay injury-free, the 2012/13 campaign could finally see him flourish. The Dane is the prototype Rodgers defender; comfortable in possession, he’ll be expected to bring the ball out from the back, with Rodgers’ style of play calling for plenty of possession from his centre-halves.

Intriguingly, further analysis of Liverpool’s defensive returns highlights how important Agger is at the back; the Reds recorded nine clean sheets in the 23 league games he managed 60+ minutes in last term, compared to just three clean sheets in the other 15 fixtures – a clear example of his influence.

Looking at opening the fixtures, though, there will be some hesitancy amongst Fantasy managers when considering Liverpool’s assets. Rodgers has been handed a difficult start to his time in charge at Merseyside, with City, Arsenal and United the first three visitors to Anfield next term. Factor in trips to West Brom and Sunderland in the opening five Gameweeks and the majority will be willing to take a step back and watch how matters progress before perhaps taking the plunge around the Gameweek 6 mark, when Liverpool’s schedule undoubtedly takes a turn for the good.

Great news to see this lad back in training

Pardew told the Evening Chronicle: 'I'm looking forward to having Steven running around and playing again.
'Having Steven back fit for pre-season is a big boost for us. He did very well last season before his injury.
'He's an important player for us, and we want everyone fit for what's going to be a tough season. He's hoping to have an injury-free season, and hopefully he will.'
Taylor will fight for a place alongside captain Fabricio Coloccini with Mike Williamson, who, barring a couple of difficult games last season, deputised ably in his absence.

Quality player. Bap magnet. Might be undervalued this season as well as he has got goals in his locker, but didn't score any last season!

He would have been in the euro squad for sure if he was fit.

His injury ended his stay from GW1 in my team last season. Hopefully his injury means he dodges the Newcastle inflation and I can put him in my GW1 team again.

If you for an attacking system then you'll need to afford cheepies

I assume he'll play in the same place as he did at Bolton, which was usually just behind the striker, scoring a lot of goals.

Please read my blog guys, here is the latest offering:

    http://fantasyfootballandsaints.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/defenders-analysis-and-potential-prices.html

These articles are intended to give Fantasy Football managers an insight into the FPL potential of Southampton FC players in the upcoming season.

    Defenders

    Danny Butterfield
    Ryan Dickson
    Jose Fonte
    Danny Fox
    Dan Harding
    Jos Hooiveld
    Ben Reeves
    Frazer Richardson
    Danny Seabourne
    Luke Shaw
    Jack Stephens

The Saints managed to rack up a total of 18 clean sheets in last seasons promotion from the Championship. To put this in perspective, promotion rivals Reading and West Ham managed 20 and 17 respectively. Not a lot to choose from between the sides then.

What follows is an analysis of the current squad defenders and the likelihood of them featuring in the team this season and price estimates:

    Jose Fonte

Fonte formed a formidable centre back partnership with Jos Hooiveld last season. Making 42 league appearances, Fonte should be considered a guaranteed starter for the upcoming season. Similar to the playing style of Swansea, the Saints like to work the ball from the back; Fonte in particular is gifted with the ball at his feet and is willing to receive short passes and throw outs from Kelvin Davis in goal. He is willing to use skill to pass players and is a great passer of the ball, often resisting the urge to just lump it to Lambert. Although he only scored once last season he is a threat from set pieces.

    Price Estimate: £4.5

    Jos Hooiveld

Hooiveld makes up the other half of the centre back pairing that took Saints to the Premiership, making 39 appearances. Very much a fan favourite, Jos has been a constant threat from set pieces scoring a highly impressive 7 goals in the league last season. His aerial ability is put to use at both ends of the pitch and he brings a physicality to the Saints defence. He is more likely than Fonte to play longer balls and at times does look slow (although only received 4 yellow cards). It will be interesting to see how he copes with Premier League attacks. Very much one to consider.

    Price Estimate: £5.0

    Danny Fox

Fox made 37 appearances last season (4 of which were as a substitute) filling the left back role in defence. Receiving 5 yellows and 1 red card Fox does have a questionable temperament but 99% of the time he is committed and fearsome in the tackle. He is very physical and able to play the ball to feet in the Saints style of short passing and build up play. Perhaps is most telling contribution last season was his superb delivery from set pieces. Fox amassed a more than impressive 11 assists last season ranking joint 5th in the entire Championship - not bad for a left back. The potential signing (although now uncertain) of Buttner may ensure Fox is not guaranteed to start every game next season.

    Price Estimate: £4.5

    Frazer Richardson

Richardson played only 33 games for the Saints in the league last season (1 as a sub) having had a few spells on the sidelines. At one point in the season Richardson was rivalling Premier League's Silva in the assist tables, eventually ending with 8 assists in the league. Reliable and steady, Richardson owned the right back spot when fit. Whether he has the pace to rise to the challenge of the Premier League however is doubtful.

    Price Estimate: £4.5

    Dan Harding

Unfortunately for Harding who was heavily involved in the Saints rise from League 1 his appearances have been limited this season. Making only 12 appearances, with 8 of them coming from the bench, it is likely that Harding will again be used as a squad player, filling in for injuries and possibly given opportunities in the Cups and when rotation is required. His pace may prove useful in the Premier League.

    Price Estimate: £4.0

    Dan Seabourne

Seabourne made only 4 league appearances last season after suffering a life threatening injury after a night out in Southampton (rumour has it he was flashing the cash...). Although out of hospital and months into his recovery it is unknown as to whether he will feature in any capacity this season. The general consensus is that Saints will purchase a centre back, therefore Seabournes game time may be restricted.

    Price Estimate: £4.0

    Luke Shaw

An attacking fullback and still only 16, Shaw is one to watch. You may have read recent speculation that Chelsea are lining up a £4million bid with Nigel Adkins stating that Saints are not a selling club. It is likely he will be introduced very slowly into the first team fold having only made 1 FA cup appearance last season. Not really a FF option this season.

    Price Estimate: £4.0

    Danny Butterfield

Butterfield made only 9 appearances last season, filling in at right back covering for Frazer Richardson. He featured strongly during the run in but it is likely that he will only appear as cover.

    Price Estimate: £4.0

    Ryan Dickson

Loaned out to Yeovil and Leyton Orient, Dickson is likely to suffer the same this season.

    Price Estimate: £4.0

    Jack Stephens

Versatile defender only 18 years of age but, like Shaw, is unlikely to feature much in the Premier League and will be introduced slowly.

    Price Estimate: £4.0

    Ben Reeves

Another young member of the squad, Reeves made only a handful of sub and loan appearances. Another player for the future and not FPL at present.

    Price Estimate: £4.0

Keep an eye on the transfer market as the fans do expect further investment in the defence which is lacking in pace for the rigours of the Premier League.

Good post. I'll be pissed off if Soton's first XI defenders are 4.5ish though. Promoted sides are usually 4mil, with the odd 4.5 if they've got set pieces in their locker, e.g. Alexander at Burnley. I expect only Harte to be more than £4.0 out of all the promoted defenders tbh.
