Daniel Agger seems to be one of those defenders who offers plenty of potential without ever quite managing to deliver on the Fantasy front. Despite his ability on the ball and regular goal threat, the big Dane disappoints when it comes to racking up returns but the installation of Brendan Rodgers may just prove the catalyst in a turnaround in fortunes for the former Brondby man next term:

A couple of goals in pre-season last time round suggested Agger was gearing up for a solid campaign under Kenny Dalglish. Priced at 6.0 he was a real differential at the back, due to new signing Jose Enrique’s valuation of 5.0 but, after four back-to-back 90 minute appearances at the start of the season, Agger sustained a rib injury in Gameweek 5 against Spurs and spent the next few weeks on the sidelines.

Returning to the first-team in Gameweek 10, Agger missed just one more league match up till Gameweek 25 but another rib injury – picked up in the Carling Cup Final win over Cardiff – once again curtailed his game time. Dalglish handed Jamie Carragher a chance alongside Martin Skrtel at centre-half in the Dane’s absence but Agger made an immediate impact upon his return by notching back-to-back assists against Villa and Blackburn as his manager eased him back into action from the bench.

A goal against Chelsea in the final home game of the season was Agger’s solitary strike of the entire campaign and, with a trio of assists, nine clean sheets and five bonus points also accrued, he finished on a mere 95 points. A far cry from his best-ever haul of 131 back in 2006-07 and a full 27 points behind Liverpool’s best defensive option, Pepe Reina.

The Prospects

Rodgers’ arrival at Anfield will certainly have Fantasy managers reassessing Liverpool’s backline options after the extraordinary returns of the Swansea defence under the Irishman last season. The Welsh outfit chalked up 14 clean sheets, with their possession-based game proving vital in nullifying the threat of opponents, and if the new boss can quickly implement his style of play, the omens look good.

Liverpool’s disappointing campaign suggests their players’ prices are unlikely to rise across the Fantasy games – a valuation of 6.0 seems on the cards for Agger once again but if he can stay injury-free, the 2012/13 campaign could finally see him flourish. The Dane is the prototype Rodgers defender; comfortable in possession, he’ll be expected to bring the ball out from the back, with Rodgers’ style of play calling for plenty of possession from his centre-halves.

Intriguingly, further analysis of Liverpool’s defensive returns highlights how important Agger is at the back; the Reds recorded nine clean sheets in the 23 league games he managed 60+ minutes in last term, compared to just three clean sheets in the other 15 fixtures – a clear example of his influence.

Looking at opening the fixtures, though, there will be some hesitancy amongst Fantasy managers when considering Liverpool’s assets. Rodgers has been handed a difficult start to his time in charge at Merseyside, with City, Arsenal and United the first three visitors to Anfield next term. Factor in trips to West Brom and Sunderland in the opening five Gameweeks and the majority will be willing to take a step back and watch how matters progress before perhaps taking the plunge around the Gameweek 6 mark, when Liverpool’s schedule undoubtedly takes a turn for the good.

How are FPL usually when it comes to players new to the PL's prices?
I remember VDV was cheap, Sigurdsson too, Jelavic, Cisse.
Mata was reasonably priced and as was Aguero for his returns.

I'm sure it's the same every season but it does seem like everyone I want will be at least £1.5m more than they were.

But then, I only got BAE because he was the cheapest entry into a blossoming spurs defence. I had no idea I would want him. So I guess we're just waiting to see who blossoms unexpectedly this season.

Darren Bent? Beware that every goal conceded loses a point, still sure you want Rangel and Fabs?

I'm considering the golden trio of Arteta, Song, Wilshere. Arsenals beautiful passing game with a touch of possession gaining tackles is set perfectly.

Could work well, I doubt most will do it or recommend it, but as with all plans some work when least expect them to. Given that many people will end up wildcarding early anyway why not plan it.

Was initially thinking 3x Chel and 1x Rea.. but if they can fluke a clean sheet at home vs stoke, or get goals in either fixture, assuming they don't concede lots/ loads of cards, could work out quite well... cheap too so free up money elsewhere (and can have junk subs).

Guess chelsea/ reading players may lose some value after the initial game week but hopefully nothing too significant.

If i were to do it, when would i use my wildcard? Wednesday evening or? would i still get points from week 2?

Well done to King Nemanja on the 3 team rotation spreadsheet. Great work.
So, I assume this means cheap rotating GKs, 2 x expensive DEFs plus plaing one out of 3 (hopefully) cheapies..am I right?
If so, is this a new concept/ strategy.? I always like to go with 1 x expensive (eg Kompany last year) plus 4 cheap and use the extra 1.5m in Mid or attack.
Must say, it is tempting to have Kompany AND Vidic for GW1

I think being simple is the main strength of FPL and I would not like the recovered balls rule. Another reason for that is that I think it's a rule that is a bit random and just makes players score more evenly for no good reason.

'ITK' sources reporting that Moutinho, Lloris, Ade in, Modric out, VdV staying is likely. Obviously take this with a heavy dash of salt but if true how would you see Spurs lining up?

    Lloris
    BAE Vert Kaboul Walker
    Sandro/Parker
    Moutinho VdV/Sigurdsson
    Bale Ade Lennon

My guess. Would make sense I suppose, we are all criticised 'Arry for failing to rotate and Sigurdsson is still young enough that he can cope with not playing every game.

You could be right, but I don't think Sigurdsson would have gone there under those terms given his options. Young or not.

No, was my original thought. Why I still kind of think VdV will leave despite being on the posters for the new kit.

I guess you could play Sigurdsson wide right, or even VdV as a false 9 (eugh, I don't like it).

would love to see moutinho coming in, as well as Sandro playing more. Whether VDV stays or goes is key though as he and Siggy are so similar and you can only accomodate one of them. Has AVB always stuck with a 4-3-3 wherever he's been?

Whether Sigurdsson is really worth having is probably dependent on VDV leaving.

He'd share set pieces with Bale probably should both Modric+VDV go but perhaps take the lions share of free kicks, but VDV hogs the lot and would probably continue to do so if he stays. Not really sure how they would both be accommodated in one team
