QPR open their pre-season schedule with a 5-0 thrashing of a local XI in Asia, with Djibril Cisse the main protagonist. Man City scrape a goalless draw in Germany and have yet to find the net over their first couple of matches, while West Ham’s less than impressive form continues, as the Hammers slip to defeat at Oxford United:

Sabah Select XI 0 QPR 5
Mark Hughes’ side began their pre-season tour of Asia in emphatic style yesterday afternoon. The QPR boss handed three of his summer signings their debut, with Ji-Sung Park, Andrew Johnson and Fabio all featuring in the 5-0 win. The London outfit fielded a different XI in each half and went in 1-0 ahead at the break, thanks to a Bobby Zamora goal, though Johnson was highly praised in the match reports for an industrious performance up front alongside his former Fulham team mate. The second half saw QPR run rampant, with Fabio – 4.5 in FPL and 4.3 in the Sky Sports game – offering plenty threat from the right-back area throughout and resultantly picking up an assist towards the end. Hughes will be more than happy to see his frontmen all in strong form; Jay Bothroyd and Heidar Helguson both found the net, though Djibril Cisse was the stand-out performer. The Frenchman produced two goals and an assist, in a continuation of the form that brought six goals in seven starts in the second half of last season; at 6.5 in FPL and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game respectively, he could well be one to watch as a mid-price option next term.

QPR (first half): Murphy, Harriman, Ferdinand, Hill, Ehmer, Wright-Phillips, Diakite, Park, Doughty, Zamora, Johnson.

QPR (second half): Cerny, Fabio, Onuoha, Connolly, Traore, Mackie, Taarabt, Ephraim, Bothroyd, Cisse, Helguson.

Dynamo Dresden 0 Man City 0
Two games down and the champions have yet to score in pre-season following a goalless draw in Germany yesterday evening. Despite missing their Euro 2012 contingent, City still fielded a strong team, with Argentine duo Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez named up front in a 4-4-2. The latter looked the livelier of the two and came close to making the difference a couple of times, while Aguero – in his first appearance of the summer – made way at the break. Roberto Mancini made several changes as the match progressed but City, despite the promptings of Yaya Toure, were simply unable to produce the breakthrough and had to settle for a drab stalemate in the end. According to the City website, Mancini fielded all fit and available senior players for the match – Edin Dzeko, Adam Johnson and Nigel De Jong all sat in the stands, suggesting the trio were carrying knocks. Vincent Kompany also limped off with what appeared to be a hamstring issue, though bearing in mind the City site failed to mention it, the problem is likely to be minimal.

City Starting XI: Pantilimon (Johansen 74mins), Zabaleta (Elabdellaoui 74), Kolo Toure (Boyata 86), Savic (Mancini 86), Kompany (Rekik 68) Biton (Evans 86), Yaya Toure (Razak 70), Lopes (Weiss 62), Kolarov (Helan 74), Tevez (Scapuzzi 74) and Aguero (Jelavic 46, Bunn 86)

Oxford United 1 West Ham 0
Sam Allardyce fielded a strong team for last night’s trip to Oxford but watched on as his side spurned several opportunities in the 1-0 defeat. The likes of Mark Noble, Kevin Nolan and Ravel Morrison started in midfield, while Carlton Cole and Ricardo Vaz Te led the line in a 4-4-2 for the visitors. The Hammers ensured Morrison saw plenty of the ball and the former United man sparkled without producing any end product, while Vaz Te was the most culpable and missed plenty of chances to find the net. Allardyce watched his side go behind on 38 minutes and, after making a couple of substitutions at half-time, then proceeded to hand many of his Development Squad youngsters a run out just after the hour mark but the alterations failed to make any difference. The Hammers are being pencilled in for investment by Fantasy managers due to their strong opening schedule but their form so far has been anything but impressive; they have now tasted victory in just one of their four friendlies thus far.

West Ham Starting XI: Henderson, Demel (Nasha 61), Spence, Reid (Wearen 61), McCartney (Taylor 46), Noble (Moncur 61), Nolan (Ruddock 61), O’Neil (Porritt 61), Morrison (Turgott 61), Cole (Maynard 46), Vaz Te (Hall 61)

It's probably 4 into 3 positions (with Dzeko warming the bench)
The 4 being Tevez, Aguero, Nasri (Aguero and Tevez can play his position) and of course Balotelli.

27 million perhaps, may be less due to injuries etc, but over a season...

        Each player should get about 150 points, so X 4 = 600.

Their Strikers, mids are more expensive...

      YES!!

      Most definately.

      I have said this already.

I am always reluctant to have a player that has just joined a new club.

      Firstly, he may not start.

Secondly, just cause he did well for his last club, does not mean he will do just as good at his new club.

I will wait & see with him.

Guys which 3 team rotation for cheap defenders is most tickling your fancy? Currently I'm looking at

    Fulham/ Sunderland/ Wigan (Hughes 4.5/ Cuellar 4.5/ Figueroa 4.5)

According to a video posted on the official website of the Fenway Sports Group, who are the owners of Liverpool, by the New England Sports Network (NESN), the Premier League club will complete the signing of Fulham attacker Clint Dempsey by the end of the week.

Yeah tis risky, but GKs so seldom get injured/rotated, and Utd are a good enough team to play their players every week regardless of fixtures. Just feel it's wasting 0.5m getting a GK that I'll never play. With DDG as the cheapest Utd defender nailed on (though Rafa may may RB his own), the days of having cheap, rotating Gks are over for me.

I like going for the big front three personally, can easily be altered after a couple of weeks esp with the Torres blank.

The 4.0 keeper is potentially an issue...with the strength of your main 3 defenders you could even get Fonte over Harte and then get a 4.5 keeper.

Good example of what you can do with the price structure this year. Love the defence, but in terms of transfers you might be in something of a straight jacket with so many sub 7mil mids and the big three up front?

Yeah that is the problem. Im definitely keeping Rooney and Aguero, Torres is the guy I'm not sure about and he's only really there due to a very kind couple of fixtures GW1. I can see there'll be tears there tbh.

As i say, I'll be downgrading Torres after GW1 in all likelihood, so can re-distribute funds from then

Looking at Swansea's signing of Miguel Pérez Cuesta, aka Michu (see http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/swansea-bid-accepted-for-michu-goalscoring-1145705) ...replacing Sigs in their AM slot and 15 goals in La Liga last season. Looks interesting...

What you think his price will be, £5.5m?

A few potential bargains that I haven't seen mentioned much:
    Marin (CHE) 7.0
    Gardner (SUN) 5.0
    Ba (NEW) 7.5
    Cahill (EVE) 6.5
    Larsson (SUN) 6.5
    Bendtner (SUN) 6.5
    Downing (LIV) 6.5

The top three really jump out at me as outstanding value.

      Don't think Marin will start
      Bendy is back atArsenal
      Downing is Downing

Not sure on Gardner's chances of playing but he could be very good. Totally forgot about Demba as well, so much depends on how they line up but he still has pens in his arsenal at the very least.

I don't know about Ba really. I struggle to see how he'll get goals at the rate that the other strikers in his price bracket will if he keeps being pushed out to the left hand side of the front 3. His goals dried up last season due to that.

Gardner could be very good indeed though.

Marin will probably start due to others at Olympics but i don't think he'll be a regular with the competition for places they have and imminent arrival of Oscar.

I think Cahill is past it as a fantasy prospect, i think he's lost his spark, he's seemingly forgotten how to score. Wouldn't be surprised if he was sold or just sat on the bench for alot of the season.

Larsson could be great value, as a cheaper option to Sess and he may even nab penalties.

I don't think Bendtners at Sunderland anymore.

      Downing. Hmmm

Marin probably won't start most of the games (replacement for Kalou/Malouda?)
Sunderland haven't signed Bendtner permanently have they?
Ba could be on his way and could play out left again.
Cahill could be an interesting one but Everton early season form and a lack of goals last year.

Larsson will pick up points regularly, Gardner unlikely to always start.

      And Downing...

Anybody got any thoughts on a defence strategy as to which will be best over season and best value (playing 3-4-3)

    2 big hitters (6.5 each) and 3 cheap (5.5 each) on rotation = 29.5

    or

    3 (6.5 each) big hitters and 2 (4.5) fillers that never play = 28.5

Are there any alternative tactics or alterations to the above to consider?

if you're gonna have players never play you might as well go for 4.0s

5.5 is not cheap for a defender anyway, still too expensive to rotate IMO

Also rotation last season proved to be a bit of a myth.

I'd say get 2 you can play without fear every week and then three at 5.0 and below, there's definite value there with the likes of Hangeland, S. Taylor etc...

I think there's a huge amount of value in big defenders this year; Cole, Lescott and Verthongan are all 6.5 with is very good. Your 3 rotating cheapies should cost about 4.5 each, which puts it in at 26.5, but I'm tempted to go with the 3 big boys this year.

Don't like Clichy, potential rotation like last year. Pay extra for Kompany or Lescott.
