Brett Holman arrived at Aston Villa this summer on a Bosman deal from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, having signed a pre-contract to join the midlands outfit back in March during the reign of Alex McLeish. The 28-year-old midfielder was the first of three new faces to boost Paul Lambert’s squad, with Karim El Ahmadi and Matthew Lowton also added to the ranks in recent weeks:

Holman’s attacking threat is likely to add plenty menace to a side that struggled for goals last season under the defensive-minded McLeish and, while there are fears he may not feature in Lambert’s plans, the former Norwich boss has been quick to assure the Australian he will get a fair crack of the whip following the previous manager’s dismissal:

“If there is one lad who has probably got a bit of trepidation, then it would be Brett because it wasn’t me who brought him to the club. But I have spoken to him to reassure him and he will get a right fair chance. He did well at Alkmaar so I don’t have any worries about him on that score. As long as he works hard and tries to be successful, then he will be the same as everybody. He will get a chance.”

The Statistics

Holman’s career in his native country kicked off in the youth set-up at Northern Spirit before he was snapped up as a 17-year-old by Parramatta Power in the 2001-02 campaign. He managed five goals and a couple of assists in 13 first-team appearances before sealing a move to Feyenoord in 2002 but failed to feature for the Dutch giants – the following four seasons saw Holman farmed out on loan to SBV Excelsior where, over the course of 134 league appearances, he returned 39 goals and 23 assists.

The Australian’s impressive attacking displays saw him move to another Dutch club, NEC Nijmegen, where he produced 13 goals and six assists over 59 games before Louis Van Gaal signed him for AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2008. Holman lasted four seasons at the club and also worked under Dick Advocaat, making a total of 96 league appearance and returning 15 goals and 20 assists. Last term was by far his most successful from an attacking perspective, with five goals and 11 assists earning him two prestigious accolades in his native country – Holman was voted Player of the Year by the Professional Footballers Australia and Football Media Association’s International Player of the Year.

The Prospects

The new manager’s propensity for attacking football should certainly boost Villa’s prospects going forward next season. Last term saw the midlands outfit register a mere 37 goals, the second lowest total in the Premier League and considerably less than Lambert’s Norwich; the Canaries netted 52 goals, a tally only beaten by the top six.

Certainly, Holman got off to the perfect start last weekend at Burton Albion. On as a second half sub, he grabbed the decider in a 2-1 victory to ensure Lambert kicked off his tenure as Villa boss with a win. Holman also started and completed an hour of last night’s 1-0 win over Philadelphia Union.

The Australian is able to play on either flank as well as a second striker and his adaptability could prove vital when assessing his potential game time for the season ahead. With Charles N’Zogbia likely to pick up the most investment from the Villa midfield as a result of renewed expectations, Holman should fly under the radar, though question marks hang over his ability to make an instant impact in his new surroundings.

From a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) perspective, N’Zogbia’s 6.5 valuation could well be a significant factor in how we assess Holman. The former Wigan man started last term at 7.5 and, while he failed to fire under McLeish, his proven returns at his previous club are likely to bring investment his way. At 6.0, Holman is just a tad cheaper, though his acquisition represents more of a gamble, given he’s a newcomer to the league. Intriguingly, the Sky Sports game have handed both an identical value of 5.7 in the mid-price bracket.

Looking at the fixture list, the midlanders have been afforded the perfect opportunity to banish the memory of last season from the off. Home clashes against Everton, Swansea and West Brom in the first six Gameweeks look prosperous and with trips to promoted pair West Ham and Southampton, Lambert’s side may well be quick out the blocks. If Holman can nail down a regular role, the Australian may very well be one to watch.

    My defence:
    Ivan Cole Hangeland Cuellar Mccartney

Thoughts on bringing STaylor in for Hangeland? Long term rotates better with Cuellar and may keep a surprise cleanie in the first 2. Cant shake the feeling Hangeland will score at least once in the first few weeks tho and has great fixtures for a while bar week 2 and 6

Who are your keepers? I think Hangeland is still a better option so stick with him, S.Taylor could have injury problems ahead anyway.

Doubling up on Chelsea defenders for whole season or just DGW?

    My rough plan for FPL.....

    1. Don't go near Stoke or Sunderland goalies.
    2. Have one City defender at all times.
    3. No more than 2 defenders £6m or over.
    4. Avoid Everton and Wigan players until the second half of the season.
    5. Two middle range defenders until cheap alternatives are known.
    6. One bench warmer bargain basement defender.
    7. Avoid rotation managers like Lambert.
    8. Try resist City forwards apart from Aguero.
    9. Buy from predictable managers like O'Neill.
    10. Avoid defenders relying on Jaaskelainen between the sticks.
    11. Avoid bandwagons that only seem to take on a life of their own on FFS.
    12. Don't ever buy Defoe, Gibbs, Kolarov, Ireland, Hibbert or Bendtner no matter how logical it seems at the time.
    13. The second Bale shows signs of form, buy him even if it means sacrificing a Silva or Nani.
    14. Don't buy Ashley Young.
    15. Stick to players that you can better predict when their point hauls will come such as Sunderland, Fulham and Swansea DFs, Dempsey, Bent or Aguero while playing at home while on the flip side avoiding unpredictable WBA & Wigan players, Everton attackers
    16. Ignore news around here of some non entity ripping it up in pre-season ala Boselli.
    17. Keep the wildcard until after January.
    18. No more than 5 point hits all season.
    19. Never captain a defender.
    20. Stop spending so much time reading this site and compiling silly lists.

Some great advise there Scratch, I'll take some on board.

But number 1, is that because your worried about rotation? I would agree there may be rotation with Stoker keepers but has Mingolet not got his place fairly secured?

When i first saw him he was a left back but i know what you mean, tough to imagine him keeping to his defensive responsibilities!

And i also liked him, that what was so infuriating when he was suddenly not in the matchday squad. Moyes is such a cagey fecker as well. I'm sure i kept him last season for about 4GW's hoping he'd return from injury and he didn't

The guy has never played a Prem game in his life vs one of the greats. Certainly is a no brainer.

Of course if Lampard is playing deep i'll have to reconsider but he'll still be on pens regardless. And Hazard 'in the hole'? Really? I thought he'd be on the left or right of Torres with Mata on the other side.

Cheers guys. I was also thinking Hazard will play wide. Lamps is battle tested and all over pens whereas Hazard although looks very promising has yet to play a prem game and provide evidence of worth (although it is unlikely that he will flop). All depends on how they line up, if lamps is deep/forward, Hazard wide/in the hole or whatever. Community shield line ups will help determine this.

      Thanks all. Sound advice.

Right, I'm pretty happy with this..Ignore the fact there's no Chelsea players in there..will be bringing Nando and Terry in for GW1. Any advice on my 3 cheap defenders? Want to keep it NOR/WHM/REA.

    ..........Krul..........Mingnolet..........
    Vidic.....Clichy.....Tompkins.....Tierney....Pearce
    Valencia....Yaya....Cabaye....Larsson....Noble....Britton
    Rooney......Pog.......Aguero

The team rotates perfectly..Just not sure on Britton or Pearce. Any advice?

    As I'm not convinced by the Pog;

    A) Begovic, Maloney, Pog

    B) 4.0 keeper, Guthrie, Graham

Graham has much better fixtures. But is it worth the compromise elsewhere?

(Other keeper is DDG, obviously. And Guthrie would also be bench fodder.)

I doubt it, he'll have had a week in between the final and the first game, and he's a keeper so doesn't need as much rest

Going for a risky expensive defence,

    De Gea
    Ivanovic, Vermaelen, Lescott, Fabio
    Kagawa Traabt Hazard
    Torres (c) Podolski Cisse

Subs: (ruddy) (fonte) (Brittton, Al Ahmadi)

    Thoughts would be appreciated

I may have second thoughts on defence

Newcastle have 3 out of 5 difficult games at the start, I don't the P.Cisse is worth it.

I don't fancy Podolski straight away either, or Vermaelen with Arsenals first few fixtures.

I also don't really like Fabio or Al Ahmadi, but I guess they're just cheapies.

I would wait and see how Kagawa gets on before owning him.

Personally, I'm planning on starting with Rooney + Aguero + D.Cisse up front.

I was thinking of downgrading vermaeln for a cheaper defender from arsenal maybe jenkinson or koscielny. I do think the verm will score a few.

I think I will take out p.cisse as it is ramadan and he may be fasting (which also goes for other notable muslim players like ba, yaya, ben arfa, taarabt, ect) , as well as the hard games.

I think I will keep torres, im not going for both rooney and aguero need to choose one.

aguero for cisse, and change vermaelen

If you have Pog just for the DGW, make sure you have the money to upgrade him after, there's no one else at 5.0 I don't think.

If you can afford D.Cisse, I'd get him.

    C) A different 4.5mid of your choice + Sessegnon - leaving me with no Swansea except Williams.
