Brett Holman arrived at Aston Villa this summer on a Bosman deal from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, having signed a pre-contract to join the midlands outfit back in March during the reign of Alex McLeish. The 28-year-old midfielder was the first of three new faces to boost Paul Lambert’s squad, with Karim El Ahmadi and Matthew Lowton also added to the ranks in recent weeks:

Holman’s attacking threat is likely to add plenty menace to a side that struggled for goals last season under the defensive-minded McLeish and, while there are fears he may not feature in Lambert’s plans, the former Norwich boss has been quick to assure the Australian he will get a fair crack of the whip following the previous manager’s dismissal:

“If there is one lad who has probably got a bit of trepidation, then it would be Brett because it wasn’t me who brought him to the club. But I have spoken to him to reassure him and he will get a right fair chance. He did well at Alkmaar so I don’t have any worries about him on that score. As long as he works hard and tries to be successful, then he will be the same as everybody. He will get a chance.”

The Statistics

Holman’s career in his native country kicked off in the youth set-up at Northern Spirit before he was snapped up as a 17-year-old by Parramatta Power in the 2001-02 campaign. He managed five goals and a couple of assists in 13 first-team appearances before sealing a move to Feyenoord in 2002 but failed to feature for the Dutch giants – the following four seasons saw Holman farmed out on loan to SBV Excelsior where, over the course of 134 league appearances, he returned 39 goals and 23 assists.

The Australian’s impressive attacking displays saw him move to another Dutch club, NEC Nijmegen, where he produced 13 goals and six assists over 59 games before Louis Van Gaal signed him for AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2008. Holman lasted four seasons at the club and also worked under Dick Advocaat, making a total of 96 league appearance and returning 15 goals and 20 assists. Last term was by far his most successful from an attacking perspective, with five goals and 11 assists earning him two prestigious accolades in his native country – Holman was voted Player of the Year by the Professional Footballers Australia and Football Media Association’s International Player of the Year.

The Prospects

The new manager’s propensity for attacking football should certainly boost Villa’s prospects going forward next season. Last term saw the midlands outfit register a mere 37 goals, the second lowest total in the Premier League and considerably less than Lambert’s Norwich; the Canaries netted 52 goals, a tally only beaten by the top six.

Certainly, Holman got off to the perfect start last weekend at Burton Albion. On as a second half sub, he grabbed the decider in a 2-1 victory to ensure Lambert kicked off his tenure as Villa boss with a win. Holman also started and completed an hour of last night’s 1-0 win over Philadelphia Union.

The Australian is able to play on either flank as well as a second striker and his adaptability could prove vital when assessing his potential game time for the season ahead. With Charles N’Zogbia likely to pick up the most investment from the Villa midfield as a result of renewed expectations, Holman should fly under the radar, though question marks hang over his ability to make an instant impact in his new surroundings.

From a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) perspective, N’Zogbia’s 6.5 valuation could well be a significant factor in how we assess Holman. The former Wigan man started last term at 7.5 and, while he failed to fire under McLeish, his proven returns at his previous club are likely to bring investment his way. At 6.0, Holman is just a tad cheaper, though his acquisition represents more of a gamble, given he’s a newcomer to the league. Intriguingly, the Sky Sports game have handed both an identical value of 5.7 in the mid-price bracket.

Looking at the fixture list, the midlanders have been afforded the perfect opportunity to banish the memory of last season from the off. Home clashes against Everton, Swansea and West Brom in the first six Gameweeks look prosperous and with trips to promoted pair West Ham and Southampton, Lambert’s side may well be quick out the blocks. If Holman can nail down a regular role, the Australian may very well be one to watch.

Ahoy mateys. I haven't seen many RMT's with Newcastle or Swansea defenders. How do people rate them this season? I currently have Coloccini in my lineup, but may switch him to S Taylor... then may scrap that idea for Rangel. Finally, I'll probably wildcard in Week 2. Anyone care to respond with their ideas?

For Newcastle I suppose the immediate issue is fixtures, they aren't so great. With Swansea I think there's a concern about how they'll perform under Laudrup, whether they can maintain that solidity at home. Swansea have a good run right through into October so there'll be plenty of time to wait and see and hop on - it's not like all of their starting defenders are going to leap up into a more expensive bracket over a few GWs.

Perhaps the most important factor though is price, last season a NEW or SWA defender would cost you 2.5 less than a MUN or MCI defender, this year it's 1.0 less, so that's understandably giving people pause.

Think I might go with Santon, home to Spurs first is a bit tricky, away to Chelsea I'll bench, but after that it's reasonable fixture wise.

They have moved into the mid priced range. This means that they absolutely must return the same output in clean sheets as last year for the price now paid: there no more cheap options. However for Newcastle they have Europe and Swansea a new manager, factors which may disrupt this potential.

I’d rather ‘wait and see’ for both

Yeah I'll have Hazard and possibly Torres.

I expect them to at least keep 1 clean sheet, and there's always the possibilty of an assist. So even if someone like Torres gets a couple of goals, Cashley shouldn't be too far behind.

A Chelsea defender would be a good captain choice for GW1, possible over Torres, but with City at home to Southampton, Aguero also looks very tempting.

I guess we'll have to wait until we've seen more pre-season and if either team sign players.

I was going with Hazard, still a risk though. Cashley might well be a safer bet but likely only to get 12 points max (24 as captain) from both games. The strikeforce have more potential for big numbers but also less certainty - it's a case of slow n' steady or gamble big from the off.

Kagawa seems to be tipped for the 'in the hole' role behind Rooney up front for Utd this season - I'm tempted by him, but not if he's going to be subject to mass rotation. With the like of Nani, Young, Welbeck, Hernandez around, surely Kagawa is by no means a guaranteed starter?

I'm on this lot right now, but thinking it may be safer to switch Kagawa to Dempsey, and downgrade either Friedel or one of the cheaper mids to fund it. Worth doing?

        Friedel, Federici
        Lescott, Ivanovic, Jenkinson, Fonte, Demel
        Lampard, Kagawa, Taraabt, Noble, Dyer
        Tevez, Aguero, Torres

        Plan then being:
        GW2: Torres -> Ade
        GW3: Lamps -> Bale

That could work, agree on the GW2/3 transfers.

There are a ton of value midfielders this year though, I'd be tempted to downgrade Kagawa and beef up the defence a bit. Hazard and Bale are the only expensive mids I'm confident in at the moment.

I remember at the start of last season there was a lot of discussion about Nani vs Young. Most people had Nani, then Young did well and loads switched, just for Young to got quiet.

I'm staying clear this year. It's easier just to wait a few weeks and see rather than risking getting the wrong one and losing out on value/points

That's my main worry with him: if I start with him, and I plan to, I'm not likely to be able to shift him without a hit until perhaps GW4 and that could be quite a steep loss by that point. At present I've still got him in though - looked at the other way a goal or two would make a tidy profit.

It's absolutely rubbish. It basically just links to the FPL homepage and lists your starting 11, C, VC, and bench.

What have they actually changed this year apart from the colour of the red/yellow/orange flags for doubtful players?

Don't think there are as many options in MF/attack but a lot will depend on transfers in the next month. Adebayor, Modric, Dempsey, Pienaar, Carroll, Tevez, Dzeko, and Tevez could all make moves that would affect their value - in one or another.

Yeah this worries me as well. The No Arsenal cover that is. Fact is, aside from RVP there is no real stand out FPL performer... If Walcott leaves, Gervinhos worth a look. If RVP leaves, Girouds worth a look.

      Not a Reading fan but...

      1) Was Harte last season, right? With Shorey moving to Reading I guess that would mean someone else will have to take them if/when he's not on the pitch. Le Fondre took a penalty the other day in a friendly even though Harte was on the pitch. I wouldn't read too much into that though, it's early days yet!

    May I present to you....

    Federici ( Begovic )

    Ivanovic - Lescott - Jenkinson ( Fabio, Fox )

    Bale - SIlva - Sinclair - Noble ( Maloney )

    Rooney - Torres - Petric

What we think? I know Petric is a punt but I liek the look of Fulhams fixtures and he's a good experienced player. Think he'll do well.

    Sinclair + Graham = overkill?

Problem is, for the same money you can get Cole / Ivanovic with goal threat.

I'm on Friedel at the moment, who rotates nicely with Federici and gives me a cheap way into Spurs defence for GW 2 and 3.
