QPR keep up their winning ways with a narrow 2-1 triumph in the final game of their pre-season tour of Asia. Bobby Zamora is amongst the goals once again for Mark Hughes’ outfit, with Samba Diakite, Adel Taarabt and Fabio (playing as a right winger) the main protagonists. Tim Cahill looks to be on his way out of Everton after the Toffees accept a bid from New York Red Bulls, while Sir Alex Ferguson reveals Nemanja Vidic and Jonny Evans may not be ready in time for the new season as United’s central defensive crisis deepens:

Persebaya 1 QPR 2
Mark Hughes’s side finished their Asia tour with a 100% record after their third successive win yesterday. After back-to-back 5-0 victories in their previous two games, QPR didn’t get things their own way, though, and conceded their first goal of pre-season on 17 minutes – Rob Green failed to gather a long ball into the box, allowing home forward Soler the chance to slot home from close-range. Samba Diakite, in particular, was lauded by the QPR website for a superb showing in central midfield but it was on-loan Fabio who again played his part offensively. Playing on the right of midfield for Hughes’ side, the Brazilian was hauled down in the box on 26 minutes, with Adel Taarabt slotting home the resultant spot-kick. Fabio – at 4.5 in FPL and 4.3 in the Sky Sports game – already looks set for plenty investment but the added possibility of game time in midfield will really catch the attention of Fantasy managers.

In a game played under sweltering conditions, the pace began to slow as the match progressed but Taarabt maintained his strong recent form and continued to provide plenty menace going forward. It was no surprise when the Moroccan and Fabio were involved in the visitors’ winner; their combination eventually played in Jamie Mackie on the right, with the sub teeing up Bobby Zamora to slot home. The former Fulham man has now notched in all three of his side’s games so far and, priced at 6.5 in FPL and 8.2 in the Sky Sports game, may be one to watch going into the new season.

QPR Starting XI: Green (Cerny 45), Onuoha, Ferdinand (Doughty 45), Connolly, Hill (Ehmer), Fabio (Harriman), Taarabt, Diakite (Park), Traore (Wright-Phillips), Zamora (Ephraim), Helguson (Mackie 45).

In Other News…
Tim Cahill may well have played his last game for Everton after the club confirmed they have accepted a bid of £1m from New York Red Bulls for the Australian’s services. Cahill – who is due to serve a three-match suspension at the start of the season after his dismissal in the Toffees’ final league match of 2011/12 – was a huge disappointment last time round, notching just twice in 35 appearances, and his likely departure now increases the chances of other candidates in David Moyes’ first XI.

With the Everton boss favouring a 4-5-1, a role in “the hole” is up for grabs now – Marouane Fellaini, Leon Osman and Steven Naismith seem the most obvious options; the Belgian impressed there towards the end of the previous campaign, notably in the 4-4 draw against United, but Naismith’s partnership with Nikica Jelavic at Glasgow Rangers may work in his favour. Certainly, Fellaini and Osman hold the most appeal from an Fantasy perspective, mainly as Naismith is classified as a forward in both FPL and the Sky Sports game. All three come in at 6.5 in FPL, though Fellaini is definitely the most intriguing in the Sky game; at 6.1, he is far cheaper than Osman (7.5), with Naismith setting you back 6.7. The move perhaps edges Steven Pienaar towards a Toffees return. With Cahill’s exit helping Moyes balance the books, the South African could be poised to make his way back to Goodison from Spurs – averaging over 5 ppg during his loan spell last term, Pienaar was outstanding value for money and, coming in at 6.5 in FPL this time round, is surely set to pick up plenty investment if he seals his move back to Merseyside.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s central defensive worries show no sign of abating, with the news that United skipper Nemanja Vidic may not be fit in time for the new season. The Serb missed the vast majority of the previous campaign and was expected to be ready for the opener at Everton on Monday August 20 but the Old Trafford boss admitted there are question marks hanging over both Vidic and Jonny Evans, going on to tell a press conference in Shanghai:

It’s not 100 per cent that Jonny Evans and Vida will start the season. Jonny will start running today. Vida and Phil Jones started full training today, which is very positive. If I can keep Rio fit, then Vidic and Jones should give us ample cover.

With Chris Smalling ruled out for 10 weeks due to a metatarsal injury and Evans still recovering from an ankle injury, Scott Wootton has partnered Rio Ferdinand at centre-half in the club’s two pre-season matches thus far. Jones has now returned to training after time off due to Euro 2012 duties, however, and could now come into contention in our Fantasy thinking if Vidic and Evans fail to recover in time; both Jones and Ferdinand are priced at 6.0 in FPL and come in at 7.0 and 6.8 respectively in the Sky Sports game.

      We dont need Lucas.

Carrick. Scholes. Kagawa. Cleverley. Anderson. Valencia. Young. Nani. Giggs. (Jones) (Fletcher)

We've got a solid midfield, a few players dipping in form the last season, but its a new season all over again. Stop bitching. SAF knows what he's doing.

Would certainly not view that as a solid midfield, in terms of a club of the stature of utd. Scholes brought out of retirement to sort out last seasons problems, Giggs another year older, Nani's over shadowed by a RB Valencia, Kagawa unproven, Rooney your lead striker forced to play midfield, as with Jones, because those present to do the job are not good enough.

Ming and Schwarzer roate nicely in terms of opponents pretty much all the way through the season if you have a spare £0.5m.

Not found a £4.5m keeper that rotates as well with either of them as they do with each other.

I read a Modric interview about 3 months ago. He said a move was possible, but that he would never try and force a move by doing a Tevez, he's not that kind of guy. He said he was disappointed originally not to have got a move last summer, but that once that became clear, he gave his all in every training session and match.

Madrid have put him up to this, there's no doubt.

Gunter will be nailed on at RB I think. Cost 2.5mil and apparently the RB Cummings was a weak link in the team people have said. In regards to the CB's I think its Mariappa and Gorkss fighting for one spot as Pearce is supposedly nailed. Guess this situation is a wait and see but I personally think itll be Mariappa after they paid 2.5-3mil for him. I dont personally think a team like Reading newly promoted is spending on players that are gona be subs to strengthen the squad, they will buy players to start in the XI.

Gunter most nailed on out of those as Cummings was pretty rubbish last season.

Impossible to guarantee who will start out of Gorkss and Mariappa at the moment. Reading have paid 2.5-3 mil on Mariappa, a fee high for them in general let alone for somebody to sit on the bench, but Gorkss barely put a foot wrong last season so may start the first few GWs with Pearce..

Barnett is a shocking suggestion, he hardly played for us last season, was completely frozen out by Lambert and I honestly can't see him ever being more than a bench player for us now.

Tierney is the most nailed on in the back line, followed by Ryan Bennett and R.Martin (could be at RB or CB though), the remaining spot is up for grabs but likely to be either Whittaker or Ayala.

Tierney would be the only player I'd consider from our back line though, and if the friendly against Hertha was anything to go by (based on the highlights), our defence is as rocky as ever and will take some time to resolve...

Sad to see Cahill depart. Brilliant player on his day and when not plagued by injury, and more often than not the potential for explosive Fantasy returns, or the source of a leftfield punt to make up points.

After much consternation, I think I've swayed myself away from 3 of the "standard" picks on here for the following reasons:

Frederici - If Reading are goal sieves, then you'll never play him past week 1, so you have to waste a transfer on another 4.5 GK (which stings only slightly less than downgrading an outfield player at the same time to get a better GK).

Pog - If he doesn't perform, you'll have a hard time finding a replacement; if he does perform, transferring him in seems much easier (and even if he goes up .5 - 1 if he's hitting, he's still a good value)

(and for both of these, I think the underlying thing is if you're going to carry dead weight, shouldn't your dead weight be 4.0?)

Torres - If half of the Torres ownership is shipping him out for Rooney in GW2 (which you see so frequently in posts it looks like an email signature), then that 2 mil difference will balloon. So either you have to make your Torres>Rooney trade immediately (I was burned by early trades several times last year) or lose/make up for that value loss.

Anyway, I'm sure I'm just overthinking.

(with 2.0 in the bank to do Torres to Rooney)

I'm with you on the Pog comment, but if you have Friedel-Fedrici combo then you'll use Friedel for most of the first 10 GWs and you'll surely have no problem setting aside a transfer for a keeper along the way. As for Torres I'm keeping 1mil spare. Then doing a double transfer straight away (Cole --> Rafael and Torres --> Rooney) so I wont be stung 🙂

All I'm saying is Torres is playing rubbish and has done for a long period - this isnt some club who have to make do with what they have, this is Chelsea
Hazard has played up front before - im reserving judgement on the idea that Torres is going to start every game no matter what his performance / goal record is like
