Chelsea have this evening announced the signing of 20-year-old Brazilian Oscar from Internacional for a fee, reportedly in the region of £25 million. The young attacking midfielder, who can play centrally or on the flank, is currently on Olympic duty with his national side, offering us Fantasy managers and Chelsea fans the opportunity to assess his talents in the coming month.

Oscar is the latest acquisition by the Champions League winners who have been quick to flex their financial muscles following their triumph in Munich, capturing the likes of Eden Hazard and Marko Marin. The arrival of the South American playmaker is believed to take their Summer spending well beyond the £50 million mark.

For us Fantasy managers, this latest foray into the market adds further doubt to our selection of Chelsea’s attacking assets. Roberto Di Matteo’s side begin their campaign with a double Gameweek, taking on a trip to Wigan and a midweek home clash with newly promoted Reading. While that pair of fixtures offers obvious incentive for investment, Di Matteo’s first choice lineup is becoming more and more difficult to call by the week.

Chelsea face three league games in the space of six days with a home meeting with Newcastle looming in Gameweek 2; realistically Di Matteo will surely be looking to utilise his options to keep his lineup fresh. It looks difficult, perhaps almost impossible, to find an attacking player who is assured of starting all three of those matches.

We can at least presume that Oscar will take time to bed in and be given a number of weeks to acclimatise before being given a full Premier League debut. However, his arrival in the squad will mean that the uncertainty surrounding our Chelsea selections is set to remain long after the double Gameweek has passed.

We’ll bring you a full Scout Report on Oscar, with more analysis on his likely role and impact in the next 24-hours.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

ROTATION v REGULARS - FULL ANALYSIS

I've compared using last season's data the number of CS you'd get when
    A) Playing a City defender every game: cost = 6.0 + 4.0 = 10.0

    B) Playing whichever team was at home on a given week, in four popular rotations:
    ........B1) NEW/SUN: cost = 4.0 + 4.5 = 8.5
    ........B2) NEW/STO: cost = 4.0 + 4.0 = 8.0
    ........B3) NEW/SWA: cost = 4.0 + 4.0 = 8.0
    ........B4) FUL/SWA: cost = 4.5 + 4.0 = 8.5

If both teams were away or at home, I picked the fixture that was easiest according to the FFS ticker.

    Results:
    A) MCI: 17 CS

    B1) NEW/SUN: 16 CS
    B2) NEW/STO: 14 CS
    B3) NEW/SWA: 17 CS
    B4) FUL/SWA: 16 CS

    Verdict:
City got more or equal CS compared to all the rotations. But the rotations were cheaper. So while you can't get more points from the rotations, they as expected give you better value - IF YOU PICK THE RIGHT ONES.

However, this is based on last year's prices. The cost of each defence this year is as follows:
    A) MCI: cost = 6.5 + 4.0 = 10.5

    B1) NEW/SUN: cost = 5.0 + 4.5 = 9.5
    B2) NEW/STO: cost = 5.0 + 4.5 = 9.5
    B3) NEW/SWA: cost = 5.0 + 5.0 = 10.0
    B4) FUL/SWA: cost = 5.0 + 4.5 = 9.5

So the rotations have got more expensive and the advantage is reduced, if not removed entirely. Obviously you can try to find a new rotation. Unfortunately, if you want the best value you need 4.0 defenders, and given they're all from the promoted sides which don't have brilliant reputations at the back, that could be extremely tricky.

Finally, this analysis applies equally to goalkeepers of course. Personally I'm leaning towards having regular United and City players at the back this season.

Nice compare and contrast between last years prices and this years. In fact I have notices across the game this year that expensive players are cheaper and cheaper players are more expensive. It certainly suggests that there is more value to be had in the more expensive price bracket. Having two big name defenders could be the way to go this year.

I also think there is good value to be had in cheap defenders that are quite attacking especially if they play OOP. There seems to be more potential for that this year. Fabio, Clark, Clyne and a few others could well be playing in more advanced positions.

Yep, Fabio, Clark and Clyne are all names that I'm watching in the pre-season friendlies... Fabio has the greatest interest from me right now, banking on Hughes making Loftus Road a fortress. Clyne was playing on right wing recently apparently..

That's some serious scout work... not exactly sure what to do with it, but maybe that's because I don't pay that close attention to rotation (except in planning an initial keeper pairing). As the season rolls on, I think its more important simply to go with form over some fixture-based rotation system.

For attacking players yes IMO. But no-one wants to waste transfers on defenders, and I see defensive returns as more dependent on fixtures than form - particularly as a CS is a collective achievement. My problem last year was that I didn't get my base - the defence - right and was wasting transfers trying to fight impossible fixtures.

Fair points. I guess its kind of like accepting that you'll be playing the odds with those 2 or 3 cheap defensive spots (better chance of a clean sheet at home) rather than actively predicting who will get those points each week, thus freeing up your "active predictions" for attackers. It makes sense, I like it, but I'm not disciplined enough to NOT take a punt on a Shotton or a Coleman (2 seasons ago) if/when they come on the radar.

Appreciate the research into this, all my tinkering thus far has concluded with big hitting defenders as opposed to rotations. Tried a rotation out and found the same, a defensive line including Lescott , Dawson (although if hes nailed on is still doubtful) and A.Cole was only 2million more than this rotating defence.

I know, and it's true, he got a great run in the side when he was badly needed because the attack had gone off the boil. But it's a marriage of convenience between him and Roberto and I'm not sure Roberto will do the same thing from a position of strength at the start of the season.

I think he'll be over that, otherwise why play him at the end of last season? It's not like City had no other alternatives (Dzeko, Balotelli etc)

Let's also not forget Balloteli let him down with all the red cards and petulance.

I think there is some doubt, but personally I'd be amazed if Tevez didn't start the season.

Dzeko and Balotelli, particularly the former, looked well out of form at that time. I think Tevez was the last option and thankfully he delivered.

Anyway of course we don't know til the teamsheets go up, and we'll get the Community Shield to see if Tevez starts - strong hint perhaps.

Mancini has always seemed much more tolerant of Balotelli than the rest of the squad - they have a kind of father/son relationship. Not quite so with Carlito though..

Looking at having the Big 3 of Rooney Torres Aguero upfront. Decent backline. Only 1 big hitter mid Bale. Ofcourse this will leave me with a weakened midfield, however the plan is to rectify this before GW3 by downgrading Torres, & upgrading a mid. Leaving me free to choose the right players within mindfields of Utd midfield, bargin striker? Thoughts?

I've played around with something like that too (but Jelavic not Torres). To make it work, though, I skimped on the DF to make sure I had Bale and Silva. The difference between a great defender and an ok defender is maybe 30ish points over a season. The difference between a great and ok midfielder is significantly larger.

Thanks Don. I have only taken this approach with the view of the DGW. So 1 Chelsea back must be there. With the DGW if I can get the right Chelsea mid it may just counter not have Silva or 2nd big hitter in there over the first GW. Ramirez or Marin is where I'm looking.

I think this could work well. Long term I like the idea of a Rooney, Aguero, Adebayor strikeforce.

That is an option for downgrade of Torres, however does not leave too much in way of improvement to Mids. will leave me with 8 as upgrade of MArin or Ramires. Wanted to get the best 8.5 Utd mid.

Jinswick I posted this mancini quote earlier...

"At this moment Van Persie is one of the best strikers in Europe with Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Aguero and Mario Balotelli."

Clearly mancini sees tevez as his 3rd best forward. Tevez will get a lot of games but so will Balotelli. I wouldn't touch either

How long ago was that quote? If before the title-run in (where Tevez excelled), I wouldn't read too much into it.

Also, it could just be him talking Balo up for a sale...

Late may season was finished and balo was yet to kill it at euro. He was talking about signing rvp. Fwiw I agree with him that purely based on talent aguero & Balotelli are the best after Messi & Ronaldo

Yeah twas March sorry, point is simple though just wanna point out how highly mancini rates balo and kun. Anyone that expects tevez to play each week clearly doesn't realise how good Balotelli is

The Super Mario hype is madness. Mancini was ranting about selling him just this April, and Prandelli was furious with him before his one big game (Germany's defending was shambolic on top of that...).

no way should we read anything into this result. If this game were scrutinized like a real game, the talking points would be that chelsea were dominant and that the ref missed two clear PK calls in the last 10 min that would have put MLS away.

This is simply one of those reminders that football is funny sometimes (like the title going from Man U to Man City in stoppage time on the last day of the season)

double arsenal DF with their opening fixtures and general uncertainties seems like a bit of a red flag, as does no Spurs coverage. I think stoke, too, have a rough go at the start: walters' services are not all that desirable to me. I like the distribution of funds though.
