Chelsea have this evening announced the signing of 20-year-old Brazilian Oscar from Internacional for a fee, reportedly in the region of £25 million. The young attacking midfielder, who can play centrally or on the flank, is currently on Olympic duty with his national side, offering us Fantasy managers and Chelsea fans the opportunity to assess his talents in the coming month.

Oscar is the latest acquisition by the Champions League winners who have been quick to flex their financial muscles following their triumph in Munich, capturing the likes of Eden Hazard and Marko Marin. The arrival of the South American playmaker is believed to take their Summer spending well beyond the £50 million mark.

For us Fantasy managers, this latest foray into the market adds further doubt to our selection of Chelsea’s attacking assets. Roberto Di Matteo’s side begin their campaign with a double Gameweek, taking on a trip to Wigan and a midweek home clash with newly promoted Reading. While that pair of fixtures offers obvious incentive for investment, Di Matteo’s first choice lineup is becoming more and more difficult to call by the week.

Chelsea face three league games in the space of six days with a home meeting with Newcastle looming in Gameweek 2; realistically Di Matteo will surely be looking to utilise his options to keep his lineup fresh. It looks difficult, perhaps almost impossible, to find an attacking player who is assured of starting all three of those matches.

We can at least presume that Oscar will take time to bed in and be given a number of weeks to acclimatise before being given a full Premier League debut. However, his arrival in the squad will mean that the uncertainty surrounding our Chelsea selections is set to remain long after the double Gameweek has passed.

We’ll bring you a full Scout Report on Oscar, with more analysis on his likely role and impact in the next 24-hours.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      Sunderland and probably Villa a bit higher for me. Stoke will be OK and I' expect one of Norwich or Swansea to do very badly.

        Spuds and Liverpool will finish outside the top four.

        Newcastle will have another good season.

        Arsenal will win the league.

            Because they aren't better than City, Chelsea or United. They'll also be losing Modric, can't see how they'll come 3rd let alone 2nd.

            We're losing our best player whilst United, Chelsea have signed good players and City are far stronger anyway. 4th would be our best hope IMO.

            it looks like they will be weakened from last year, unlikely to have Adebayor and likely to lose Modric. Then that leaves just Defoe as a striker.

            Vertonghen is a great addition but he cant make all the difference on his own.

            Perhaps if they sign great replacements then they can be re-evaluated

              Ade not dead in the water yet - I'm still confident we'll sign him. If not there's no way we'll go in without at least one more striker.

              That said even on the very optimistic assumption that we land Moutinho, Ade and Lloris - I still think 4th is realistic.

    Thoughts on my team?
    Friedel Federici
    Lescott A Cole Koscielny Fabio Demel
    Lampard Bale Sinclair Taarabt Noble
    Torres Aguero Pog
    I will probably trade Torres Koscielny and Pog to Graham Colloncini and Suarez/Ade/Other 9.5 striker

      Liking the GK combo, exactly the same as I'm currently favouring, not convinced with Demel, Taarabt or Pog however.

      Jenkinson is my favoured Arsenal def to begin with however.

    Warning - tl;dr post ahead...

    With all the talk of rotation at the moment it got me thinking about how reliable some of the underlying principles of our rotation plans are. I've had a little play around with some stats to determine how much more likely teams are to keep cleansheets at home than they are away.

    The results are mostly as expected (around 60% of cleansheets go to the home team) but there are a few interesting stats I thought I'd share:

    4 current Premier League clubs kept more clean sheets away from home than at home last season
    * Fulham 5h, 6a
    * Aston Villa 4h, 5a
    * Liverpool 5h, 7a
    * West Ham 7h, 10a

    (Obviously West Ham's stats are from the Championship and not many people will be bringing in Liverpool defenders to rotate but food for thought perhaps?)

    The teams with the highest ratio of home:away cleansheets (and therefore best candidates for rotation) in 2010/11 were:
    * Norwich 3h, 0a (I know, I know but technically this gives them the best ratio)
    * West Brom 8h, 2a
    * Wigan 6h, 2a
    * QPR 5h, 2a
    * Stoke 6h, 3a
    * Sunderland 8h, 4a

    I also looked at stats covering the last 3 seasons to see if any wider patterns emerged:
    * Interestingly, Newcastle are the least predictable of the current Premier League clubs with just 53% of their clean sheets over the last 3 years coming at home. This puts them just behind QPR, Liverpool and Fulham.
    * West Brom top the 3 year averages with an impressive 78% of clean sheets coming at home. The best of the rest are Arsenal, Tottenham, Southampton and Norwich.

    All of the above includes cleansheets obtained when in lower divisions where applicable.

    This is by no means intended to detract from the incredibly in depth rotation planning which has been going on, but maybe just add a little caution.

    Obviously there are an enormous amount of factors not considered - changes in managers, players, injuries, timing of fixtures, etc. but it's as much as I can be bothered to do right now.

    Questions? 😉

      Interesting to see that about Newcastle. Near the end of the season I went on gut instinct largely with Mignolet/Krul/Al-Habsi. Worked a treat.

        Last season Newcastle hit the 60% average mark - it was the year before where they kept more away than at home which brought the overall figure down.

        I think the playing by gut approach is a good one - too often I blindly bench the defender away from home despite a good run of form.

        Swansea were just below my cut off to make the commentary, they performed well at home (obviously) but maybe better than people think away from home 9h, 5a - same as Tottenham. They've averaged 64% over the last 3 seasons which is pretty high.

            Exactly. Plus the other 14 players who scored for Arsenal last season.

            Podolski has 100 caps for Germany and Giroud was the top scorer in Ligue 1 last season. Afobe is also breaking into the first team.

            Besides that, Diaby is fit and Jack is coming back.

            Van Persie scored a lot of goals, but so did Rooney and Aguero. I don't know why people think that Van Persie is the messiah. Van Persie is not the messiah.

      Pog has to go . I would downgrade Valencia to Kagawa and upgrade Pog to Maiga .

    Just watched a bit of footage of LAG v Chelsea and Lamps looked pretty active with his goal and assist even though Chelsea lost 3-2

        Wasn't enough footage to tell but he got forward well for the goal and took the corner for the assist

      Lampard and Marin have been the stand out performers in the friendlies so far. Thought Hazard has been so over rated and FPL options look more prosperous in Frank and Marin.

        Lamps has got to be good value at 9mil and still a v important player for Chelsea

    Michu is finally added to game. Looks like FPL towers also saw his La Liga stats pricing him at 6.5m. Going to be a lot of unhappy people on here now 😉
