Gareth Bale and Gylfi Sigurdsson grab the goals as Spurs see of New York Red Bulls. QPR continue their winning ways with a 3-0 triumph at Wycombe, Anthony Pilkington helps Norwich to a draw against Ajax, Swansea are held by San Jose Earthquakes, while Man City hand five of their Euro 2012 contingent their first game time of pre-season at Oldham:

Wycombe 0 QPR 3
Mark Hughes’ side kept up their 100% pre-season record with a fourth straight win last night. Fabio started in midfield once again for QPR alongside fellow new boy Ji-Sung Park, while Djibril Cisse returned after a recent hamstring scare to lead the line. QPR had several early chances, with the Cisse and Shaun Wright-Phillips both having a couple of opportunities, while Armand Traore was a menace down the left flak before being subbed off with a hamstring knock. Adel Taarabt continued his recent good form and also went close before setting up the opener for Jamie Mackie just before the half-hour mark. After the break, Cisse and Wright-Phillips again came close to finding the net before the latter finally notched the strike his threat deserved, slotting home from a Hogan Ephraim pass on 71 minutes. Hughes made five changes over the space of the second-half, including the reintroduction of Kieran Dyer after long-term injury; the former West Ham man needed just 15 minutes to make an impact, with Nedum Onouha nodding home his corner with three minutes remaining on the clock.

QPR Starting XI: Green; Onuoha, Ferdinand, Hill, Traore (Ephraim 36); Fabio, Park (Derry 73), Taarabt (Dyer 73),Wright-Phillips (Doughty 90); Mackie (Johnson 62), Cisse (Zamora 62).

Oldham 2 Man City XI 1
The City Elite Development Squad made their way to Oldham last night and included several first-team players who have yet to feature in pre-season so far. While the likes of Joe Hart, Joleon Lescott, Gael Clichy, Samir Nasri and Nigel De Jong were all afforded just 45 minutes apiece in the 2-1 defeat, the main point of note here was that City once again lined up in the new 3-5-2 formation they have trialled in the recent tour of Asia. Roque Santa Cruz popped up to grab his side’s only goal but the game was no more than a workout for the regulars before they all departed at the break.

Man City Starting XI: Hart; Facey, McGivern, Lescott,; Wabara, Milner, Nasri, De Jong, Clichy; Santa Cruz, Jelovic.

Subs used: Kennedy, Lawlor, Leigh, Hiwula, Huws, Drury, Rusnak, Bunn, Glendon.

Norwich 1 Ajax 1
Chris Hughton rolled out a 4-4-2 for the game against the Dutch champions. James Vaughan continued up front after his recent impressive pre-season displays and was joined by Grant Holt, while Anthony Pilkington and Elliott Bennett took the wing roles, with new boy Robert Snodgrass on the bench. Pilkington handed his side the lead on just seven minutes with a superbly taken free-kick after Vaughan had been felled on the edge of the box – according to the club’s official website, the latter was a constant menace to Ajax, with his pace causing them problems time and again and drawing several fouls from the Dutch defence. Surprisingly, Vaughan was then replaced at half-time; on came Wes Hoolahan as Hughton went 4-4-1-1, with Holt the lone forward. Ajax took control after the break and limited the hosts to a couple of long-range efforts – Hughton made seven further changes as the game progressed but despite the introduction of Snodgrass with 20 minutes remaining, they were unable to test their opponents and had to display plenty of resilience to see out the game for a draw.

Norwich Starting XI: Ruddy; R. Martin (Ayala 80), Ward (Barnett 80), R. Bennett, Tierney (Lappin 86); E. Bennett (Snodgrass 69), Johnson,(Morison 78),Howson (Surman 69), Pilkington (Crofts 69); Vaughan (Hoolahan 46), Holt

New York Red Bulls 1 Tottenham 2

Gareth Bale made an immediate return to action following his recent ankle injury scare to net his second pre-season goal and help earn Spurs the victory over the Red Bulls. Andre Villas-Boas’ side were trailing at the break but Bale’s header from a Gylfi Sigurdsson corner and then a smart strike from the Icelandic midfielder put Spurs in the ascendency. Sigurdsson came out of the game with a goal and an asssit then: he is currently playing his part at set-pieces and looks assured of some role in that area going into the season kick-off. Villas-Boas began with a 4-2-3-1 formation once again, handing starts to the likes of Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone and David Bentley – all players that have, so far, dipped under the Fantasy radar following injuries. Bale not only played out 74 minutes, he also started in the unfamiliar striker role, with Spurs options limited by Jermain Defoe’s absence due to a family bereavement.

Tottenham Starting XI: Gomes; Walker (Naughton, 60), Dawson, vertonghen (Gallas, 46), Assou-Ekotto (Bassong, 83); Huddlestone (Jenas, 46), Livermore (Carroll, 61); Lennon (Smith, 83), Sigurdsson (Kaboul, 83), Bentley (Kane, 46); Bale (Townsend, 74).

San Jose Earthquakes 2 Swansea 2

Michael Laudrup started Jonathan De Guzman in a deeper central midfield role once more – with reports suggesting Joe Allen is edging closer to a move to Liverpool, it may well be that the Dutchman is pencilled in to take over that position next term. Michu continued in “the hole”, while Wayne Routledge was preferred to Nathan Dyer on the right yet again. Routledge impressed out wide, creating chances for Danny Graham and Michu but the pair failed to take advantage – indeed, the former blasted a couple of opportunities wide before opening the scoring on 41 minutes after a mistake by the opposition defence. The Swans almost went two ahead straight away. Ben Davies – who has turned in some strong performances in the absence of Neil Taylor – set up Luke Moore down the left and the winger played in Michu, who once again failed to trouble the keeper. Chico then put his side further ahead after the break, nodding home his first goal in Swansea colours from an Ashley Williams cross, but Laudrup’s decision to change all 10 of his outfield players disrupted Swansea’s rhythm and allowed the hosts to claw their way back and level the match with a couple of goals later on.

Swansea starting XI: Vorm, Rangel (Richards 45), Chico (Monk 75), Williams (Tate 62), Davies (Bessone 80), Britton (Agustien 62), de Guzman (Gower 75), Michu (Orlandi 80), Routledge (Dyer 45),Graham (Lita 75), Moore (Dobbie 62).

    Dear Manchester City,

Seeing as you're richer than rich, would you kindly bid £45m for Andy Carroll. I'll personally travel from London to Liverpool, pick him up and drive him to Manchester for you. With this I'll also give a complementary gift of an Arsenal striker.

Yours sincerely, Bash aka Gervinho's Forhead.

Ps; If you decline this offer, I'll headbutt your stadium.

If money has nothing to do with it, It's clear, isn't it? He actually wants to challenge for the title/Champions League. In his mind (whether you or I agree with him or not) that can't happen in the near future for Arsenal.

Of course money isn't the thing, he definitely wants to challenge for titles but this team is a lot stronger than Arsenal has been in a very long time. If they sign another player as well then they could be contenders. Hope he's not making a big mistake.

Money is the most likely reason, regardless of what RVP says. In my opinion, even though they won Serie A last year, Juventus is still a step down footballing wise from Arsenal.. Not the step up that Barca, Real, Man Utd would be.

Hope he either commits or leaves asap. Our squad is looking strong for the season ahead with or without him.

They are nowhere near ready to challenge for the Champions League, no nearer than Arsenal.

Let's be honest, Serie A is not as prestigious as it once was and is certainly second grade to the Premiership and La Liga.

Sorry didn't quite know how to phrase it, I think for what he wants it'll be a step down. He wants to win domestic titles but I think he really wants a CL, I don't think Juve will be able to give that to him.

I disagree, Juve will be able to challenge for CLs, possibly more so than Arsenal. They have an excellent squad with its core Italian contingent getting to the final of the Euros.

Italian football may not be where it once was but it is not 2nd rate, they just dont have as much money as they used to have. They will be back, its all about cycles

I'd agree that they will be back definitely but I think, at VPs age and with his injuries, he needs a team that will be a heavy contender this season. I just am not seeing Juve competing for it this season. They do have an excellent squad, I think it's more a question of time for VP. He needs success soon since we all know how injury prone he is and as he ages though injuries don't heal so well.

I've decided to abandon Fernando Torres.....he just hasn't got the minerals. Could see some bench too...

Rooney and Aguero are locked in with perfect rotation of captain duties at home games.

Having a punt on Pog in week 1 only, leaving 1m in the bank, and first transfer is Pog (5.0) to Danny Graham (6.0) for week 2. (Can't get stuck in the Pog Trap!)

Swansea has 5 of 7 homes games between weeks 2 and 8, with all mid table or less opponents including 2 promoted teams at home.

Then leave Rooney, Aguero, Graham to go nuts...

See how we go into the preseason friendly against Cologne and judge from there.

As it stands, I'd say he's not far off guaranteed to be starting GW1 and has looked very good in preseason. He'll get a lot of gametime this season, even if some of it will be off the bench. At 7.5 million and starting OOP in a front three, he seems a real bargain to me!

Today seems to be heavy day going by the lighweight defences in some of these RMT's. Defences may not rack up huge points hauls but in my experience you need at least 2 solid defenders (upwards of 5m in value) with 3 cheapies to rotate around. I have been doing FPL for a number of years and every attempt that I have made to start the season with a lighweight defnce has failed, and the result has required heavy points hits to put right.

I'd agree with that. I have spent a bit on defence because it can still give a steady stream of points, no massive returns but constant good ones.

Will be interesting to see what FPL value Vlaar at (5.0m is my hunch). Word is he is in the similar mould of Martin Laursen, who was FPL gold a few seasons back. Defon one for the watch list

Lowton and Lichaj are RB's btw

Clichy - Mancini has a fetish for FB rotation.
          Kaboul - Dawson.
Kagawa - newcomer and whilst will play, isn't nailed on and could be prone to cameos.
I like Valencia as an option, though.

    This is my current team

    Friedel – Federici
    Ivanovic – Williams – Clichy – Clyne – Gunter
    Silva – Hazard – Sinclair – Maloney – Frei
    Pogrebnyak – Aguero – Torres

2.0m left over for torres to rooney swap

I want to downgrade sinclair to free up 1m to allow me to swap pog for graham/petric. However I’m very much keen on a few 6.5 midfielders rather than 6.0m is it worth downgrading federici to cerny to allow me to fund the move for pog to graham/petric and downgrade sinclair to a 6.5 midfielder such as michu/larsson/mcclean/pienaar.

    Rio / Riise / Shawcross / Coloccini / Harte
    Gerrard / Hazard / Kagawa / Wright-Phillips / Michu
    Bent / Torres / Petric

I like Gerrard for a bounce back, Bent under new management and Torres due to double and lack of competition. Rio seems value, as does Riise and Harte if he really takes pens. Otherwise I am struggling for a sure fire midfielder.

Have you seen Liverpool don't you remember Liverpool always rise to the big games, the small games against lower sides is where they lose points especially considering the three tough games are at home I am confident that Liverpool can suprise a few people, and people may be underestimating their ability to perform and their players to score big.

Gah, work isn't half a distraction from FFS. First serious conversation I've started and I get called away. The AVB and Porto clean sheets thing.

The revelation for me was simply that it was *possible* to have big clean sheet potential with a high backline. In my ignorance, I thought defensive vulnerability was the inevitable price you pay for the approach. Porto's amazing CS season under AVB proves that wrong and now Spurs' defence is back on my radar, especially Dawson for 5.0

And I do think it's OK to treat Chelsea as an aberration. They are a very unusual team, with several huge egos playing out their sunset years. It is not surprising that they didn't adapt to a wholly new system of play from a young manager they didn't respect. Spurs are a different kettle of fish entirely.

With a high back line you need pressure on the ball to stop the through balls. Chelsea didn't have the players to stop the through balls. Parker Sandro could do this for AVB at spurs. Failing that the pace of BAE and Walker could get them out of trouble. I fancy them to be tight
