Chris Hughton’s Norwich play out a goalless draw at MK Dons and record a third clean sheet in four. Sir Alex Ferguson admits he has a dilemma over the goalkeeper’s position at United, Paul Lambert talks up the potential of Charles N’Zogbia and Stephen Ireland, while Reading’s Jimmy Kebe looks set to miss the start of the season with a hamstring problem:

MK Dons 0 Norwich 0

Chris Hughton handed new boys Robert Snodgrass and Michael Turner their first starts for Norwich at MK Dons last night. The Canaries boss rolled out a 4-5-1, with forwards Chris Martin and Simeon Jackson on the flanks and Steve Morison the lone frontman. Both Snodgrass and Jackson impressed – the former’s set-pieces and eye for a killer pass caused chaos throughout the first-half and created plenty of chances, while the latter passed up a trio of opportunities to break the deadlock prior to the break. The two new signings almost combined to give the visitors the lead early in the second-half –Turner met a Snodgrass corner only to see his header superbly saved before he made way for Ryan Bennett on 65 minutes. Stout defending from MK Dons limited Norwich’s offensive forays as the game rolled on and, aside from a Martin effort late on, the Canaries failed to threaten as the match finished goalless.

Despite an inability to find the net, Hughton will no doubt take solace in the fact that his side are, yet again, showing a greater defensive resilience over pre-season – this was their third clean sheet in the last four matches. With a mere three clean sheets to their name over the entirety of 2011/12, Norwich’s failure to shut out their opponents has seen their defensive options handed kind price tags for the upcoming campaign – an upturn in output at the back could well see the likes of Marc Tierney (4.0 in FPL) earmarked by Fantasy managers if he can nail down a regular role at left-back next term.

Norwich Starting XI: Rudd; Francomb, Barnett, Turner (R. Bennett 65), Lappin; Jackson (Josh Murphy 79), Surman, Hoolahan, Snodgrass, C. Martin; Morison

In Other News…
As Fantasy managers eye up Reading’s assets ahead of their double Gameweek 1, the Royals right winger Jimmy Kebe looks set to miss out. The club’s official website revealed he is “unlikely” to be ready in time to face Stoke and Chelsea due to an ongoing hamstring problem, after undergoing scans earlier this week. This looks good news for summer signing Garath McCleary to step into Brian McDermott’s starting XI – the former Forest man comes in at 5.0 in FPL and a mere 4.3 in the Sky Sports game. Reading also revealed Chris Gunter has yet to recover from the ankle problem that has forced him out of the last couple of pre-season matches – he is set to miss today’s friendly against Bournemouth as a result.

Sir Alex Ferguson hinted that the goalkeeper’s position is far from settled at United yesterday after Anders Lindegaard signed a new four-year deal at Old Trafford. While many Fantasy managers have pencilled in David De Gea due to the Spaniard’s 6.0 FPL price tag, Ferguson admitted to the club’s official website that the choice between the two is a tough one to call and is set to give him a dilemma in the season ahead:

Anders has come on leaps and bounds since joining us last year There is healthy competition in the goalkeeping department, which is always good for the team, albeit a headache for me! I am delighted to see that he has clearly returned from the summer break in good shape after the disappointment of suffering an injury last season

Paul Lambert reckons both Charles N’Zogbia and Stephen Ireland are set to be key players for Villa next season. The pair were huge disappointments under previous boss Alex McLeish but Lambert’s more attack-minded approach paid dividend at Norwich last term and he anticipates the duo will be crucial to his side’s success in the upcoming campaign. N’Zogbia, at 6.5 in FPL and 5.7 in the Sky Sports game, and Ireland priced at 5.5 and 5.0 in the respective Fantasy games, could well be intriguing mid-price alternatives if they live up to their manager’s faith, with Lambert saying:

Stephen is a real talent, there’s no doubt about that. It shows when he plays because there is a lot of creativity there, just like Charles. They are both really talented footballers. We will try to get the best out of them because they are very, very clever footballers. We’ve got to get Ireland in positions where he can hurt teams. I’ve got a fair idea of what I want to do with him.

Cerny currently selected by 14.7% playing FPL...is Green certain to be first choice @QPR? 😕

A £4m keeper in Cerny playing frequently would be great for my bench! 😉

So they are spending 11m on one position that happens to offer the least points potential.

I'm guessing a few of these are automatic selections.

If Cerny doesn't play regularly the price should drop. By GW6 you might end up having a 3.8 back-up GK to help justify spending 7.0 on Hart.

Even more ridiculous pick when you consider that Green is probably the best 4.5 GK option going with everything considered.

It's a similar sort of shape to mine in terms of player values in positions so I quite like it! Best front line out there imo.

I've got Hazard over Mata, Michu over Sinclair, Maloney over Noble so similar options there it's just personal view on who will score more.

Not really a fan of your keepers, but don't like mine either really (Vorm/Federici).

RVP's the real problem. Hardly anyone has him in their RMT's but if he's playing for a PL club by the end of the window it'll be a risk to go without him.

Hope he goes to Juve! Then I can have Aguero and Rooney and not have to think about playing 2nd fiddle to RVP.

    Weak in defence, big elsewhere.

    Ivanovic--Saylor--Cuellar--McCartney--Wilson
    -----Silva--Bale--Dempsey--Noble--Guthrie
    ------------Rooney--Torres--Graham

        So you don't like the 2 x 2 rotation?

Aside from week 7, those 4 defenders give me good fixtures.

The keepers suck, but the only other 4.5/4.5 option seems to be Jass/Bego, and I already have Sto/WHM defence + unsure if Bego will play all the time.

just think that a city/united's defender will be better. won't leave points on bench.
save ur headache choosing who to play (especially when away team show form)

It saves me money, and with New/Sun/Sto - I have three teams all very capable of keeping a CS even against the top teams. You're right about points on the bench though. I'm also terrified of Aguero.

    Hi all
Fairly happy with this (monitoring the DDG and Tevez situation obviously)
    DDG Federici
    Cole Lescott Hangeland Cuellar Fabio
Hazard Kagawa Michu Noble Ireland (punt but might play in the hole and good early fixtures)
    Torres Tevez Petric
2.5 in the bank - probably Torres to Rooney and then 0.5 spare. Should I do Kagawa to a 9.0 mid?
    Opinions really appreciated.

Havent changed a single player in 3 days. I can't find many faults in it atm. Couple of question marks over Chelsea starters but will know more closer to the time and easy to budget for Iva > Cole, Mata > Hazard/Lamps doesnt affect the rest of my team.

    Federici (Friedel)
    Ivanovic, Hangeland, McCartney (Cuellar, Rangel)
    Noble, Pienaar, Mata, Bale (Maloney)
    Torres, Aguero, Graham

    2m in bank.

The season ticker and SGP scores seem to think this team will get off to a good start.

That said have come in top 4 of my works FPL since we have been doing it (and even won it once)

Anyway by current thinking has given me the following

    De Gea / Jaaskelainen

Dawson (seems people suggest he will Captain Spurs) / Fonte / Lescott / Demel / Ashley Cole

Noble / Kagawa (always served me well in Football Manager 🙂 ) / Hazard / Guthrie / Yaya Toure

    Rooney / Torres / Graham

So any advice or tweaks would be appreciated
    Cheers Guys

I think it looks pretty good, keep an eye out on Dawson, he might not start.

Having Kagawa + Hazard (both unproven in Prem) is a big risk IMO, but it might pay off handsomely.

I can't see Yaya getting many of those City points.

I'd worry about De Gea starting every game.

How should you think I should tweak ?

Think id like to risk Hazard more than Kag (purely due to the double game week) but no idea who to replace him with

Same for Toure - those two are probably my big doubts

im thinking Kagawa to Pienaar and Toure to Bale (possible being used upfront)

Would I be better off with Lamps instead of Hazard ?
Or is rotation among Chelsea midfield a big risk ?

The onlt CHE mid I'm considering is Ramires TBH, that would save you a lot of cash...

And yeah, Bale is one of the top choices for sure, but I'd worry not having any City attackers (or just Yaya 😉 )

It's really up to you, I curently have the same front three as you, but have Silva in an attempt to cover Ciy's inevitable big hauls, I'd want either him or Aguero for sure.

I'd downgrade De Gea, perhaps to Vorm, Szczesny or Freidel, if you want one top goalie.

There are a lot of decent 5.5 - 8 priced mids to choose from, I like Pienaar the most from the start, from the cheaper options.

        De Gea + 4.5 = 10.5
        Cech + 4.5 = 11
        Hart + 4.0 = 11
        Friedel + Federichi = 10

My gut says McCartney, but looking through the reports on West Ham's last 6 or 7 games on way to promotion last season, it appears Demel was right back, and McCartney was benched, with either Gary O'Neil or Matty Taylor playing left back....

      Expensive Keepers

Dawson and Rafael are risks, wait and see closer to the time.

I'd want a more established point scoring striker

Haz and Kag is too risky for me - would rather have Lamps/Ramires & Valencia

Yaya, I don't think will be getting many of City's goals.

Stoke's strong defence is, to an extent, a myth. Their CS returns since reaching the PL are:

      2011/12: 9 - 6 home, 3 away
      2010/11: 9 - 6 home, 3 away
      2009/10: 14 - 7 home, 7 away
      2008/09: 12 - 9 home, 3 away

In the two most recent seasons they have returned a total of 12 clean sheets at home.

Ok, 2009/10 looks good but half the cleanies came away from home and nobody around here has any confidence in banking Stoke players away from home. Not to mention it was a long time ago.

Their cheapest defender that will actually play is 4.5m and has scored once in over 6000 minutes of Premiership football. There are teams with 4.5m options that I prefer. Cuellar and Fabio for example.

Maybe I was spoilt by Swansea and Newcastle last season but I'd aim for more than 6 cleanies from a 4.5.

Pool failed to score loads of times last season.

All the top teams struggled at the Brittania but, Chelsea aside, they all scored. While Stoke don't concede that many the CS returns are poor in the last 2 seasons.
