A goal from Jermaine Defoe is enough for Spurs to see off Watford. Nemanja Vidic returns as Antonio Valencia is fielded at right-back for United’s draw at Valarenga, Edin Dzeko bags a brace in City’s stroll in Limerick, while Everton and Wigan both fall to defeat at the hands of Blackpool and Real Mallorca respectively:

Watford 0 Tottenham 1
Andre Villas-Boas continued with the 4-2-3-1 formation which has served his side over all their games thus far – Jermaine Defoe’s predatory instincts made the difference after he nodded home a Kyle Walker cross in the second-half. Priced at 7.5 in FPL, Defoe is an intriguing prospect if he can nail down the lone forward role, particularly with such a strong opening schedule – certainly, the club’s attempts to acquire Emmanuel Adebayor on a permanent basis seem to be weakening by the day right now and, with Gareth Bale, Gylffi Sigurdsson and Rafael Van der Vaart battling for our midfield attention, whoever finally lands the lone forward role at Tottenham for the season ahead will undoubtedly be a popular pick amongst Fantasy managers. Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen were introduced after the break yesterday, with the club’s official website heralding the Belgian’s ability to bring the ball out from defence and instigate attacks. The clean sheet means Spurs have conceded just two goals in five games under Villas-Boas, suggesting their backline perhaps has the ability to adapt to their manager’s tactics a little better than his former club Chelsea.

Spurs Starting XI: Friedel (Cudicini, 46); Naughton (Walker, 46), Kaboul, Gallas (Vertonghen, 46), Assou-Ekotto; Jenas (Sigurdsson, 46), Livermore (Bentley, 79); Carroll (Huddlestone, 66), Lennon, Bale (Townsend, 75); Defoe (Kane, 66).

Wigan 0 Real Mallorca 2
Roberto Martinez handed new boy Ivan Ramis a start in the back-three but despite their possession game dominating play, Wigan were caught on the counter and slumped to their first pre-season defeat yesterday afternoon. Whilst Mauro Boselli’s recent goal spree has hogged the headlines, Martinez handed Franco Di Santo the chance to lead the line for the Latics. Di Santo was a strong threat over the first 45 before making way for Boselli at the break – he had three chances, with an effort ruled out, while Boselli failed to impress in the second-half.

Wigan Starting XI: Al Habsi; Ramis (Lopez 45), Caldwell, Alcaraz; Boyce (Stam 45), McCarthy (Fyvie 86), Gomez, Beausejour; Maloney, Moses, Di Santo (Boselli 45)

Limerick 0 Man City 4
Yet again, City rolled out a 3-5-2 formation, as Roberto Mancini handed some of his Euro 2012 contingent game time yesterday. Edin Dzeko gave his manager food for thought after bagging a brace in his first start of pre-season – while clearly short of sharpness, the Bosnian is perhaps currently ahead of Mario Balotelli in the pecking order up front. Neither Balotelli or David Silva have featured at all in pre-season, with the suggestion that both could be a doubt for the season kick-off. It could also mean that Dzeko could be handed game time if Sergio Aguero or Carlos Tevez needs replacing during games right now – once Baltotelli gets his fitness up to speed, however, he is surely set to vie with Tevez for starts. With regards to formation and frontman options, next Sunday’s Community Shield will hopefully shed more light on Mancini’s thinking ahead of the season opener with Southampton.

Man City Starting XI: Pantilimon; Evans (Wabara 57), McGivern (Lopes 46), Lescott; Boyata, Milner, Nasri (Scapuzzi 32), Suarez, Clichy; Dzeko (Bunn 70), Santa Cruz,(Facey 73).

Valeranga 0 Man United 0
Nemanja Vidic was handed an hour’s game time in his first start for eight months as United played out a stalemate in Norway. The worrying news for Fantasy managers was the sight of Antonio Valencia beginning the match as a right-back – Nani was afforded the right wing role in his first outing since Euro 2012, while Anders Lindegaard got the nod over David De Gea between the posts. Ashley Young started on the left, while Wayne Rooney was partnered by Danny Welbeck up top as Sir Alex Ferguson rolled out a 4-4-2. The latter spurned several opportunities to find the net before making way for Shinji Kagawa on the hour mark, as United moved to 4-4-1-1. Playing in “the holeâ€, the Japanese midfielder’s creativity caught the eye – he twice provided chances for his team mates but United – despite their dominance –continued to flounder in front of goal and had to settle for a draw. Ferguson’s side have found the net just three times in four pre-season matches thus far, though the upside is their defensive displays – the Old Trafford outfit have registered a trio of clean sheets over those games but their resilience will be firmly out to the test on Wednesday when they square up to Barcelona.

Man United Starting XI: Lindegaard; Valencia, Vidic (Anderson 61), Ferdinand, Keane; Nani, Carrick, Scholes (Powell 75), Young (Lingard 75); Rooney (Hernandez76), Welbeck (Kagawa 61).

Blackpool 2 Everton 0
Nikica Jelavic and Steven Naismith started for the first time together since the latter’s summer move from Glasgow Rangers and the pair offered some glimpses of their previous partnership at Ibrox before the Croatian was subbed off at the break. Steven Pienaar was afforded his first game time since returning to the club from Tottenham and teed up Marouane Fellaini to net in the second minute but the effort was ruled out for offside. Naismith and Leon Osman both came close in the second-half but with David Moyes making a host of changes after the break, Everton fell off the pace and slumped to their first defeat in four pre-season matches.

Everton Starting XI: Mucha, Neville, Heitinga, Duffy (Bidwell), Baines (Garbutt); Coleman, Fellaini (Vellios), Gibson (Barkley), Pienaar (Osman 46); Naismith (Rodwell 70); Jelavic (Anichebe 46).

Who ever called him a "must have" he was a good option for 6.0.
He still is a good option for 6,but the consensus with form and also having good fixtures is to go for Petric.
Petric isn't a must have either.

I guess its because Petric have scored 5 goals in 4 games and people think hes a better option.. Im considering it myself, but I will actually try to look at their next game and look at his stats much more before I decide anything...

I figured he'd be better than Petric because he is playing for an attacking team with good fixtures and more importantly he has Premier League experience. Petric could be good but one thing I've learnt playing this game is that you need to start well and the more solid FPL performers you have from the start the better chance you have of starting well. No point in throwing in Michu, Kagawa, Hazard, Petric etc. all at the same time.

I really love this site, and lots of members contributing.. but sometimes its dangerous.
People ask Q like, whos the better player.. and random people whom u dont know answer, lots of people reading and starting bandwagons. When I answer someone, I give my opp based on what I have actually seen myself plus stats (dont lie). I could ofc still be wrong, but if I give more information to why I rate someone higher its easier for everyone else to decide if they should belive me or not.
So plz people, backup your answers with more than just a players name..

Seriously though what often happens is there is a big discussion/debate about for example Williams or Hangeland, when that question gets asked again later you will only get the resultant answer and not the entire debate again. Of course other times people will just give you the one in their team as this is obviously the one they prefer. There is no "right" answer just opinions on who is most likely to score best.

Thats what im trying to say man.. its the "why" thats important to me to learn and get more information.. After all, at the end of the season there might not be any diff at all between a lot of players thats asked about now.. take the McClean - Larsson example, they could both end up with 130 points each, this game is not only about season keepers, but to be "lucky" (information and stats = better luck) with your transfers, bringing in that player who will go mad for 5 games 🙂

Seems as though Mancini is seriously considering playin 3-5-2 with Kolarov as a wing back. Plus obviously he has all the usual Kolarov attributes.

However, Clichy has only just come back into the fray and so it's a no-goer at the moment.

Zabalabaleta on the other hand is a very real consideration.

Since Clichy got back to pre-season only yesterday, there's talk that he may not start the first few games. This along with the 3-5-2 system City are using right now seems to be in Kolarov's favor.

    Fed/ DDG
    Cole, Lescott, Demel, Fonte, Gunter
    Bale, Lampard, Sinclair, Noble, Guthrie
    Torres, Aguero, Graham

2m left for blah, blah ...

Are those three the best 3 defenders at 4m?
    Petric or Graham?

Dont change Lampard he is good value for the DGW
Dont change your defence as S Taylor is 5.0 and it would ruin the balance of your team in price. Currently it will be easy for you to make transfers. We wont know yet the best 4.0 but I have Mariappa and a lot have McCartney, Gunter may or may not be a regular
Defence is solid as it is two big hitters with a rotation and goalkeepers are fine just that I would not have DDG personally
Petric for form and Graham for Season long

Other than Hart and Jelavic it isn't really non-generic.

But anyways, think you need more City cover than Yaya. One of Aguero or Silva, preferably Aguero.

Good balance. That said, again, Aguero + Torres could hurt you.

This will do well long term though. Monitor the Utd midfield and change Lamps to that MF eventually.

Now I have put the final piece in, I am thinking that it's not too bad on the balance side of things:

    Green/Davis

    A Cole / A Ferdnand / Simpson / Hangeland / Kaboul
    Valencia / Yaya / Bale / Walters / Obertan
    Torres / Aguero / Pogrebnyak

    0.5m in the bank.

Simpson situation still unsure, but he's likely to be on the way out.

Get Saylor or Coloccini or Santon in for him, they're better attacking options anyways.

"I'm expecting Gabby Obertan and Sylvain Marveaux to be back and raring to go," Pardew said last week.

"They are two players that can have big seasons for us next year."

From Alan Pardew in June - admittedly things might change, however he is going to be a benchwarmer in my team anyway. I will address the situaton as the season unfolds and if he's getting game time or not.

No I won't b ekeeping Torres, he's in for the DGW and I liked the look of his form in the Euros. Looking to ship him out for GW3 - for who I am not sure yet, Papiss is on the radar once his fixtures clear up or maybe Podolski if RVP ends up leaving.

If he's just a benchwarmer that's fine but don't expect many points from him.

TOugh one, think U have to decide very late.. Maybe Ba if Newcastle goes back to playing 4-4-2 (which they could with rumors about Cabaye and Barfa not starting the season). Out on the left wing he wont do much.
Gervinho could be a really nice punt imo, again depends on the RvP situation and also if Podolski, Giroud and Walcott get more preseason minutes..

I'm an Arsenal fan and following all of their pre-season. Gervinho looks very lively and is set to actually produce this season. The talk is that a lot of foreign transfers dont deliver in their first season, but he's tipped to get 10-15 goals this season.

HOWEVER - Arsenal's fixtures are not good from the start, coupled with the fact that RVP will go, Sagna injured, Wilshere still out and new players to adapt in the form of Giroud and Podolski leaves me with no Arsenal players in my lineup.

I wish I could have them, and Gervihno would be one of my favourites, but it's just too risky.

      Avoid.

p.s Ba looks like he may be playing on the wing again, though I can't say for sure here - only going on others comments.

What do you guys think of this -

    Krul / Federici
    Hughes / Ivanovic / Lescott / Rangel /Clyne
    Dempsey / VDV /Hazard / Sinclair / Noble
    Aguero / Graham / Petric

I'm having second thoughts on VDV considering his injuries and bringing in Bale.

Well I'd imagine Ivanovic would start

If so should I downgrade Demps or Hazard/ Mata? Just considering if theres more value in investing heavily in the midfield than up front

Olympics have meant that Sinclair hasn't had much time with the new setup (not that it'll change much) and Michu seems like a good gamble in the Siggy role for 0.5 cheaper.

4 main things bugging me with finishing the team:

    1) City defender - Do I play it risky and take a gamble on one of Clichy/Kolarov at 6.0 or find the 6.5 for Lescott and be safe(r)?

    2) Spurs attack - Lennon seems to be getting plenty of time at 7.0 and is always a threat on the right wing, although I think Siggy is more nailed on at 9.0, I could upgrade elsewhere with the money saved.

    3) United cover - I could take a punt on Kagawa but I fear he's not as gelled into the team as everyone things. Valencia looks safer but could play RB. Again after the DGW I'll have 5.5 for a defender and can gamble on Rafael. United havent the best run of games but can see a high percentage of CS. Better options for less cash though ðŸ™

    4) City midfield - Do I go for Yaya or Nasri? This is probably bugging me the most as Yaya is (lets be honest) a beast when going forward. Nasri was good in the Euros and I can see a lot more game time in a forward position. Only 0.5 more than Yaya and on some corners and frees.

      1) Not that much of a risk in comparison to the ones you will do later on in the season Im sure

      2) Different playing positions but Lennon never really has been a first team regular

      3) True that

      4) Either of them will score well which one do you prefer personally?

Personally I prefer Nasri I always seem to take a punt on him at the right times. Like last season I think I had him captained by pure fluke when he got that 17 point haul. Also had him in the Euros. But Yaya is consistent year in year out not to mention cheaper on the budget. Might keep an eye in the Community Shield to see how they fare (i.e formation and how it affects their involvement, game time, stuff like that)

Uhm, I think 1 and 4 comes down to if you think City will play 3-5-2. Kolarov "should" play and be very dangerous. Also I think Yaya will be brilliant in 3-5-2, also considering Silva might miss the first game or two.
Personally I just dont like Lennon, so my input wont do u any good.. imo he just dont deliver the points.
3 is tricky, comes down to United formation imo.. 4-4-2 and he will play deeper along with Carrick, could be the assist-assister (ala Modric) but if he plays higher up he should do much better.. still, unproven.. its a gamble. Dont think Valencia will play RB very much, maybe the odd game.. Fergie loves him and hes an assist machine.

      1. Lescott

      2. Lennon looks good value at 7.0 and if you can't afford Bale, I'd be tempted.

      3. Stick to Rooney for attacking cover, wait and see on defence, depends on injuries.

      4. My preference would be to stick with Aguero or Silva but out of those 2 I'd go Yaya for the guaranteed gametime.
