Fabio Borini nets on his Anfield debut as Liverpool ease past FC Gomel in the Europa League. Joe Allen moves closer to completing his move to Merseyside, Spurs slump to a 2-0 loss at Valencia, Martin O’Neill is sweating on the fitness of Stephane Sessegnon, while Brett Holman is determined to nail down a role in “the hole†at Villa next season:

Liverpool 3 FC Gomel 0
With Joe Allen watching in the stands, Brendan Rodgers rolled out his first-choice backline for Liverpool’s second-leg Europa League qualifier last night. Steven Gerrard was the further forward of the midfield three, while Luis Suarez and Stewart Downing flanked Fabio Borini up front. Borini made an instant impact on his first home start since joining up at Anfield from Roma but it was Suarez who caught the eye; he provided a pair of assists, in addition to having seven efforts over the 90 minutes and, intriguingly, also took a direct free-kick. Gerrard had chances aplenty, too – he grabbed his side’s second and struck the post – while the Liverpool skipper also shared corners with Stewart Downing. Glen Johnson served a reminder of his attacking potential from deep by hammering home the Reds’ third to ensure their progress to the next round.

Post-match, Rodgers admitted he was keen to keep Daniel Agger at the club, despite the attentions of Man City. The Liverpool boss revealed the Dane is crucial to his plans for the campaign ahead, saying:

There’s nothing new to add. He’s very important for me. I like to have a playmaker at the back. With Daniel, this is his game – building from behind, stepping out with the ball and making passes and you see his commitment to the cause. For me there’s no update because we don’t want to sell him. He’s a player who is very important for me and it will remain that way.

Rodgers then went on to concede that Allen is close to sealing a move from Swansea, with the midfielder expected to undergo a medical on Merseyside later today:

It’s obviously imminent. If he is up here, it is a sign there has been good communication with Swansea and hopefully over the next 24 hours we can conclude it.

Liverpool Starting XI: Reina; Johnson, Agger, Skrtel (Carragher 76), Enrique; Lucas (Spearing 86), Shelvey (Adam 76), Gerrard; Downing, Borini, Suarez

Valencia 2 Spurs 0
With the news that Scott Parker has been ruled out of the start of the season after undergoing an Achilles operation, Andre Villas-Boas has real problems in the Spurs double-pivot. Jermaine Jenas and Jake Livermore were handed the deep-lying central midfield roles last night but failed to impress and, with Sandro still on Olympic duty with Brazil, the lack of options is having a knock-on effect on Gylfi Sigurdsson. The Icelandic international lined up in “the hole†behind Jermaine Defoe and was handed corner kick duties but the introduction of Rafael Van der Vaart for Jenas was to Sigurdsson’s detriment, with the latter shifted into a more defensive role as the Dutchman took his place alongside Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon in the attacking midfield three.

Tottenham Starting XI: Friedel; Walker (Naughton 77), Gallas, Vertonghen, Assou-Ekotto; Jenas (Van der Vaart 61), Livermore (Carroll 88); Lennon, Sigurdsson (Kane 81), Bale (Townsend 77); Defoe.

In Other News…
Martin O’Neill revealed he is fretting over the availability of Stephane Sessegnon and Phil Bardsley only eight days before the new season gets underway. The Benin international is of particular concern to the Black Cats boss – he has failed to feature at all in pre-season and his fitness must now surely be a major worry ahead of their trip to Arsenal a week tomorrow. Talking to the local press yesterday, O’Neill went on to say:

Sessegnon pulled out of training the other day and Phil Bardsley has had a bit of a setback with his ankle injury as well. We’ll have to assess those two. They’re going for scans tomorrow morning. Sessegnon’s obviously an important player for us and it’s a concern. But in the overall scheme of things, it might not be such a bad thing. I thought he got tired towards the back end of last season because he had played all the games for us and under a lot of pressure to do well. In the long-term, it might not be so bad but in the short-term, I would obviously like him to have some proper football before the season kicks off.

Brett Holman is keen to win a role in “the hole†for Aston Villa for the season ahead. The summer signing from AZ Alkmaar has mainly been utilised from a wide position over pre-season so far but his versatility earned him plenty of game time in the position with his national side – a factor that he hopes will help him stake a claim on Paul Lambert’s first-team thinking. Holman – who has notched twice in the club’s recent friendlies revealed:

I like to play in behind the strikers and I’m an attacking player. I like to always go forward to create goals, score goals and defensive wise it’s not in my thinking really. When I first moved to Holland it was my aim to move into that role and I sort of moved from left to right. At AZ I played from the left side coming inside and with the Australian national team I play in behind the strikers.

Which do you think will achieve greater points over the course of the season

    A) Rooney + 6m or 6.5 midfielder (Holman, McClean, Larsson, Taarabt)
    B) Suarez + Kagawa/Nani/Valencia

So, Bale is the favourite pick for Spurs coverage, and rightly so. But, with Ade looking unlikely to move, does this not increase the appeal of VDV? Nailed on for pens I'd have thought, and he's too lazy to play the holding role (which Siggy can). Just a thought.

VDV will play in the hole when fit, I'm pretty certain of that.
The key words are 'when fit' though.
When he plays he is a brilliant FPL option, better than Bale, but his hamstrings are ridiculously weak.
He's as good an option as most in the midfield I think though.

He's one of my favourite FPL options though, because of last season.
Had him from the start of his streak early on when nobody had him, then captained him in that massive DGW, so I'll always have a spot for VDV in my team. Him and Mata for silly reasons.

no idea but i'm not convinced. utd have rooney, kagawa, hernandez and wellbeck (plus possibly rvp if they get their wish) to firt into the central attacking spots so his chances to play in the hole appear limited

I'm assuming young, nani and valencia will fight it out on the wings.

if kagawa plays in dentral mf where there's less competition against him (scholes being a back up, giggs benig part time, carrick, anderson and cleverley in competition with him but still you'd back him to start most times)... but then in CM he's not getting in teh box as much as he could and for however much he costs i'd rather wait and see

      Who knows.
I haven't got him, but if you look at his FPL history his time at Villa got some points too, and for a 5.0 mid his assist/goal record elsewhere is decent. But he seems very injury prone.

I'm not much of a fan of any WH defender either but trying to get a 4.0 budget defender that roates well with the rest of my defense, so far i have:

      Hanger / Simpson / Cruellar / Clyne / 4.0

Yes my mid/forward is nailed on set and forget 🙂

Quick question. Is anyone else locked out of the FPL site? I've been trying to log in for two days now and have even tried to get them to send me a new password for the login and nothing has worked. I even went so far as to try and set up a new profile and after it was set up I tried to log in and the password didn't work.

So, is it just me or have other people had problems with the site?

I have problems from time to time.

I suspect that it happens when they publish new js and css files.

These take a very long time to download where I live and the downloads sometimes fail.

      That's my theory anyway.

i keep getting drawn back to having pogrebnyak in my team

if he flops its not a massive concern in that ill get 4pts and then bench gwk2/3 and he only cost 5m

the worry is as he has a high ownership that if he flops i wont be able to get rid until gwk4 (as got to shift my 2 chelsea players first) and his price could plummet by then

    thoughts?

Pog = points pit. Whatever happens you will lose value and as you said your chelsea transfers will take priority. I'm steering clear. Can't see Reading doing much during the double anyway. Fed is a good bet for save points

It's between him and Petric but Graham is proven, so I'll wait on Petric. I like D Cisse as well, but am steering clear of QPR due to terrible post gwk2 fixtures and the need to dump my Chelsea stars.

        To be ignored.

        My 2 cents on this;
        1) Pog is a horrible footballer
        2) Striker spots are too valuable in the first few weeks to gamble with unproven/unreliable strikers.

      I'm a fan of Pog.

The worst team last term (Stoke) scored 36 goals. That's almost a goal a game. Pog will be scoring a fair chunk of Reading's goals this term. As Reading's main striker, he's to Reading this season what Van Persie was to Arsenal last season.

Okay, he's not going to score 30 goals but even if he scores 15, that's still better value than Van Persie last time who was more than double the price that Pog is this term.

At 5.0. he's a great value cheapie, and will allow you to save money to spend on more expensive players like Cazorla or Podolski.

You can always bench him when Reading's fixtures are too onerous.

Double Gameweek or not, is Torres really worth the punt over Rooney?

He's just as likely to be subbed after 60 minutes of doing nothing and then not starting the next and coming on to get booked.

Is his pre-season form any good?

I was thinking , gw two switch gerrard to bale.

I feel defoe will provide a good return this reason.

Just off the top of my head, he played around 900 minutes and scored 11 goals with 4 assists. If he is to be spurs number 9 this season - steal!

I dont think deffenders pay off as much as mid and attack so i think the 5 mark for a respectable deffender from a solid enough team is the par for deffender price.

I understand that Lampard is more nailed on for Chelsea. But he's potentially less explosive andconsidering potential for points, Hazard playing further up should do better right? Im not trying to make a point here, just looking for some discussion. And with Mata potentially rested, that LW/In the hole role looks tailor mde for Eden.
