Shane Long is amongst the goals as West Brom ease past Forest to extend their unbeaten run to five games. Michael Kightly notches for Stoke on his debut as the Potters register their fourth consecutive 1-1 draw, while West Ham produce a similar scoreline at FC Braga thanks to a last-gasp equaliser from Winston Reid:

Nottingham Forest 0 West Brom 2
Steve Clarke welcomed back Chris Brunt and Steven Reid as the Baggies extended their unbeaten run to five matches with a comfortable cruise at the City Ground. Liam Ridgewell is a concern, though, after limping off at half-time with a thigh problem, while Jerome Thomas missed out with a niggle picked up in the previous match. In terms of formation, West Brom rolled out a 4-3-3 with Shane Long flanked by Peter Odemwingie and Zoltan Gera, with James Morrison the most advanced of the central midfielders. Morrison was a threat early on and teed up Youssouf Mulumbu for the opener before Long dusted himself down to slot home a spot-kick after being fouled in the box; the goal, his second of pre-season, the perfect response to the recent arrivals of Markus Rosenberg and Romelu Lukaku as the competition for striking berths heats up.

West Brom Starting XI: Foster; Reid (Jara 69), McAuley (Dawson 62), Olsson (Tamas 62), Ridgewell (Jones 46); Yacob (Hurst 81), Mulumbu (Thorne 81) Morrison (El Ghanassy 66); Odemwingie, Long (Fortune 66), Gera (Brunt 69).

Greuther Furth 1 Stoke 1
Tony Pulis handed new boys Michael Kightly and Geoff Cameron their Stoke debuts against the Bundesliga newcomers last night. Both players showed their versatility in the 1-1 draw; Kightly started on the left wing before switching to the right later on, while Cameron began the game in central midfield but shifted into the heart of defence after the Potters boss made a host of changes. Kightly was the chief protagonist for his new club; the former Wolves man scored with his first touch and teed up Ryan Shotton, only for the latter to hit the post. Asmir Begovic and Thomas Sorensen were handed a half apiece between the posts, while Matthew Upson continued alongside Ryan Shawcross at centre-half due to Robert Huth’s absence. Upson hardly covered himself in glory though; he gave away the spot-kick that led to the home side’s equaliser before making way on the hour mark.

Post-match, Pulis revealed the club are expected to sign Dynamo Kiev left-back Goran Popov on a season-long loan on Monday; a move that will surely place real question marks over the game of Marc Wilson in the Potters’ backline next term. The Stoke boss also gave an update on Robert Huth – the German has returned home after being hospitalised with viral meningitis earlier this week and is expected to return to light training at some point in the next few days:

It’s a massive bonus that he has recovered so well because we were really concerned that it was the serious strain at one point. He’s a bit weak at the moment, so it’s too early to say when he will be back. We’ll have to take it one step at a time, but he’s a tough character and I know he won’t want to miss out on the start of the season if that is at all possible.

Stoke Starting XI: Begovic (Sorensen 46); Wilkinson (Jerome 60), Shawcross, Upson (Palacios 60), Wilson; Pennant, Whelan (Whitehead 46), Cameron, Kightly (Delap 76); Walters (Ness 65), Crouch (Jones 65).

Braga 1 West Ham 1
Sam Allardyce rolled out a 4-3-3 formation last night, with Ricardo Vaz Te and Modibo Maiga swapping wings on either side of Carlton Cole up front. Elsewhere, James Tomkins started in central midfield, with James Collins continuing alongside Winston Reid in the heart of defence. Matt Taylor came on as a sub midway through the second half and was handed a role on the left of the front three, with Maiga moving centrally. Intriguingly, Vaz Te shared direct free-kicks with Noble, while Tomkins grabbed an assist for Reid’s late, late equaliser after nodding down a Taylor corner.

West Ham Starting XI: Jaaskelainen, Demel, Reid, Collins (O’Neil 76), O’Brien, Tomkins, Diame (Moncur 84), Noble, Vaz Te, Maiga, Cole (Taylor 71)

For anyone who's interested, I posted this last night re Fulham news. Aaron Hughes is now an injury doubt:

Here’s the lowdown from that big cuddly, growly bear Martin Jol:

    - The team that plays tomorrow will more or less be the one that plays against Norwich barring any international injuries in midweek
    - Aaron Hughes has an ankle injury. Is apparently a quick healer usually but definitely out of the game tomorrow, big Mart hopes he’ll return to training on Wednesday/Thursday so hopefully will be fit for Norwich we shall see. (if he’s not I’d expect Baird to start, although i hear Reither can play across the back 4 so he’s an outside punt in which case kelly would be RB)
    - Talked up Petric and said he’s even better than he remembers him, also pointed out that he’s retired from internationals so no worries there
    - Hugo has picked up another knock but may play a part tomorrow, either way he isn’t fully fit so Petric sound very nailed on for now
    - Talked up Ruiz but said he won’t be back from international duty until Friday so therefore could be a doubt for GW1
    - No mention of Clint but hasn’t featured in any friendlies so I’m assuming he can’t be match fit, will be very interesting to see if he features tomorrow
    - Got pretty angry about having international friendlies 3 days before the season

Reckon our GW1 line-up will be: Schwarzer; Reither, Brede, Hughes/Baird, Riise; Diarra, Dembele; Duff, Ruiz, Kacaniklic; Petric (assuming Ruiz has recovered and Dempsey doesn’t start tomorrow)

Ok, finally settled on my team, slightly different as I want the big 3 up top and a strong defense -

    Foster / Begovic
    Colo / Baines / Cole / Lescott / Cuellar
    Michu / Brunt / Noble / Gibson / Maloney
    Rooney / Torres / Aguero

Going to play 1 or Cuellar/Colo each week and go 4-3-3

Safe but not spectacular midfield as I have a feeling there will be some serious value in the 4.5 midfielder's this year with Frei and Kacaniklic from Fulham, Marveaux at Newcastle, Puncheon at Southampton and Ahmadi at Villa.

    Thoughts?

Interesting team. Only Ahmadi that I think will develop into value player.

Btw, from my memory, Baines didn't deliver much at the end of last season. Doubt if you could downgrade him and use the fund to get one big hitter in MF.

I would avid Suarez for the first few gameweeks, Liverpool have a nightmare start.

Also I still think Tevez is safer than Aguero, would maybe go for Aguero and a 6/7 mil striker.

I'm liking the idea of a three big-hitter front line.

Rooney and Aguero are no brainers. Rotate captaincy for the season, big scorers, nailed on etc. etc. etc.

But there's a lot of value at the ~8.5 range for strikers that you wouldn't necessarily sub out one of those two for. Jelavic, Tevez (bargain of the season if he plays with any regularity), Pappis Cisse, Podolski, Borini. Some of those will fail, but others won't, and ideally I'd like to be in a place to take advantage of that.

Then there's a ton of value in the midfield to afford something like this. How many comments do we see with something like, "help me pick between Michu/McClean/Piennar/N'Zogbia/Larsson/Taarabt (not to mention Maloney/Noble/Hoilett/Song who should prove to be good value too).

Same story in defense, there's a wealth of 5.0s and 4.5s who should offer good value and no real desperate need to take on any of the 6.5+ players. Yeah, the higher prices get you players from better teams and will end up with more points here but there's a pretty high element of risk that the difference will be _worth_ the 1.5/2.0 extra. It wasn't with last years defensive returns. One of Hangeland/Rangel/Williams/Koscielny/Collocini/Cuellar/Clyne/McCartney could take off this year. Or more.

So yeah, maybe accept a bit of a loss of balance and put money in attack again. It wouldn't be unheard of if the cheapie you pick out of Graham/Pog/Petric just doesn't find the net in the first 8 gameweeks.

(Again, this isn't necessarily what I plan to do - just something to think about)

i agree.. 2 seasons ago and b4 the 6.5+ defenders were almost guaranteed a good bp tally by the end of the season. Not so with the new system. Makes their value a little less imo. However, there are plenty of expensive mids who could be worth it in a couple of weeks. Tottenham, Manu and Chelsea will offer irresistible mids in a matter of weeks. Plus there's Gerrard, Cazorla etc. 3 big mids and 2 big forwards for me

You can still generally afford some big hitter mids even with three high priced forwards.

I have something like this priced up:

        Friedel // 4.0
        Hangeland // Coloccini // Cuellar // Clyne // McCartney
        Bale // Mata //McClean // Noble // Maloney
        Rooney // Aguero // Tevez

That's losing most of the money in defense, but you could swap it round and swap out a 9.5 mid for another one of the (many) 6.5s and achieve a lot more balance.

And considering what I put in my original post - what could I upgrade here with the 3.0 I save from downgrading Tevez to Graham?

I could only meaningfully upgrade 1 defender and 1 midfielder imo. I'd swap out Hangeland or Coloccini for a 6.5 defender, and I'd swap out Noble/Maloney for another 6.5 mid (and have a 6.5 on the bench some weeks as a result). Is that much more appealing?

The extra cash was definitely worth it for the likes of Kompany, Evra, and Verm.

The three bigs up front is alluring, but not for me. Poo rotation defenses and weak MFs suck.

Considerin Degea when benched(if at all) will prob be for an easy home game etc.. is it better to go with a guy who does'nt rotate so well with him (eg. Green over Federici) as apart from him being benched by Fergie we'll never bench him. That way when DDG is benched we'd get a juicy fixture for Green. Just a random thought. Feel free to crucify

dump Valencia to a cheaper mid someone like Michu or McClean and get someone like Friedel for Jussi or Cuellar or Newc/Swan defender for Gunter, 1 reading defender is plenty for DGW.

Then I would look to get Valencia in GW3 when Lampard has a blank.

    Hi please RMT:

    DDG / Fed

    Lescott / Cashley / Cuellar / Demel / Clyne

    Sig / Valencia / Mata / Maloney / Noble

    Graham / Aguero / Tevez

Was hoarding 2.0m in bank but in light of recent opinion that Rooney is now slow and fat and faith that Torres is NOT GOING TO SCORE, have opted to strengthen midfield with utd coverage instead. Have 0.0m in bank, but reckon I've enough pricey players to get on any bandwagons.

          Hello all

I've been following the positional debate for a little bit now, where is best to invest your money, shove it all up front, strengthen your defence or have a solid midfield, or to spread the money and have an even team.

I decided to take last years data to work out actually how many points per minute were the top players in each positional category actually gained

          Strikers

          Aguero 12.2 ppm
          Rooney 12.3 ppm
          Van persie 12.3ppm

          Midfielders

          Dempsey 15.9 ppm
          Bale 16.4 ppm

          Defenders
          Evra 20.3 ppm
          Kompany 19.1 ppm
          Baines 22.1 ppm

          Goalkeepers

          Hart 20.6 ppm
          Vorm 21 ppm

(All data worked out by simple division using calculator (not stolen from FFS)

For new players (been playing for 3 years now, and getting better every year although nowhere near as good as the regular posters on here):

          1. Points Hits are very rarely a good thing, every year I see on this board after 10 gameweeks or so (Wow look at the top player he's hardly made any transfers)

          2. Take the advice on FFS gladly and respectfully but also go with your gut, there is nothing worse than after a gameweek seeing a player do well and you missed out because you didn't go with your gut.

Anyway! Premier League is coming back. YES.
