Shane Long is amongst the goals as West Brom ease past Forest to extend their unbeaten run to five games. Michael Kightly notches for Stoke on his debut as the Potters register their fourth consecutive 1-1 draw, while West Ham produce a similar scoreline at FC Braga thanks to a last-gasp equaliser from Winston Reid:

Nottingham Forest 0 West Brom 2
Steve Clarke welcomed back Chris Brunt and Steven Reid as the Baggies extended their unbeaten run to five matches with a comfortable cruise at the City Ground. Liam Ridgewell is a concern, though, after limping off at half-time with a thigh problem, while Jerome Thomas missed out with a niggle picked up in the previous match. In terms of formation, West Brom rolled out a 4-3-3 with Shane Long flanked by Peter Odemwingie and Zoltan Gera, with James Morrison the most advanced of the central midfielders. Morrison was a threat early on and teed up Youssouf Mulumbu for the opener before Long dusted himself down to slot home a spot-kick after being fouled in the box; the goal, his second of pre-season, the perfect response to the recent arrivals of Markus Rosenberg and Romelu Lukaku as the competition for striking berths heats up.

West Brom Starting XI: Foster; Reid (Jara 69), McAuley (Dawson 62), Olsson (Tamas 62), Ridgewell (Jones 46); Yacob (Hurst 81), Mulumbu (Thorne 81) Morrison (El Ghanassy 66); Odemwingie, Long (Fortune 66), Gera (Brunt 69).

Greuther Furth 1 Stoke 1
Tony Pulis handed new boys Michael Kightly and Geoff Cameron their Stoke debuts against the Bundesliga newcomers last night. Both players showed their versatility in the 1-1 draw; Kightly started on the left wing before switching to the right later on, while Cameron began the game in central midfield but shifted into the heart of defence after the Potters boss made a host of changes. Kightly was the chief protagonist for his new club; the former Wolves man scored with his first touch and teed up Ryan Shotton, only for the latter to hit the post. Asmir Begovic and Thomas Sorensen were handed a half apiece between the posts, while Matthew Upson continued alongside Ryan Shawcross at centre-half due to Robert Huth’s absence. Upson hardly covered himself in glory though; he gave away the spot-kick that led to the home side’s equaliser before making way on the hour mark.

Post-match, Pulis revealed the club are expected to sign Dynamo Kiev left-back Goran Popov on a season-long loan on Monday; a move that will surely place real question marks over the game of Marc Wilson in the Potters’ backline next term. The Stoke boss also gave an update on Robert Huth – the German has returned home after being hospitalised with viral meningitis earlier this week and is expected to return to light training at some point in the next few days:

It’s a massive bonus that he has recovered so well because we were really concerned that it was the serious strain at one point. He’s a bit weak at the moment, so it’s too early to say when he will be back. We’ll have to take it one step at a time, but he’s a tough character and I know he won’t want to miss out on the start of the season if that is at all possible.

Stoke Starting XI: Begovic (Sorensen 46); Wilkinson (Jerome 60), Shawcross, Upson (Palacios 60), Wilson; Pennant, Whelan (Whitehead 46), Cameron, Kightly (Delap 76); Walters (Ness 65), Crouch (Jones 65).

Braga 1 West Ham 1
Sam Allardyce rolled out a 4-3-3 formation last night, with Ricardo Vaz Te and Modibo Maiga swapping wings on either side of Carlton Cole up front. Elsewhere, James Tomkins started in central midfield, with James Collins continuing alongside Winston Reid in the heart of defence. Matt Taylor came on as a sub midway through the second half and was handed a role on the left of the front three, with Maiga moving centrally. Intriguingly, Vaz Te shared direct free-kicks with Noble, while Tomkins grabbed an assist for Reid’s late, late equaliser after nodding down a Taylor corner.

West Ham Starting XI: Jaaskelainen, Demel, Reid, Collins (O’Neil 76), O’Brien, Tomkins, Diame (Moncur 84), Noble, Vaz Te, Maiga, Cole (Taylor 71)

Every FPL year has it's own theme.

2010/11 was the year of the promoted clubs with Adam, Carrol and Odemwingie being indispensable throughout the year and early investment meant the difference.

2011/12 was the year of elite strikers. Building a team around a strong front three and finding budget options that pack a punch at the back to (Vorm, William and Evans) was the basis for th emost successful teams that year.

So what will 2012/13 be? I feel it will be the year of depth. The top squads have plenty of players and champions league football to compete in - large amounts of player rotation is on the horizon.

If you want the best players from Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea you'll pay a 9m+ premium whilst they remain big rotation risks. This means your 12th, 13th and 14th man will become a bigger player than you realise. Packing your team with elite options will eventually cause your team to fall apart when you rely on your Guthries and your Fontes 10+ times a season.

And when they get rotated, you'll be in for a frustrating gameweek.

there were also the years of the holy trinity in midfield - ronaldo, gerrard, lampard. with so many decent players at good prices in midfield this season, i'm thinking this could very well be another midfield year

you have a very good point about the depth of squad and the problems alot of RMTs on this site will suffer from

This may not come across well, but…
Basically, Ramires looks a decent bet for the double by playing 180 mins. BUT long term is he one for my 15? Unconvinced.
What I’m trying to say, has Ramires got enough potential for a bumper score to start without a long term option such as Bale or Pienaar and therefore having to find another transfer or possibly a hit? Also, means I’m restricted to be flexible to jump on the latest bandwagons.

some good info on the last post Timski.

May go Williams to Cameron around GW9. I notice that Wilson seems the only player that's been immune to rotation during pre season. Another Walters?

I don't think so - Walters is TP's love child. If he can't get a place up top, he will get a place in midfield.

Wilson will probably start at left back as Tony will not take too many risks but I expect Popov to get his fair share of game time. I do think Wilson may pop up at centre mid though, he has a decent eye for a pass and Tony trusts him (which counts for - Pennant is clearly our best player but TP doesn't trust him).

Walters is a decent shout still. He ended last season poorly but look at his minutes - most in the league (and he played almost all Europa League and cup games too). He's still on pens as far as i'm aware too - not that we get many!

Fixtures are horrible up to GW9 ish but last season our results were better against the 'bigger' teams anyway. Cameron is worth watching, TP says he has ' a good touch' - though this is perhaps relative - compared to Shawcross /Huth a brick wall has a nice touch.

Main point - I wouldn't touch Wilson now.

Why even bother with the Chelsea midfield minefield? Torres is far and away enough cover for the DGW - will be getting rid after that anyway!

Nailed on options at Spurs (Bale) and City (Yaya, Silva) are far more appealing to me.

A fair bit of tinkering and this has been arrived at.

    Jussi Bego
    Lescott A.Cole Saylor Cuellar Gorkks
    Pienaar Michu Yaya Bale HRK
    Aguero Petric Torres

    2M

Just really wanted my two big hitting Defenders to be Vert + Vida but can't seem to squeeze out 0.5 more from that team and i am pacifying myself saying, even though Lescott is not attractive enough, he will do the business.

        My reasoning is this.

I trust the Newcastle defense way more than the Fulham defense. Also, New rotate very well with Sun.

Lamps - I had Mata in there, but i just want to monitor the situation there before investing in the midfield. Don't rate RDM so waiting.

Graham - I wanted Ful + Swa attacking coverage. Had Graham most of last season. Bored of him. 😀

To be honest im struggling where to find the 0.5 in your team. I dont think Yaya is worth the money so would look at swapping him for Ramires or someone? Who is HRK?

Robson Kanu. Will play for Reading on the wing since Kebe is injured. Earlier had Gibbo + McAnuff + Vida for Lescott + Pienaar + HRK

          It goes something like this.

          I spend 40 million Ballotelli at 21 - 5 year contract.

in 3 years he can be sold for at least circa 40 million.

I buy RvP at 25 million - 3/4 year contract.

In 2/3 years he can be sold for.... circa nothing.

Buying young players for high prices isn't that stupid provided they don't turn out to be useless - see Real Betis - 'Denilson'.

i understand that but rvp is treble the player that balo is and with the money earned by winning ligue1/CL in those 3 years etc its worth taking the punt imo

Well, if we're comparing current performance i'd agree that RvP is a better bet.

Is Balo worse than RvP at 21 though?

Not sure RvP would want to go to PsG anyway. French League still behind Spain, England, Germany, Italy.

You can spend limitless money and not win the CL for years. See Chelsea.
