Shane Long is amongst the goals as West Brom ease past Forest to extend their unbeaten run to five games. Michael Kightly notches for Stoke on his debut as the Potters register their fourth consecutive 1-1 draw, while West Ham produce a similar scoreline at FC Braga thanks to a last-gasp equaliser from Winston Reid:

Nottingham Forest 0 West Brom 2
Steve Clarke welcomed back Chris Brunt and Steven Reid as the Baggies extended their unbeaten run to five matches with a comfortable cruise at the City Ground. Liam Ridgewell is a concern, though, after limping off at half-time with a thigh problem, while Jerome Thomas missed out with a niggle picked up in the previous match. In terms of formation, West Brom rolled out a 4-3-3 with Shane Long flanked by Peter Odemwingie and Zoltan Gera, with James Morrison the most advanced of the central midfielders. Morrison was a threat early on and teed up Youssouf Mulumbu for the opener before Long dusted himself down to slot home a spot-kick after being fouled in the box; the goal, his second of pre-season, the perfect response to the recent arrivals of Markus Rosenberg and Romelu Lukaku as the competition for striking berths heats up.

West Brom Starting XI: Foster; Reid (Jara 69), McAuley (Dawson 62), Olsson (Tamas 62), Ridgewell (Jones 46); Yacob (Hurst 81), Mulumbu (Thorne 81) Morrison (El Ghanassy 66); Odemwingie, Long (Fortune 66), Gera (Brunt 69).

Greuther Furth 1 Stoke 1
Tony Pulis handed new boys Michael Kightly and Geoff Cameron their Stoke debuts against the Bundesliga newcomers last night. Both players showed their versatility in the 1-1 draw; Kightly started on the left wing before switching to the right later on, while Cameron began the game in central midfield but shifted into the heart of defence after the Potters boss made a host of changes. Kightly was the chief protagonist for his new club; the former Wolves man scored with his first touch and teed up Ryan Shotton, only for the latter to hit the post. Asmir Begovic and Thomas Sorensen were handed a half apiece between the posts, while Matthew Upson continued alongside Ryan Shawcross at centre-half due to Robert Huth’s absence. Upson hardly covered himself in glory though; he gave away the spot-kick that led to the home side’s equaliser before making way on the hour mark.

Post-match, Pulis revealed the club are expected to sign Dynamo Kiev left-back Goran Popov on a season-long loan on Monday; a move that will surely place real question marks over the game of Marc Wilson in the Potters’ backline next term. The Stoke boss also gave an update on Robert Huth – the German has returned home after being hospitalised with viral meningitis earlier this week and is expected to return to light training at some point in the next few days:

It’s a massive bonus that he has recovered so well because we were really concerned that it was the serious strain at one point. He’s a bit weak at the moment, so it’s too early to say when he will be back. We’ll have to take it one step at a time, but he’s a tough character and I know he won’t want to miss out on the start of the season if that is at all possible.

Stoke Starting XI: Begovic (Sorensen 46); Wilkinson (Jerome 60), Shawcross, Upson (Palacios 60), Wilson; Pennant, Whelan (Whitehead 46), Cameron, Kightly (Delap 76); Walters (Ness 65), Crouch (Jones 65).

Braga 1 West Ham 1
Sam Allardyce rolled out a 4-3-3 formation last night, with Ricardo Vaz Te and Modibo Maiga swapping wings on either side of Carlton Cole up front. Elsewhere, James Tomkins started in central midfield, with James Collins continuing alongside Winston Reid in the heart of defence. Matt Taylor came on as a sub midway through the second half and was handed a role on the left of the front three, with Maiga moving centrally. Intriguingly, Vaz Te shared direct free-kicks with Noble, while Tomkins grabbed an assist for Reid’s late, late equaliser after nodding down a Taylor corner.

West Ham Starting XI: Jaaskelainen, Demel, Reid, Collins (O’Neil 76), O’Brien, Tomkins, Diame (Moncur 84), Noble, Vaz Te, Maiga, Cole (Taylor 71)

The thing with that jay is that your unlikely to start Cuellar away to arsenal in g/w 1 so you will get to see if he plays before you are likely to put him in your team, I think MON is probably just messing about with alternative options today, I still think Cuellar will play. On the Gorks thing, McDermott was pretty much saying on the reading website that the team that starts today would pretty much be the team that would start against stoke. I don't know how much of that to believe but that was what I read last night but he did go on to say that he was happy to have almost 2 players for each position which hints at rotation.

Mariappa, Cummings and Gunter are all competing for one spot at right back actually. Gorkss, Pearce and Mariappa (and Morrison) all competing for two spots, so I think Gorkss is probably still safer, unless he plays badly.

He's pretty likely to play both, just depends if McAnuff does come back, whether it's HRK or McCleary who gets the nod. I'd have him over Guthrie for the double though, because he has much more potential. Over a season, however, I expect Guthrie will play more.

If Yaya plays some advance role and City do well tomorrow, I might start Gw1 with...

    Aguero + Tevez + Yaya

Also, if Lampard plays advance.. Ivanovic + Lampard + Ramires or Torres will also be in team.

Is it too much from 2 teams?

      I'm starting with Aguero,Tevez,Yaya,Lampard,Cole.
I'm not confident enough in either ramires or torres to stick em in, the only chelsea player id consider for 3rd spot is Hazard as a punt.

not sure what all the love is for Petric here. complete unknown, no PL experience, a few goals in pre season against pub league opposition doesnt mean anything. Boselli, anyone?

also, financially its a huge risk. if a player has a high %age of selection, price drops are quite slow and difficult to achieve (as they need 10% of the selection percentage to transfer out to cause a price drop). when they are not owned by many, they can be rapid.

hence for Pog (18% ownership), you will need 1.8% of managers to ditch him to get a price drop,
for Petric (1.4% ownership), you only require 0.14%.

this is how you get Boselli syndrome, where a striker who flops, loses 0.5m in a few weeks. that cannot happen to Pog, if he fails he will lose 0.1 or 0.2. whatsmore, have a think about who owns Pog - these are fire and forget types whilst the guys who pick Petric (a large portion of this sites userbase) are active managers. IF Petric does not score in the first 2 GWs I guarantee all of you will ditch him and be considering wildcards, ive seen it so many times before, every season in fact.

you will have far more important transfers to make when one or two of the big guns thats wasnt widely picked becomes a sudden "must-have"... e.g. Tevez or Suarez, these things you cannot predict pre-season

by GW2, there will be many disgusted with their teams and either doing drastic transfers or wildcarding. if you wish to avoid this, dont take risky punts on unproven players who are VERY likely to drop in value a lot, and are not a priority part of the team. thats like carrying baggage

I've done mine, he's not bad but there are things that concern me. For example, he was strong at Basel scoring 38 goals in 72 appearances. At Hamburg though he scored 38 too but in 98 appearances. It's possible that as he gets older he's losing the sharpness. Also, he's 31 which would possibly suggest that injuries could be more of an occurrence.

think this is the kind of player you jump on if he shows form in proper games. the take up pre season means that he has to score in the first 1 or 2 matches... or he will drop 0.5, thats not a good risk reward play.

ultimately, for every Zaki or Adam, there are many more Boselli's, and Ebanks-Blakes

just sharing my experience. you see the same things occur every year. when this site consisted of about 50 people, i was very active. dont post a great deal these days.

i have no idea whether Petric or Pog will score more. But i do know that financially Pog can only fall 0.1 whereas Petric can fall 0.5. Its a very risky play.

when picking the starting team you need to go generic and safe, there is no room for risky punts because in the first 4 GWs the transfer market is mental, and you will need to use your transfers wisely, and look to maximise your teams value rather than be forced to shift out deadwood because its plumetting in price. if you have a choice between two players, one has very high ownership the other very little, pick the high one. differentials will not win the season in GW1, put they do have the potential to destroy your team value, and that really will damage your chances.

I like your logic about high transfer volume in the early season and potential price fall/rise, Dr. Rog.

Btw, Pog will have no game on Gw3. It's quite likely that people will dump him after Gw2 and possible force his price to go down at maximum too.
