Shane Long is amongst the goals as West Brom ease past Forest to extend their unbeaten run to five games. Michael Kightly notches for Stoke on his debut as the Potters register their fourth consecutive 1-1 draw, while West Ham produce a similar scoreline at FC Braga thanks to a last-gasp equaliser from Winston Reid:

Nottingham Forest 0 West Brom 2
Steve Clarke welcomed back Chris Brunt and Steven Reid as the Baggies extended their unbeaten run to five matches with a comfortable cruise at the City Ground. Liam Ridgewell is a concern, though, after limping off at half-time with a thigh problem, while Jerome Thomas missed out with a niggle picked up in the previous match. In terms of formation, West Brom rolled out a 4-3-3 with Shane Long flanked by Peter Odemwingie and Zoltan Gera, with James Morrison the most advanced of the central midfielders. Morrison was a threat early on and teed up Youssouf Mulumbu for the opener before Long dusted himself down to slot home a spot-kick after being fouled in the box; the goal, his second of pre-season, the perfect response to the recent arrivals of Markus Rosenberg and Romelu Lukaku as the competition for striking berths heats up.

West Brom Starting XI: Foster; Reid (Jara 69), McAuley (Dawson 62), Olsson (Tamas 62), Ridgewell (Jones 46); Yacob (Hurst 81), Mulumbu (Thorne 81) Morrison (El Ghanassy 66); Odemwingie, Long (Fortune 66), Gera (Brunt 69).

Greuther Furth 1 Stoke 1
Tony Pulis handed new boys Michael Kightly and Geoff Cameron their Stoke debuts against the Bundesliga newcomers last night. Both players showed their versatility in the 1-1 draw; Kightly started on the left wing before switching to the right later on, while Cameron began the game in central midfield but shifted into the heart of defence after the Potters boss made a host of changes. Kightly was the chief protagonist for his new club; the former Wolves man scored with his first touch and teed up Ryan Shotton, only for the latter to hit the post. Asmir Begovic and Thomas Sorensen were handed a half apiece between the posts, while Matthew Upson continued alongside Ryan Shawcross at centre-half due to Robert Huth’s absence. Upson hardly covered himself in glory though; he gave away the spot-kick that led to the home side’s equaliser before making way on the hour mark.

Post-match, Pulis revealed the club are expected to sign Dynamo Kiev left-back Goran Popov on a season-long loan on Monday; a move that will surely place real question marks over the game of Marc Wilson in the Potters’ backline next term. The Stoke boss also gave an update on Robert Huth – the German has returned home after being hospitalised with viral meningitis earlier this week and is expected to return to light training at some point in the next few days:

It’s a massive bonus that he has recovered so well because we were really concerned that it was the serious strain at one point. He’s a bit weak at the moment, so it’s too early to say when he will be back. We’ll have to take it one step at a time, but he’s a tough character and I know he won’t want to miss out on the start of the season if that is at all possible.

Stoke Starting XI: Begovic (Sorensen 46); Wilkinson (Jerome 60), Shawcross, Upson (Palacios 60), Wilson; Pennant, Whelan (Whitehead 46), Cameron, Kightly (Delap 76); Walters (Ness 65), Crouch (Jones 65).

Braga 1 West Ham 1
Sam Allardyce rolled out a 4-3-3 formation last night, with Ricardo Vaz Te and Modibo Maiga swapping wings on either side of Carlton Cole up front. Elsewhere, James Tomkins started in central midfield, with James Collins continuing alongside Winston Reid in the heart of defence. Matt Taylor came on as a sub midway through the second half and was handed a role on the left of the front three, with Maiga moving centrally. Intriguingly, Vaz Te shared direct free-kicks with Noble, while Tomkins grabbed an assist for Reid’s late, late equaliser after nodding down a Taylor corner.

West Ham Starting XI: Jaaskelainen, Demel, Reid, Collins (O’Neil 76), O’Brien, Tomkins, Diame (Moncur 84), Noble, Vaz Te, Maiga, Cole (Taylor 71)

In my opinion he should get a minimum of 8 weeks considering the Luis Suarez case has set a precedent and the racist comment was more clearer and evident in the Terry Case than Suarez for two reasons.
      1. The comment was made in English eliminating the possible misinterpretation of his comment.
      2. There were witnesses of what Terry said.

The level of proof required in a court of law is a lot higher than in an FA investigation. In a court of law you have to prove intent, whereas in an FA investigation you don't. He admitted to saying it in court so he definitely should get banned.

yes but the FA is not a criminal court - the FA charge is the equivalent of a civil case, where the burden of proof is on the balance of probablilites (your word against mine) rather than beyond a reasonable doubt

    Hiya,

First RMT of the season - what do you think?

    Begovic, Green
    Hangeland, Ivanovic, Gunter, Clark, Cuellar
    Hazard, Valencia, VDV, Ireland, Downing
    Poggy, Torres, Aguero

Actually still have .5 in the bank - any upgrades?

Is Clark a better bet than Lowton?

Stats don't back this claim up.

Stats say he was in the top 15 creative players yet his centre forwards failed to convert his chances.

If anything, this highlights that Carroll and Suarez underperformed.

He could be a cracking pick at 6.5 if Liverpool score more goals under Rodgers.

        Initial fixtures horrible though.

But to get rid you will need to make two transfers as nobody else is viable at 5.0.

This is essentially costing you 4 points (a goal) - how many is he going to score in this DGW?

Free transfers are only free if you don't need to do anything else.

If any of those Ivanovic/Begovic/VdV risks don't play out you might need those free transfers double quick.

Ok, i just call it how i see it - i defended Downing above despite general condemnation (genuinely do think he's underpriced).

Agree on Ivanovic risk being low at the minute, just giving worse case scenario that you may need transfers elsewhere and are stuck with Pog or a points hit which wipe out any DGW value.

For me, Chelsea players are worth a DGW risk as they could score 10 points+ and can be switched to ManC, ManU, Arsenal,Spurs players in one swoop - i don't see this from Reading.

                  All opinions though!

      Hi man.

I don't really know enough about the defensive fixtures yet so I'll ignore that part and assume it's fine.

Looking at your midfield and attack I think you have some risks in there. Valencia should be reasonably good even if he plays right back, but know that there might be a risk of him being there for a couple of games. VDV is a bit of a risk too for me, I'd probably splash those 0.5m out on getting Bale for him. Like it other than that, hope Downing works for you. I'll hop on if he looks good initially.

I like VDV as an option I think, but I don't really know is he's at risk for being played a bit deeper, or how that will work out. I'd probably buy him too if he looked to hold down a #10 role (or similar) this season too, but perhaps AVB will want to have Siggy there?

Spurs are difficult for me to figure out right now, but if they don't sign any striker I'm looking at Defoe at 7.5 as a possible option

I also had Friedel however I made a post earlier about Tottenham's defensive liablility this season for a few reasons:
      - Injuries to Sandro and Parker weaken the protection of the back 4 leadings to more goals conceded and less cs
      - Poor defensive form in pre-season fixtures
      - AVB likes to play high line leaving defence exposed which was evident when he was at Chelsea.

Not changed my team in a few days so I figured I'd do a RMT:

    De Gea Federici
    Ivanovic Saylor Cuellar Hughes Fonte
    Hazard* Nasri Pienaar McClean Guthrie

    *could be Mata

It's a punt I've been considering for a while. Don't really like Yaya Toure as a fantasy prospect and I feel he does better near the end of the season rather than the start.

I'd say you might need a 4.5 GK instead with De Gea subject to rotation every now and then. Also I would probably do Maloney -> Guthrie and Pienaar -> McClean (benched 1st game) and then play him for almost all subsequent fixtures.

Problem with A is that you will be forced to play Noble every week after GW1 because Guthrie isn't very good. I'd downgrade Noble to a 4.5 (Guthrie) and then go Pienaar + another 6.5 (McClean, Larsson, N'Zogbia, etc) and you can play those every 2 every week.

It looks the part. I like having a budget striker though. Makes the squad stronger throughout and there is likely to always be a big hitter who is misfiring while there are plenty good options this season for £6 > £6.5m

Very true, this was more a case of deciding to try a completely different team out. Can't say I plan on sticking to it though.

Think Cisse could be in for a monster season. Will wait a few weeks as he's had Ramadan so will possibly be low on energy at the start of the season.

That's a very real possibility, 2.5 is a huge difference when Tevez could score very close to Aguero.

          um,
          not really
but for the first week or so he looks "Likely"
and is probably the 1st choice partner for Augero
so i think he'll play the first two GWs without to much of worry and if he comes out and keeps scoring, i am sure not even Roberto will bench him

Suppose the issue is with Mancs thinking. He could be keeping Aguero and Tevez for mostly prem games with Dzeko and Balo for the CL games.

I cant wait for the season to kick off so i can stop tinkering with my squad. This is how it looks at the moment. Feel free to give me advise on how to improve this lot.

    Green, jussi

    Verm, Cole, Cuellar, Tierney, Clyne

    Hazard, Siggy, Pienaar, Taarabt, Kacaniklic

    Aguero, Torres(2m), Graham

Two opening home games Sun/S'ton offer good clean sheet - and he can score in any match.

Baines at 7.0 for me but can see the appeal of Verm.

Everyone worried about FPL site crashing again on the eve of the season?

Mark and the team - might it be worth a reminder to everyone to get a squad/ GW1 team you are happy with by, say, Thursday night?

yeah but he's the TomKat 😀
but seriously just assesing my options i currently have Cuellar,
+ this might make it easier to pick a 4M west Ham DEF
i currently chose Fonte from South Hampton

Don't think that's a long term solution with both Diame and Alou Diarra signed this season. They should form the West Ham central pairing, making Mark Noble a bit of a possible risk. Or?

    Friedel | Federici
    Terry | Lescott | Cueller | Demel | Fonte
    Hazard | Ramires | 6.5 | Michu | Frei
    Aguero | Rooney | Petric

    Hazard > Bale after GW1
    Terry > Vidic GW2

Was going to have Vidic from the start and have Torres & Kagawa to change to Rooney & 6.5 after GW2 but looking at preseason neither have had many minutes so figure may as well start with Rooney and a 6.5.

    Any thoughts?
