Now a stone lighter after shedding his golf course weight, Carlos Tevez has once again emerged as a key player for Manchester City and Fantasy managers alike. The Argentine, who spent much of last season in exile after a spat with manager Roberto Mancini, was the star of last Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Chelsea, scoring a superb effort and overshadowing his compatriot, Sergio Aguero. But can he continue that form and keep the more expensive Aguero out of our Fantasy lineups?

One of the biggest attractions is the price difference between the pair, particularly in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, where Aguero has been priced at 11.5m in compared to Tevez’s 9m price tag. However, the difference in the Sky game is less marked with Tevez priced at 9.4m compared to Aguero’s 9.9m.

Another attraction is the post Community Shield comments from Roberto Mancini about Tevez being “a very important player” for City. With the side’s penalty taking, maverick striker Mario Balotelli still lacking match fitness and Edin Dzeko still out of favour as a starting striker, starts seem assured for Tevez for Man City’s opening games at least. But with Balotelli likely to be used sparingly during August, Aguero is set to retain penalty taking duties, arguably adding further weight to his hefty price tag.

Mark says…
I’ve been hesitant to consider Tevez over Aguero, for the simple reason that it seems inevitable that Roberto Mancini will look to give Mario Balotelli pitch time. My other concern is Mancini’s formation. The 3-4-1-2 looks to be a winning formula right now but the City boss is already indicating that he’ll abandon it once the real business gets underway. Even if it remains, I’m not sure how he builds both David Silva and Samir Nasri into his lineup, whilst keeping two strikers. I’m pretty sure they’ll be times when he’ll push Silva or Toure forward and abandon the idea of a pairing up front. For me, Aguero looks the most secure, regardless of the tactical scenario.

In the short-term, however, I have to admit I’m enormously tempted by the slimline Tevez. His goal and performance on Sunday was a clear indication of form and confidence and it seems nailed on that he’ll line up against Southampton. There’s every chance he could again steal the thunder from Aguero in that game and that 2.5 FPL difference can be invested to some effect elsewhere in our lineups. Will I be 100% that Tevez will take the field in a few Gameweek’s time? That’s the issue. For me, Aguero is a fire and forget option, by going with Tevez, it’s a question of cashing in on the short-term benefits and managing your way out of the situation later. After Sunday’s showing and the noise from the City camp, I might just be willing to take that on.

Andy says…
When I look at comparing two figures like Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero there is one thing that is always at the forefront of my mind – the Fantasy captaincy. The armband is the biggest duty for Fantasy Managers on any given Gameweek and, if I think I’m going to be spreading it about the Etihad stadium with regularity, I’ll make sure to pick the player that I think is not only most consistent and most likely to start games. That man, for me, without a shadow of a doubt, is Sergio Aguero.

However, in the first couple of months of the new season I really don’t see too many of Roberto Mancini’s men pushing the issue when it comes to captaincy. Given that inference I have to hark to the other dominant factor: price. While I think Aguero is more assured of pitch time, it doesn’t even begin to make up for the extra 2.5 in your pocket by opting for Tevez. As a player I prefer Aguero – exponentially so – but for the first couple of months of the season I’ll be managing with my head and leaving my heart at the door. Tevez will be in my team.

Paul Says…
It’s impossible to say over the long-term but, right now, he certainly looks to be. Tevez’s attitude has been praised by both Roberto Mancini and David Platt and the City boss has already stated he expects him to be an important player in the season to come – a sure sign of how he plans to utilise him. Aguero’s phenomenal debut season was, in part, helped by a number of factors –Tevez’s determination to force a move away from the Etihad and subsequent strop in the Allianz Arena, Mario Balotelli’s indiscipline and Edin Dzeko’s loss of form all meant that last year’s summer signing was too crucial to be left out at any point. Now that Tevez is 100% both physically and mentally, Mancini may well feel he can afford to slightly restrict Aguero’s game time when Mario Balotelli is fully-fit.

Personally, I feel that Tevez and Aguero could be handed roughly the same number of starts, with one or the other dropping out for Balotelli on occasion, while Edin Dzeko is mostly reduced to the role of impact sub. Bearing in mind this was a player who was priced at 12.0 at the start of last season, I reckon Tevez looks exceptional value at the moment for 9.0 and that 2.5 saving over Aguero has certainly won me over for just now.

I'm in the same boat as everyone else, Aguero > Tevez yes or no.

If I do, I would spend the money upgrading my keepers (Jass & Beg > Freidel & Federici) and upgrade Williams to Zabaleta.

    Worth it?

He's not worth £12m now with Aguero in the team but he's still excellent VFM at £9m. I reckon his true worth is around £10.5m+ which makes him an absolute must have to start the season off with.

Gents, bit of help in some pressing matters..

    a. Pog, Graham or Petric?

Bit of a common questions but a valid one. Given the importance of the third striker spot. Here are some points of arguement.

    - Pog is cheap, relatively premier league proven (kinda) and cheap! But he is with Reading (DGW!).. Lets me spend the 1.0m elsewhere.
    - Graham has had a pretty good preseason. Swanseas fixtures are really good! He would be my only Swansea coverage (and an attacker at that!).
    - Petric has also been pretty sharp preseason. With Dempsey out he also looks like a good bet.

    b. Hangeland/Clyne or Hughes/Fabio

    - For that extra 0.5m I get Fabio which could be playing OOP. Real question should be is Hangeland worth the extra 0.5m over Hughes given they are in the same team?! (Clyne is also pretty attacking..)

    Cheers Fellas!

Hange and clyne easily. Hange will surely not go much longer without scoring having been so prolific the previous season plus he is nailed on and Hughes isn't imo. Clyne like u say very attacking too. Plus doubt Fabio will be oop and they have a pretty tough start.

For me its graham, swans look to have goals in them and a fairly easy start on paper plus u know he us their main man. Petric could come under threat from rodellega etc. Pog is just a no no for me, le fondre would be a better option than him but I just wouldn't go there, if u want a punt on a royal for dgw look in mid, robsonk over Guthrie for me.

I've gone for Graham. Great threat in pre-season and seems to be main man at swansea for sure.
Fixtures are there to do great.

Pog's scored in bunches, but large chunks of nothing. Think it'll only be harder at reading. While DGW is good, it leaves you with blank on GW3.

Petric... wait and see on him.

Hangaland is worth the extra .5 i believe cos he's much more of an attacking threat.
Fabio over Clyne defo just on Southamptons opening fixtures alone!

So toss a coin between Fabio and Hangeland... i've gone Hangeland.

Do Siggy to Bale for sure. The Siggy/VDV debate will wind us all up for a while I predict. Which is alright when messing about with 5.0-5.5ers, but at 9.0 you don't want that itchy feeling at 2:30pm on a Saturday when your man is benched! Bale is nailed on and worth the 0.5 at the moment.

Sorry about the long post; hope it’s worth it.

Has anyone ever thought about the different kinds of pathological folly that prevent us from doing well at fantasy football? You know, the things we do emotionally or because of our personalities that stop us from being purely analytical about it. Easy examples are knee-jerking and bandwagon jumping. But I think it would be interesting to list the more complex ones. These are the ones I have come up with, but I bet others wiser than I can come up with more:

The Anti-Social Folly (I do this one): can’t bear to do what everyone else is doing—it makes you feel like a sheep, and you think it must be wrong if everyone is falling into lock-step.

The Beautiful Idea Folly: you’ve come up with a brilliant 6-player mid/def rotation (or a series of transfers over the first few GW) that you think is so pretty you just can’t let go. You build your team around it and will move everything but that bit.

The Grizzled Veteran Folly: you have one or two top-10,000 seasons under your belt, and you have learned your lessons. Forgetting how much luck is involved, your self-made rules have become dogma. You now KNOW that Everton starts poorly, and you MUST have attacking coverage for MUN.

The Keeping Up With The Joneses Folly (I do this one too): you’ve been burned before by not having the guy everyone else has and captains, and you are now determined to have Rooney/Aguero/??? because 32% will have him and reap his spoils, even if you think another player will score better.

Have I missed any (and I don’t mean the Thinking People Are Interested In Your Stupid Thoughts Folly, I already thought of that one)?

I agree with this folly, I often do it myself during the season. But as for the Rooney-Aguero saga I want both because they're probably the most reliable source of points on the two best teams in the PL that score a hell of a lot of goals. Too many differentials spoil the broth, having said that though, Tevez could be the exception.

The I Can't Get Him Because Even I Don't Know a Thing About Him: A player comes along that you've never heard of before, but going by stats and common knowledge seems a good pick. But then if I've never even heard of him how am I gonna explain having this joker in my team to my mini league rivals who then go and claim I just copy off this site, put too much effort in and only win cos I try too hard etc.

      See Michu, Kacankiklic etc.

Ag and Tev. The understanding and partnership tips the balance for me.

Last I checked, ManU and Arsenal players aren't best mates. I can see RVP doing a 'Torres' if he goes to Old Trafford, no-one will like him and he'll be unhappy very quickly. I may be wrong of course and Rooney/RVP becomes lethal!!

If you're going hart don't have fed. it's a waste of 0.5. Hart has a great opening fixture also, so it makes no sense as the DGW isn't even useful...plus you have Harte. Dempsey won't start, and neither will cole.

Hart scares me, but I guess with all that money invested in him if another GK starts doing really well you can swap them no problem. Allen is a good player, but I definately wouldn't have him in your team within the first six gameweeks, Liv's fixtures aren't very good. Dempsey and Jones won't start, but that has already been said. Fabio has a few tough games at QPR (Gameweeks 3 4 5) but otherwise he is a good choice. Also I might try someone like McCartney rather than Barnett, McCartney has better fixtures and Norwich really never do well defensively. Those are my thoughts, but it looks like you have a good team so far.

    What is better?

    A. Clyne, Nasri, Noble. - Extra City attacker for Southampton, easy swap to Kagawa if it looks like he's nailed on.

    B. S.Taylor, Michu, Nolan. - Taylor to rotate with Cueller, 2 mids playing behind the striker but not so easy to swap for a big hitter.

downgrade rafeal and probably kos (though keep kos if you plan on playing 4 at the back most weeks). get cueller (and fabio if downgrading kos) then upgrade pog and 1 or 2 mf
