Now a stone lighter after shedding his golf course weight, Carlos Tevez has once again emerged as a key player for Manchester City and Fantasy managers alike. The Argentine, who spent much of last season in exile after a spat with manager Roberto Mancini, was the star of last Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Chelsea, scoring a superb effort and overshadowing his compatriot, Sergio Aguero. But can he continue that form and keep the more expensive Aguero out of our Fantasy lineups?

One of the biggest attractions is the price difference between the pair, particularly in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, where Aguero has been priced at 11.5m in compared to Tevez’s 9m price tag. However, the difference in the Sky game is less marked with Tevez priced at 9.4m compared to Aguero’s 9.9m.

Another attraction is the post Community Shield comments from Roberto Mancini about Tevez being “a very important player” for City. With the side’s penalty taking, maverick striker Mario Balotelli still lacking match fitness and Edin Dzeko still out of favour as a starting striker, starts seem assured for Tevez for Man City’s opening games at least. But with Balotelli likely to be used sparingly during August, Aguero is set to retain penalty taking duties, arguably adding further weight to his hefty price tag.

Mark says…
I’ve been hesitant to consider Tevez over Aguero, for the simple reason that it seems inevitable that Roberto Mancini will look to give Mario Balotelli pitch time. My other concern is Mancini’s formation. The 3-4-1-2 looks to be a winning formula right now but the City boss is already indicating that he’ll abandon it once the real business gets underway. Even if it remains, I’m not sure how he builds both David Silva and Samir Nasri into his lineup, whilst keeping two strikers. I’m pretty sure they’ll be times when he’ll push Silva or Toure forward and abandon the idea of a pairing up front. For me, Aguero looks the most secure, regardless of the tactical scenario.

In the short-term, however, I have to admit I’m enormously tempted by the slimline Tevez. His goal and performance on Sunday was a clear indication of form and confidence and it seems nailed on that he’ll line up against Southampton. There’s every chance he could again steal the thunder from Aguero in that game and that 2.5 FPL difference can be invested to some effect elsewhere in our lineups. Will I be 100% that Tevez will take the field in a few Gameweek’s time? That’s the issue. For me, Aguero is a fire and forget option, by going with Tevez, it’s a question of cashing in on the short-term benefits and managing your way out of the situation later. After Sunday’s showing and the noise from the City camp, I might just be willing to take that on.

Andy says…
When I look at comparing two figures like Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero there is one thing that is always at the forefront of my mind – the Fantasy captaincy. The armband is the biggest duty for Fantasy Managers on any given Gameweek and, if I think I’m going to be spreading it about the Etihad stadium with regularity, I’ll make sure to pick the player that I think is not only most consistent and most likely to start games. That man, for me, without a shadow of a doubt, is Sergio Aguero.

However, in the first couple of months of the new season I really don’t see too many of Roberto Mancini’s men pushing the issue when it comes to captaincy. Given that inference I have to hark to the other dominant factor: price. While I think Aguero is more assured of pitch time, it doesn’t even begin to make up for the extra 2.5 in your pocket by opting for Tevez. As a player I prefer Aguero – exponentially so – but for the first couple of months of the season I’ll be managing with my head and leaving my heart at the door. Tevez will be in my team.

Paul Says…
It’s impossible to say over the long-term but, right now, he certainly looks to be. Tevez’s attitude has been praised by both Roberto Mancini and David Platt and the City boss has already stated he expects him to be an important player in the season to come – a sure sign of how he plans to utilise him. Aguero’s phenomenal debut season was, in part, helped by a number of factors –Tevez’s determination to force a move away from the Etihad and subsequent strop in the Allianz Arena, Mario Balotelli’s indiscipline and Edin Dzeko’s loss of form all meant that last year’s summer signing was too crucial to be left out at any point. Now that Tevez is 100% both physically and mentally, Mancini may well feel he can afford to slightly restrict Aguero’s game time when Mario Balotelli is fully-fit.

Personally, I feel that Tevez and Aguero could be handed roughly the same number of starts, with one or the other dropping out for Balotelli on occasion, while Edin Dzeko is mostly reduced to the role of impact sub. Bearing in mind this was a player who was priced at 12.0 at the start of last season, I reckon Tevez looks exceptional value at the moment for 9.0 and that 2.5 saving over Aguero has certainly won me over for just now.

        Didn't know about Man United.

He's a class player. His dribbling is probably only second to Messi when he's in form. A decent tackler and passer too.

He is just awful at finishing/shooting from anywhere on the pitch.

Ummm ... RVP is class. Rooney shoulders virtually all the goal burden right now. If needed, Rooney can be one of the best CAMs in the PL, if not the world.

I agree that we have other issues ... but a chance like this shouldn't be ignored. Also, one last point: if we have him, City don't. 😀

he could also be one of the best deep-lying playmakers, as proven last season after the city drubbing. his first touch, technique, composure, movement and, yes, positional discipline (despite some claims to the contrary from anti-utd people) are mindboggling. it'd be a waste of his attacking prowess to slot him in there on a regular basis, but as a utd fan i feel like central midfield is our weakest position right now and if we got RVP to lead the line, it may be a great option every so often.

    Federici (Friedel)
    ZABALETA – Hangeland – A Cole (Tierny – Clyne)
Bale – YAYA – RAMIRES – Noble (Dyer)
    Aguero – Torres – Graham

+ ofcourse the popular 2mil for Torres > Shrek

My main problem is if i should have Zabaleta or Lescot for Def

My plan B would be Zaba > Lescot , Yaya > Kagawa
and then go for 2 transfers in gw2 (Ramires > Pienaar and Torres > Rooney)

I think Lescot is a wiser choice for the long term but while Richards is injured Zaba will do

Don't do this to me again.

        Would you captain Aguero?

Week 1 - City (SOU). But Chelsea have have (wig, REA).
Week 2 - City (liv). Manchester United have (FUL).
Week 3 - City (QPR). Tottenham have (NOR), Manchester United (sou).
Week 4 - City (sto). Manchester United have (WIG).
Week 5 - City (ARS). Tottenham have (QPR). (United have (liv)).
Week 6 - City (ful). Also Arsenal vs Chelsea, Manchester United vs Tottenham.
Week 7 - City (SUN). Chelsea (NOR) and Tottenham (AVL).
Week 8 - City (wba). Manchester United (STO).

In each of those weeks there's a case for captaining a City player (which could be Tevez if he has the form), but there's a good case against it too. The toughest to avoid City that I can see is GW6, but the ties between the big sides resulted in a lot of goals last year so maybe not even then.

After GW8 the schedule opens up and you can begin the City/United Home/Away captaincy rotation a bit better, but for the first 8 GWs you *could* take a risk...

Yeah if your happy with other captain options in your team I'd go for Tevez. But I don't think i'd be confident captaining him, not yet anyway.

            1 and 3 are tossups, I think.

1 - I don't see Torres missing a game. If he does start both and still fails to score/assist/get any bps against Wigan and Reading Aguero has to get (AT LEAST) an assist to outscore him.

3 - United are away, but it IS Southampton. Did Norwich keep a CS last year away from home?

I think GW6 is the strongest possibility for captaincy. But by then we'll all know more about Tevez (and may have shipped him out for Aguero already, if that's how it goes)

Either 13 or Arsenal manage to send off Park before the close of the transfer window and then hand Podolski the number 9.

He was number 9 on sunday & Cazorla was 30 if thats anything to go by!

I don't think they would be too fussed with stripping Park of the 9 jersey. He will of course be no.10 though if/when RVP goes

Thanks Mr Viper I'm playing a bunch of games this season, the telegraph are virtually giving him away at 3.2mil, I'm a bit put off by the 9 mil valuation in the other games though, but worth a punt on the tele team.....

Yep, I have Bent at the moment. Reckon he'll notch some in with Lambert's attacking style of football. Graham offers a cheaper alternative and looks set to be in good form this coming season but I already have Michu but he'll still be under my watchlist.

For what its worth, it's nice to see a different squad. Sure your MF is bit weak but thats the cost of a dangerous frontline.

-If Podolski is on pens I really like the selection.
-What about Hart over De Gea and STaylor for someone cheaper who will start?

I think Podolski will be on penaltys which is what sealed his selection.

7.0 is just a little bit too much for a keeper. I'm including S.Taylor because his threat from set-pieces, he will knick a goal or 2 plus Newcastle were pretty solid last season to boot.

Podolski -> Graham/Petric & Michu -> 9.0m mid (possibly Walcott) is certainly on the cards..

Good punt on Podolski but I'd suggest downgrade it to either Graham or Petric and upgrade your midfield a little. Unless you opt for an all-out elite forwards and non-budget, then it's alright, I guess.

Does anyone else find the relationship between Mannioni85 and Boomboomshacktheroom really sweet? It's all fluffy and wholesome. I watched it blossom over the course of last season. The well thought out, polite responses to each other are endearing. Even when one leaves the room, the other waits diligently, even if it takes hours.
A summer apart has not seemed to thwart this FFS love story. They are re-united now...holding hands as they stroll blissfully into another double gameweek.

Bent easy, can't believe he only has 2.5% ownership, easily a 20 goal man in the right set-up and with Lambert at the helm can only see good things for him.

Can see his ownership rocketing come GW5/6 as Villa have a great set of fixtures first 10 weeks.
