Now a stone lighter after shedding his golf course weight, Carlos Tevez has once again emerged as a key player for Manchester City and Fantasy managers alike. The Argentine, who spent much of last season in exile after a spat with manager Roberto Mancini, was the star of last Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Chelsea, scoring a superb effort and overshadowing his compatriot, Sergio Aguero. But can he continue that form and keep the more expensive Aguero out of our Fantasy lineups?

One of the biggest attractions is the price difference between the pair, particularly in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, where Aguero has been priced at 11.5m in compared to Tevez’s 9m price tag. However, the difference in the Sky game is less marked with Tevez priced at 9.4m compared to Aguero’s 9.9m.

Another attraction is the post Community Shield comments from Roberto Mancini about Tevez being “a very important player” for City. With the side’s penalty taking, maverick striker Mario Balotelli still lacking match fitness and Edin Dzeko still out of favour as a starting striker, starts seem assured for Tevez for Man City’s opening games at least. But with Balotelli likely to be used sparingly during August, Aguero is set to retain penalty taking duties, arguably adding further weight to his hefty price tag.

Mark says…
I’ve been hesitant to consider Tevez over Aguero, for the simple reason that it seems inevitable that Roberto Mancini will look to give Mario Balotelli pitch time. My other concern is Mancini’s formation. The 3-4-1-2 looks to be a winning formula right now but the City boss is already indicating that he’ll abandon it once the real business gets underway. Even if it remains, I’m not sure how he builds both David Silva and Samir Nasri into his lineup, whilst keeping two strikers. I’m pretty sure they’ll be times when he’ll push Silva or Toure forward and abandon the idea of a pairing up front. For me, Aguero looks the most secure, regardless of the tactical scenario.

In the short-term, however, I have to admit I’m enormously tempted by the slimline Tevez. His goal and performance on Sunday was a clear indication of form and confidence and it seems nailed on that he’ll line up against Southampton. There’s every chance he could again steal the thunder from Aguero in that game and that 2.5 FPL difference can be invested to some effect elsewhere in our lineups. Will I be 100% that Tevez will take the field in a few Gameweek’s time? That’s the issue. For me, Aguero is a fire and forget option, by going with Tevez, it’s a question of cashing in on the short-term benefits and managing your way out of the situation later. After Sunday’s showing and the noise from the City camp, I might just be willing to take that on.

Andy says…
When I look at comparing two figures like Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero there is one thing that is always at the forefront of my mind – the Fantasy captaincy. The armband is the biggest duty for Fantasy Managers on any given Gameweek and, if I think I’m going to be spreading it about the Etihad stadium with regularity, I’ll make sure to pick the player that I think is not only most consistent and most likely to start games. That man, for me, without a shadow of a doubt, is Sergio Aguero.

However, in the first couple of months of the new season I really don’t see too many of Roberto Mancini’s men pushing the issue when it comes to captaincy. Given that inference I have to hark to the other dominant factor: price. While I think Aguero is more assured of pitch time, it doesn’t even begin to make up for the extra 2.5 in your pocket by opting for Tevez. As a player I prefer Aguero – exponentially so – but for the first couple of months of the season I’ll be managing with my head and leaving my heart at the door. Tevez will be in my team.

Paul Says…
It’s impossible to say over the long-term but, right now, he certainly looks to be. Tevez’s attitude has been praised by both Roberto Mancini and David Platt and the City boss has already stated he expects him to be an important player in the season to come – a sure sign of how he plans to utilise him. Aguero’s phenomenal debut season was, in part, helped by a number of factors –Tevez’s determination to force a move away from the Etihad and subsequent strop in the Allianz Arena, Mario Balotelli’s indiscipline and Edin Dzeko’s loss of form all meant that last year’s summer signing was too crucial to be left out at any point. Now that Tevez is 100% both physically and mentally, Mancini may well feel he can afford to slightly restrict Aguero’s game time when Mario Balotelli is fully-fit.

Personally, I feel that Tevez and Aguero could be handed roughly the same number of starts, with one or the other dropping out for Balotelli on occasion, while Edin Dzeko is mostly reduced to the role of impact sub. Bearing in mind this was a player who was priced at 12.0 at the start of last season, I reckon Tevez looks exceptional value at the moment for 9.0 and that 2.5 saving over Aguero has certainly won me over for just now.

I would suggest keeping Ramires for the DGW and retaining N'Zogbia. Lambert plays an attacking style of football so you might wanna keep one of Bents or Zogs.

I have Ramires for the DGW with FT & Ivan. Think he is good value for the price.

I’m interested in Dembele. How has he gone in preseason? Can you tell me where you think he may line up on field? Will he get forward a bit & is he on any set pieces?

Choosing between Noble & Taraabt & Maloney & Dembele. Dembele has awesome fixtures.

      Cheers.

Personally, it's a big no for me as I tend to diversify my forward options due to fixtures reasons rather than form. Unless City are known to thrash every mid and lower tabled teams, I wouldn't even suggest going with Aguero and Tevez together. However, the general consensus is that it could work but not quite.

Agree with Grounderz, your aim by keeping your attack as diverse as possible is to have points gathered from the attacking forces of as many teams as you can. e.g out of 5 goals for city aguero may score 3 and tevez 2. However, out of 5 goals from city and 5 from swansea, aguero may score 3 and danny graham score 4. The point I'm making in the example is that having a diverse attack raises the roof on the amount of goals your fpl team can score rather than being limited by the total amount one team scores. You have a chance of getting any of the 10 goals of city and swans combined as opposed to 5 from city alone.

Sorry, don't agree at all Brut. Your example does't add up. How many times have City scored 5+ and how many times have Swansea?
The Tevez/ Aguero combo is perfectly viable especially considering GW1 and GW3.
Once the first international break comes you can become more lucid with your transfer plans and shift out on of Tev/Ag if it hasn't worked out. But it will work out.

but at the same time, most of aguero's assists will probably come from tevez and possibly vice-versa, so you get extra points that way instead.

If I were planning an early wildcard (which I'm leaning towards) I'd consider at a balls out lineup like this:

    Federici/Jaaskelainen
    Cole Zabaleta Rafael/Jenkinson/Tierney
    Bale Gerrard Maloney/Noble/Puncheon
    Rooney Tevez Torres

Despite having a cheap midfield three (though I assure you carefully selected) there are three protections built in against this. Firstly, having 4 big defenders means I can go 4-3-3 if the midfield has bad fixtures. Secondly, the midfield rotation is actually decent enough for the start. Finally there's up to 3 penalty takers there (Gerrard, Noble, maybe Maloney).

1- if Jenkinson is playing then Ars r less likely 2 keep clean sheets because he is not good enough for the prem ATM, so that is not 4 good defenders( tierneys poo and so is Norwhich, relegation for them this season me thinks)
      2 - Rafael rotation risk
3 - Puncheon probably wont play (saits midfield, davis, lallana, guilherme, cork)
4 - Noble and Maloney rotate poorly
5 - gomez takes pens (Not Maloney)
      6 - Very nice frontline 😀

1 - Jenkinson has had a season in the Prem and more importantly Cazorla has arrived as a passing midfielder, which should help protect the back four... I think the impact of Jenkinson on their CS chances will be relatively small
2 - There's a bit of cover in defence in case Rafael doesn't play, but he looks like first choice right back, if not nailed on
3 - Puncheon's had a great preseason and smashed in the goals - I think he's worth a punt but if not, Guthrie or maybe Robson-Kanu are possibilities
4 - But Noble, Maloney and Puncheon rotate OK
5 - Gomez rarely plays now

1- have u seen cazorla play?
2- he is not like cesc and plays keep ball he does all his damage in the final 3rd(call him a poor mans Iniesta if u like)
3- having a weak young right back makes him a target, which makes the defence a kit weaker if he dosnt step up!
4- Rafa should have been nailed on right back 2 years ago but hes never took his chance (whats that say?)
5- gomez plays all the time when he's not injured (ben watson steps in if hes out)
6-your systems flawed and u know it 😀

It's not even my system yet because I haven't committed to it! Maybe you don't want it to work 😉

Definitely going to be looking out for Jenkinson's chances, an Arsenal defender at 4.5m for a few GWs. Rafael less confident. Would advise you to check out the Gomez starts for yourself though. Maloney knocked him out of the team.

But who do you select from Arsenal to take advantage of that? No room in our front lines for Giroud/Podolski.

Walcott? - A bit crap, and yet still a full 9.0.
Gervinho? - Potential bargain at 7.5, but he can disappear.
Cazorla? - Amazing player, not really an FPL prospect.

Another way of looking at it.

Sunderland know they've not been scoring well in pre-season and MON isn't a bad manager - they come to Arsenal and set up super-defensively. 0-0.

    Here's my team:

    GK: Federici (Jaask)
DEF: Clichy, Cole, Hangeland (Demel, Clyne)
MID: Silva*, Guthrie, Bale, Dempsey, (Britton)
    FWD: Tevez, Rooney, Graham

    No money left

*That's if Silva does play if not he'll become Mate or Lampard.

Pretty happy let's just hope it goes well 🙂

    Mings, JussiJ.
    Ivan, Hughes, Fabio, Williams, Clyne.
    Lampard, Bale, Taarabt, Noble, Maloney.
    Rooney, Torres, Tevez.

Bank: £0.5m for Ivan to Vida GW2.

Given that it's a tad top heavy, should I downgrade either Frank or Torres to allow upgrades or leave it be?

Parm, if you are going for Mignolet, keep an eye on the stk keeper situation. If we get word who will start there is a great little rotation going on there (based on fixture difficulty, not home/away). Also, if stoke change keepers, you should be fine playing mignolet until you can sort it out

I have come to the conclusion that Noble is 90% nailed on 😀 its good enough for me especially with all set pieces in the bag. Malony on the other hand now faces very stiff competition

I've been thinking this. Who else is there at 5m?

Would a 4.5 like Guthrie or Obertan be worth a punt at the price?

Howson or Gibson, very little choice at that price.

Do you reckon Noble will start at centre-mid, or attacking in place of Nolan?

4-2-3-1 (most of the time) will have Nolan in the hole
4-5-1 (some of the time) Nolan misses out

Noble should play nearly all the time

So will one of Diarra/Diame be benched? It would be typical if Allaryce to go with 2 DM's, that's what worries me..

I think so. Depends on how attacking or defensive Sam wants to be

But you haven't actually given your reasoning for why you think this? Noble can't play as well as Nolan as the attacking mid. Nolan is also the captain. They've signed Diarra who's more likely to threaten Noble than Nolan.

It depends on the formation. You could have 2 CM's and 1 DM or in a more attacking formation 2 CM's and 1 AM.

I can't see Nolan playing as a CM

What is that based on? I would say that they are both equally at risk. Malony less, if moses leaves. I think that Noble will get plenty of game time, but will be rotated a fair bit

No way. I've been checking with Hammer fans and their website. He works hard and even if Sam takes a defensive approach he could very well be favoured over Nolan who doesn't work as hard

But diame, diarra and noble is so very very dull. But then it is sam allardyce, so you might be right!!

He and Baines form an elite partnership on the left, both feed off each other to score goals and assists. Points are on the way!
