Now a stone lighter after shedding his golf course weight, Carlos Tevez has once again emerged as a key player for Manchester City and Fantasy managers alike. The Argentine, who spent much of last season in exile after a spat with manager Roberto Mancini, was the star of last Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Chelsea, scoring a superb effort and overshadowing his compatriot, Sergio Aguero. But can he continue that form and keep the more expensive Aguero out of our Fantasy lineups?

One of the biggest attractions is the price difference between the pair, particularly in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, where Aguero has been priced at 11.5m in compared to Tevez’s 9m price tag. However, the difference in the Sky game is less marked with Tevez priced at 9.4m compared to Aguero’s 9.9m.

Another attraction is the post Community Shield comments from Roberto Mancini about Tevez being “a very important player” for City. With the side’s penalty taking, maverick striker Mario Balotelli still lacking match fitness and Edin Dzeko still out of favour as a starting striker, starts seem assured for Tevez for Man City’s opening games at least. But with Balotelli likely to be used sparingly during August, Aguero is set to retain penalty taking duties, arguably adding further weight to his hefty price tag.

Mark says…
I’ve been hesitant to consider Tevez over Aguero, for the simple reason that it seems inevitable that Roberto Mancini will look to give Mario Balotelli pitch time. My other concern is Mancini’s formation. The 3-4-1-2 looks to be a winning formula right now but the City boss is already indicating that he’ll abandon it once the real business gets underway. Even if it remains, I’m not sure how he builds both David Silva and Samir Nasri into his lineup, whilst keeping two strikers. I’m pretty sure they’ll be times when he’ll push Silva or Toure forward and abandon the idea of a pairing up front. For me, Aguero looks the most secure, regardless of the tactical scenario.

In the short-term, however, I have to admit I’m enormously tempted by the slimline Tevez. His goal and performance on Sunday was a clear indication of form and confidence and it seems nailed on that he’ll line up against Southampton. There’s every chance he could again steal the thunder from Aguero in that game and that 2.5 FPL difference can be invested to some effect elsewhere in our lineups. Will I be 100% that Tevez will take the field in a few Gameweek’s time? That’s the issue. For me, Aguero is a fire and forget option, by going with Tevez, it’s a question of cashing in on the short-term benefits and managing your way out of the situation later. After Sunday’s showing and the noise from the City camp, I might just be willing to take that on.

Andy says…
When I look at comparing two figures like Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero there is one thing that is always at the forefront of my mind – the Fantasy captaincy. The armband is the biggest duty for Fantasy Managers on any given Gameweek and, if I think I’m going to be spreading it about the Etihad stadium with regularity, I’ll make sure to pick the player that I think is not only most consistent and most likely to start games. That man, for me, without a shadow of a doubt, is Sergio Aguero.

However, in the first couple of months of the new season I really don’t see too many of Roberto Mancini’s men pushing the issue when it comes to captaincy. Given that inference I have to hark to the other dominant factor: price. While I think Aguero is more assured of pitch time, it doesn’t even begin to make up for the extra 2.5 in your pocket by opting for Tevez. As a player I prefer Aguero – exponentially so – but for the first couple of months of the season I’ll be managing with my head and leaving my heart at the door. Tevez will be in my team.

Paul Says…
It’s impossible to say over the long-term but, right now, he certainly looks to be. Tevez’s attitude has been praised by both Roberto Mancini and David Platt and the City boss has already stated he expects him to be an important player in the season to come – a sure sign of how he plans to utilise him. Aguero’s phenomenal debut season was, in part, helped by a number of factors –Tevez’s determination to force a move away from the Etihad and subsequent strop in the Allianz Arena, Mario Balotelli’s indiscipline and Edin Dzeko’s loss of form all meant that last year’s summer signing was too crucial to be left out at any point. Now that Tevez is 100% both physically and mentally, Mancini may well feel he can afford to slightly restrict Aguero’s game time when Mario Balotelli is fully-fit.

Personally, I feel that Tevez and Aguero could be handed roughly the same number of starts, with one or the other dropping out for Balotelli on occasion, while Edin Dzeko is mostly reduced to the role of impact sub. Bearing in mind this was a player who was priced at 12.0 at the start of last season, I reckon Tevez looks exceptional value at the moment for 9.0 and that 2.5 saving over Aguero has certainly won me over for just now.

I have to admit: this article was underwhelming.

The biggest analysis was of their prices. No stats from last year. No heat map analyses. No consideration of how they played in the CS.

Really, Scouts, I've seen better debate and analysis from the posters on here than in this article. Disappointing.

Nothing has been added to the debate ...

        Tevez.

I think they are close to evenly matched ... but the price does it for me. Tevez is also a Prime Mover. He makes things happen. Aguero is a poacher. As in away games last year, if the team isn't firing - he won't be.

The comparison stats show that Tevez was statistically better than Aggy last year. I think he plays 'harder' than Aggy. The "Aguero plays higher" isn't dead true, either. May games have Tevez with a higher avergae position.

        And his 2.5 is yummy.

I totally agree. I can't forget how he was two years ago, and what we all would have expected at the start of last year. Aguero is only the man because of the Tevez strop. If both are fit and motivated, you at least have to see it as an open question which one turns out to be the main man.

I don't understand the logic behind this sentence.

"Aguero is a poacher. As in away games last year, if the team isn't firing - he won't be."

But surely, if the team isn't firing, then Tevez won't be either? I see your point that Tevez is an impact player though and is more likely to create something from nothing.

The only thing that worries me about Tevez is the presence of Balotelli and Dzeko.

The real question is: why don't you consider them to be as much of a threat to Aguero as Tevez? You assume Aguero is "the Man", but that is only true if Mancini continues to think he is better than Tevez.

You make a fair point and to be honest, I think either could score 10 goals in their first 5 games and still be rotated. Mancini is that kind of manager.

So you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. The question is, which one will get more points? I think Aguero will but not by 2.5 million pounds worth.

Aguero doesn't create chances. He needs the team to feed him the ball.

Tevez, like Rooney, can play up top or can come deep to get the ball and create chance on his own ... irrespective of how the team itself is doing.

It wasn't billed as a statistical/heat map sort of an article, to be fair. The Burning Q things are more general procrastination. They covered; captaincy, how far the 2.5 will go, and season long and short term minutes - the primary concerns.

What about the argument to say that it will be easier to downgrade from Kun to Tevez if need be, whereas if you start with Tevez and Kun starts to bang them in you will be in a much weaker position. A position maybe even requiring wild card measures?

He'll start the majority of games, I would have thought. Not sure why people think QPR will do so well this season. They were poor last season and lucky not to go down. What has changed?

I'm torn on Swansea, don't think they'll perform with the same rigour and determination as they did last year and I do think their home form was what carried them through. They'll need to start picking up some more points on the road and keep that same organisation at the back that Brendan Rogers drilled into them.

Equally, I don't tip Liverpool to fare that well either. They've kept what was a largely ordinary squad and added very little to it. They've just done that Liverpool thing of buying average players for extortionate amounts of money. I think the second best team in Merseyside will finish around 7th place again.

Disagree I'm afraid. Swansea have lost their best player and will struggle badly compared to last year. Without Rogers and without Siggy and Allen they're fooked tbh.
Liverpool and particularly the racist were very unlucky last year and with Gerrard playing in front of Allen and Lucas they dont need to improve very much to cause all sorts of trouble for the bigger teams this year. They will certainly score a lot more.

Figueroa started virtually every game last season as well. Think I'll stick with Alcaraz, don't need him till GW3 so I can always re-adjust at the cost of a transfer.

Looks pretty good, do you plan on having Tevez and Torres long term? And also, do you think Yaya will play far enough up to perform well? I would probably pick Noble over Maloney, and I might try to Taarbat, especially considering QPR's first six games. Otherwise, as long as Zabaleta is a nailed on player (which I think he is) you team looks very nice

Thanks mate. £2m in the bank for Torres > Rooney.

Been chopping and changing between Noble and Maloney but people starting to think Noble may not be so nailed on.

What do you mean about Taraabt?

I didn't know people were saying that about Noble, I'm picking him mainly due to West Ham's starting fixtures; I feel like I need someone from West Ham with fixtures like those. Sorry about not finishing the sentence about Taarbat, I was trying to say he has a few tough fixtures to start the season, and in my opinion I don't see him doing very well, but I have been wrong before.

Similar to my team with the front 8. A few questions spring to mind:

      a. Why Maloney?
      b. What has changed with Taarabt this year from last? Is he on set-pieces?

    A) What defender do we think will do best for City, other than Kompany?
    and
    B) What midfielder will do best for City from 8 million down, and if your answer is Yaya, is there anyone on another team who would be better than him for 8 mil?
    C) Mata or Lampard?

3 Swans sticks out as an issue. But Britton is nailed on for 2 or 3 pointer if required. Other 4.5 options may have more potential upside though. Cole over Zab for dgw and gw 2. Walcott over Santi...but that is just personal choice. Notwithstanding my nitpicking, I think you have a very decent side.

Cheers man, yeah i agree with the swans issue, but i really cant for the life of me decide on any other 4.5 mid other than britton lol, i just cant, any suggestions? Yeah i'll keep with cole then i reckon, he's been in and out of my team but im keeping him now i reckon at least for the DGW, caz i think offers a good return of points, but yeah personal choice and all that. i reackon i have a good side, just hope it starts well 🙂

All the 4.5s I can think about may just be short term options. Guthrie/kanu robson may or may not nail down a spot though both have more goal potential than Britton. Puncheon, Kacanillic and marveaux look likely to get getsome game time at start of season and much better attacking potential as well but would be loathed to have to waste a tfer on a 4.5er if he loses his starts.Probably best to stick to Britton for assuredness and scope whats goin on in 4.5 land in first few weeks. with your other 7, doesnt look like you'll be needing him much in any case.

Yeah some good advice & shouts there, liking the marveaux mention, but like ya say i think i may just leave britton in for reassurance of starts, plus i may not even need him like you also say with the other 7, think its best to see what happens and who emerges as main candidate for a cheapie mid after first few weeks i agree, did have kacaniklic originally but really unsure if he'll start of get game time, britton it is then 🙂

It's preying on my mind that from what I've seen of Kagawa and Silva so far, they drop deep a lot to use their passing ability. That is, they have great pass involvement but at the expense of position and hence possibly goal involvement. Slightly pushing me away from Kagawa at the minute. Obviously did score, but even that was from central midfield and I wonder how he'll sustain that long term.

Compare them with Nasri who stayed high instead of dropping deep - he scored and assisted.

Had almost forgotten about the headache that follows the beginning of each season..
If you lads could help me ease the pain i would be for ever grateful

So this is my team at the time

    Federici (Friedel)
    ZABALETA - Hangeland - A Cole (Tierny - Clyne)
Bale - YAYA - RAMIRES - Noble (Dyer)
    Aguero - Torres - Graham

+ ofcourse the popular 2mil for Torres > Shrek

My main problem is if i should have Zabaleta or Lescot for Def

My plan B would be Zaba > Lescot , Yaya > Kagawa
and then go for 2 transfers in gw2 (Ramires > Pienaar and Torres > Rooney)

I think Lescot is a wiser choice for the long term but while Richards is injured Zaba will do

    So any advise from u pro's ?
