With two days until the season kick-off, Robin Van Persie’s future appears to have been decided with the announcement that Arsenal have agreed terms with Manchester United.

The official statement arrived this evening from Arsenal and United have also offered confirmation of the move, subject to a medical.

This is obviously momentous news on the eve of the Premier League and Fantasy season. Undoubtedly the biggest move of the summer transfer window so far, the Dutchman’s move to Old Trafford is – from a Fantasy perspective – arguably the most significant transfer since Cristiano Ronaldo left the Old Trafford club for Real Madrid in 2009:

Sir Alex Ferguson’s acquisition of the former Gunners skipper hands United a lethal looking frontline as they look to wrestle the title back from neighbours City. The two top scoring players in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in 2011/12, Van Persie and Rooney – with 269 and 230 points respectively – will surely rack up goals aplenty but, with either of the two more than capable of accruing huge points hauls to the other’s detriment in any given Gameweek, we are left with an unwanted armband dilemma as the Fantasy landscape around us is altered irrevocably.

Quite how Van Persie will fit into the pecking order in terms of set-pieces and spot-kicks is a crucial factor which will be keenly anticipated by Fantasy managers – if Rooney continues as the number one for penalties, the Dutchman’s stock will clearly drop in our estimations, with a tussle for bonus also a significant factor is how we invest in the United frontline. The Fantasy popularity of new boy Shinji Kagawa perhaps now looks a little less appealing until a clearer picture of the situation at Old Trafford, in terms of tactics and the likelihood of rotation, is established.

Over at the Emirates, Van Persie’s departure is surely set to boost the long-term appeal of new signings Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud. The Gunners’ French-based scout Gilles Grimandi admitted only last month that Giroud was signed from Montpellier in anticipation of Van Persie leaving – a central role looks likely for the Frenchman, then, but with Wenger conceding his summer signings will be eased into action in the season ahead, their initial impact is perhaps questionable. Despite this, it seems Podolski, at least, is set to start against Sunderland on Saturday as the Gunners gear up for action without their former skipper.

Fellow new-boy Santi Cazorla, though, now looks the most likely Gunner to benefit in terms of set-pieces; potentially, he should be handed corners and free-kicks, while the issue of spot-kicks looks up for grabs – Podolski scored from the spot on Sunday, though it’s worth noting that Mikel Arteta didn’t feature in the 4-0 win over Cologne.

We’ll have more on the full impact of the Van Persie move and its knock-on effects for both sides in a more substantial Moving Target later.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

As well as destroying any chance we had of winning the league, this RVP debacle is a massive spanner in the works for FPL isn't it. What's the consensus? Torres (+3m) for GW1?

Our first 11 is more than good enough. Still expecting us to bring in a right back.

The key will be whether a) we bring in another couple of decent squad players or b) the lesser squad players (perch, raylor, williamson) perform above their station again and the youngsters step up

Yeah, your first 11 is very good, it's just if/when the injuries come that I think you'll struggle. We're in a similar position, although we have strengthened a little in the summer. You reckon Wenger will splash the RVP cash before the window closes?

I wouldn't, i'd say that Rooney is still a better choice. 1) Less monay 2) Will now provide more assists for a better striker. Welbeck/Chicharito was not good enough last year

But I think that key is that they will be able to keep both rooney and rvp fresh by resting them. RVP could drop back into the rooney role, with wellbeck up front. Last season, there was literally no other decent options for them, so they had to work rooney into the ground. Hence he was rubbish towards the end of the season (real football, not fantasy)

Podolski is in for Graham now that RVP is set to join us. RMT?

    Federici (DDG)
Zabaleta - Hughes - Rangel - Cuellar (Nelson)
Ramires - Noble - Mata - Nani (Maloney)
    Tevez - Torres - Podolski

Planning Ramires > Nzog, Nani > Bale and Torres to Rooney with spare cash.

It's a funny thing: Valencia is a player who is #1 in his position and - in the absolute emergency - can play RB. This means his playing time chances are *augmented* more than the typical player. But people look at this as a reason to avoid him. It really makes no sense - he'd never remain there for long.

And it's all academic - he won't play RB week 1.

My team, keen to hear advice!!! I like Podolski but concerned he may not start GW1 -

        Federici
        Lescott / A Cole / Gorkss
Lampard / Bale / Yaya Toure / Taarabt
        Torres / Podolski / Pogrebnyak

    To Rooney owners,
what are your plans? Keep or sell?
Personally, I am struggling to either start with Torres or Rooney.
If I start with Torres- I will waste a transfer and might miss out Rooney points early on.
If I start with Rooney- RVP arrival might affect Rooney.

    a)Rooney+1m
    b)Torres+3m

Start with Rooney ... he'll be #1 on the teamsheet and still on kicks. Worst case scenario, you can shift from Rooney to RVP much easier than finding the 3.0/keeping the 3.0 in the bank.

All sensible advice... but are you sure he'll remain on PKs? Fergie's not known for his sentimentality and RVP is a better penalty taker.

Of course I think it could shift, eventually, to RVP. But why upset the applecart so much, if you were the (much-hated 😉 ) SAF?

Taking kicks from Roon would be a finger in the eye. SAF will use RVP to push Rooney to higher production ... something Roon hasn't had since CR7 left. If he f***s up, then I'd expect to see RVP step in.

Ha! I agree with your analysis. The only thing that makes me think RVP might take them is that Rooney never seems to me to fancy penalties (unlike Drobga, for example), even though he's more than decent at them. One thing he rarely gets enough credit for is his selflessness as a player, which makes me think he might be prepared to hand them over.

    De Gea, Federici
    Zabaleta, Hangelaand, Cuellar, Clyne, Demel
    Mata, Bale, Taarabt, Dyer, Noble
    Torres(c), Tevez, Podolski

    Bank 3.0m (Torres -> RVP/Rooney in GW2)

Also, is it worth doing Zabs & Bale -> Ivanovic & VDV to get an extra CHE DGWer in there?

That's true about the Arsenal wingers, but I think our first choice attack is now

        -------------Giroud
        Podolski----------Walcott
        -----------Cazorla
        --------Song---Arteta

What about Hangelaand & Podolski -> Hughes & Rooney in the above team?

As for VDV, he could go either way imo. Probably playing in the hole and on pens, he could be fantasy gold (again), or he could tweak his hammies after 20 mins...

    2.0

    by GW3 can have

RVP to Man U. The qustions in my mind-

    - Pentalties? Surely Rooney to keep until he misses/ isnt on the pitch and RVP gets it
    - Kagawa? Realy lowers my interast in him, saw him playing right up top, less so now.
    - Fergie now has option of resting Rooney/ RVP and stating with on up top. Nightmare.
    - Rooney to drop deeper to find the ball and link up play more?

Kagawa - will lose place to RVP once up to match fit
Rooney/RVP will both lose out on minutes
      Rooney will play behind RVP

agree except I think Kagawa will sit in an attacking mid with RVP and Rooney up top but with another striker signing surely there is gonna be rest and rotation galore

Ican see Rooney playing slightly deeper and linking up well with RVP. Rooney will still be on Pens. Kagawa will be the new scholes and play deeper but look to support but I cant see him playing in the hole now.

Its really no different to the Tevez/Aguero situation - either is worth of being a captain, either can score monster points and both will likely dilute the points between them and occasiionally one will getrested.

The nightmare is that both Utd and City will likely be the top goal scorers so its difficult to walk away from having at least two of RVP/Rooney/Tevez/Augero in your team.

not sure, have to check. but the problem is santon/cueller don't rotate that well. sure they rotate home away but that means you are still stuck with gw where you have spurs away or mci home or some crappy fixtures like that.

The only worry to have Graham is I worry I'll miss out points on Rooney.
From a scale of 1-10, how much is the chance for Rooney to score a high scoring gw for the first few gw?

OK. But my team has changed massively this morning since the RVP news, so it is very much a work in progress.

            DDG, Federici
Zabaleta, Baines, Big Verm (or Vidic), Cuellar, Hughes
            Bale, Carzola, Pienaar, Taraabt, Guthrie
            Torres, Tevez, Graham

I would have Ivanovic for Baines GW1, and maybe Nasri for Carzola

My thinking with the 3 big hitting defenders, is that there is going to be too much rotation of the forwards from the big teams. Big hitting defenders play every game

This is basically the polar opposite of yesterdays team (rooney, aguero, torres up front!). I could well change my mind again before the deadline

Home field advantage. After 75 years the US has defeated Mexico on their soil. I actually want to say congrats to Mexico for the streak.

The USA has a 15-32-12 all-time record against Mexico, but is 10-5-3 since 2000.

Until one minute ago, Mexico is 23-0-1 against the U.S. on home soil, including a 8-0-1 record at the Azteca. The lone blemish was a 0-0 draw in a 1998 World Cup qualifier.

I've been rethinking how we will line up this season. The formation I posted with my analysis

    http://uefacouncil.wordpress.com/2012/08/15/newcastle-united-analysis-courtesy-of-china-mag/

came from the quote from pardew saying that Ba would play 90% of games through the middle. I took that to mean we would play two up front. But what if he means that 90% of the games that Ba plays will be up front? He could be planning on playing just one of the dembas (one in the league, the other in the cups). The other would be on the bench to either come on and replace the OTHER, or to switch it up and go two up. We would also definitely play two up front for certain games.

If this is the case, then it majorly dents the potential of both demba's, but (and this is the key), it allows Marveaux to make the left sided position his own. If we do play 4-3-3 (which is the best formation for the players we have), I would prefer to play Marveaux on the left. He then becomes the biggest must have in the game at 4.5m!! It also increases Cabeye's stock as he would be playing ACM.

I would be interested to hear peoples thoughts on this.

Mate, i am sure u know much more than me on the Newcastle team and your summary makes perfect sense. The addition of Euro commitments is going to stretch your squad slightly and from a Fantasy Football perspective i am on 'wait and see' with Newcastle players ( except Colo who i plan to get in gw3). My first rule of FF is pick players who play, sounds a bit simple but trying to stick to it!

If we play 4-3-3, Marveux is defenitely best suited to the left attacker spot. We could also play Ba, or Jonas there. Or Barfa with Obertan on the right (please god no!)

Both are doubts for the weekend. But I would expect (hope), that at least one will play. As they are both coming off ramamdan, it would make sense to just start one of them, and switch it in the second half. Could be a more long term plan too though
