Steve Clarke has hinted he expects to utilise various options up front this season for West Brom. Alex Kacaniklic is determined to win a starting role for Fulham, Craig Gardner may be shifted to defence for Sunderland’s trip to Arsenal, while Matt Lowton has declared himself fit for Villa’s curtain raiser at Upton Park…

New West Brom boss Steve Clarke has revealed there may well be plenty of rotation and tactical alterations with his frontline over the season ahead. Talking to the club’s official website, the Scot revealed his plans:

“In the modern game you have to be adaptable, flexible, and able to play in different positions. I think, with the forward options we have, that’s there. There are a lot of good players fighting for those places, whether we go with two strikers or three is up for debate, and will depend on certain games and the opposition.”

The Baggies boss has rolled out 4-4-2, 4-4-1-1 and 4-3-3 formations in recent games and is clearly prepared to juggle his options – a situation which could well frustrate Fantasy managers. Peter Odemwingie has featured mainly on the right in the latter system but ideally we’d want him through the middle in order to excel as a Fantasy force and come close to that 15 goal debut haul back in 2010/11. Although the Nigerian’s versatility may see him play less centrally, it may well boost his game time under the new manager, however.

While the likes of Zoltan Gera has found a role in “the hole” on occasion and new signing Yassine El Ghanassy has even been handed set-pieces when on the pitch, Clarke has since added further attacking options – Romelu Lukaku and Markus Rosenberg have both arrived a little too late to feature in pre-season, meaning we are unlikely to get a better picture of Clarke’s intentions until a few games into the season.

Craig Gardner revealed he is ready to fill in at right-back for Sunderland’s match at Arsenal this weekend after Phil Bardsley was sidelined with an ankle operation. The midfielder has mainly featured behind the striker during pre-season due to Stephane Sessegnon’s absence but, having made no impact in an attacking role, was moved to defence for the final game of pre-season. With question marks over Wes Brown’s availability, Martin O’Neill could decide to give Gardner the nod over John O’Shea and Carlos Cuellar for the full-back role, with the latter two likelier to feature at centre-half or left-back, should Kieran Richardson be fielded behind the lone striker. Gardner is set for a tough time if called upon, however, with Arsene Wenger possibly fielding Lukas Podolski on the Arsenal left; the German marked his debut in the Gunners’ final pre-season match with a double and arrives in fine form.

Alex Kacaniklic is determined to nail down a regular role on the Fulham left flank this season. The Swede has come under the radar of many Fantasy managers due to his cut-price potential across the Fantasy games and has impressed when handed game time in recent matches. It’s uncertain, however, as to quite how Martin Jol views the situation; Kacaniklic started in a 4-4-1-1 in Fulham’s last pre-season match but was subbed off when Jol opted for a 4-4-2, with Hugo Rodallega joining Mladen Petric up front. With Clint Dempsey’s future still up in the air, it may well be that Damian Duff and Bryan Ruiz are in the driving seat for the wide berths when the Cottagers field a front two; Jol even admitted Rodallega has potential there upon the Colombian’s arrival, suggesting Kacaniklic is far from certain to get his wish.

Matt Lowton has handed Paul Lambert a boost by declaring himself fit and available for Villa’s opener at West Ham on Saturday.

“I took a knock in training on Friday so the manager said just as a precaution to sit that one out. But I’m back in training now so everything’s fine. It was my ankle and it just had a bit of swelling on it, but I just sat it out so it didn’t get any worse. I’m definitely excited ahead of Saturday and it will be great, if selected.”

The summer signing from Sheffield United missed the club’s final pre-season match but impressed when handed a starting role over the summer, even finding the net against Portland Timbers in late July. Eric Lichaj stepped in as Lowton’s replacement but the latter’s recovery gives Lambert a quandary ahead of the Upton Park showdown – Lichaj, however, may vie with Enda Stevens for the left-back slot, with Stephen Warnock seemingly out of the picture in the new regime. Defensively, Villa have been rather unimpressive in recent matches; eight goals conceded in their last four suggests Lambert’s propensity for attacking football – which caused Norwich’s backline to ship 66 goals last term – could see the midlands outfit struggle to register many clean sheets. There are clear budget options in Lambert’s rearguard but Fantasy managers will be looking to see if Lambert’s attacking football will come at a cost at the back.

    Morning Fantasy Football enthusiasts!

What does everyone think of the whole RVP situation? How much game time will he get, will this take away from Rooney's potential returns, how will it affect Kagawa?

As happy I am about United signing one of Europes top marksmen over the last 18months I can't help think "why". Surly we need a centaral midfeilder and left back more. It would be nice if we could still fill those slots but I highly doubt it now. I hope Kagawa is given a chance to shine as I really do think he has potential, but I can't see Fergie playing all three of Kagawa/Rooney and RVP!

If you saw in preseason we still didn't score any goals, and although I don't like to see Welbeck, Hernandez and Will Keane moved down the pecking order... We can't score goals :L And one thing RVP brings is goals!

But wouldn't that have something to do with the midfeild? I personally don't think we are balanced enough. Good point on Hernandez and welbeck....would like to see more of them.

      Repost of sorts.

Alright so i’m a United fan and i’m going to put some perspective to this move. A lot of it is assumption but this is what i think. Squad depth is the primary reason for this RVP move. And no, that does not mean that Rooney or RVP will be on the bench every week. United have class strikers as back up in Welbeck + Chicharito. After http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9K0S_d3Oq-o SAF’s ego is hurt and he needs to find a solution to challenge for all three trophies (FA cup + EPL + UCL). What i have noticed as a trend in the last 4 seasons or so is that the United players do look very drained when the big cup games and the UCL games come up and when you have a big game against a Liverpool at the weekend followed by lets say a Champions league semi-final against Bayern after that, you need to be able to give a Rooney/RVP a rest so that the other can do the job and can still be very fresh for the next big game. Do not forget, this could be fergie’s last 2-3 years at the helm and while Chicha + Welbs did offer good strength in depth, to seriously challenge on all fronts, Fergie needed a big hitter there somewhere. He did not want to take a chance and wanted a 2nd world class striker there in what could be the last team put together by him.

I still think Rooney is very much nailed on. He will infact up his game as he knows he cant take his place in the team for granted anymore. Expect the formations to change with the opposition. 4-2-2 against weaker teams at home. Otherwise, we will go ahead with a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3. Kagawa is class, i can see him playing as CM in a 4-2-2 as well but he is far from nailed on. United have great depth with Carrick Cleverly Kagawa Ando Scholes as CM options. Kagawa is not 'nailed on' but he will clock a lot of minutes for united.

none of the CM are good defensive options though, and last season uniteds problem wasn’t scoring goals, it was conceding them

united really needed to sign a solid defensive midfielders - they haven’t so they will have exactly the same problem

Its a statement..for me there are three things which make the reasons..

        1) A moral win over City in the striker arms race
        2) Rooney despite his best return played a lot of time picking the ball from the midfield. RVP is the perfect no.10 for Rooney's 9. With Giggs Scholes and Nani being phased out, a genuine corner taker and a back up free kick taker.
        3) United relied on a lot of wing play last season with Valencia and Young to feed balls to the striker...and lacked the direct route is strengthened with Kagawa who can pass in midfield, but someone who can be better in final third on a direct onslaught

any weakening of Arsenal if any is just a bonus...

That's a very good point. Having Van Persie really does help with the squad depth and the ability to always field one of Rooney or VP (or both) at their optimum and rest either or as and when needed. Doesn't help the fantasy selection dilemma though. 😉

Im pretty sure that a backup LB will come in, but the midfield is not as bad as it looks, maybe anderson and Fletch can come back and play, also it looks like Kagawa will spend some time there. If you remember last season, than I think you will remember games where United had a million chances and failed to convert. I think RVP will help us kill games off, and give more room for Rooney to work his magic.

I would go Lescott to Zabaleta and Cazorla or Valencia to Lamaprd. Valencia is proven. I'm a fan of Cazorla though...

I think Torres may flop too, but there are so many that own him. I feel like I should just give him a chance in the DGW and maybe against Newcastle if they look weak against Spurs. Then I'll eventually downgrade to probably Bent or Jelly. If it weren't for this DGW Torres wouldn't be given a thought at all.

Thanks for your thoughts. However I do not think that Mata will play both games considering played at Euro's & also at the Olympics. If putting in for the DGW only, bit pointless really IMO. Lescott to Zab is a good idea though, takes the occasional free kick also. Planning to keep Torres just see how he goes at the beginning - already scored a couple recently so my thoughts are more than likely will not flop like last year.

For me Torres captain GW1 is a no brainer given his recent form.

Very expensive front line though, maybe look at a cheap striker to build up other aspects of your team.

Don't know if Hazard/Podolski will settle well into prem life... Maybe take one gamble but two gambles could lead to -4 points on a extra transfer when you could have played safe.

I like this a lot. Similar to my team. Not keen on QPR D personally, but the rest is sexy.

Need some expert advice on Three questions:

    1) Will RVP make Roonpig score more or less Fantasy points?

    2) Do Green and Jaask rotate well?

    3) Who is the best 4.0 Defender to go for?

    Thanks

      1) hard to tell. will really have to wait and see. they could take each other's goals or they could create chances for each other meaning each would score more and get more assists
      2) not sure...
      3) not sure... try to find .5 and get cueller or fabio

        1) Agreed, it's going to be interesting but willing to give Roon a punt.

        2) Any idea how to find out?

        3) ALready got Cueller and I think Green is the bargin of the keepers so Fabio as well is too exposed for me

Pratik - if you're around, in case you missed it I left this comment on your fantastic website:

Very nice work Pratik. Particularly nice use of the horizontally scrolling, bouncing carousel of gameweeks. One problem with the design though. The hover-over menus can't be used on touchscreens (like iPhone, iPad etc). I do a lot of my browsing on touchscreens and it means I can't get to anything on the hover-over menus

I know most of the talk is about RVP but changing subject slightly what is everyone's thoughts on Sigurdsson? Its a 3 horse race between him bale and VDV.

What do you think about the Fin???

Would you have 3 Chelsea players if there wasn't a DGW?

I know it's tempting but I think you'll be left with players that you don't want after the DGW and it'll be difficult to trade 3 out.

3 City players is fine though, I think.

I see most people aren't going to start with Rooney or RVP but is everyone keeping 3.0 for Torres -> RVP just in case?

I know keeping 3.0 in the bank is ridiculous but it would be very difficult to bring RVP back in...

I like keeping money in the bank - allows you to move more freely with trannies without 4 pointers. Keep 3m in the bank but use it elsewhere if the RVP move doesn't look tasty nearer the time.

I think I’ve got it, going to over-value the midfield and WC once the striker situation clears up

    Fed (Jussi)
Cashley Ivanovic Zabs Tierney Demel (Cashley to Jan V after GW1)
    Valencia Mata Bale Piennar Gerrard
    Tevez Graham Pog

    Any suggestions on the 3-5-2??
