Having rolled out the Scout Picks on Friday evening, we now turn our attentions to the first Differential article of the new campaign. If you’re new to this, the idea is to highlight certain Fantasy assets with low ownership – typically under 5% – ahead of each Gameweek and wax lyrical over their chances for the fixture ahead. This term we’re concentrating on just one player per Gameweek and, to get the ball rolling, we’ve opted for a proven Premier League goalscorer…

Let’s be honest – last season was a bit of a write-off for Darren Bent. The Villa forward arrived on the back of 41 goals over his previous couple of campaigns but the installation of Alex McLeish to the Villa Park hotseat put paid to the forward’s Fantasy potential, as the midlands outfit attempted to grind out results under the former Birmingham boss. As a result, Villa returned a meagre 37 goals over 2011/12, the second lowest tally in the league and only one more than Stoke; starved of service up top, Bent managed just nine goals before his season was ended in early March due to an ankle injury.

With McLeish now nothing more than a bad memory, Villa fans approach the new season with far greater enthusiasm. New boss Paul Lambert has handed his players a license to attack as he looks to replicate the offensive threat of former club Norwich; the Canaries racked up 52 goals upon their top-flight return under the Scot, a goal haul bettered only by the top six last time round. Already, Bent has been singing the praises of the new man in charge, with a change in tactics set to alter how we assess Villa’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead:

“He wants us to be really dangerous and create loads of chances. He wants us to be an attacking outfit. He has a philosophy where he says: ‘If we’re going to lose, we’re going to lose having a go’. He wants us to have a right good go at every single team. That’s how it should be. We have attacking players in the team who can cause real damage and he’s told them to go out and do their stuff. It’s certainly going to be a dream for me playing that way as a striker.”

Villa roll up to West Ham for their Upton Park opener on the back of decent pre-season form. Lambert’s side have racked up eight goals in their final four fixtures and Bent signed off on summer duties with a smartly-taken brace against Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen – aided by the creativity of Charles N’Zogbia, Brett Holman and Stephen Ireland, he could well be set to spoil Big Sam’s party tomorrow afternoon.

Bearing in mind the Hammers managed just seven clean sheets at home in the Championship last season, Lambert’s men will be anticipating goals. With spot-kick duties in his locker, an ownership currently under 3% and a strong set of fixtures to follow, Bent looks the man most likely to produce as the Villains seek to exorcise the ghost of McLeish with a new-found sense of optimism.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

      I replied to your post 😉

      I want six forwards but have to choose three.

      Rooney because he is nailed on (?)

      Graham due to form

      Bent because Villa will score a lot of goals this season

    Alright, decision finally made. Going with:

    Federici (de Gea)
    Ivanovic, Hangeland, Zabaleta (Clyne, Cuellar)
    Michu, Mata, Taarabt, Yaya Toure (Pienaar)
    Petric, Tevez, Torres

    Currently planning Torres > Rooney in GW2 with the 2.0 I have in the bank. Not too keen on having three of each Chelsea and Man City (certainly not considering I'm a Man Utd fan...), but as much as I feel United and Arsenal coverage is important long-term, there's too much question over who will play and where.

    Last Post, I’ve got to find a way to get another 1.0m out of my team for RVP.

    DDG – Federici
    Lescott – Saylor – Hangeland – Demel – Barnett
    Nasri – Hazard – N’Zogbia – Maloney – Guthrie
    Aguero – Torres – Graham

    3.5m spare
    For:
    Nasri -> Silva
    Torres -> Rooney
    Hazard -> Bale

    However Im keen on getting RVP instead of rooney which would be the best way to draw out an addition 1m from my team with the lowest possible damage.

    Should I:
    A) Downgrade Federici to Cerny and Lescott to Zaba
    B) Downgrade Saylor to a 4.0 and have three rotating cbs
    C) Other

    Leaves me £2.0M for Torres > Rooney GW2. Cheers guys and good luck

      Overall looks strong.
      I think Pogrebnyak is a good shout. And it is not a problem to keep him over GW3 as both Noble and Maloney have nice fixtures GW3.
      Personally I rate N'Zogbia over Pienaar.
      Don't you think having double defensive cover from West Ham is too much? What about Jaask->Scwarzer? Szwarz and Fed rotate quite nicely till GW 9 or so. You could free up .5 with Tomkins->Demel.
      Also you are risking price rice of Rooney so you maybe cannot afford him having only 2.0 in bank.

          Welcome.
          I believe he starts. Based on the scout's predicted lineup and the fact that last season he started 33 games out of 38 and some of his absences were because of minor injuries.
          I am struggling with the same issue. Have Bale in my team already and basically can get any midfielder I want for last MF spot. There just does not seem to be any better options than Silva imo.

      Noble, N'zogbia, Taarabt, Fellaini, Bale

            No, I think he means me.

            Not sure what I rambled on about.

      Last question from me:

      Given that Lampard and Torres is allready in the team, and that 3.0 is saved for United coverage later on, would you go...

      A, Mata & Demel

      or

      B, 6.5-midfielder & Vermaelen/Lescott/Vidic/Ivanovic

      A) Spread the love and play De Gea & Gorkss

      OR

      B) Double up on Reading and play Federici & Gorkss

        Do you have some reasoning why Gorkss and not Gunter?

          I was told on here that Gorkss was nailed on but now I'm filled with doubt! + I was looking at a four-four-two magazine which previewed every team and all that jazz, and for reading, they said Gorkss is their key player :S

            OK. Convincing. I have to go now also with Gorkss and dump Gunter.

      I think I'm done.

      Schwarzer (Green)
      Hangeland Lescott Cuellar (Clyne and Demel)
      Larsson Bale Cazorla Mata (Noble)
      Graham Pod Aguero

      1m to spare, anything particularly worrying? My main concern is Cazorla. I was thinking of going Yaya but I'm not so sure about having 3 city players.

        I like the look of that team actually. I may copy it!!!

        Seriously though, nothing wrong with 3 Man City players but you could do with one more top 4 defender. If Lescott doesn't play you're left with 3 defs out of Wham, Soton, Sun, and Ful along with a Ful or QPR keeper.

        Not really very balanced, is it?

          Thanks for your advice. I know, my defence really does worry me. And I think I may change Green to Begovic. What would you think of making these changes:

          Cuellar --> Cole or Ivanovic
          Lescott --> Zab
          Cazorla --> Yaya or Nasri

          But would only leave me with 0.5.

            And that leads me to ask:

            Cole or Ivanovic? That's one that could so easily go either way.

      Quick poll:

      A) Terry and Lampard or
      B) Cole/Ivanovic and Mata

      Morning deadzoners, well here we are then, the beginning of another years worth of fantasy football and consequently the loss of hours and hours of my life. Hope everyone has their teams sorted.

      I think i'm heading into today's games with this lot:

      Federici
      Zabaleta, Hughes, Gorkss
      Cazorla, Ramires, Bale, Nasri
      Torres(c), Tevez, Graham

      Subs: DDG, Kacaniklic, Kaboul, Clyne

      2m in the bank.

      Any concerns, changes needed?

        Do you think that Gorkss is more nailed on than Gunter? They cost the same and both are in the scout predicted lineups.

        Zab, Hughes, Ramires, Nasri, Kacaniklic, Kaboul, Clyne

          Here what you are saying, i'm playing for the first 3/4 GWK's. History says that i always play my wildcard early so i figured i would go for points early on then activate the wildcard if needed. Don't imagine having Ramires, Nasri for any longer than a couple of GWK's.

      Almost swapped aguero bale and noble to tevez vdv and valencia backed out so I thoroughly expect the latter trio to score heavily this weekend!
