Having rolled out the Scout Picks on Friday evening, we now turn our attentions to the first Differential article of the new campaign. If you’re new to this, the idea is to highlight certain Fantasy assets with low ownership – typically under 5% – ahead of each Gameweek and wax lyrical over their chances for the fixture ahead. This term we’re concentrating on just one player per Gameweek and, to get the ball rolling, we’ve opted for a proven Premier League goalscorer…

Let’s be honest – last season was a bit of a write-off for Darren Bent. The Villa forward arrived on the back of 41 goals over his previous couple of campaigns but the installation of Alex McLeish to the Villa Park hotseat put paid to the forward’s Fantasy potential, as the midlands outfit attempted to grind out results under the former Birmingham boss. As a result, Villa returned a meagre 37 goals over 2011/12, the second lowest tally in the league and only one more than Stoke; starved of service up top, Bent managed just nine goals before his season was ended in early March due to an ankle injury.

With McLeish now nothing more than a bad memory, Villa fans approach the new season with far greater enthusiasm. New boss Paul Lambert has handed his players a license to attack as he looks to replicate the offensive threat of former club Norwich; the Canaries racked up 52 goals upon their top-flight return under the Scot, a goal haul bettered only by the top six last time round. Already, Bent has been singing the praises of the new man in charge, with a change in tactics set to alter how we assess Villa’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead:

“He wants us to be really dangerous and create loads of chances. He wants us to be an attacking outfit. He has a philosophy where he says: ‘If we’re going to lose, we’re going to lose having a go’. He wants us to have a right good go at every single team. That’s how it should be. We have attacking players in the team who can cause real damage and he’s told them to go out and do their stuff. It’s certainly going to be a dream for me playing that way as a striker.”

Villa roll up to West Ham for their Upton Park opener on the back of decent pre-season form. Lambert’s side have racked up eight goals in their final four fixtures and Bent signed off on summer duties with a smartly-taken brace against Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen – aided by the creativity of Charles N’Zogbia, Brett Holman and Stephen Ireland, he could well be set to spoil Big Sam’s party tomorrow afternoon.

Bearing in mind the Hammers managed just seven clean sheets at home in the Championship last season, Lambert’s men will be anticipating goals. With spot-kick duties in his locker, an ownership currently under 3% and a strong set of fixtures to follow, Bent looks the man most likely to produce as the Villains seek to exorcise the ghost of McLeish with a new-found sense of optimism.

What do you Gents think to this... There's method to my madness somewhere providing nobody gets sent off or injured...

    Given (Daniels)
Ivanovic, Zzableta, Jenkinson (Tierney & Clyne)
    Toure, Bale, Allen, Dyer (Pienaar)
    Torres (c), Rooney & Tevez

Plans to Ship Torres out Sunday for Graham or Petric for GW2
GW3 upgrade Dyer to Kagawa/ Valencia
Then GW4 or whenever Sagna returns Jenkinson to Enrique.

          I'm a fan of 3 heavyweight mids + 6.5/or 5.0 + Guthrie.

If anything goes wrong you can easily downgrade one of them and use that cash elsewhere.

          If you want a cheap mid I suggest you this - Lampard(DGW), Yaya, Larsson/Michu/Pienaar, Noble/Maloney/Miyaychi then Guthrie/Britton/Maureavx

Reckon it's worth using the 0.5m in my bank to do Dyer -> Taraabt? Very tempting, especially since I already have Graham.

Yeah, that told me that he was "Ok at the moment" 😉

For me, I think he'll get pitch time in both games. Probably not the 180 minutes - more like 140. There's no doubt that there's a rest coming but it's not clear when. My bet is that he'll get rested around an international break. Di Matteo said he'd rest him intelligently so...

After the Newcastle game next weekend, Chelsea's next league game is Septemeber 15. Spain play a friendly on September 7. My bet is that he'll get rested from international duty and perhaps the Super Cup on 31 August. This would give him a sustained period of three weeks off before the next league game on September 15 - Gameweek 4 to us.

To me, that makes sense. He'll need sustained rest, not five days off. That could mean he's flogged over Chelsea's next three league games with that in mind.

Double gameweek against two teams that are usually in the bottom half of the table and he is bound to start scoring goals for Chelsea being the only striker. There is a good chance he will have a good season and start producing the final product. Plus how would you know if Aguero or Tevez will score, anything can happen with city's strikers.

      Barnett = Bench
Tierney was the pick at left back, but now they signed Garrido who will threaten him greatly
R Bennett is now the pick!

          At the start yes....

I wouldn't pick him though, personally I would have Demel, Gunter, Clyne all before any Norwich

Thoughts on the following lineup? I'd like to squeeze Aguero in but cannot seem to be able to chop 2.5 off my current list.

    Federici
    Hangeland, Tomkinson, Jenkinson
    Bale, Mata, Valencia, Yaya
    Petric, Torres, Tevez

    De Gea, Noble, Williams, Clark

That looks good to me`although I don't rate the Jenkinson pick, you know the downfalls there.

Valencia may play at right back too, but may still be a decent option.

I'd be tempted by De Gea, Jenkinson, Valencia --> Szcezny, Vidic, N'Zogbia / Michu

Take him out, it's really on the cards. Take your pick from Michu /Zog / Larsson / McClean / Pienaar / Taarabt who are all considered decent picks

But remember Song has really good through balls and gets a lot of assists, remember how many times he setup Rvp last season? I'm deciding over Larsson/Piennar/Song...

Cole, ivanovic is a good attacker but he is reckless. He will get a lot of yellow cards and on occasion a red. Cole is more disciplined and will be a more trustworthy choice.

Ivan for attacking threat, I doubt Chelsea have much more money to spend on an Ivanovic replacement if they want to stay within fifa £££££ fair play.

Think about it this way, he may get an assist once every blue moon, however he may not start every game so he could possibly lose a shutout.
