Marouanne Fellaini towers above the United defence to earn three points for Everton as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are shackled, with Robin Van Persie reduced to a cameo role. Here’s the stock check following the Goodison clash…

On The Up

Marouanne Fellaini
Pushed up in support of Nikaca Jelavic, the big Belgian was imperious and led the line with strength and composure. It’s not clear if David Moyes will persist with Fellaini in the role, with Steven Naismith and new signing Kevin Mirallas, the Everton boss clearly has options. However, this promises to be a big season for Fellaini and at 6.5 in the FPL and 4.7 in the Sky Sports Game, Fantasy managers may well be rethinking Steven Pienaar as the protagonist in Everton’s midfield ranks.

The Everton Defence
Moyes’ rearguard was defiant throughout and magnificent to a man. Leighton Baines delivered his first clean sheet of the season – he remains the luxury item in the Toffees back four but, on this form, a strong haul of clean sheets over the season could be in the offing to help justify the outlay.

David De Gea
While United struggled in attacking terms, De Gea stood firm against a first half blue tide, pulling off notable saves to keep the score deadlocked at the interval. With Anders Lindegaard breathing down his neck, the Spaniard has to produce. Tonight he was arguably United’s most impressive performer – he had to be.

Going Down

Wayne Rooney
Rooney was the danger man for United but Sir Alex Ferguson’s attacking players were far from potent. While they dominated possession and passed the ball well, they lacked a cutting edge and a direct threat. Rooney’s owners will go into the weekend clash with Fulham concerned that Robin Van Persie will be called upon to provide that, while Rooney retreats deep.

United’s Widemen
Ferguson appeared to allow his attacking players fluidity with Shinji Kawaga and Rooney interchanging up front or drifting deep to pick up the ball. The uncertainty surrounding Kawaga’s role and the likelihood of a Rooney/Van Persie pairing will cause concern. It appears we could see Nani, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck and Kawaga competing for two starts in wide areas throughout the season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    I posted this the other day, but you might be interested if you missed it.

    For anybody who likes a bet, there seems to be a massive anomaly between the odds of newcastle to win the europa league (33/1) compared with the odds on spurs and liverpool (14/1).

    Liverpool and spurs squads are stronger than ours, and so better equipped for a run in the europa , but at those odds, the toon has to be worth a punt. What do you reckon? The situation is similar in the domestic cups, and the league without the manchester clubs.

    The above odds are on paddy power.

      i noticed this the last day myself.. i have to disagree with you on liv having a stronger squad than newc though, maybe over the years, but not anymore.. also newcastle's best 11 is much stronger than livs.. i suppose it comes down to experience, and since newc are still in transition and havn't won a major trophy for a while, i see why they are a better price.. personally i'll definitely be having a cut at newc and napoli

        Newcastle's first 11 is definitely better than liverpool's, but we are going to be relying on the likes of ryan taylor, mike williamson and shola ameobi to get us through the early stages of europa! It will be interesting to see how many first teamers we take to greece this week. My guess is not many!

          harper, r taylor, obertan, anita and marveaux are all v capable at that level, whereas all of liv's bench from their game on sat are deadwood IMO- carragher, cole, adam and carroll to a lesser extent.. only ting about newc is ameobi is 3rd choice striker, which doesn't bode too well for them, even though ba and cisse are both well able to play up top on their own..
          ya you'd wonder if ben arfa, cabaye etc will go to greece, if they bring a strong team i think torres will do very well against them sat evening

    Why does RDM think that Mata needs a 'rest' after his exertions in Euro 2012?

    He played just three minutes in the whole tournament.

        on that basis Nasri, Silva, Torres would need rest too.

    Are people reading much into Man U's poor showing last night especially in attack?
    I was set on Torres to Rooney/RVP, but Rooney apparently was lacklustre while it's still too early to go RVP. In saying this, which of these transfers is best?:

    A) Torres -> Rooney/RVP

    B) Mata -> Michu

    C) N'Zog -> Michu

    D) Mata -> Kagawa/Nasri/Cazorla

    E) Save transfer for next week

        Interesting, what did you make of United's performance? They didn't offer too much going forward but in saying that Man U cover is pretty important.

        If I go A, should go for Rooney or RVP?

        Only three DGWs so you're just about free to do what you want. I have five, so my hand is forced a bit.

        Arsenal missed chances, but Cazorla was/is the class act. Set pieces and scored 1 in 4 in Spain.

      I was looking at getting him yesterday, then the game, then the baps - now I want him even more.

      Although it would be classic Everton to keep a cleanie against United, then be shite against 'lesser' teams. Plus, Gibson taking some corners lowers Baines' assist potential a bit.

      Pointless transfer to witch between Chelsea players, I personally got Lamps, and I agree that Hazard looked great, but I wont be wasting a transfer swiching to him. Mata should come good soon.

      They will fight for it yes..But don't see that happening.. Whatever happens Newcastle can't play better than last year(+Europa League) and I simply don't see Everton's squad being strong enough to do it..

      Everton 5th and Newcastle 7th I reckon

        that's a crazy statement, newc only got cisse after xmas last season, they have ben arfa and steven taylor fully fit at the start of this year, and the whole squad have a year together under their belt, plus the addition of anita.. to say that they can't play better than last year is nothing short of retarded

    morning gents

    i saw that norwich defender barnett 4.0 had 16% ownership at the start of the season and when week 1 came the Ryan Benett started instead. name confusion here, probably many wouldnt care but which of the two is considered the main defender for norwich as i have him and qpr nad west ham are in the horizon at carrow road

    thanks

      I think it will be down to whoever takes penalties, so it is hard to tell. Rooney wont score less from deep if he still has pens. And I dont see them taking penalties off him, so I went rooney.

      He should be the spearhead of the attack, so I'd say yes, long-term. But will he definitely start next week though? I'm still not entirely convinced he will. Only played 30(?) minutes pre-season, and 20-25 last night. Will Fergie ease him in, or give him 60 then off? Can't see him playing anywhere near 90 though.

    Aguero/Torres/Pog

    Regardless of jerking knees and injuries, unless anything changes I appear to be in a bind; this would be my GW2 team.

    de Gea

    Clyne, Kompany, Vermaelen, Ivanovic

    Pienaar, Robson-Kanu, Kagawa, Bale

    Graham, Podolski

    Federici, Aguero, Beausejour, Demel

    Now...I don't overly like the look of that but with 0 in the bank (probably foolish of me) then I'm struggling to decide on the best move. I'd like to avoid hits, but seems that this early on one might be needed.

    I could just drop down to Tevez from Aguero this week, and wait an see on Aguero's prognosis before deciding if and where I should spend the freed up cash.

    Thoughts much appreciated.

        Well I suppose I could save a FT, might come in handy for the international break. Seems like I might be best to get someone I know will definitely GW2 so that I can put Robson-Kanu or Clyne on the bench. You not think?

    So I think we were all left none the wiser with the United Match..

    Do you put Rooney/RVP in based on that showing?

    The only player that looked promising too me was Kagawa but will he play every match?

      I would expect him to. Fulham is a tasty fixture, but I don't want to take a 4 point hit for either of them with Aguero possibly coming back against QPR.
