Marouanne Fellaini towers above the United defence to earn three points for Everton as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are shackled, with Robin Van Persie reduced to a cameo role. Here’s the stock check following the Goodison clash…

On The Up

Marouanne Fellaini
Pushed up in support of Nikaca Jelavic, the big Belgian was imperious and led the line with strength and composure. It’s not clear if David Moyes will persist with Fellaini in the role, with Steven Naismith and new signing Kevin Mirallas, the Everton boss clearly has options. However, this promises to be a big season for Fellaini and at 6.5 in the FPL and 4.7 in the Sky Sports Game, Fantasy managers may well be rethinking Steven Pienaar as the protagonist in Everton’s midfield ranks.

The Everton Defence
Moyes’ rearguard was defiant throughout and magnificent to a man. Leighton Baines delivered his first clean sheet of the season – he remains the luxury item in the Toffees back four but, on this form, a strong haul of clean sheets over the season could be in the offing to help justify the outlay.

David De Gea
While United struggled in attacking terms, De Gea stood firm against a first half blue tide, pulling off notable saves to keep the score deadlocked at the interval. With Anders Lindegaard breathing down his neck, the Spaniard has to produce. Tonight he was arguably United’s most impressive performer – he had to be.

Going Down

Wayne Rooney
Rooney was the danger man for United but Sir Alex Ferguson’s attacking players were far from potent. While they dominated possession and passed the ball well, they lacked a cutting edge and a direct threat. Rooney’s owners will go into the weekend clash with Fulham concerned that Robin Van Persie will be called upon to provide that, while Rooney retreats deep.

United’s Widemen
Ferguson appeared to allow his attacking players fluidity with Shinji Kawaga and Rooney interchanging up front or drifting deep to pick up the ball. The uncertainty surrounding Kawaga’s role and the likelihood of a Rooney/Van Persie pairing will cause concern. It appears we could see Nani, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck and Kawaga competing for two starts in wide areas throughout the season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Do you think Demel/McCartney will get more CS than Clyne?

Morning all. I can't believe all this talk of having no Utd players - they have FUL, sot, WIG the next 3 gameweeks. Talk about over-reacting to one defeat against a good Everton side. United usually stuff Fulham and Wigan at home and Southampton aren't great defensively. Ferguson will have them more than ready after last night's defeat

Either way, if United win 3-0 against Ful and Van P scores, everyone not having him will say "I knew this would happend, its so obvious..."
and if they dont win, everyone will say "I told u so" yada yada yada..
Imo, van Persie is the best pick.. I really think he will score great the coming 3 gws

Totally agree, the big question is who to get.. For me its leaning towards Van P, just a bit worried he could start on the bench against FUL..
They didnt play very well yesterday, agree.. but, Everton made them look pretty bad.. they did a great game in defence. Ful, Sot, Wig are not that good in defence imo

Fulham and Southampton will not be walkovers, the Utd squad is not what it was a few years ago, they're a fading force in my opinion and will not win the league. City top, Chelsea second and Utd 3rd if they're lucky.

This gets said every season yet every season they finish 1st or 2nd. City are my favourites too but that doesn't mean Utd are all of a sudden useless, or that Rooney and RvP won't get 20+ goals each.

Nani is horrible. Avoid! Young has not been consistent enough for United either. Those two will continue to share match time until one of them does enough to hold the position down.

RVP or Rooney will do nicely imo. Take your pick.

Valencia/Kagawa after that. Valencia more so when Rafael or Jones start at RB.

You're right, but who should I get - Rooney or RVP? I have 2.0 in the bank so I can only get rooney for the time being. For RVP I'll have to either take a hit or roll over my free transfer.

I agree it's a bit of a tricky choice but I might give the edge to Rooney for now just because RvP may start on the bench again. I think long-term that Van Persie will play furthest forward however. Kagawa did look quite good in spells last night so he could be great value at 8.5

If you bring players in for only three gameweeks then you're not planning ahead. ManU fixtures while sot and WIG might not be as easy as you think given the way the team was controlled so effectively by Everton yesterday.

Look at the fixtures after that and the schedule looks very tough in comparison to City, Spurs, Chelsea where there are plenty of potential big hitters to compensate for the lact of United cover.

For me, owning a United player now would be nothing more than insurance.

RVP does worry me and if he strikes up some form, I'll be there like a bullet. Kagawa is also interesting.

But for now, I think bringing in a united player is a bit of a gamble (expensive too). Given the other options available I will almost certainly pass over the chance of points from Fulham

          - and gamble instead on Spurs 😀

I don't agree with that. You can transfer Rooney or RvP out for their "tricky" run if you like but United also enjoy scoring hat-fuls against Spurs , then Stoke at home in week 8 and then the defensive wall that is Arsenal in week 10

Not at Goodison they don't! But no I'm not saying other teams fixtures aren't potentially more favourable, just that (almost) any Utd home game is a favourable fixture for them and I'm getting some Utd in my team. You can still fit in City, Chelsea and Spurs players too

Reflecting on last night I kept coming back to the fact United had a central midfielder at centre half and a right winger at right back. What is SAF playing at? If any other manager did this there would be questions asked. Imagine if Wenger did it, people would still be laughing on this site now. He had an international right back on the bench!

Oh and how did Baines get the three bonus ahead of Fellaini?

Moyes knew that Fellaini would be all over Carrick, so stuck him high up the pitch. Not sure he'd get that same amount of joy against quality CBs, so I imagine he'll drop deeper in most games. I reckon Pienaar and Jelly are still the best choices.

Yeah i'm not a fan of taking hits either. There will be a couple of occasions during the season when they are justified but you start taking hits after GW1 and you will get in the habit of using them too easily.

oh yeah.. its so easy to take hits once u started.. later on if you really compete in a minileague, I sometimes take a hit if my main rival has done so aswell..
But this early, it should only be done if you really have problems with injuries.. in this case, Obviously Torres will play, and at home..

But he will play gw2, and could score at home.. so dont panic, u will regret this (and blaim me, lol) if Rooney/Van P scores a hat trick, but really.. imo, the best option is to just chill

It's interesting that when you try to work out how to accommodate Rooney, RVP and Kags the problem keeps returning to the lack of a Keane-level or even Fletcher-level defensive midfielder. It affects both defence and attack - if you could trust him to cover the back four, the other players would be freed to attack with maybe Kagawa tracking back for a little support. Apart from two defenders I'd say no one cpuld tackle last night.

I think this is a real problem for united, Kagawa could get a much more advanced role in 4-4-2 if they had a Keane as CDM. I see the same problem in Arsenal, both Diaby and Arteta (prev Song/Arteta) are box-to-box players, excellent yes.. but not excellent CDM..

I have a dilemma...I want to get rid of VDV and Aguero, but dont know what my best options are..I am thinking about Nolan in midfield cos he probably has the best run of fixtures to score, but seems that it weakens my team. and with Aguero gone, I need a consistent striker to score pts, and Tevez doesnt have the best fixtures to profit from. just to dispel this myth that chelsea have good fixtures after GW3, the ticker says their fixtures are the worst in the league for gw4-13, gw4-12, gw4-11,

Alright lads, bit knacked after the weekend, got 55 points (5 players left to play on Wed), which was ok, but have a number of players that could do with switching out for the next gw:
    -------------Federici-------------
    Williams--Ivanovic--Lescott
    Dyer--Mata----Bale--McClean
    --Torres---Aguero--Pogreb--

    Bench: A. Ferdinand, Hangeland, Noble

Injury to Aguero means he is an almost cert for being swapped out. Also feeling like Reading could get a hammering off Sunderland at the weekend, and certainly can't see Pogrebnyak scoring so possibly moot keeping him there. Torres didn't look very sharp either, and Hazard looking to be a better bet than Mata from what I saw on Sunday.

Really liking the look of Petric and Tevez from the weekend, would have had Petric in if it wasn't for the DGW. Recommendations? Thinking I will just wait till the definite news on Aguero and swap him for Tevez if he's injured but can't help but think I could be dropping points by not making changes.
