Marouane Fellaini torments United from start to finish and hands Everton the three points after heading home from a corner. The Toffees continue the strong home form displayed at the end of last season, while Unitedโ€™s two new boys produce contrasting performances as Sir Alex Fergusonโ€™s side get off to a losing start:

Marouane Fellaini
Tucking in behind Nikica Jelavic in David Moyesโ€™ trusted 4-5-1 formation, the Belgianโ€™s aerial ability proved the undoing of United time and again. With Everton targeting the visitors full-backs with long, diagonal balls, Fellaini continually put Sir Alex Fergusonโ€™s side under pressure and grabbed the only goal of the game as Everton pulled off the first shock of the season. As to whether he will continue to play as far more is perhaps debatable โ€“ Kevin Mirallas wasnโ€™t registered in time for the game and is also versatile enough to play fill the position but at 6.5 in FPL and 6.1 in the Sky Sports game, Fellaini is sure to see plenty investment before the weekendโ€™s trip to Villa.

Everton Defence
Perhaps last nightโ€™s result wasnโ€™t quite as shocking as the media suggest. Everton closed out last season with six clean sheets in their last eight at Goodison and their defensive resilience was at the fore once again last night with an intelligent, well-drilled display ensuring they kicked off the season with a victory. Tony Hibbert and Sylvain Distin come in at 5.5 in FPL and if the Toffees maintain their superb form at the back in front of their supporters, the duo look decent value. With only two home matches in the next seven Gameweeks, though, many will overlook Moyesโ€™ defenders, bearing in mind that Swansea and Spurs play at home five times over the same period.

David De Gea
The Spaniard produced a strong performance between the sticks to surely cement his place as Unitedโ€™s number one. Priced at 6.0 in FPL, De Gea certainly looks firmly in the driving seat ahead of Anders Lindegaard, with his 14.2% ownership on the rise on the back of last nightโ€™s heroics.

Shinji Kagawa
Handed the role in โ€œthe holeโ€ behind Wayne Rooney with Danny Welbeck and Nani on the flanks, the summer signing looked a class apart but โ€“ in a similar story to that of Santi Cazorla on Saturday โ€“ failed to produce the points on his debut. What was noticeable is that Kagawa was handed 90 minutes โ€“ perhaps a sign of his managerโ€™s faith, with Welbeck, Nani and Tom Cleverley the men to make way when Ferguson sent on the subs. At 8.5, heโ€™s the lowest priced of United attacking midfielders and, with Antonio Valencia featuring at right-back last night, Kagawa looks a promising Fantasy prospect with (FUL, sot, WIG) to follow despite last night’s frustrating blank.

Robin Van Persie
Handed a substitute role midway through the second-half after Ferguson chose to field Wayne Rooney as a lone striker, the Dutchman had an anonymous debut. The Fantasy conundrum between the pair was, if anything, exacerbated by last nightโ€™s viewing โ€“ United maintained the 4-2-3-1 formation upon Van Persieโ€™s arrival, with the two forwards both taking it in turns to drop deeper and drift out wide as the visitors chased the game. Intriguingly, Van Persie was immediately handed corners from the right hand side – Nani retained the left side, though Rooney took over after the Portuguese man was withdrawn. With the above-mentioned three games to follow, many will still be ready to gamble ahead of the weekend โ€“ letโ€™s hope Fergusonโ€™s Friday morning press conference is a little more revealing than usual. Post-match, the United boss was a little critical of his other players, suggesting he expects better service for the Dutchman in order for United to prosper:

We were a wee bit disappointing in terms of finishing off the approach play we had. We played around him (Van Persie) too much, we didn’t show enough penetration. With Robin in your team you know you want to use his ability against centre-backs in situations he is very good at – but we didn’t use him enough.

Really wouldn't lose Cuellar particularly given the same boring Sunderland turned up and ground out a CS at Emirates. Swansea did concede a lot of shots against much inferior opposition and if pushed I'd be slightly more comfortable downgrading Williams to the likes of Wilson.

Hey guys, just notice that Tevez's price went up and Auguero's amy go time some time soon? In any event, I was thinking about the following changes:

Augero --> Tevez (no pt hit) - but I will have no United coverage besides DDG for the coming week

    OR

Tarrabt --> 5 or 5.5 mid and Aguero --> Rooney

Whether Torres or Lampard do well or not tonight, I don't see the point in getting rid of em when they have a decent fixture against Newcastle coming up. Any thought would be much appreciated

Na I won't write off the Norwich defence just yet. Bassong and Turner could bolster the back line and once the team become more familiar with how Houghton wants to play they should improve. In no rush to get one though if at all.

Currently thinking Demel/McCartney over Clyne but 4-5 GW's are needed to make that decision. Silly to make your mind up after 1 game.

ofcourse, but you can only have 2 strikers not 4. I am using the formations available to me to make the best defence and attacking only teams and see which comes out on top.

they don't need to score more as they are wayyyyyyy cheaper. for instance, if rooney scores 180 points and baines 170, you'd be stupid not to get baines + a cheaper forward just because 'rooney scores more'.

I just got Aguero out... bringing him back in a couple of weeks would be annoying, but if he's 11.2m by then I'd be reasonably happy.

Right. Whilst this will obviously change, over the next few GWs I think I need to bring in Messrs RVP, Cazorla, Graham, Vertonghen (if he gets starts) and Baines.

What order do you reckon I should do these in, and is there a time when it could be worth a hit. Current thinking

GW2: Torres > RVP or Pog > Graham or maybe both
    GW3: Ivanovic > Baines
    GW4: Mata > Cazorla
    GW5: Zabaleta > Vertonghen

Actually, just checked that, and I'd be 0.5m short. Guess Vert could become another Tottenham defender, as don't want the Zab rotation risk once Micah is fit again. What do people think of these as potential plans?

Will depend what happens GW3. Last time in GW3 Dzeko, Young and Rooney all went crazy, so there was good money to be made. If its a quiet GW, there might not be as much movement. All depends on the stae of your team at that point too.

I've certainly earmarked GW4 as a potential WC time, but no means certain yet.

Wondering whether to wildcard already. I'm not happy with my current bunch. Defence needs upgrading, 3 chelsea players and a reading player with no fixture in GW3 - £2m in the bank.

    My current team:

    Begovic, Jaaskalinen
    Kaboul, Williams, McCartney, Barnett, Hangeland
    Valencia, Guthrie, Ramires, Hazard, Sessegnon
    Aguero, Torres, Graham

Got 2.0m in the bank Could do Aguero - Tevez and Ramires - Bale. Although even after that my team doesn't look the strongest.

    Or wildcard to this team:

    Jaaskalinen, Schwarzer
A Cole, Lescott, McCartney, Fonte, Williams
Kagawa, Bale, El Ahmadi, Yaya Toure, Larsson
    Tevez, Torres, Graham

    Would still have £2.4 left.

Opinions appreciated before I do anything silly.

    Thank you!

I would transfer out Torres + Ramires for GW 3. Hazard is enough for Chelsea I reckon. Keep Guthrie as a cheapy midfielder.
I like the upgrade to Lescott to give you City coverage. Not every week that City will concede 2 goals at home.

You get a transfer in GW3. Could be a time for a Torres > RVP/Rooney. Admittedly, that leaves you a bit nervous looking at your bench, but you'd be able to play a 5-2-3.

I guess it could be worth a -4 to swap Ramires out too to get a bit more cover, and stop you having to play 5 defenders.

Zab then clyne for me. Liverpool probably won't be as poor as they were against us, but I don't see them scoring for fun...

right current transfers running through my head after a decent start

    A) Terry to Baines
    B) Terry to Vidic (was the plan before a ball was kicked)
    C) Yaya to McClean
    D) Torres to Jelavic
    E) Save the transfer

    currently leaning towards E

    Team is

    Green

    Terry/Cuellar/Vertonghen

    Bale (C)/Valencia/Yaya/Michu/Maloney

    Torres/Tevez

    Bench Schwarzer/Petric/Ridgewell/Gunter

    any advice?

    Cheers

I think you should save. This gives you the option to have an extra GW and evaluate strengths/weaknesses of your team. I think it looks personally. But you will want either Terry or Torres out I guess for GW3.
I say, save it, use 2 for GW3 to get the 2 CFC players out ?

Very true. I still don't see Torres as a long term option.
I have him (C) this week as a gamle because he has a double GW, but he's gone for GW3. This frees up funds to upgrade other part of my team. But I do like your team otherwise

I've seen a few on here saying chelsea have an easy game on saturday, due to us playing in europe on thursday. Be aware that there will likely be no more than 1-2 players first team players in the team on thursday, so actually we will be better rested than chelsea who play on wednesday. Oh yeah, and we beat them at stamford bridge last season and finished above them in the league!!

Yeah it will be a tough game for Chelsea. Papiss will be back to do the same sort of damage as last season.

Judging by the Spurs game, Newcastle will be just as hard to score against as last season and just as likely to power through your defence. Very strong team that could bully the Chelsea midfielders a bit, plus I don't fancy Torres to get the better of Coloccini (if fit) and Steven Taylor.

Chelsea is twice as deep dough, if you guys get an injury or two(or tired players) than you are fecked. It is not an easy fixture, but not too hard as well IMO.

The 4-4-2 will be Newcastle's undoing away from home for most of this season, imo.

They will be completely overrun and take a few hammerings. Pardew needs to switch it to a 4-5-1/4-3-3 on the road, but I doubt he will.
