As the transfer window edges a little nearer to closing, David Moyes continued to bolster Everton’s attacking options with the purchase of Belgian international Kevin Mirallas from Olympiacos on a four- year contract. The 24-year old arrives at Goodison Park in a deal rumoured to be around £5m and is the Toffees’ third acquisition of the summer, following the signings of Steven Pienaar and Steven Naismith:

David Moyes has wasted little time in his quest to re-invest the cash acquired for the sale of Jack Rodwell to Man City and the Everton boss was delighted to clinch Mirallas’ signature after a host of clubs were linked with a move for the player. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the move, Moyes explained:

We’re really pleased to get Kevin. He’ll hopefully add a bit of quality to the squad, give us some more options and we need him. We’ve lost one of two players so we’re delighted to get Kevin in.

The Statistics

Mirallas’ career began as a youth in his native country with Standard Liege but he was snapped up by French outfit Lille before he could make a single first-team appearance. Mirallas struggled to establish himself as a regular over his four seasons at the Ligue 1 club, however, and, although he finally nailed down a place in his final campaign, a return of 10 goals and seven assists in 76 appearances saw him sold to St Etienne in the summer of 2008.

The Belgian continued to struggle during his time in France, however; over two campaigns with “Les Verts” he managed a mere three goals and three assists in 53 league matches before making his way to Olympiacos on a one-year loan deal. Mirallas was an instant impact in his new surroundings –14 goals and a trio of assists in 27 games saw him fire the club to the league title and earn a permanent contract at the Greek outfit. Last term he was even more clinical, with 20 goals and seven assists in 25 matches helping the club retain the title. Mirallas has represented his country at every level from Under 16 to Under 21 and has scored five times in 26 appearances for the Belgian senior side.

The Prospects

There’s no doubt Mirallas will add a much-need attacking threat to a Toffees side that struggled to find the net last term until the January arrival of Nikica Jelavic from Glasgow Rangers. His versatility could be key in assessing the 6 foot Belgian’s game time – he can play on either wing, in “the hole” or also lead the line. At the moment, it’s a case of “wait and see” and bearing in mind he was signed after the deadline to be eligible for last night’s United match, we could see our first glimpse at the weekend away to Villa.

Intriguingly, Mirallas was used to great effect as an inverted winger on the left by Olympiacos, cutting inside on to his favoured right foot to devastating effect. Such a move could see Pienaar used more centrally – it’s worth noting that the South African briefly featured in “the hole” in a pre-season match and with Moyes keen to ease Naismith back into fitness after the summer signing spent much of last season injured at Rangers, it’s certainly an option. Alternatively, Mirallas could tuck in behind Jelavic in Moyes’ preferred 4-5-1 – a move which would see compatriot Marouane Fellaini drop into a deeper role – or he could move to the right, where his arrival could well impact on the likes of Leon Osman.

Mirallas has yet to be added to any of the Fantasy games, with his classification key to how we assess him. A price between 6.5 and 7.5 perhaps seems the likeliest of outcomes in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) regardless of classification, though with Pienaar at 6.5 and Jelavic 8.5, he’ll face a struggle to oust either in many a Fantasy managers’ estimations.

With their home clash against United now out the way, Everton now face a tricky schedule that sees them hit the road in five of the next seven Gameweeks. Bearing in mind that one of their two home matches is against Newcastle, Fantasy managers will be content to keep their distance, holding back any major investment in Mirallas until his place within Moyes’ plans becomes far more apparent.

    Rio Ferdinand to who?
    my team
    Hart, Gazziniga
    Vidic,Zab,Jose E, R.Ferdinand, (Clyne)
    Mata,Bale,Allen,(Maloney,Noble)
    Torres,Tevez, Petric

for next week i am goin Vidic(C)
and playing Maloney and Noble over Jose E and Allen
    (due to fixtures)
i have clynne who could potentially play over maloney and or R.Ferdinand

i was thinking i could use this week to cash Rio in for Demel or a 4mil def
and then next week upgrade one of my 3 cheaper mids to Barfa

or Ferdinand < Walker for spurs def coverage though i don't like AVB defensively
    other picks i thought about
Cuellar, McCartney(to be benched/considered with Clynne), Hangeland(to be benched and used the next week) Jenkinson/Mertersaker though i think they are both sh1te and neither one would be nailed on (Kos if he's back) or Distin/Jag if they are nailed on because they was awesome vs United (Distin preferably)
or other i am open to suggestions

Been out of the fantasy football loop for a few days due to being too scared to look at my team after a horrendous opening GW, so apologies if this has already been done to death:

I was wondering whether there's any consensus on when Aguero is due to drop in price? Tonight? Got cash for RVP/Rooney but would prefer to delay making a choice today as I'm really not sure who's a better pick at the moment.

Not 'protected,' his threshold just got bumped:

Q: Does this mean the player is protected from any price drop?
A: NO – absolutely not and this is a major mistake many people make. Anyone who is flagged will still be able to increase and decrease in value. The increase NTI target stays the same. However the NTO Threshold for a price drop is approximately 2.5 times greater than the usual Threshold for price drops.

Q: So if a player’s NTO Threshold was 40,000, it’s now going to be 2.5 times greater than that when they are flagged – so 100,000?
        A: Correct

Q: So what is protection all about?
A: If a player is red or yellow flagged for 2 days or more, once their (i) icon goes back to grey, they are protected for 8 days.

I have no doubt he will be in the top 10, probably 5, scoring midfielders in FPL terms this season. But I think a little too much faith is being put in him given Siggy or VDV could also be scoring. The obvious benefit is we know that Bale will play. But that is a lot of games without a goal for a 9.5m player

Been out of touch a bit with things since the weekend. As a Aguero owner I am not seeing anything conclusive on his injury and I've not had a chance to monitor his price rise on fiso (but I saw that he'd risen to 9.1 this morning).

Like Pork Pie above I too have been out of the loop, so apologies for introducing any repetition but, I would like to know what Kun owners on here are doing?. Is now time to jump ship to Tevez, or is it a sit tight and wait?

Oh, just to add complexity I have Torres and have already used my ft on Ramires>Michu

Thanks for the advice. What odds of a further price rise do you think? I am kind of thinking I am going to hav to take a hit sooner or later, so I am thinking sooner may be the bast strategy to beat further price rises

See above for an excellent post by the shadow.

His price will drop but the high ownership and someimtes abrupt resettings back to zero made him quite bulletproof last year - always taking WAY more transfers to drop than the numbers would suggest. I've dumped him, but remembered this as soon as I did it (dammit!) and am quite regretful I did not wait the extra day or two to know for sure.

New season, same old problems 🙂

I'd honestly wait at least until later this week.

FPL and The Kun's price have been locked in a might love affair all last season and now this.

Takes A LOT of transfers out to do it. (mind you, that's what's happening).

I think everton have got a good set of fixtures rather than trickey - agreed they are away games but it's games they should probably be winning (Villa A, West Brom A, Southampton H and Wigan A)

I think a good differential amongst Evertons ranks is Gibson - on some set pices and a great striker of the ball from distance. With Rodwell departing he should see more nailed on game time. At 5 mil and 0.8% of ownership so far he looks an interesting prospect!
