[sbu_large_image] The Stock Check

The flag stayed down to allow Fernando Torres to deliver on a night that saw Hazard sparkle again. Brave Reading went home with nothing but put up a fight as their budget options confirmed their potential. Let’s check the stock…

On the Up

Eden Hazard
Five assists marks a remarkable start to Hazard’s Fantasy season and already confirms him as a major Fantasy asset. He’s mesmerising skill and pace, combined with the freedom to join the attack from all areas, has thrust Hazard to the top of our midfield shopping list – once the Gameweek 3 blank has passed of course.

Frank Lampard
Lampard may well rely on spot-kicks for returns but with Hazard in the side, he looks set to get plenty of them. The Belgian’s tricky feet are drawing fouls, seemingly handing Chelsea deadballs and penalties aplenty.

Fernando Torres
Torres left it late but he eventually delivered on the captaincy with a goal that just about justified the faith shown in him. We will still look to Hazard and wonder what might have been, while Robin Van Persie still looks ridiculously tempting for those with the funds to wave goodbye to El Nino for the weekend. It’s still a big decision for those with cracks elsewhere and with bandwagons rolling.

Pavel Pogrebnyak
The Russian delivered on his budget promise with a superb glancing header to bring Reading on terms. Pogrebnyak looks destined to lead the line home and away for the Royals and, as we’ve stressed all through the pre-season, offers a superb third striker option for those looking to reserve funds.

Danny Guthrie
Talking of budget options, Reading look to have a mix of them. The widemen Jobi McAnuff and Gareth McClearly put in strong displays again but it will be Guthrie, playing up in support of the lone striker and at just 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game, that will rouse interest.

Going Down

Petr Cech
A calamitous error for Reading’s second goal drew visible frustration from manager Roberto Di Matteo and will give cause concern for those holding Chelsea defenders. We’ve seen his confidence waver in previous seasons. Worrying.

Juan Mata
While Hazard, Lampard and Torres delivered returns, Mata was the odd one out, offering two blanks over the double Gameweek. We know that Di Matteo is planning a rest for the playmaker, while it’s doubtful that this will start early against Newcastle, it’s not out of the question given the jaded performances so far.

Adam Le Fondre
Brian McDermot started tonight’s game in a 4-5-1, pushing Guthrie up to support Pogrebnyak. Le Fondre dropped to the bench then and will presumably be at risk when Reading are on the road.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Would u lot prefer to have Lennon and Vorm or DDG and Fellaini?? Certainly fixtures would indicate the former, but.....

Wouldn't look into Fellainis performance the other night, I doubt he will play that far up the pitch throughout the season. Pienaar is still the best bet for an Everton mid.

Not really imo. Def not for a hit. Save transfer and reasses united attacking situation after next week. I still don't think nzog is a bad option.

My thoughts on Chelsea v Reading:

    Teams:
Reading played a textbook 4-5-1 with 3 central midfielders to stifle midfield passing (ironically reminiscent of Chelsea v Barca). Chelsea's 4-2-3-1 actually struggled to break through for long periods as Reading's strategy was working in the middle and they couldn't get enough width to break it. The big battle of this game was on the flanks between Reading's wingers who weren't particularly suited to defending, and Chelsea's fullbacks who were trying to bomb on and provide the width. In the end, though the latter won, the game turned on Reading's goalie error when they were leading 2-1 and sitting far too deep. The next (offside) Chelsea goal came from width (Cole's assist). The final goal also developed down the wing, though obviously it was a bizarre one with no goalkeeper present.

    Individuals:
Ivanovic v Cole: Just as the members stats said, basically. Ivanovic was further forward and he drifted more central. Unlike Cole, he was happy to play on the inside when interchanging with the wide midfielders. Might have been a bit of shock when you saw Hazard cut the ball inside to Ivanovic to score the final goal. Hard to comment on the defensive performances; the Reading goals came from both flanks, though they weren't straightforward chances so it's hard to assign fault.

Mata v Hazard: It's very clear that Hazard is playing furthest forward. Mata is playing much deeper than you'd think when he is described as playing in the hole. He can play deep as Ramires and far behind Hazard. His job in the team is primarily to sustain the passing, not to score or assist, and he may well suffer from assist-the-assister syndrome (technically this was the case for Cahill's goal as he passed to Hazard who passed to Cahill - it was hardly a goalscoring opportunity though). Mata did have two shots off target when Reading sat deep, though in both cases he was still behind multiple Chelsea players. One of his few points opportunities was his excellent cross from a free kick, but if you wanted someone for set pieces it would be Lamps. Basically, I think Mata is this year's Modric.

Torres: Torres simply didn't get good service, and I think that's as much something to worry about as his supposed flakiness. He was massively outnumbered as the lone forward with not only two center backs but three central midfielders surrounding him. Chelsea's midfield is not actually built as many of us expected - to feed Torres with through balls. The midfielders get forward and try to have a go themselves, with most of the crosses coming from overlapping fullbacks, one of which Torres scored from. Torres often is trying to create for the midfielders instead of vice versa, holding up play and drifting wide. The sad thing is that Torres craves through balls - the perfect example is the one Ramires played to him in the Community Shield. The only player I see as consistently able to deliver these is Mata, and he's way too deep.

Yeah I fancy his movement wasn't that great, it was like he was caught in two minds between scoring and creating, which is pretty understandable given he wasn't getting much service. Am selling like the rest of you 😉

So was I, it was consistent with what one of the Reading players said in an interview - they were going there to score and win, the way Swansea and Norwich played last year. He wasn't going to take a point!

Yep, it pretty much sealed their fate bringing those two attacking players on.

Nice Post, I agree with most of the analysis.

I do though think that Pog's goal was more due to the fault of Terry and Cole than anyone else. These defensive frailties from the old generation may be worrying for clean sheets. Although i certainly think that leaves Ivanovic as by far the best option. His attacking returns could well make up for the lacking defense IMO.

Well, I am 700k places higher than I was at this stage last season! Just seen the baps, goes to show that assists don't count for much. Don't understand why some were sure that Hazard would get them all. Torres(c) certainly deserved his bonus!

Torres and Guthrie really saved my gw, Finished above the average and made up almost 1m ranks today.

The same way he did against Everton, but with RVP instead of Rooney...

The front 3 were fluid. Welbeck played out wide but he was the one who was played through twice by Kagawa.

Welbeck can play there, Rooney can't.
