There’s two tasty fixtures on the bill today, as the Dugout Discussion opens for the second installment of Gameweek two. We start at the Britannia Stadium as Stoke City host Arsenal, and the team news is in…

Stoke XI: Begovic, Wilkinson, Huth, Shawcross, Wilson, Pennant, Cameron, Whelan, Kightly, Walters, Crouch.

Arsenal XI: Mannone, Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Gibbs, Diaby, Arteta, Podolski, Cazorla, Gervinho, Giroud.

Having been cleared to play, new signing Geoff Cameron makes his Potters debut in midfield. The visitors are without Wojciech Szczesnydue to a rib injury, so Vito Mannone is between the sticks. There’s a first league start for Olivier Giroud, with Theo Walcott the player making way.

Following that game we move to Anfield, where bottom of the league Liverpool welcome the visit of the Premier League champions Manchester City.

The Dugout Discussion chatroom is the place to follow all the action as it unfolds, and it can be accessed right here.

Well yes, we're all part Neanderthal thanks to interbreeding.

      Also:
"Neanderthal cranial capacity is thought to have been as large as that of modern humans, perhaps larger, indicating that their brain size may have been comparable, or larger, as well. In 2008, a group of scientists created a study using three-dimensional computer-assisted reconstructions of Neanderthal infants based on fossils found in Russia and Syria. The study showed Neanderthal and modern human brains were the same size at birth, but by adulthood, the Neanderthal brain was larger than the modern human brain. They were much stronger than modern humans, having particularly strong arms and hands. Males stood 164–168 cm (65–66 in) and females about 152–156 cm (60–61 in) tall."

So all the Stoke fans/players have bigger brains than us? 😉

Brain size has no connection to intelligence.

        Your point is invalid.

What part did I say they were more intelligent?

Also, since you know so much on this subject you should know that it is a highly argued topic http://health.howstuffworks.com/human-body/systems/nervous-system/brain-size2.htm A quote from this article for example "In 2005, psychologist Michael McDaniel evaluated studies that used brain-imaging and standard intelligence tests and found that unequivocally, bigger brains correlated with smarter people" Still a topic of massive debate.

Well that was the natural conclusion. And yes it's debatable, but there's absoloutely no remotely demonstrable correlation.

Ah conclusions conclusions, perhaps I implied it as a joke!

No correlation yet as they're still examining a lot of the different growth mechanisms of the brain but so far there are a lot of areas researching into specific zones of the brain and the effect of them being enlarged/reduced. A lot of different exams have shown enlarged areas of the brain are present in people of higher intelligence but obviously this can't be taken as anything more than a pint of interest. So we can't say either way yet.

Well, actually, similarities between Homo Sapien and Neanderthal DNA are now thought to be from a shared ancestor as opposed to interbreeding.

        http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-19250778

And while they may have had larger brain capacity, they did not have the ability to communicate verbally which probably didn't help when space became an issue and the two species decided to duke it out. Probably where human creation myths of gods overthrowing giants for world domination that are so prolific in Indo-Eurasia originated.

I've heard of both theories, the common ancestor one being the "Mitochondrial Eve" concept if I remember correctly. The interbreeding theory is more based on the migration of Homo Sapiens towards Europe and the further movement of Homo Neanderthalensis into Europe and India.

As for the ability to communicate verbally, they did have language as far as research can find. http://ebbolles.typepad.com/babels_dawn/2008/03/neanderthals--1.html
          http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2009/03/did-neanderthal.html

And here's one with arguments for both views on it http://sjohn30.tripod.com/id1.html

As far as myth goes, their extinction is so far back that it's a difficult one to say really. It's a fascinating area though.

If you read the BBC article, they are saying there is no Neanderthal DNA in humans, not so much to do with mitochondrial Eve, just that we both descended from a common ancestor such as Heidelbergensis before either species left Africa. Neanderthal would have been around long before the evolution of humans and so would have only been populating Europe by the time our ancestors left Africa. Interesting that they may have been able to vocalise, I have always read that they would have been restricted to sign language. Must have been a crazy time, there would have been a few different species of upright apes.

    HAZARDOUS SAYS:
Tricky after this week to decide which changes to make. This is my current squad:
    Friedel (green)
    Clichy a.ferdinand McCartney cuellar Hughes
    Michu bale hazard Nasri (ramires)
    Graham Tevez Torres
With no united cover, I feel it’s time to bring someone in, it’s gonna be a 3 change minimum, and I’m willing to take the hits
    A) Torres bale ramires – Rvp BenArfa Jarvis/maloney
    B) Ferdinand bale ramires – rafael kagawa a.johnson/pienaar/fellaini/Lennon
I’d be very grateful if anyone has any other suggestions??

A guy affiliated with the FPL site told me if RVP had been with ManU before they priced the players in the game, he would have been priced at 12 mil, the same as Rooney. His 13 mil valuation was based on him being he center of influence Arsenal and getting most of the bps. LOL at those making room in their budgets to get RVP. Too funny.

It's not relevant what a 'guy affiliated with the FPL site' says they might have priced some player at. The player has a price. If you like it: buy, if not: then don't. Simples.

Personally, I reckon 13m is about fair value. If he's not scoring 9 points a week, you'd be pretty aggrieved and if he does it's meh. And if he goes nuts - great. Just like any other part of your team.

The concentration of value in one player is helpful for captaincy choice, but damaging for squad flexibility. By the time Rooney comes back, the calculus might be different.

His valuation was a derivative of his influence at Arsenal, not sharing points with other talented players at United. Just like Adam Johnson's valuation was based on playing for champion Man City, not playing at a mid table club.

That's right, they're missing the final pass, or that little bit of creativity to create a chance where a final pass can happen. I don't doubt them on scoring once that happens. Stoke have always been difficult, defensively.

I would normally say Pienaar but Fellaini seems to be getting involved in the goals more this season. Still think Pienaar edges it.

Robin Van Persie is 90% awesome. How can anyone quibble about his 13m price tag? He'll be 14m or thereabouts by the end of the season.

Kagawa is 4.5m less than RVP. Torres could also come good this season, RVP will be top scorer but it doesn't justify 13m. Just my opinion.

Lets be honest, RVP owners have got a huge boost in the Rooney Injury, otherwise there was no justification for such heavy spending. I don't think there'd be such a rush to get him had Rooney not been injured. It's just everyone salivating over his lone striker role for the next few weeks.

No, RVP was always going to be the main man for United this season. Think Ruud Van Nostrilbooy, but better!
