With the transfer window finally behind us, it’s back to matters on the pitch as Gameweek three gets underway. Due to Chelsea’s Super Cup participation, we’ve got just the nine fixtures to squeeze fantasy points out of, starting at Upton Park as West Ham host city rivals Fulham. The Dugout Discussion opens to see Andy Carroll make his West Ham debut…

West Ham XI: Jaaskelainen, Demel, Reid, Collins, O’Brien, Noble, Diame, Nolan, Vaz Te, Taylor, Carroll.

Fulham XI: Schwarzer, Riether, Hangeland, Hughes, Riise, Diarra, Sidwell, Richardson, Duff, Rodallega, Petric.

Deemed surplussed to requirements at Anfield, Andy Carroll makes an immediate start for the Hammers, at the expense of Carlton Cole.

Fulham have their own new big-name striker in Dimitar Berbatov, but have chosen to name the former Manchester United man on amongst the substitutes. There is a start however for Kieran Richardson, and Steve Sidwell comes in to fill the void left by Moussa Dembele.

There’s then five more Premier League games to enjoy, climaxing at the Etihad Stadium where there’s a repeat of the last season’s most memorable game, Manchester City versus Queen’s Park Rangers. The Dugout Discussion chatroom is the place follow all the action, and can be accessed right here.

    Just doing some math as Team value is quite a misleading measure

    Purchase Price of Team: 100.1
    Current Team Value: 102.5
    Current Sale Value: 101.0

    Now, its only useful if I can extract the value from the player because I will not have to repurchase him, so I should really exclude the season keepers
    Current Sale Value (excluding gains on season keepers Haz/RVP/Tev): 100.5

    Hence, realisable trading profit = 100.5-100.1 = 0.4 on paper, and a further 0.1 realised from Dyer

    Quite measily, especially when you consider its all attributable to 3 players:
    Michu (0.3)
    Petric (0.1)
    Dyer (traded for a 0.1 profit) spent on Baines post price rise (-0.1)

    Bottom line, Team value is great, but its the opportunity cost of NOT having a player, or loss of purchasing power due to player falls that is really important.
    Profiting from player rises will not add much value to your team.

      Yes.. 100% agree. Cost of cannot have a player or Loss of purchasing power are keys for my transfer decisions too.

        people who did not get on Tevez, RVP, HAz for instance early enough have done severe damage to their team value... because they missed out on cheaper prices.

        Thats assumign that they are the season keepers.

        Michu for me, is not

          I think Dyer plays really well. He created or involved in more dangerous changes than Michu. Alternatives for Swansea.

            How do you calculate Purchase Price of Team?
            Sum up Purchase Price of all players?

              P = sum of your purchase price of players
              C = Current value of players + cash

              Your team value as FPL states it is C
              But its a really useless measure

              More useful is S = sale value of all players + cash
              and really S should be adjusted for players you think you will keep all season

                your profit is S-P, (your realised profit from player trading is hidden in the cash balances)

                Optimising Team value (not FPLs measure, but your purchasing power) amounts to minimising P, either by buying players before they rise higher, or waiting to buy players after falls
                or
                maximising S, which means selling players before they drop, or selling players you do not think you will need/want in the future (repurchasing would hurt P), or selling a player who is not rising any longer in order to jump on a new wagon (does not help S, but helps P)

            agreed, given his price, he may be a season keeper option for a cheap place in the team.

            personally i think Nolan is the only player who fits that bill

            there are two many good 6-7mln mids i would like to rotate

              Yeah.. Nolan had a lot of scoring chances and he had the proven records too. He would be in my team stead of Noblem if I could reshuffle my money.

          That's my problem. I had rooney and kun when they got injured. I got tevez at 9.5 after rooney had fallen by .2 and kun had fallen by .3. If i'd started with tevez my team value would be nearly a million higher now

            came up with an obvious way to trade players like michu etc. once they get to 35-40% ownership, its time to sell. they cannot rise anymore.

            look at someone like yaya... thats a bandwagon that cannot go anywhere. he is owned by too many.

        Team liquidation value (sell all players)
        Team sale value (sell all players except season keepers)

          even with Guthrie, there is a cost there.

          im effectively short Guthrie right now, he is a target but ive parked my capital in Kac for the time being.

          Koshielny is similar (long term target, but i got williams until the fixtures tidy up)

          Im hoping Bale will be similar...

          This kind of trade reduces P, the purchased value of the team, and is more effective at building team value over the course of the seaosn
