With both UEFA World Cup qualifiers finishing goalless yesterday, it was left to the African Cup of Nations games to provide the goals. Here’s a brief update of the main protagonists, with a little injury news also thrown in:

Emmanuel Adebayor was on the score sheet for Togo in a 1-1 draw away to Gabon, while Victor Moses provided an assist in Nigeria’s 2-2 draw with Liberia. The Chelsea new boy was brought down in the box, allowing Ikechukwu Uche the chance to slot home from the spot.

Ivory Coast’s 4-2 win over Senegal saw a trio of domestic players produce the goods. Gervinho and Yaya Toure provided two assists apiece for the hosts, with the former also finding the net once, while Papiss Cisse returned an assist and a 25-yard headed goal.

In Other News
Sergio Aguero is set to fly back to City to continue treatment on his knee injury after he was ruled out of Argentina’s game with Peru on Tuesday. He took to twitter to admit:

It seems I won’t be able to make it to the Peru match – but the effort was still worth it. I’ll continue the recovery work at Manchester. Rooting for to the guys for the Peru match, I hope I can join them next time. Returning to @MCFC now to ready for the upcoming challenge.

Although Mancini has hoped Aguero will be fit for Gameweek 4, City face a real physical battle against Stoke at the Britannia. It’s perhaps the type of game the City boss will be happy to continue with Edin Dzeko alongside Carlos Tevez – the Bosnian has netted twice already for his side and bagged a hat-trick for his country in an 8-1 win over Liechtenstein on Friday.

Phil Jones is set to spend another spell on the sidelines after picking up a knee problem in training, according to the club’s official website:

Phil Jones has had surgery on a knee meniscus tear sustained in training that will require six to eight weeks of rehabilitation.

The former Blackburn man has yet to feature this season for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side due to a back problem and with Chris Smalling still unavailable, Rafael remains the club’s only natural right-back. Certainly, the Brazilian looks nailed-on to start the Gameweek 4 home clash against Wigan and could profit from the pair’s absence but, with United (liv, TOT, new) to follow, his frailty at the back may see Antonio Valencia come back into consideration in defence. The Ecuadorian got the nod for the Gameweek 1 trip to Everton and could well be asked to return to the role as Ferguson looks to tighten up a backline that has yet to return a single clean sheet.

Ashley Cole has been ruled out of England’s match with Ukraine on Tuesday, with the news casting concerns over his availability for Chelsea’s Gameweek 4 trip to QPR. The left-back also missed Friday night’s win in Moldova and with the FA also revealing John Terry continues to be a doubt with a twisted ankle, the defensive worries are starting to rack up for Roberto Di Matteo. Cole’s possible absence could hand Ryan Bertrand another chance in the first XI, while David Luiz and Gary Cahill may be set to continue the partnership that returned a clean sheet against Newcastle in Gameweek 3. Di Matteo also has new right-back Cesar Azpilicueta to consider – a start for the signing from Marseille could see Branislav Ivanovic move into a central position.

Hungary have revealed Zoltan Gera was subbed off at half-time in Friday’s win over Andorra after picking up an Achilles knock. The West Brom midfielder – who has scored in his only appearances so far this term – netted a spot-kick in the 5-0 triumph before making way and is expected to sit out Tuesday’s match with Holland as a precautionary measure.

Micah Richards is hoping to return to light training for City before the end of the month. The right-back has yet to feature this term after picking up an ankle injury while representing Great Britain in the Olympics, though reports suggest a first-team comeback could be on the cards for mid-October. The purchase of Maicon from Inter, however, seems tailor-made for City’s recent flirtation with a 3-5-2 and with Pablo Zabaleta also firmly in the frame, Richards faces a real struggle to establish himself within Roberto Mancini’s starting lineup.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I agree that he is one of the best, but not for fantasy. If you are not one of the people that think his role for Man City has changed a lot, and he will keep getting forward even once Silva is back. Than this small statistical example should help to reallize why I think he has overperformed.
              Yaya Toure

              GW1-3: Key passes made:9 Assists made:1
Normal rate of shot conversion: 2 shots per game, 10.7 shots per goal
Normal rate of key pass conversion: 1.7 key passes per game 9.066 key passes per assist

But you could've said this last season when looking at the year before, as his role last year was different to the year before; even at the end of last season he became more attacking than earlier in the season.

Furthermore, he could've just improved as an attacking player.

Since we're all bored I thought I'd liven things up with a discussion about..... Marc Wilson of Stoke!

Believe it or not he scores relatively high in terms of creativity and threat for a defender with good crossing and a decent amount of goal attempts in his first 3 games.

Is he likely to keep his place this season?

So, for those that are interested, I compared his stats from 2011 and 2012 seasons and found that most his attacking stats were substantially higher. He's attempting a lot more shots, putting in a lot more crosses (more accurately too).

So, on the basis of the first few games at least, Pulis is using him in a much more attacking role than last season. Could be good value at 4.5 when you consider how highly he ranks against other defenders with an attacking premium factored into their price.

It looks like Steve Clarke is rotating his forward line alot just now. Long has started every game and come off round about the hour mark. Odemwingie is their best striker but Fortune and Lukaku will still be rotated into the forward line which might frustrate you as an Odemwingie owner.

I didn't think Odem was rotated so far. He missed one game with a slight injury then came off the bench in the following game.

I think fully fit he is the one nailed on as he's playing wide rather than centrally and Dorrans isn't really a good back up for that position. The other spots in the front three they have two players for

If you'd a decent start, but worked out that playing your wildcard could get you a decent squad (of price risers and notable performers so far) would it be foolish not to pick Hazard...?

Was going to swap him in for Cazorla, but after the Gooner's last performance suggests the extra million looks better used elsewhere in the squad...

Surely Hazard can't continue racking up points in the manner he has...?

I was a bit bored so I used the next 6 ticker to work out who has the best fixtures over the forthcoming 6 week period (I think this is already available to members?)

The team with the easiest game was given '1' and the hardest '20'. Team with the lowest score after doing this for the next 6 has the 'best' fixtures.

Anyone care to guess who this is?

When Aguero is back fit, are most people doing Tevez -> Aguero, or sticking with Tevez, or getting both?

Aguero seems better value than Tevez given that he'll get more game time and penalties. However, Tevez still seems great value for money. Is getting them both too much, especially with RVP in the team? This is very tempting, plus Aguero/RVP captain rotation is orgasmic.

Why would he get more game time? Aguero is the main man at City, and was widely expected to be top scorer before his injury. Saying that, Tevez is fitter this season.

          Tevez = butcher's dog.
How many games did Aguero play 90 mins of last season? He might be the main man, but that doesn't necessarily translate to more points. Tevez is the workhorse, and City need him more than they need Aguero. (I'm not putting down aguero, he's a better footballer than me)

It seemed that when they played together, Tevez was always the one to come off first. by 'main man', I meant that he's their main goal threat and best player, so I'd imagine he'd play more minutes. Tevez also played deeper when they played together.

I'd like them both as I think they're both good value... would save getting Yaya in midfield, as they could quite easily beat their goal tally of 93 or whatever it was last season with Tevez around now.

It just seems better to wait for him to start playing; their prices will only get closer together until Aguero is back and scoring.

      Keeping Tevez.

Reliable home and away, unlike Kun who only shows up at home.

Someone said at the outset of the new season that Aguero basically shone last season in Tevez's absence. Once Tevez returned he was immediately back to his old ways. Tevez is the better player in my eyes.

I am keeping Tevez. Better value than Aguero. Mancini seems to have determined they are the twin strike partnership, although Balotelli won't be happy with that for long. No guarantee that Tevez will always be the first to be subbed.

Also, injuries have a nasty habit of recurring.

Is Aguero guaranteed to be on penalties? So many candidates at City - Balotelli (main taker), Tevez, Nasri, Barry, Milner all take a good penalty.

Am fully aware of that, at present Tevez has a 3 goal start, even as first striker the bookies don't seem to believe Aguero will get past Tevez in terms of goals. I believe this reflects a lack of confidence in Aguero, which I agree with. Tevez plays well away or at home, Aguero tends to blow hot and cold imo.
