Yesterday, we rolled out the first in a two-part series of Members articles focussing on team stats over the first three Gameweeks so far. Having assessed the performances from an attacking perspective, we turn our attentions to the men at the back, analysing a variety of key performance statistics from a defensive point of view:

Looks like nearly 100,000 players have got Jenkinson in, I wouldn't criticise you for having him from the start because it's turned out to be a bargain, but essentially these new buyers are getting a player for one match against Southampton, they have Man City away after that and Sagna is not far from returning. Plus he won't rise to 5.5 so there won't be any option of trading him like for like with Gibbs/Sagna. Is it just me or this a bit of a bad move as they'll have to transfer out a defender in only a matter of weeks.

I'm not sure it's guaranteed Sagna gets his place back when fit, and if a defence is performing they can keep out City, Chelsea or United.

Unlikely they are gonna keep out either of the 3 teams....Expect at-least one of the trio, to slot 3 past them.

Nomar. My grand plan at the start of the season was to only play Taarabt for the home games. I assumed he would be benched for the away games. He has a fantastic rotation with Boyce. So if he will play most home games, and do well, then I would keep him. What are the chances of him starting at home against chelsea? If he plays, and does ok, he shouldn't lose much value

Congested midfield at QPR now. Seriously, I'd cut my losses and sell now. There are other options out there who are more nailed on, have easier fixtures and aren't losing value.

File Taarabt under the same week one mistakes file as N'Zogbia and Noble, get rid and move on with the rest of your season.

Cheers for that. Might keep my eye on his value, and if it looks like he won't go down in value, and will play against chelsea, I might give him one more week to save me a hit. Then probably get rid next week!

Can anyone quickly lety me know when Hazard/Santi play there final internationals?

Also, Is it completely ludicrous to consider dropping RVP next gameweek? Had him since 13.0. I know he somewhat fixture proff but they are not great reading for Utd. Possibly Jelly in to free up a boat load of cash.

As tempting as all the cash is as you said rvp is pretty much fixture proof and if he stays fit and keeps banging them in you'll no doubt regret it. On the other side if his goals dry up or he gets rotated you'll feel like a smug genius so all in all I've no idea and I've been no help 🙂

I just wildcarded, I have all 4 – 5 million defenders at the moment with

Santi, HAzard, Pienaar, Ben Arfa, Michu

    Tevez, RVP, Lambert

was gonna do Pienaar-> Guthrie then Ridgewell - Baines but is he really worth it?!

Yes... I believe so, as u'll have benching issues soon enough, with plenty of points on the bench. Guthrie easy to bench, but decent enough to come in as cover. Baines or 1 big hitter at the back is comfort also, so i think it's a win - win.

I think of Baines as an extra attacking midfielder - having him invariably means a cheap MF/FW option (and therefore less flexibility) but means that you essentially have 8 attackers playing each week so he's worth it imo.

Anyone with a QPR insight on here? Will Taarabt play home games? I have no problem with him being benched for away games. He played the first home game, and then was benched the next two (away) games. Missing two games has led to him being shipped out by the bucket load and his price dropping by 0.3m.

If he will play this weekend at home to chelsea I will keep him.

There was a rumour that both he and Traore refused to go to Manchester when told they wouldn't be playing v Citeh that was fueled by neither being on the bench there.

However, it also turned out that Clint Hill wasn't on the bench and didn't travel either and no one said a peep about that being a problem.

I have no idea what to make of it quite frankly but it may well be that Granero continues to play in his place

Today's iteration of the WC team looks like this (opinions gratefully received):

    Jaask, Begovic
    Baines, Riise, Boyce, Cuellar, Gorkss
    Hazard, Cazorla, Michu, Maloney, Guthrie
    Tevez, Fletcher, RVP

As you can probably tell, I'm going for a heavy attacking bias, even in defence as I think planning for CSs almost always ends in disappointment and I like the idea of having at least 9 attacking players each GW. That said, I rate the defensive capabilities of at least 5 of my back 7.

Slightly concerned about the cheap 4th midifielder options but Maloney and Guthrie rotate decently and I figured one of those + an attacking defender is better than, most 6m MID + 4.5m defender combos (in fact, Maloney has better stats than most 6m MIDs anyway).

Would be great to have some thoughts on this - cheers!

Not if they get a penalty or Baines hoicks a couple of crosses onto Jelly's head. Baines doesn't need to keep a clean sheet to score decently, you know.

That's a great team Dufflinks. The only problem would be with Riise as Fulham kept more clean sheets away than they did at home last year. You'd have to be very selective when you played him, I think.

4 goals, 2 assists last season. Not worth 7.1 m when you can spread the money around a balanced defence. Gorkss, Boyce will concede. Fulham are leaking goals. Guthrie has definite potential but Maloney is a Celtic reject freetaker. Cazorla has never been a prolific goalscore and as many assists as lesser priced mids. He's not helped by Van Persies departure. A great player bu may not give a high FF return like Fabregas of old.Waiting for possible points from possible frees, corners, penaties is a fools errand.

one goal every 9.5 matches is actually worth it, it's the equivalent of 1 extra CS every 9.5 matches roughly. I also think Baines will be more productive this year because Everton have a better team and are more attacking now.

Everton have a better team this Season then last year. Jelly will be there for a full season, so will Pienaar. No Drenthe to disrupt things. Feliani looks like he might be able to take over the Timmy Cahil role that they missed last season.

I believe Baines have created the most chances in PL so far this season of all the players.

No reason why he can't have a 170pts season like a couple of years ago.

            Ok. I have Baines.

Just because he got 4 goals/2 assists last season doesn't mean he will again.
He got something like 5 goals/11 assists the season before, and so far has created more chances than any other player in the premier league this season.

His price if the rest of your defence is suspect is the issue. He could very well bang in 20 goals but the rest of your defence will let you down.

If he banged in 20 goals it wouldn't matter if the rest of your defence was Fabio Gunter Clyne and Demel...
anyway, what expensive defenders are going well so far? Ivanovic, yes, but he's at risk of rotation now. City? No thankyou, the only nailed on one is Kompany and watching them play he isn't worth 6M let alone 7.5. United? No...they look awful at the back and the only nailed on ones are 7M.
Dufflinks defence is well spent, however I don't agree with the personell (5M Wigan, 5.5M Fulham) it shows that you can have Baines + a balanced defence and a decent front 7.

How can you say his defence is wekl spent and then disagree with the personnel? Should have a Stoke, Newcastle or Swansea there for m. e point is you don't need an expensive defender if you save there and upgrade elsewhere.

Well spend as far as money is concerned, you're saying he will only be relying on Baines as a result of Baines being 7m and therefore weakening elsewhere, but in reality it's the people he has chosen with that money that 'may' let him down. You go on about Baines weakening the defence, but really it is Boyce and Riise weakening the defence, if he had, say...Ridgewell/Rangel/S.Taylor in there instead for the same price it would be fine.

How Arsenal's currently poor strikeforce because RVP left is past results is baffling. I see you're a great man for stats but not so much on football. Baines could be like Liverpool last season, loads of chances, shots on goal, they'll give him few FF points.

Have you watched Arsenal, or more importantly Cazorla, play?
Looking at Cazorla's stats in Spain is useless, he was played all over the midfield - for Arsenal he is the main man right behind the striker, and I'd put money on him scoring/assisting more than he ever did in Spain.
Of course Baines "could" be like Liverpool last season, but I still don't see your previous point about him not being worth 7m, when compared to other expensive defenders he looks the best shout.

Saw the Sunderland game. Cazora was class but let own by those up frn. So, as cass as he was his FF pts were poor. Cuellar I thought was brilliant, I digress. If Duff gets the likes of Wilson from Stoke, a Newcastle and/or a Swansea defender I think getting Baines is less risky cos them defenders are better.

Yeah Riise is a bit of a punt. The thinking is that the introduction of Richards on the left should free him up to attack more. Also, he had a lot of shots on goal last season, maybe unfortunate not to score at least one.

If you are going for 2 cheap midfield options I would seriously consider spending the cash to upgrade Fletcher in your front line to Torres. Downgrade Baines to to Gibbs and Riise to Hughes and reckon you'd be close to being able to do this.

I've no prob with people discussing it TW - genuinely.
Im not saying there should be rules as this is all our forum and people should post freely ,
But IMO UCl is putting people off posting here, this site was predominately created for Fpl and I'd prefer to keep it on those lines.
Would it be so wrong to have a link for UCl discussions ?

No offence but this pretty much happens every year when there's an Int break. People get bored of things to talk about, and the pages go so slow anyway. Don't see what the massive deal is when the comments will be back to normal as soon as FPL starts again.

The reason there is a lot of discussion for the UCL game at the moment is that:
      1) the game is just starting and people who play it are excited and want to get the best team in
      2) the international game has made the discussion regarding FPL scarce as most people have already settled on their team for GW4 and only people who have WCed are discussing here about price rises and potential point scorers...

Let GW4 come nearer and you will see the discussion revert back to FPL mostly with few comments on UCL...

Strong starting 11 with bad bench can be disadvantageous in the UCL game... With Manager Substitutions you can change players within a GW and in case you dont have anyone coming off the bench you are stuck in case someone has not performed...

At least make sure that your low priced benchers are starters in their teams so that you might get some points for a freak goal or a freak clean sheet...

If you had Al Habsi/Boyce and Jussi/Collins, would you double up on West Ham this week or play Al Habsi or Boyce despite the tough fixture to spread the risk? I'm tempted to play Boyce for the craic but Collins also has the attacking threat from corners. Would it be wise to play Al Habsi basing your choice on the fact that neither are all that likely to keep a CS but Al Habsi might get a ton of save points?

The way Man UTD defend at the back post someone should be able to get on the end of one of Bpyce's crosses so even when they concede a couple you'll still be getting 4pts (which is probably double what Collins will manage!)

i just keep having this lingering feeling with Bale that he'll burst in to life but with the run of fixtures he's had already, I can only see myself sticking with him for the next two GWs max (rdg, QPR)

      Kagawa-> Cazorla?

Seems like a bit of a luxury transfer.

      Cazorla (-)
-has two difficult fixtures after SOT(H)
-arsenal haven't been scoring many goals
-more important (maybe) bandwagons may emerge this week i.e. Spurs attacking players, Torres, Fletcher.. and thus saving a free transfer may be worth it to bring them into the team next week
      - arsenal will travel midweek to play montpellier(a); wenger may withdraw cazorla early? i highly doubt AW would rest him for southampton(h)

      Cazorla (+)
-is highly influential in arsenal's attack and has finally scored+assisted
-arsenal's 2-0 win may suggest that they are "getting into their groove" i.e. being more clinical, scoring goals
-after MCI(a) CHE(h) Cazorla has a very friendly run of fixtures
      - buying Cazorla at 9.0 means future savings if he rises higher by GW7

      Kagawa(-)
-had a poor game against southampton
      - had a poor game for Japan midweek
-will play two internationals this break, SAF may rest him or withdraw him early like before
      - has many competitors in midfield, and SAF has shown in the past to be unpredictable in the selection of his midfield

      Kagawa(+)
      - plays Wigan(h), may get enough time to score/assist
      - has scored previously, and despite not assisting as yet has created several chances
      - keeping him may mean a further price rise to 8.7, 0.1 selling profit..

I apologise for the long post..

All of these are reasonable points but I don't see why the more important bandwagons point only applies to Cazorla. Both have a good first fixture and then not so good for the next two - my main worry about Kagawa would be the flight back from Japan - SAF has a tendency to not over-exert his travellers, and he also seems to be happy to sub Kagawa off after 60 mins, so of the two I think he's a bigger risk.

I see it now - it's a 'save a transfer' point. I'd agree with the Smurf below - should only go wrong if the 'more important bandwagon' turns out to be Cazorla.

I kind of want a Tottenham player in my WCT, as crazy as that sounds
