A game of goals and controversy at Goodison Park brings Gameweek 4 to a conclusion. Here’s the Stock Check from the tonight’s tumultuous 2-2 stalemate…

On the Up

Leighton Baines
We could hardly have pushed the virtues of Baines any harder over the international break and the Everton left-back didn’t take long to demonstrate why. Linking superbly with Steven Pienaar, Baines covered himself in glory with a fine strike to cap another superb display.

Steven Pienaar
Two assists from the South African demonstrated his worth and effectiveness down the Everton left with Baines. Pienaar also threaded the pass for Victor Anichebe’s strike and was only denied further returns by the assistant’s flag. Significantly, despite strong returns from Marouanne Fellaini in the opening games, bonus for Pienaar would take him above the Belgian in the Fantasy Premier League rankings.

Demba Ba
The evening began with the Senegal striker on the timber, only for him to be introduced to turn the game in the second half. A rollercoaster evening for his 16% ownership that ended in confirmation that Ba is the man in form in the Newcastle frontline.

Going Down

Nikaca Jelavic
The Croatian crashed into a post early on and finally relented to the blow just before the break after suffering further knocks. Everton badly missed his influence in the second-half and David Moyes and Jelavic’s Fantasy owners will desperately hoping that he has escaped with a minor setback. We await the prognosis.

Papiss Cisse
Selected ahead of Ba to lead the line, Cisse was again overshadowed by his compatriot. His Fantasy owners will doubtless be twitching with frustration and mystified as to how Cisse’s strike rate has diminished so markedly given last season’s electric form.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

On the surface maybe but you're essentially taking out one def for another def in the same team. Plus transferring out Lambert who has a home tie next. It's not ideal.

Thoughts on this WC team? $0.2 in the bank.

    Jaask - Bego
    Barnett - Baines - Demel - Hughes - McAuley
    Bale - Pienaar - Hazard - Michu - Guthrie
    Podolski - RVP - Berba

    My team currently is:

    Friedel - Fed
    Fonte - Baines - Demel - Cueller - Lescott
    Kagawa - Pienaar - Hazard - Guthrie - Michu
    Tevez - Torres - Pog

                Sorry for the hijack ...

The WC team looks pretty good to me. Some have suggested that Fletcher may be better in the short term, as he might score better in away fixtures than Berbs ... so that might be worth a think. I'm not really sold on Podolski yet, but that's a personal choice and you might be right there.

I'm assuming there's some sort of rotation in that defense? I'm not really hip to all the fixtures for those players and how they match up. Can't argue with the GKs.

I see you don't rate City in the short term, or at least you don't want to mess with their squad rotation.

Pretty solid right now, imo. Good start.

A bit of talk on here about Pienaar getting the 3 bap's, surely this a long shot, though I hope it's correct. Baines conceding two might favour Pienaar but then surely Ba is worthy of all 3?

The bonuses are a nightmare to predict so I've held off, but I'd think

      Ba 2/3
      Baines 2/3
      Pienaar 1

Is the likeliest situation. Assists don't count for much in PPI is my impression, goals do, and Baines' defensive stats as well as work attacking on the left give him a shout of the 3 IMO

Yeah but Baines conceded 2 which works against him, I heard Granville say, if I remember correctly, that assists, contrary to popular belief actually do count for a bit it's just that in games of high scores generally those scorers win out. But with Baines being a defender not an attacker, his score would be dented unlike an attacker who wouldn't be affected by it.

True he takes some damage for the 2 goals. But from what I saw he made a decent number of blocks, clearances and tackles, plus a few things that looked suspiciously like dribbles, as well as a goal of course. Normally goalscoring defenders rake in the PPI. But maybe the 2 might be the difference between Ba getting max and Baines getting max.

I'm not so sure it will happen straight away. Nelson is in good form and seems to have had a massive effect on QPR's defensive organisation.

According to my calculations, 2,611 players have brought in Ba since the end of tonight's match.

    and 1,064 for Pienaar

Hardly Berbawagons but not bad for a few hour's work.

ICT index for Everton vs Newcastle:

    Pienaar 14.3
    Baines 13.5
    Ba 12.2

If this index is accurate then it should be 3,2,1. But we'll just have to wait and see......

Excuse my stupidity but why is my Gameweek1 score 50,000 places lower than my overall score?

Perhaps someone started GW 2 and is beating you? I'm not sure, just a guess. Mine is 13 places off.

I think it means 50,000 people who started in GW2 (or later??) managed a higher overall score. Seems unbelievable, but that's how luck, or unbelievable skill works.

I honestly can't get my head around it, I wish it could be explained but I'm so poor at maths/thinking about numbers/logic sometimes, also I'm pretty tired to be honest, oh well... 😀

It all depends on how the scores are 'bunched up' at your point level, as compared to others.

At player A's level, one point might equal 10 rank places movement, while at player B's level it might equal 10,000 places. Then there's transfers to factor in (equal points with more transfers = lower rank).

That does seem a hell of a lot given you're inside the top 300k. Must be some funky players (2nd teams) started in GW2.

Hey, thanks. My gig is to try and average out 55 points/week. I haven't had the greatest start but I'm hitting that mark pretty well. If so, things should improve as the weeks go by.

I appreciate the comment, though. Nice rank for yourself, there. 😛

Fiso have Berba, Foster and Reid to go up tonight.

In case anyone is thinking of a last minute transfer, I think you have a few mins left.

Plan made, now just need to stick to it.

Have enough to get in Berbatov for Graham next GW if I downgrade Rangel to Barnett (other 4.0 defenders welcome) - even if Berbs rises three times this week.

Will decide based on SWA v EVE whether to hang onto Rangel & Graham, and decide based on WIG v FUL whether Berbs is worth it.

Barring injuries, sounds like a decent plan.

Norwich have Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal after next weekend so I'd stay clear of Barnett unless you plan to keep him on the bench for the next 3.

What's the story on O'Brien? West Ham have a good run of fixtures.

Rangel has three home in the next four, and not really tough games either.

I think I shall hang on to him for those and maybe out for GW9. Lots of changes then for better/worse runs.

Yeah the home games are playing on my mind. May look elsewhere to find the extra 1.1 I need to bring in Berbatov/Fletcher, if I choose to - Kags, even Michu if Sunderland continue in the Villa vein. I suppose Boyce to a 3.9 is getting a bit excessive.
