A game of goals and controversy at Goodison Park brings Gameweek 4 to a conclusion. Hereโ€™s the Stock Check from the tonightโ€™s tumultuous 2-2 stalemate…

On the Up

Leighton Baines
We could hardly have pushed the virtues of Baines any harder over the international break and the Everton left-back didnโ€™t take long to demonstrate why. Linking superbly with Steven Pienaar, Baines covered himself in glory with a fine strike to cap another superb display.

Steven Pienaar
Two assists from the South African demonstrated his worth and effectiveness down the Everton left with Baines. Pienaar also threaded the pass for Victor Anichebe’s strike and was only denied further returns by the assistant’s flag. Significantly, despite strong returns from Marouanne Fellaini in the opening games, bonus for Pienaar would take him above the Belgian in the Fantasy Premier League rankings.

Demba Ba
The evening began with the Senegal striker on the timber, only for him to be introduced to turn the game in the second half. A rollercoaster evening for his 16% ownership that ended in confirmation that Ba is the man in form in the Newcastle frontline.

Going Down

Nikaca Jelavic
The Croatian crashed into a post early on and finally relented to the blow just before the break after suffering further knocks. Everton badly missed his influence in the second-half and David Moyes and Jelavicโ€™s Fantasy owners will desperately hoping that he has escaped with a minor setback. We await the prognosis.

Papiss Cisse
Selected ahead of Ba to lead the line, Cisse was again overshadowed by his compatriot. His Fantasy owners will doubtless be twitching with frustration and mystified as to how Cisseโ€™s strike rate has diminished so markedly given last season’s electric form.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

One of those questions is so easy to research yourself it's not true.

Will not be a regular enough starter. Goal was extremely flukey.

Watch out for an Evra injury, or a window where you need a player for a week or two (i.e. leading up to a wildcard) and he seems to be in favour.

What do you all think of this WC team. I know there is one or two risky players in there but it uses all my money.

    Begovic, Foster

    Baines, Gibbs, Demel, Nelson, Davies
    Hazard, Cazorla, Michu, Pienaar, Sterling
    RVP, Tevez, Berbatov

    0.0 left.

Fair enough. I personally have no problem with doubling up. But if you think about it, after the next couple of games, begovic would play most of the games, and you are rotating demel as a 3, so you would only play them together in their plum home fixtures, and they have already proven they can keep cleanies in those!

something to think about for sure. Although I stupidly sold Jussi after cashing in on his rise yesterday. Should have held off getting Begovic. Having to reverse my plan and pay 0.1 extra would be a little annoying. Na, I think I will stick with foster and hope for the best with Nelson.

I disagree China - Demel is enough West Ham coverage at the back and Foster has good fixtures. Nelsen and Davies are both great value at the moment and also have good fixtures. I think Nelsen will continue to play and Davies can be traded out if he starts getting rested too often.

        I like it Ryan.

OK, after a lot of looking at budget options, checking which day people are playing, assessing captain options... I think I have a team ready for tomorrow's Champions League.

Team of each player is marked.

Mannone [ARS[ (Szczesny's out) Artur [BENFICA]
Alves [BARCA] Rafael [MUN] Acerbi [MILAN] Vidal [JUVE] Vida [ZAGREB]
Ozil [REAL] Cazorla [ARS] Kroos [BAYERN] Fayzulin [ZENIT] Sammir [ZAGREB]
Messi [BARCA] RVP [MUN] Mandzukic [BAYERN]

    Thoughts?

Nah you're probably right long term, but Robben is still injured and so in the short term that's shifted everybody along. Schweinsteiger and Gustavo play in central midfield and Kroos is pushed up into the hole. Need an exit plan though, to be fair, if it changes.

Yeah Robben was injured on international duty, so he's a big doubt for the game. Missed last two league games, though I don't know why he missed the first one which was before the international break.

Yeah that's the formation they played in the 6-1 win over Stuttgart: http://espnfc.com/uk/en/report/346394/report.html?soccernet=true&cc=5739

In the last game against Mainz Shaqiri replaced Ribery, don't know why again, but Ribery has been described as fit for the CL game.

      Love the front 3.

And Fayzulin and Hulk are competing for the same position. I think they've been sharing gametime for a couple of matches now. Swap him for Shirokov for safety or avoid Zenit altogether. They're doing pretty bad in the league.

Need another budget mid then, preferably 5.0 and below.

      Like you front 3.
Don't like Alves (expensive defender) and Acerbi (Milan's defence very shaky at the moment).
Strong midfield but Hulk will eventually put Fayzulin's spot at risk.
Would try to get Boateng for Bayern defense coverage.
Hazard for Özil, better form, easier fixtures.
Kroos is excellent value. Capable of scoring, assisting also set-piece taker while nailed on.
Would be concerned with Mandzukic once Gomez returns.

Thanks. Yeah getting Fayzulin out. I think the jury's a bit out on Hazard, get a distinct impression he has been bullying small teams so far, will see if he can take it to the next level before getting him. Open to getting someone else over Ozil, but feel I need Real attacking coverage and he's in the middle of it.

Alves is a deliberate attempt to effectively get a "bonus midfielder" into the team since he does so little defending. Acerbi seems good value at 4.5. Unfortunately I can't have more than 2 Bayern players so cannot get Boateng in without losing one of Kroos and Mandzukic.

It's a bit of fun, I'm tempted to go with these short term starters and WC if too many drop out.

After a few searches I can't find a return date. 6 weeks was mentioned in an article dated August 6, so could be at least a week perhaps? I doubt he'll just take Mandzukic's place immediately anyway, cos he'll need to get match fit etc and maybe even wait for Mandzukic to slip up.

The reason I mentioned Boateng is because clean sheets take extra-importance in UCL and work as differential. Strong teams will likely get one or two of them at home and at maybe another away but if you're keeping Alves you're good to go.
Understand your point on Hazard but I generally trust talented players in great competitions and I think he'll play all games and will be involved in goal plays. Also 2nd choice for penalties, which could come up with Lampard beeing rotated. The other player I'd suggest for Özil is Ribéry but we face the same dealema with Bayern's taken options.
Overall you're team is just fine.

Although to be fair to the lad, he is an attacking left sided player, who was playing right mid trying to defend everton's crazily good left flank, so it wasn't exactly easy for him!! Looks like I will have to get rid after all though!

Can't quite believe he started ahead of Ba. Which position did Barfa end up playing in?

Barfa was playing pretty much everywhere, but starting more to the left. If we are only going to play one forward, then I would prefer marveaux on the left to ba, but he seemed to be playing right mid. We should have played Jonas right mid from the start to help defend against Baines.

Also, he didn't seem to be attacking at all, so we would have been far better putting someone more solid in there. I would have much preferred he got into the team for norwich at home!!

    Team for next GW

    Foster

    Baines Demel Lescott

    Hazard Yaya Michu McClean

    Dimitar RVP Tevez

    Federici Guthtrie Cuellar and Clyne

Is it crazy to give the armband to Dimitar? Fulham will face Wigan

I think the point about Graham is that it seems to be his midfielders who are getting all the action.
Michu,Dyer,Routledge. So just not that many goals to go round, and with several cut price Strikers firing on all cylinders he's a bit surplus to requirements.
Got rid myself for Berba last week.
