We bring Gameweek 4 to a close with our usual synopsis, which this week finds us drooling over the class of an old favourite, reviving the fortunes of North London assets and berating the whims of the Old Trafford schemer.

The Player

There were other contenders but, as almost 80,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will testify, Dimitar Berbatov proves irresistible.

It wasn’t only his two goals that leads to his rise in prominence, or the fact that he was handed spot-kick duties. It’s not necessarily even his modest price tag that sparks the appeal. For me, it’s the nature of Berbatov’s performance against West Brom which proves so convincing.

Martin Jol knows exactly how to work with Berbatov’s talents. How to keep him in areas when he can taunt and punish opponents. The Bulgarian had plenty of the ball but didn’t have to come looking for it – Fulham kept him fed and allowed him to patrol the final third with menace. Berbatov duly returned two strikes and put in a shift that indicated he will be the fulcrum of the Cottagers’ attacking endeavours. Goals, assists and bonus points look assured – all should be delivered in quantities to more than justify his current price tag.

The Team

For the second week running, Arsenal impressed and hinted that they could yet play a part in the title race. In Fantasy terms, however, it was perhaps Tottenham’s victory at Reading that proved most significant.

Andre Villas-Boas has had his critics – a section of which seem so dismissive of his methods and appear to be willing him to fail following his demise at Stamford Bridge. The Spurs boss has bravely kept Emmanuel Adebayor’s ego in check, however, allowing Jermain Defoe to flourish and it was the latter’s goals that won the game and the plaudits at the Madejski.

Snuggled in the mid-price bracket, Defoe is a Fantasy asset that few will trust, given a streaky past and a lack of security. There’s little doubt that he is a striker in form, however, and a marksman of proven pedigree. A start against QPR looks certain and it will surely be Defoe who will carry the main threat to Mark Hughes’ men as Villas-Boas goes in search of a first home win since arriving at the Lane.

Equally, Fantasy managers will have be alerted to Gareth Bale’s strike – a first goal of the season that at last saw the Welshman deliver on his promise and price tag, offering a viable alternative to the current “template” midfields. Many have lost faith in Bale, as they have his manager, but there was plenty on show on Sunday to suggest that this is ill-advised.

The Talking Point

Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to rest Robin Van Persie to the bench for the home clash with Wigan rattled many. Not least me.

While some soothsayers called it correctly, I never really considered that United had quite found the gears to take on Wigan without Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and even the creativity of Shinji Kagawa. The 4-0 scoreline proved me wrong but, more significantly, gave Ferguson the comfort of knowing that such a gamble can be made again.

Wigan are, after all, no mugs and yet United brushed them aside in a stirring second-half; the “old spice” of Paul Scholes complimented by a sweeping new fragrance provided by Nick Powell.

The worry is that as United make progress in the Champions League and when Rooney finds form and fitness, the urge to rest Van Persie could flood through Ferguson’s veins more frequently. Far too frequently for the liking of the Dutchman’s ever-growing Fantasy ownership.

Seven days ago Van Persie graced this article and already looked untouchable. A Fantasy asset above all others. He still is just that but now, thanks to Ferguson’s slippery strategising, there are new question marks hanging over the value he can deliver, with a threat of rest and rotation blighting his potential prior to every European excursion. It’s unsettling.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

In the same boat but won't do it mate.

        Reasons:
        - Already had 4 players in that game. 3 Swans and 1 Everton. I sold Graham to decrease that risk, not going to increase it again. The pts are limited when u have half of your team in one game.

        - I have Hangeland on the bench is something happens. He plays Wig away,. Maybe I will be lucky and he will score a goal and come in 😛

        - I expect Lescott to start and they might earn a CS.

        - Swans will score this week 😉

        Enough?

Guys, I have had Santi from the start and have got a few points out of him. Everyone is looking to get him because of his great stats but I am considering dropping him.

Opinions would be welcome, is Santi Cazorla:-
    a) Modric like in assisting the assister, therefore a great player but not for FPL
    b) Good but better coverage with Podolski and/or Gervinho
    c) Brilliant and can't be missed, will hoover up points like Bale/Silva (when they used to be good)

Personally I am leaning towards (a) and (b) rather then (c).

Bale and Silva - although similar in their totals - arrived there in a different way. Silva was rarely explosive but ticked away with plenty of 5s and 7s over the course of the year. Bale was much more explosive but also had a lot more 2s.

Modric also wasn't quite a bad a fantasy pick as is made out - he did pick up a few goals and assists along the way but not enough to ever be a pick when others are firing.

I expect Santi to fall between Modric and Silva - consistent rarely explosive but not as high scoring as Silva was last season.

      a) He seems more advanced than Modric. He has had several shots so far. He is more like Kagawa imo.

      b) I don't believe this cover nonsense. If Cazorla is among the top 5 midfielders, you should have him. If at the same time Podolski, or Gerv (not likely imo), is among the top 3 forwards you should have him too.

      c) we will have to keep an eye on Hazard, Bale, Caz, Kagawa, Silva, Nasri. All of these will have their periods, the trick is not to use too many transfers switching them in and out like a revolving door.

Last night he was quite far back, will need to check the stats more deeply though.

Podolski is banging them in, Giroud looks scared to shoot so this does make Podolski the main man. Gerv looks extremally selfish on the ball so that makes him a great FPL player, he also did a lot of defensive work which might keep Wenger happy.

Agree on the last point, can see all those players hitting some form. I am on a WC now so am really considering Tevez out for Podolski and Cazorla out for Bale, extra money would allow Silva later.

Yeah, I was just going to say- it's a case of wait and see I think. I personally think he's got great potential. Someone raised an interesting point the other day about his relative lack of involvement in the 6-1: in a rout, creative players don't necessarily come to the fore, because they're not needed so much. I think in slightly tougher games hello do better, somewhat perversely, because Arsenal will need his guile to create something.

If I had to guess now I think he'll end up somewhere around Silver's points from last season, scoring a bit more, assisting a bit less. But at this stage that's just a hunch!

since i have baines and pienaar was thinking of shipping him out if he is a doubt.
    only question is for who?
1 - ba - not very comfortable with his game time
2 - berba - not crazy about fullham away form
3 - pappis - crazy looking at form i know, but he is due...with great fixtures...

    Fed / Jaask
    Lescott / Cole / Hange / Cuellar / Clyne
    Hazard / Michu / Dyer / Yaya / Guthrie
    Tevez / Petric / RVP

    £1.8m in the bank.

I need to ditch Petric, and I am really tempted by Ba. However, this would leave me 3 transfers away from being able to afford Cazorla if starts racking up points, and that would be Lescott + Cole > 2 x cheapies, Michu > Cazorla.

Should I play this safe, going Lambert instead, leaving more funds for future transfers?

Santi can wait until gw 7 or even 8. Dump Petric for who you think will score best over next couple of weeks.

I would consider downgrading a defender and then yaya-->Santi. Might save you a trade and 4 points?

Morning all. What is the general perception with the Man U defence at the moment? The reason I ask is Rafael, who I have owned from GW2 and has served me well during this short time. But Man U have a tricky set of fixtures coming up so I am tempted to trade Rafael in for Nelson to free up funds to do Noble>Pienaar. Thoughts?

Thats my sentiment also. Liverpool do look very poor this season. My fear is being outpriced for him (Rafael) in a few weeks time just like when I dropped Jones in the middle of his purple patch last season. That and adding his attacking threat also makes me think its probably the wrong move. Clark is also looking very tempting at 4.4 though, which would also let me do Noble>Pie....

I tend to agree he will more likely play than not.
