We bring Gameweek 4 to a close with our usual synopsis, which this week finds us drooling over the class of an old favourite, reviving the fortunes of North London assets and berating the whims of the Old Trafford schemer.

The Player

There were other contenders but, as almost 80,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will testify, Dimitar Berbatov proves irresistible.

It wasn’t only his two goals that leads to his rise in prominence, or the fact that he was handed spot-kick duties. It’s not necessarily even his modest price tag that sparks the appeal. For me, it’s the nature of Berbatov’s performance against West Brom which proves so convincing.

Martin Jol knows exactly how to work with Berbatov’s talents. How to keep him in areas when he can taunt and punish opponents. The Bulgarian had plenty of the ball but didn’t have to come looking for it – Fulham kept him fed and allowed him to patrol the final third with menace. Berbatov duly returned two strikes and put in a shift that indicated he will be the fulcrum of the Cottagers’ attacking endeavours. Goals, assists and bonus points look assured – all should be delivered in quantities to more than justify his current price tag.

The Team

For the second week running, Arsenal impressed and hinted that they could yet play a part in the title race. In Fantasy terms, however, it was perhaps Tottenham’s victory at Reading that proved most significant.

Andre Villas-Boas has had his critics – a section of which seem so dismissive of his methods and appear to be willing him to fail following his demise at Stamford Bridge. The Spurs boss has bravely kept Emmanuel Adebayor’s ego in check, however, allowing Jermain Defoe to flourish and it was the latter’s goals that won the game and the plaudits at the Madejski.

Snuggled in the mid-price bracket, Defoe is a Fantasy asset that few will trust, given a streaky past and a lack of security. There’s little doubt that he is a striker in form, however, and a marksman of proven pedigree. A start against QPR looks certain and it will surely be Defoe who will carry the main threat to Mark Hughes’ men as Villas-Boas goes in search of a first home win since arriving at the Lane.

Equally, Fantasy managers will have be alerted to Gareth Bale’s strike – a first goal of the season that at last saw the Welshman deliver on his promise and price tag, offering a viable alternative to the current “template†midfields. Many have lost faith in Bale, as they have his manager, but there was plenty on show on Sunday to suggest that this is ill-advised.

The Talking Point

Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to rest Robin Van Persie to the bench for the home clash with Wigan rattled many. Not least me.

While some soothsayers called it correctly, I never really considered that United had quite found the gears to take on Wigan without Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and even the creativity of Shinji Kagawa. The 4-0 scoreline proved me wrong but, more significantly, gave Ferguson the comfort of knowing that such a gamble can be made again.

Wigan are, after all, no mugs and yet United brushed them aside in a stirring second-half; the “old spice†of Paul Scholes complimented by a sweeping new fragrance provided by Nick Powell.

The worry is that as United make progress in the Champions League and when Rooney finds form and fitness, the urge to rest Van Persie could flood through Ferguson’s veins more frequently. Far too frequently for the liking of the Dutchman’s ever-growing Fantasy ownership.

Seven days ago Van Persie graced this article and already looked untouchable. A Fantasy asset above all others. He still is just that but now, thanks to Ferguson’s slippery strategising, there are new question marks hanging over the value he can deliver, with a threat of rest and rotation blighting his potential prior to every European excursion. It’s unsettling.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

SCENE: UCL Fantasy Towers, last week, office of Dirk Arrogantis, Manager

Erwin Diffidenza: Erm, sir, Mr Arrogantis, I think we need another server for the fantasy site, ‘cos we’re gonna get clobbered on Tuesday night . . .

Dirk Arrogantis: Oh do stop whinging Erwin, I have it all under control. We’ve done some focus groups and done a red light/green light exercise, not to mention a SWOT analysis, and our customers are happy with what we’re doing.

Erwin: Ok, so, yeah, it’s just that our site will crash if we get the kind of hits I expect . . .

Dirk: Yes, yes, yes, thanks Erwin, please just go tune up your hard disk or something. These fantasy geeks will take what we give them and like it—they’ll hit refresh for a few hours, bitch on their comment boards, send us some emails, and then be glued to our website as soon as it’s back up. Why should we waste money on an extra server when they will lap up whatever we give them no matter what? Thank god they will never just stop using the site in protest. [Chuckles superciliously]

Bit of a plug but anyone on here into their gambling? Specifically on the footy?

I write 3 tipping columns for Betfair's sports site betting.betfair and my most recent articles are linked from my username.

Been doing it over a year now and I'm showing a 23pt profit in 2012 so far (If you'd have stuck a tenner on each of my selections you'd be £230 richer).

Best way to finance a Petric > Ba transfer?

    Needing an extra 0.7m

    Jaask
    Cole - Vertonghen - Baines - Hangeland - Clyne
    Kagawa - Cazorla - Yaya - Bale - Noble
    Petric - Tevez - Graham

    A: Vertonghen 6.4 > Gallas 5.0 (fancy clean sheets in GW 5, 7 & 10, but reduced goal threat)

Def downgrade in defence, that much spent there is crippling the rest of your team.

All of your expensive defenders have cheaper alternatives within their teams, so just pick one and make the switch, even if it's just for the short term.

      Cole > Bertrand
      Vertonghen > Naughton
      Baines > Jagielka

So i've already done Torres to Berba this week but most of my team play one another so i'm left with a few decisions to make...

    JussiJ.
    Baines, Davies, Rafael.
    Hazard, Michu, Pienaar, Maloney.
    RVP, Tevez, Berba.

    Subs: Mignolet; Noble, Hughes, Clyne.

    1. Which two should I play?

    Rafael(liv), Davies(EVE), Clyne(AVL), Hughes(wig).

    2. Which one shall I bench?

    Michu(EVE), Pienaar(swa), Maloney(FUL), Noble(SUN)

    3. Who should I captain?

    Tevez(ARS), RVP(liv), Hazard(STO)

    Thanks guys. 😀

Lots of players we're unsure whether to get in or leave out because of worries about being nailed on for Prem games.

My opinion on the following OVER THE NEXT 3 WEEKS ONLY:

    NAILED ON

Gervinho - Being used in multiple attacking positions is often a sign you're an integral part of the manager's plans (see Podolski). Form is too good to drop right now, and Walcott is too one-dimensional and out in the cold due to perceived disloyalty.

Lennon - AVB seemed very pleased with him when subbing him off for a rest against Norwich (another clue) and I think against expectations he will hold off Dempsey. We don't even know where Dempsey is gonna play.

RVP - in the starting sense. Rested after international duty for one of the most one-sided fixtures on the calendar, liv TOT new are all far too tough fixtures for SAF to weaken his forward line, especially in the absence of Rooney. Kagawa looks slightly less nailed on, but since I doubt United will return to 4-4-2, I'd say he's pretty close. Plus, he will be needed to provide energy in the midfield in the absence of Rooney.

    NOT NAILED ON:
Lescott - Mancini definitely trying to phase him out, to the point of playing a newly-signed kid over him in a CL game.

Giroud - failed to impress tonight, benched in the PL already, Wenger has talked about giving him a rest to take the pressure off him.

Nasri - Never mind the injury, his form has declined again after a good start to the season. There is the possibility Sinclair could come in, using his width to crack open teams that aren't so easily cracked open through central passing - ARS ful SUN fits the bill. Also, if Mancini goes 3-5-2 again, there's only space for one central attacking midfielder and so he'd have to choose between Nasri & Silva - the latter should win.

      for the last point,
don't you think macini will have the possibility to play yaya as AMC?
barry, garcia as DM, like today's match.
not to mention, both silva and nasri is off form, I can see some possbility yaya playing as ACM in the near future

Today was 4-2-3-1 with Yaya AMC, Silva AML and Nasri AMR so there's space for both of them in that one. (4-2-2-2 is pretty similar to 4-2-3-1 and also has space for both of them). Just figure Sinclair might have a shout, as an early sub at the least (Nasri does seem to spend a lot of time being subbed off early, too!).

But if he went 3-4-1-2 it'd probably be
        .................Defence
        Milner Barry/Garcia Yaya Kolarov
        ................Nasri/Silva
        ..................Strikers

So only one space for both of them.

And in the absolute worst case scenario, Barry and Garcia would play in central midfield with Yaya AMC and no Nasri or Silva. They did play without both for quite a long time against Real tonight, for a start

I am not a fan of received wisdom like, "Everton starts slow" or (more relevantly) "Fulham are rubbish away from home". They might have been, but this is a new season with some new people. Berb can score if he gets served. I have seen nothing that tells me he will not get served next week as well as he got served last week. I might be (probably will be) proved wrong, but for now I am putting my faith in Berb.

I'm very conscious of the pitfalls of received wisdom, but at the end of the day the stereotype comes from some pretty long term trends of goalscoring away relative to goalscoring at home. I'm puzzled as the next guy why home advantage should matter so much, but it does. He may well be more poorly served next week than he was this week. That said, trends have to change eventually - if I see it does, I'll jump on Berba right after the City match.

I do. Just don't like treating it as a law. My point is that Everton, for example, have not started as slow as the wisdom would suggest. I don't ignore Fulham's bad recrd away from home or the away effect generally, but a form player can buck those trends, and I think their potential canot be assessed by just saying, eg, "Fulham are crap away from home".

True, it is a question of an individual's points. Regarding the Everton one many people did take into consideration that they had made many signings and not lost anyone important for the first time in years - and there was cautious expectation that they would start the season which they broadly have. The Fulham one is a bit more complex, they have bought a talented though slightly ageing striker, have promising young wingers coming through the ranks, but have also lost Dembele.

Got the following defenders for next gameweek.

    Baines, Clark, Jenkinson, Hughes, Cuellar.

Thinking of shipping out Jenkinson, but for who? I have nothing in the bank, so would have to be 4.8 million or less.

Going to wait til after tomorrow nights fixtures to consider but thinking of Verm to a Chelsea defender. Played wildcard last week so my team is pretty set. Dont need to transfer but this might be a simple way of getting a clean sheet into my team. Plus I dont have any Chelsea defensive coverage at the moment so this transfer would prevent me losing ground if Chelsea do shut out Stoke.

Isacki, at least Giroud got an assist tonight, more than he got the whole bloody time I owned him. But that's better than nothing. Hardly enough to impress overall though. I'd be wary of using terms like 'Nailed on' for the players you've listed. It feels sometimes like the manchester sides basically have no-one nailed on because they've so many good players to rotate and so many more games to play than other teams. I'd be very cautious with considering the likes of Gervinho/Lennon nailed on. They might have shown the form but if last week has taught us anything, nothing is certain, and we can never be sure...anyway I'm rambling.

    Dear Mr Platini

Please forgive any grammar or spelling errors as its a little late and to be honest i am a little fried.

I could write a compliant and send to the "monkeys" but you are the organ grinder and ultimately responsible, as head of UEFA. Whilst you been sitting about enjoying a game tonight around 200,000 of us have had our enjoyment severely dented as we have been frantically pressing refresh on you stupid unsupported cheap as chips website.

As the boss, i would have expected you would have been called in to ensure the site was up and running and any DR was operable to enjoy user experience remained an effected and your Fantasy competition provided the users with the experience they crave. However as a draft this complaint after midnight and grow to hate you even more than i did already it is obvious you really do not give a flying shat for us punters and are laughing at the hit count escalating as we keep trying to see our scores or change our teams!!

In typical fashion, i bet that smiley "i wanna kick you in the nose" face is grinning as you will use the false hits to further raise marketing revenue to line your corrupt pockets, and leave us considering alcohol or substance abuse to ease the anxiety and pain of not tampering with our teams.

Mr Platini, you and your organisation are extracting the urine from us all, and ignoring our pleas. So following an evenings frustration please head my warning - if its not working tomorrow, whilst still angry i guarantee i will not log in again for a week!! I know that sounds drastic but it was either that or hire a hitman!

Please remind yourself before bedtime that i hate you.

Need to decide whether to stick or twist regarding my team, specifically Swansea coverage.

This is my planned lineup this week. Firstly I keep missing Demel's bloody clean sheets. But at the same time Boyce and Rangel (at home) look hard to bench. Also looks hard to bench a midfielder for them. I also don't really want Graham and want to swap him out for Berbs or Fletcher, but there's every chance he'll bite me in the ass by scoring at home.

    A) Rearrange my team?
    B) Transfer?

    Foster (Begovic)
    Baines Boyce Rangel (Demel Cuellar)
    Hazard Kagawa Barfa Michu (Sterling)
    RVP Tevez Graham

Well, I hope you catch this before, then!

Rangel mqay be good for attacking points, but Eve are scoring and Tate is still playing for Chico. this makes swans def a bit risky for me. It's a headache benching a 5.0, but I'd consider Rangel 1st sub and bang Demel in there. SUN with Sess and AJ not firing seems a decent chance of a cleanie.

It all looks so simple on paper...
