We bring Gameweek 4 to a close with our usual synopsis, which this week finds us drooling over the class of an old favourite, reviving the fortunes of North London assets and berating the whims of the Old Trafford schemer.

The Player

There were other contenders but, as almost 80,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will testify, Dimitar Berbatov proves irresistible.

It wasn’t only his two goals that leads to his rise in prominence, or the fact that he was handed spot-kick duties. It’s not necessarily even his modest price tag that sparks the appeal. For me, it’s the nature of Berbatov’s performance against West Brom which proves so convincing.

Martin Jol knows exactly how to work with Berbatov’s talents. How to keep him in areas when he can taunt and punish opponents. The Bulgarian had plenty of the ball but didn’t have to come looking for it – Fulham kept him fed and allowed him to patrol the final third with menace. Berbatov duly returned two strikes and put in a shift that indicated he will be the fulcrum of the Cottagers’ attacking endeavours. Goals, assists and bonus points look assured – all should be delivered in quantities to more than justify his current price tag.

The Team

For the second week running, Arsenal impressed and hinted that they could yet play a part in the title race. In Fantasy terms, however, it was perhaps Tottenham’s victory at Reading that proved most significant.

Andre Villas-Boas has had his critics – a section of which seem so dismissive of his methods and appear to be willing him to fail following his demise at Stamford Bridge. The Spurs boss has bravely kept Emmanuel Adebayor’s ego in check, however, allowing Jermain Defoe to flourish and it was the latter’s goals that won the game and the plaudits at the Madejski.

Snuggled in the mid-price bracket, Defoe is a Fantasy asset that few will trust, given a streaky past and a lack of security. There’s little doubt that he is a striker in form, however, and a marksman of proven pedigree. A start against QPR looks certain and it will surely be Defoe who will carry the main threat to Mark Hughes’ men as Villas-Boas goes in search of a first home win since arriving at the Lane.

Equally, Fantasy managers will have be alerted to Gareth Bale’s strike – a first goal of the season that at last saw the Welshman deliver on his promise and price tag, offering a viable alternative to the current “template” midfields. Many have lost faith in Bale, as they have his manager, but there was plenty on show on Sunday to suggest that this is ill-advised.

The Talking Point

Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to rest Robin Van Persie to the bench for the home clash with Wigan rattled many. Not least me.

While some soothsayers called it correctly, I never really considered that United had quite found the gears to take on Wigan without Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and even the creativity of Shinji Kagawa. The 4-0 scoreline proved me wrong but, more significantly, gave Ferguson the comfort of knowing that such a gamble can be made again.

Wigan are, after all, no mugs and yet United brushed them aside in a stirring second-half; the “old spice” of Paul Scholes complimented by a sweeping new fragrance provided by Nick Powell.

The worry is that as United make progress in the Champions League and when Rooney finds form and fitness, the urge to rest Van Persie could flood through Ferguson’s veins more frequently. Far too frequently for the liking of the Dutchman’s ever-growing Fantasy ownership.

Seven days ago Van Persie graced this article and already looked untouchable. A Fantasy asset above all others. He still is just that but now, thanks to Ferguson’s slippery strategising, there are new question marks hanging over the value he can deliver, with a threat of rest and rotation blighting his potential prior to every European excursion. It’s unsettling.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The irony is that Cole has a much better shout of this than Marcelo does.

Marcelo is mainly just a thug who spends much of his time trying to catch up with play.

Coentrao is a better left back, and he's in his team, let alone "the world".

On the subject of Fulham home and away trends (which are of interest to me in deciding whether to get Berbatov away to Wigan) I've got the figures behind the stereotypes on the PL site.

    Season...Home goals scored / conceded..Away goals scored / conceded
    09/10..........................26/15.....................................12/31
    10/11..........................30/23.....................................18/20
    11/12..........................33/26.....................................10/25
    Current.........................5/0....(2 games)......................1/6 (2 games)

Fulham scoring fewer goals away is well supported by the data. But Fulham actually conceded about the same number of goals away as at home for the last two seasons. They may be returning to the same pattern this year, though. All early days of course.

On the flip side, Fulham's next match is away to Wigan. Their record on the last 5 visits to the DW stadium is P5 W1 D4 L0. In their last 2 visits they managed 3 goals (1.5 goals per game) which is decent enough. In their last 3 home games to Wigan they managed 6 goals (2 goals per game).

A goal from Berbs is probably not too much to ask for.

For me it is tricky because to get Berbs I need to lose Graham for a hit. If it was for a free, I'd be more likely than not to get Berbs.

Interesting stats, few points I'd make:

      1. Wigan are a much better side now than they have been over the last few seasons. They'll be away from the relegation fight and safely in midtable this season imo.

      2. Swansea's fixtures and Graham's lone striker role mean that for me, I think he'll come good soon. Getting rid for someone with a tough away game and then Man City at home would be a mistake imo.

Yeah, good point, these stats show Fulham score half as many goals away from home but how many teams can say they score equally as many goals away as they do at home? Not many I'd imagine.

Yeah exactly. Teams like Sunderland or Stoke for instance are completely superior at home as opposed to away, similarly to Fulham. So if you're going to pass up Berbatov based on that then as a general rule surely the same applies to Fletcher and Crouch.

Excellent research, the current season should be 8/0 2/6 (just being pedantic) One of the away goals was an own goal though of course.

That's interesting reading. If they score an average of 30 goals at home a season (1.5 a game) They're already nearly a third of the way to that average already, which is quite remarkable. Regardless of their poor away form, they are strong enough to possibly reach 35/40 at home if they keep up this record. That's a lot of goals for Berbatov! 😉

You've read some of my thoughts already. I think the conventional wisdom will be to stick with Graham because he will score sooner or later, and as you say below you have other issues to address. I apreciate analysis--no, I think it is the key difference between a serious player and a casual--but I also respect the feeling one gets that a certain player is going to do something. I think Berb is ging to do something. I have nothing more to offer than that.

Stats on that would be interesting but much harder to find.

It would be influenced by the teams he played for so may not reflect so much on him as a player. Spurs for example have always struck me as very much a home team.

Repost from being stuck at the bottom of last page (thanks Jigsaw for your answer)

Need to decide whether to stick or twist regarding my team, specifically Swansea coverage.

This is my planned lineup this week. Firstly I keep missing Demel’s bloody clean sheets. But at the same time Boyce and Rangel (at home) look hard to bench. Also looks hard to bench a midfielder for them. I also don’t really want Graham and want to swap him out for Berbs or Fletcher, but there’s every chance he’ll bite me in the ass by scoring at home.

    A) Rearrange my team?
    B) Transfer?

    Foster (Begovic)
    Baines Boyce Rangel (Demel Cuellar)
    Hazard Kagawa Barfa Michu (Sterling)
    RVP Tevez Graham

wow that is a super strong line up for this week imo. I’m playing Demel, Sterling and maybe even Cuellar! I know you probably have to play Boyce but i reckon Demel will probably outscore him yet again.

So A for me, there is no way that team needs a transfer imo.

Cheers, maybe my desire to upgrade to Fletcher or Berba has narrowed my vision somewhat. I know it looks good on paper, but gameweeks like this have taught me to expect to be disappointed - trying to see what form picks there are to land me those elusive points.

The frustrating thing is I almost know Demel is going to get another CS, and at least two of my mids will get 2s. I just don't know which.

I'm in the same position, the same three Swansea players which I just feel is a bit too much, but sods law is telling me if I get rid of one for a hit then they will do something, especially whilst their fixtures remain pretty good. I think Im going to sit on it, wait for berba to play the next two (wig, MCI) and evaluate, whilst hoping his price doesnt rocket too much.

West Ham and Allardyce will be very solid at home all season imo and Sunderland are hardly anything to worry about (and so obviously I don't think you need Fletcher). Similarly with Berbatov...i have him and am actually thinking of SELLING this week (see below) as i really fancy Ba in the next 2GWs.

I don't think you can drop any of those midfielders for Demel. At the end of the day all 4 of them have the potential to put up double figure points this week. Demel doesn't. He will get 6 or 1/2. If you want to drop someone for Demel it's Ragel or Boyce for me

Rangel mqay be good for attacking points, but Eve are scoring and Tate is still playing for Chico. this makes swans def a bit risky for me. It’s a headache benching a 5.0, but I’d consider Rangel 1st sub and bang Demel in there. SUN with Sess and AJ not firing seems a decent chance of a cleanie.

It all looks so simple on paper…

Yep the Naylor injury and Chico red card have compromised Swans defence for me. They are playing at home though to a team not exactly renowned for being free scoring away. And Swansea are renowned for being strong at home. Will it be enough?

I'm inclined to look at playing Demel too, over the worst of my mids.

I'd almost never play a 4.0 over a mid, however bad the prospects!

Look at it this way, with 3x swans + baines, there will be some disappointment somewhere. I think swans scoring + baines points are more likely than keeping a CS this week. You'll get michu's +1 if it happens anyway.

Also it's good to try and diversify - that's why I'm playing Demel over Davies.

hmmm ok, I'd strongly consider playing Sterling over Graham...yes it's a risk and Liverpool have a tough fixture, but you have 3 Swansea, and if they lose 2-0 or something, you've got a horrible bunch of 1/2 pointers, at least sticking in Sterling makes it exciting and it could pay off. I think it's more likely he might get something than Michu AND graham scoring.

I know what you mean but collectively I would expect Swansea to perform better against Everton than Liverpool do against United, so should have more goals to share out. Sterling would be sharing out goals from a very small pie IMO

I posted this a few nights ago and it seemed to amuse. It relates to what Isacki is talking about so here it is again:

    A parable:

There came a time when a man bethought himself to dump Graham for Berba. He knew his ideas might be heretical, so he went to the Pharisees and posted before them this query: “Should a man forsake Graham for the wayward Berba, partaking thereby of a hit? Lo, he hath spent his talents and returneth with none, but shall I welcome him with open arms, slay the fatted calf for him and put him up in my front line with Tevez and RVP? Well do I know how Graham hath made faithful use of his talents, and plied the front line of Swansea through feast and (mostly) famine, and might well reap the rewards of patience, but should one not praise the return of the languid, insouciant genius that is Berb?”

The Pharisees chuckled indulgently and contemptuously replied that only folly could bring a man to cast his hits at the feet of the lugubrious Bulgarian in the face of the industrious Swansean’s constancy. “It is written that Graham will ultimately score more than Berb” sayeth the Pharisees.

And behold, the man hath kept Graham, and spurned the Berb. And it came to pass on the fourth gameweek of the season that the Berb did reap two goals and three baps, and Graham did lay a steaming two-point turd. And the man took thought and concluded that the Pharisees were f**king c**ts and that he should bloody well do what his gut told him to do.

I know it's easy to have happen ... so take out a marker and a piece of paper, write on it "I shalt not listen to random internet schlubs concerning team moves" and tape this to/above your computer.

If you're a mobile user sort, tattoo it to your forearm. It won't look sillier than you scrolling incessantly with your finger ...

Seriously, this place can be an echo chamber of foolishness.

Agreed, But it can also be a source of brilliant advice. It's on me to learn to tell the difference. The worst kind of advice, though, is the kind that just says: "graham will score more than berb" or "fulham can't create chances" without more. Isacki, fortunately, is breaking it down the right way.

Respect to Isaacki, but it's a fool's errand - this stat crunching. I agree with you: watch the games, get a feel for team/player form, make your decisions.

All this 'they score an average of' sh!te is white noise. Furiously shifting abacus beads in an attempt to bring precognitive order to an inherently chaotic system. Toss a coin and you'd be as accurate with loads more time for other pursuits.

RVP is nailed on 😉 , These things are not always easy to know. I don't blame people who play the percentages and revert to such PL cliché's. However we should expect certain responses before we even ask them. The onus on us then is whether we listen to our own advice or the expected response from the FFS community.

    Foster

    Baines gibbs demel

    Hazard (c) cazorla michu morrison

    Rvp tevez berba

    Begovic maloney Davies cuellar

Is it worth using my free transfer to do either michu to pienaar?

Team at the moment for GW5 (1FT, 0.9m BANK):

    Foster(RDG)
    Demel(SUN) Baines(swa) Rafael(liv)
    Michu(EVE) Hazard(STK) Sterling(MUN) Cazorla(mci)
    Tevez(ARS) Van Persie(liv) Berbatov(wig)

subs - Begovic, Maloney, Cuellar, Jenkinson

Who should be first for the chop?
    a) Rafael
    b) Jenkinson
    c) Cazorla
    d) Berbatov
    e) None, save a transfer

Seems rather rash to be considering selling Berbs but Ba is very tempting given i have zero Newcastle cover.
    Berbs - wig, MCI
    Ba - NOR, rdg

Could easily bring him back as well in GW7 or 8

That is an option i didn't really consider. hmmmm

I'm not a fan of Ben Arfa tbh. I think he has bundles of skill but his decision making is very questionable. Plus i think he's over priced.

Ba is the one i really want. I also think Cisse is a good shout but i can't afford him by selling Berbatov

          Well you should be! 😉

His decision making has been much better this season tbf to him, a real spark in an otherwise solid but average start to the season.

Think he could really put Norwich to the sword, Garrido's getting on a bit, could be a bit of a mismatch imo.

Also one plus to him is that he's suspended for the EL game on Thursday so will be fresher, imo Ba will start with Shola with Cisse rested on the bench.

Jenks should be a painless swap out after gw5 and he may have risen further in price. in any case, no rush on that one.

I am concerned about Cazorla looking tired, but he is a long term player, no? I'd hope for a Silvaesque steady stream of points.

      e) Save a transfer. Your team is solid and I would expect Fulham to get a rare away wing and beat Wigan this weekend. They are looking sharp and Berb will be right in amongst it. Ba on the other hand was benched at the weekend and could be set to start the europa match and once again be benched for the PL game.

So, looking at budget forwards for the next 3/6 fixtures.

It's got to be Lambert, hasn't it? There's not all that much choice below 6.5. I'm not sure I could make something of Vaz Te or De Santo, not when Harry Kane should get some minutes soon and is a wallet (but not points) friendly 4.5.

In a couple of weeks, the Pog could be a very temptingly priced 4.8.

Wow, thinking about these players is making me sad.... Lambert it is, reluctantly.

Not sure, he got subbed at H/T and then wasn't involved at all last GW, heard something about an injury but not too sure.

Even if he is fit, he might be on the bench as they won last time out and he won't be fully match fit.

I can wait until closer to the deadline so Maritimo injury not really an issue.

I was always gonna get Morrison until Monday night as Ba hadn't shown any form but I'm tempted to change my mind and get him in, especially as at least Snodgrass will play whereas Petric is unlikely to.

would you bench any of Hazard, Cazorla, Michu, Nolan, Fletcher, Van Persie, Tevez to play Clyne? He's on my bench atm. Although he could get on if O'Brien plays ahead of McCartney again

For those of you worried about the europa league effect on our players, remember that we are only likely to play 3-4 first teamers. I would expect Ba to be the main premier league striker for the time being, so he may well be rested in europe.

Interesting you think Ba will be rested.

Personally I think he might go the other way this week and rest Cisse and start Ba. Partially as Ba only played 45 on Monday but also as he has a good partnership with Shola. Then again he might bench both.

Also think side might be stronger than we imagine but we'll have to wait and see.

Alreet cabeye. Just a hunch from my part. I would just see Ba as the main man at the moment. So if pardiola is going to rest one of them for the europa game, it should be him. Dave could do with the minutes in europa to try and play his way back into form. Also, i wouldn't play shola from the start, even in europa. I don't think his body is up to it, and he is proving to be BRILLIANT as a super sub, so I would just keep him for that.

Everything Pardiola says suggest we will have one line up for the premier and one for the europa.

Yeah typical agent rubbish from Ba's agent this week, not too happy about that.

If Cisse does start, 3 starts in a week will be very tough going so I'd suggest that he'll only start 1 of Maritimo and Norwich, personally I'd prefer him to play in the PL.

In fairness to the Belgian defender, he had spent much of the night prior to that performing two roles — that of full back as well as centre half in the absence of a certain Brazilian called Maicon.
City’s new right back looked as uncomfortable against Ronaldo as he had against Gareth Bale in this competition for Inter Milan two seasons ago. Maicon did not need a bus. Someone had already called him another taxi.

I'm playing a 5-3-2 system - three in midfield are Toure (6 points), Shirokov (2 points) and Pirlo. Got Cesar and Martinez on the bench.

Huntelaar up front (4 points) with Messi (C) tomorrow.

All five of my defence play tomorrow - Alba / Ramos / Ivanovic / Rafael / Evra

The decision then is Cesar or Martinez for Shirokov...?

You can't predict the future. That final percentage will be alot to do with chance. The strategy might have worked over two seasons, but that doesn't mean anything, especially when that's presumably the data set the strategy was designed around.

Success is about skill, judgement and avoiding bad luck - therefore it is about luck.
