We bring Gameweek 4 to a close with our usual synopsis, which this week finds us drooling over the class of an old favourite, reviving the fortunes of North London assets and berating the whims of the Old Trafford schemer.

The Player

There were other contenders but, as almost 80,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will testify, Dimitar Berbatov proves irresistible.

It wasn’t only his two goals that leads to his rise in prominence, or the fact that he was handed spot-kick duties. It’s not necessarily even his modest price tag that sparks the appeal. For me, it’s the nature of Berbatov’s performance against West Brom which proves so convincing.

Martin Jol knows exactly how to work with Berbatov’s talents. How to keep him in areas when he can taunt and punish opponents. The Bulgarian had plenty of the ball but didn’t have to come looking for it – Fulham kept him fed and allowed him to patrol the final third with menace. Berbatov duly returned two strikes and put in a shift that indicated he will be the fulcrum of the Cottagers’ attacking endeavours. Goals, assists and bonus points look assured – all should be delivered in quantities to more than justify his current price tag.

The Team

For the second week running, Arsenal impressed and hinted that they could yet play a part in the title race. In Fantasy terms, however, it was perhaps Tottenham’s victory at Reading that proved most significant.

Andre Villas-Boas has had his critics – a section of which seem so dismissive of his methods and appear to be willing him to fail following his demise at Stamford Bridge. The Spurs boss has bravely kept Emmanuel Adebayor’s ego in check, however, allowing Jermain Defoe to flourish and it was the latter’s goals that won the game and the plaudits at the Madejski.

Snuggled in the mid-price bracket, Defoe is a Fantasy asset that few will trust, given a streaky past and a lack of security. There’s little doubt that he is a striker in form, however, and a marksman of proven pedigree. A start against QPR looks certain and it will surely be Defoe who will carry the main threat to Mark Hughes’ men as Villas-Boas goes in search of a first home win since arriving at the Lane.

Equally, Fantasy managers will have be alerted to Gareth Bale’s strike – a first goal of the season that at last saw the Welshman deliver on his promise and price tag, offering a viable alternative to the current “template” midfields. Many have lost faith in Bale, as they have his manager, but there was plenty on show on Sunday to suggest that this is ill-advised.

The Talking Point

Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to rest Robin Van Persie to the bench for the home clash with Wigan rattled many. Not least me.

While some soothsayers called it correctly, I never really considered that United had quite found the gears to take on Wigan without Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and even the creativity of Shinji Kagawa. The 4-0 scoreline proved me wrong but, more significantly, gave Ferguson the comfort of knowing that such a gamble can be made again.

Wigan are, after all, no mugs and yet United brushed them aside in a stirring second-half; the “old spice” of Paul Scholes complimented by a sweeping new fragrance provided by Nick Powell.

The worry is that as United make progress in the Champions League and when Rooney finds form and fitness, the urge to rest Van Persie could flood through Ferguson’s veins more frequently. Far too frequently for the liking of the Dutchman’s ever-growing Fantasy ownership.

Seven days ago Van Persie graced this article and already looked untouchable. A Fantasy asset above all others. He still is just that but now, thanks to Ferguson’s slippery strategising, there are new question marks hanging over the value he can deliver, with a threat of rest and rotation blighting his potential prior to every European excursion. It’s unsettling.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

i'd really advocate buying neither. southampton have the worst defence in the league. get a cheap reading defender if money's a limitation. or alternatively, southampton's fox. as he can attack

Do we really know what Southampton's defense really is? I mean so far they have faced City, Wigan, United, and Arsenal. I'm not sure that anybody would look that good against that run of fixtures.

they looked absolutely hopeless. give them a few games to get to terms with the step up. if, then, they display aptitude, i'd jump on. but not while they keep up this collective headless chicken impersonation. incidentally i like nath clyne. though i know not why

Was tempted when seeing they have Villa this week at home, but not really a fan of short term churn of backline. Has potential to blow up in your face. May look at Gorkss instead.

Gorkss is good as he rotates reasonably well with WBA and Swansea defenders (also Fulham to some extent).

I see Reading improving defensively whereas Southampton I'm not so sure.

As an arsenal fan...I hope they start Aguero, Tevez has our number traditionally...Giroud shouldn't be allowed anywhere. As a Tevez owner he would be likely an impact sub, and generally that's all he should need to get us points. As a fan Gervinho false 9 up the middle is our best chance...Kompany is skinable in his current form...Maicon and Clichy are not.

What do you guys think off this weak rafael -> naughton and next week morrison to a. johnson
rafael has a couple of though games comming up and isnt 100% nailed on. naughton should be nailed on for the time beak and tottenham has a couple of nice fixtures until BAE is back. this also solves some covering issues as i allready have utd and wba coverage, but no spurs + s'land coverage.

rest of team looks like this:

    Foster - Begovic

    Rafael/naughton - Demel - Baines - Cuellar - Santon
    Michu - Morrison/Johnson - Carzola - Guthrie - HBA
    RVP - Tevez - Jelavic

Jelavic is staying for now unless some news about his injury.

Short term options cost you 8 points if you think about it. Even if you have a free transfer, you could save the transfer to avoid a hit later down the line, the same when you have to get the short term option out. Only ever worth it for a major captain choice.

Only naughton is short term option, adam johnson ill keep for a while. I dont have any $ banked up so cant get johnson without downgrading somewhere else. Also i dont find a short term defense a big problem as i will pretty much never play more than 3 defenders.

These are both the free transfers so no points will be lost.

        Thanks

What's the thoughts on taking a hit to remove Petric to Berba/Mirallas/Ba/Jelly or Play Puncheon (coming off 2 assist last 2 GW's & AVL next) & bench Petric.

I have to choose between -4 to sub Nasri or play Puncheon (Nasri was on his way out even before the injury). I think I'm going to ship Nasri and bench Puncheon yet again, as its for the long term, like yours would be. I'd ship petric if I were you and take the hit. Berbs or Ba, my heart says berbs.

Playing my WC this week and I'm looking for some thoughts on this team...

    Howard, McCarthy
    Baines, McAuley, Demel, Hughes, Barnett
    Hazard, Michu, Fellaini, Cabaye, Dembele
    RVP, Ba, Berbatov

Also, assuming I stay with this team as is, who would you have at defense for this coming week? I play three at the back and Baines and McAuley are shoo-ins. But who is my third back this week? Demel (Sunderland)? Or Hughes (Wigan)? Who is more likely to get the clean sheet?

Perhaps, but if you watched the match against Newcastle, you might have noticed that Fellaini would have had a goal if it weren't for the rubbish linesman. He looked superb in the midfield. I've had him since the beginning as well and if I were to swap him out now I would only get £6.7 for him compared to his £6.9 current value.

Don't buy into this logic as you could argue that other players also scored/could have scored goals in the game. I'd look a stats to help make a decision if I were you.

That said, if you already have Fellaini, I'd stick rather than changing.

I know, but I've had him since the beginning of the year and think he will come around. Everybody is jumping on the HBA bandwagon, but I'm not convinced. Cabaye did have an assist last match.

Regardless, I suppose I could drop him and Dembele. That would free up exactly £13 to spend on a pair of midfielders.

With Maicon starting last night, do we think Zabaleta has a better chance of starting at the w/e? Reason I ask is because my defence is currently this bad:

    Zabaleta, Cuellar, McCartney, Hughes, Clyne

..but he has Swansea away this week! Current plan is Kagawa -> HBA this week, which leaves more than enough for Zabaleta -> Baines in GW6. In fact I could even do Cuellar/Hughes -> Baines in GW6 also if I get HBA this week

Zab may well start this weekend but either way I'd say you have to make plans to replace him. Even if he does play I don't think City's defence are good value at the moment.

Probably should have just written this out before - anything better than:

GW5: Kagawa (liv) -> Barfa (NOR)
GW6: Zabaleta (ful) -> Baines (SOT)
GW7: Barfa (MUN) -> Santi (whu)

    Jaask, Federici
    Zabaleta, Cuellar, Hughes, McCartney, Clyne
    Bale, Kagawa, Pienaar, Michu, Guthrie
    RVP, Tevez, Podolski

Why barfa out? He's a keeper for me, unless injuries or bad form strike. We've got nice fixtures just around the corner too. Better to try and do michu to santi when swansea's fixtures go bad (downgrade somewhere else)

Like your next two planned transfers.

I'm a huge HBA fan, and don't think it's wise to ship him though.

I guarantee by week 7 you'll have someone else you'll want to ship too.

Number51. Its important to understand, that the only time a transfer is really free, is if you have two saved up, and have to use one or you will use it. Otherwise there are ALWAYS times when you will need to take a hit somewhere down the line, for injuries, etc so any transfer that you make, rather than saving the transfer will cost you 4 points at some point down the line. That's the way I see it anyway. Though it is a point that seems to be overlooked by many on here.

Hello China. A question as you are a big NEW fan. Thinking of getting some NEW attacking coverage. Ba or HBA? Leaning towards HBA myself as he is suspended in Europa league too, but after Monday I feel a bit undecided. Other opinions are very welcomed. Thanks

        Hi Mancio.

Both are great options if you ask me. I have barfa and mrs china will be getting ba (if jelavic is ruled out). We have a really nice run of fixtures from now until around GW16 so why not double up? Keep an eye on the europa team this week though, to see if ba starts. Its possible that pardiola might want to punish him for his whinging by relegating him to the europa team.

They are DEFINITELY not worth it for short term transfers (unless it is for a major captain choice). Basically is what I am saying is that ALL transfers should be weighed up as if they are for a hit, because they will end up costing you 4pts at sometime the line (unless you have two saved up). I have recently come round to this way of thinking, do you get what i am saying? I'm not sure if i am making myself understood

          Yeah I understand.

          It makes sense.

I think hits are justified though early on in the season. First off, you get price rises. Second, you gain yourself transfers for later weeks.

A transfer made this week is one you don't have to make next week.

Yeah. They can absolutely be justified in some circumstances. I'm not against hits at all. I just mean that every transfer (even free ones) should be weighed up, in the same way you would if you were weighing up a hit.

    Keepers are Foster and Jaas
    A) Hangeland, McAuley, Baines, Demel, Clark
    B) Hughes, McAuley, Baines, Reid, Clark
    C) Hughes, McAuley, Baines, Demel, Clark + 0.5 in the bank
    D) Baines, McAuley, Gibbs, Nelsen, O'Brien
    E) Hangeland, McAuley, Gibbs, Reid, Cuellar (to be upgraded with the 0.9 in bank)

Wouldn't mind Baines(-4) to start against SWA away instead of Lescott, considering you will end up getting him anyways. He can use the freebie next week on another transfer and probably save .1 or .2 on a price hike. I think it is a more than justified move.

          That would depend for me.
Everton have swansea away, so they are unlikely to keep a CS this weekend, so you could easily hold off until the following game.

Only take a hit, if a) your team would be horrible if lescott doesn't play this weekend, or b) you have loads of transfers that need to be made, so you will have to take a hit in the next few weeks regardless

The beauty about arriving late on a bandwagon is that it makes you much more flexible. Mrs China Mag got in hazard on her WC last week, so will be able to sell him (for silva?) for that run without losing much value. People who have had him from the start will likely keep hold, to avoid losing value, but all that will (probably) do is see them losing points!!
