Our Watchlist rankings were refreshed earlier this week, with the defensive solidity offered by West Ham reflected in our update. Up front, we hold firm with Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez, while a certain Bulgarian makes his way into the top three in the tussle for our Fantasy affections. You’ll find the updated rankings, in their usual location, in right sidebar…

Goalkeepers

Jussi Jaaskelainen climbs to the top of the pile after registering a third clean sheet in his opening four matches. The West Ham stopper is racking up the save points in FPL – the top scoring keeper thus far, his cut-price appeal has already seen his cost rise this week, with strong fixtures to follow. Ben Foster has also seen a price hike. With Fantasy managers shipping out David De Gea in their droves due to Sir Alex Ferguson’s rotation policy, Foster’s security of starts and guaranteed save points is proving popular – four favourable fixtures in the next six will likely see the Baggies man continue to pick up in ownership.

Michel Vorm drops down to third after a disappointing display at Villa last weekend. Swansea have now conceded twice in their last two and with Chico still suspended and Neil Taylor out for the season, suddenly Michael Laudrup’s side look a little less enticing at the back. Everton’s Tim Howard holds steady in fourth, despite conceding twice at Goodison on Monday evening – a kind fixture list offers the Toffees stopper plenty chance of points over the next couple of months.

Defenders

Unsurprisingly, Leighton Baines remains in pole position after grabbing the opener against Newcastle on Monday evening. With City and United mustering a single clean sheet between them this term, the Toffees left-back is looking the best bet for those Fantasy managers willing to spend big at the back, with his propensity for picking up FPL bonus points returning eight already – joint-top after four Gameweeks.

Gareth McAuley is another strong West Brom option. With Goran Popov rated “very doubtful” for this weekend’s visit of Reading, McAuley and Liam Ridgewell could be primed to pick up the points once again. The former, with a goal and assist accrued already, offers the greater goal threat of the Baggies pair at present.

West Ham’s Guy Demel climbs in our estimations after another clean sheet at Norwich last weekend. The right-back looks nailed-on for Sam Allardyce’s side and priced at 4.1 in FPL and 3.6 in the Sky Sports game, he’s proving to be a cut-price gem at the back so far.

Angel Rangel continues his slow slide down the rankings. As mentioned above, the Swansea backline has been hammered by injury and suspension and Michael Laudrup’s men have paid the price. The fixture list continues to look prosperous, though; with three home matches in the next four Gameweeks, Angel’s attacking right flank raids gets the nod over budget option Ben Davies.

Thomas Vermaelen remains our Arsenal defender of choice. The Belgian is facing stiff competition from Kieran Gibbs for our Fantasy affections after the left-back produced a pair of assists against Southampton – while Carl Jenkinson remains the budget option, the imminent return of Bacary Sagna will surely prove detrimental to his game time. With three clean sheets in four, the Gunners look far more stable since employing Steve Bould as defensive coach and Vermaelen’s eye for goal is always capable of producing.

Midfielders

Eden Hazard may have drawn a blank last time out at QPR, but the Chelsea new boy holds firm at the top of the midfielder rankings. The Belgian is afforded two strong home matches in the next three Gameweeks to return to goalscoring form, with Stoke and Norwich both rolling up to the Bridge, his potential for points is obvious.

Michu remains close on Hazard’s heels. While our faith in the Swansea backline has slightly diminished, the summer signing from Rayo Vallecano looks the safest attacking option ahead of (EVE, RDG, WIG) in the next four. With Danny Graham struggling for goals and new boy Pablo Hernandez handing Michael Laudrup a selection headache out wide, Michu will be crucial to his side’s chances of bouncing back from their surprise defeat at Villa last time round.

Santi Cazorla stays in third, despite a trip to City and home clash with Chelsea up next. The Arsenal playmaker has settled seamlessly into Arsene Wenger’s first XI and looks primed for Fantasy points – as Members can see, his potential for goals and assists is second to none, when assessing the midfield options.

Steven Pienaar justified his Scout Pick selection last week with a pair of assists against Newcastle. The South African has now overtaken Marouane Fellaini in FPL and with form, fixtures and a kind mid-price valuation across the Fantasy games, Pienaar’s upcoming schedule should ensure a continuation of his recent strong performances.

Gareth Bale makes his way back up the Watchlist rankings after opening his scoring account for the season in Spurs’ win at Reading on Sunday. Many had lost patience with the Welshman after a blank first three Gameweeks and sold him on but Bale served a reminder of his capabilities against the Royals and now has four home games and a trip to Southampton in the next six to plunder the attacking returns.

Below the top five we find the likes of James Morrison and Kevin Nolan holding firm with potentially prosperous fixtures to come. Antonio Valencia replaces Shinji Kagawa as our United midfield option for the time being, while Raheem Sterling enters our thinking as a budget option. Robert Snodgrass suffers from bad fixtures but remains a worthy differential in the low-to-mid price bracket.

Forwards

Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez remain at the top, despite rotation concerns over the Manchester duo. With Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero both nearing full fitness, the situation may be reassessed over the coming week or two but right now, our faith in the pair still remains strong.

Dimitar Berbatov leaps up the rankings after his eye-catching home debut for Fulham last weekend. Reunited with Martin Jol, the Bulgarian seems to have his swagger back and is the current front runner for that crucial third forward slot, with huge numbers of Fantasy managers already drafting him in this week.

A brace away to Reading saw Jermain Defoe continue his decent start to the season. in the short-term, at least, Defoe looks to be ahead of Emmanuel Adebayor in the Tottenham pecking order and with three goals and an assist in his first four, we’re backing him to maintain his form with a strong run of games on the horizon.

Southampton’s Rickie Lambert offers a cut-price option up top and has three home games in the next five to add to his couple of goals so far, Demba Ba’s brace at Everton is surely enough to earn him a first-team recall ahead of games against Norwich and Reading, while Lukas Podolski enjoys a climb and offers an alternative to Santi Cazorla amongst the Arsenal attack.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Long-term, I'd look to plan to start 3 defenders each week and bench two. Shawcross rotates well with Demel so you can play one of those each week which is fine. Zabaleta can be your expensive, 'play every week' type, although I'd recommend transferring him out soon as his place in the team isn't secure. As for Williams and Hangeland, I'd choose one and transfer the other to a cheaper defender who you can rotate with them (e.g. Gorkss?)

As for your midfield, it's not too bad. I'd look to move Lampard as I don't think he will be involved in enough goals to justify his price tag. Cazorla is a good bet after this week. Also I'd consider shifting Britton for someone in the same price range with a bit more attacking threat (Sterling? Guthrie? Shcneiderlin?). That said, he'll be on your bench in case of emergency so I wouldn't waste a transfer there unless your on a wildcard.

Bent Torres and Adebayor could do well but since you already have Bale and Ade is struggling to get into the team, he's a no-no short-term. I'd look at Ba/Berbatov/Podolski who are on form at the moment. Bent and Torres aren't bad picks but I perhaps consider picking one amazing forward who you can captain most weeks (i.e. Aguero, Tevez, Van Persie, Rooney), although arguably this isn't essential.

Also I'd move Federici long-term as Schwarzer won't score well every week.

Don't bring in a player just because of the team they play for! You have to look at a player on individual merit. Of course part of this is his fixtures but the player has to be a good pick!

Bale or Ba would be nice but I wouldn't sell any of your players for them this week.

Fletcher is away to West Ham who have been good defensively. Graham is at home to Everton who lost away to West Brom.

Maybe keep for one for week and see what happens though there might be a fletcher price rise if he scores again. Same for Graham if he finally scores.

I think Graham and Fletcher will finish the season with a similar points haul myself (with Graham offering more assist potential, and playing for a team creating more chances) - so if it's a short term thing for fixtures, maybe - if it's season long - I wouldn't do that one myself. HTH

Need some help on my transfers: I need to spread my funds out to make my team a bit more even. It is either Carzola or Hazard that I ship out and I went with Hazard....though choice.

    Hazard ----> Michu

Zabaletta -----> Baines I feel like Baines is a player that you either get in at the start or he is too expensive to work in. I think he is going to kill it this year....Zabaletta isn't nailed on! scoring a zero in a gameweek is like porn without titties.

Graeme ----> Berbatov Berba is the man

Oberton -----> Kacanikic Oberton doesn't play.

De Gea -----> Foster good fixtures and De Gea doesnt play.

So Nasri out for at least 3 weeks apparently. Looking for a short/mid-term replacement.

Should I be looking at anyone other than Ben Arfa?

    - has to be less than 8.5
    - rest of midfield is: Cazorla, Michu, Pienaar, Kackanaklic

    Thanks

I feel myself drawn towards him this week, like a big Belgian siren luring me onto the rocks... IF he starts I reckon he'll bag a goal, but he's not had many minutes yet. If we get a hint that he's in line for a start I might well bring him in for Jelavic.

I think your overall balance is a bit weak to be honest. Davies is a short-term punt and double WHU is a bit over the top IMO. consider Gorkss to rotate with McCauley/Swansea defenders too.

Also, I wouldn't select both Kaca and Sterling and would aim to have a slot for one 6-7m midfielder

When Everton was good, baines was good. When they were attackin in full force he was.. Cant see that happenin too often in away games. Even in the second half of the newcastle game, when newcastle improved a bit baines was invisible. Sure he'll do ok in home games, but i aint convinced he's worth 7.1 when Rafael, Ridgewell, Gibbs etc offer similar value at a reduced price

i love the guy.. but gettin him in this week may be a little too early. Cant really see a CS, so he's startin of at 2.. just like any other mid/defender in the game. Plus He'll actually need to defend this game so he's attack will be slightly below par. Also, with a guy like baines you have to get him in and leave him in. Has potential to score every week, so you cant ever realyl get rid(even though he'll get 2 pointers often enough). Can be frustratin. That bein said, he is in my plans

I got him last week on my WC with the knowledge that I can always downgrade to any elite defender when one starts looking like value for money. At the moment he's the best expensive defender IMO.

I imagine Kacka is slightly more sure on minutes. I can tell you as a Kacka first sub owner that he's a very frustrating little sight every Monday with a goal or an assist (or 2) sitting on your bench. I might start him this week

I had same dilema and went for Sterling. It's a coin flip, since Kaca is allegedly subject to rotation (although you'd think he's done enough to cement his place) and Sterling is allegedly too young to play every week and needs protecting (!)

I think if you have Berba then go Sterling (which is what I did), but then I'm having a sh1t season so far!

no - the early 'adopters' are the ones who get to the top.
Getting Bale at a point where he starts a great run to see him in the top 5 Mids is a great plan. You'll get the cash value over 8 weeks with him also.

DEpends on the rest of your team. I was one of those that ditched Bale in the international break (yes, I know) and even from last season he can be streaky. He has always looked good this season but FPL wise he can be frustrating. If you are going to get him in do it now while the fixtures are good and sit tight during the slumps.

No, Kagawa to Ferguson is crazy. Kagawa to Bale is a good transfer and I have no why you would think itd be crazy. Spurs have better fixtures than united and Bale has more shots than Kagawa and isnt a risk of rotation.

So Man Utd fans out there. What's the view on SAF's line up v Liverpool. From my memory he plays more defensively against teams such as Liverpool and Man City where there is a derby feel. Man Utd have only scored three in the last four years in the league at Anfield which would back that up.

I note that Scholes has now played twice in a few days and Giggs was rested last night. I think that could mean a start for Giggs, who is mr reliable in these tough games. I also seem to remember him not being afraid to start with the likes of Hernandez up front in such fixtures.

Kagawa's role in a more defensive minded away line up is my most pressing concern.

    Any thoughts?

Liverpool are shite at the moment...and although this is usually a big game, I wouldn't go off previous seasons with this one.

      RVP will start IMO
      Giggs won't
Kagawa will - but you're right to be cautious on his role.

          Lot's of reasons but mainly....

He doesn't fit well with the current set up hence - he's only played 80 minutes over four games. He will come on in second half for 20 minutes.

I reckon RvP, Valencia, Carrick are certain to start in the front 6. If Kagawa starts, I doubt there'll be a second striker. So, it'll surely be an attacking role for him, if he starts. But he might be the first one to go off if we need a goal or two in the end.

          Valencia - Carrick - Clev/Ando/Scholes - Nani/Giggs
          Kagawa/Welbeck
