Emmanuel Adebayor is sidelined for Tottenham’s European clash with Lazio. Steve Clarke admits Goran Popov is unlikely to feature in West Brom’s home clash with Reading. Michael Kightly is hoping for a less defensive role with Stoke, while Oscar steals the headlines as Chelsea and Manchester United get their respective Champions League campaigns underway:

Emmanuel Adebayor has been ruled out of Tottenham’s Europa League clash with Lazio this evening. Andre Villas-Boas revealed in yesterday’s press conference that the Togo international has picked up a hamstring injury and will miss the White Hart Lane opener – Benoit Assou-Ekotto is also sidelined while the club assess his knee problem. Major question marks must now be placed against Adebayor’s availability for Sunday’s home clash against QPR, further enhancing Jermain Defoe’s chances of starting as he looks to add to his three goals and an assist from the opening four Gameweeks.

Steve Clarke gave Fantasy managers an early injury update yesterday. In particular, the West Brom boss spoke of Steven Reid and Goran Popov’s chances of making Saturday’s home clash with Reading:

“Steven’s been outside working with the medical staff towards being fit as soon as possible. He’s had a hamstring injury and he’s recovered to a point where it’s almost right, but you don’t want to take the next step too quickly. We will monitor it as the week goes on but we are still hopeful for the weekend. As for Goran, he had to go back to Kiev after the Fulham game and we will assess him when he’s back, but he is very doubtful for the weekend.”

The Popov prognosis is particularly good news for Fantasy managers, in the short-term at least. A start at left-back for the loan signing would have a major knock-on effect on the game time of Liam Ridgewell and possibly Gareth McAuley, with Ridgewell’s versatility meaning he is also capable of moving to the centre of defence. Both have been drafted in by plenty Fantasy managers ahead of a schedule that sees (RDG, QPR, SOT) in the next six and with clean sheets in both their first two at the Hawthorns, more investment can be expected.

Michael Kightly has admitted he’s had to rein in his attacking instincts for Stoke after a tough opening start to the season:

“I am having to play a bit more defensive than I would like, but we have had a tough start with our games and sometimes you have to do that for the team. We’ve played top sides at home and played at Wigan where they play a different system. Hopefully, against the so-called lesser teams at home we can be a bit more free-flowing and attacking. When the big clubs come, you know you aren’t going to have as much possession and their full-backs play advanced, so if you don’t track them back they will punish you. You are thinking about their full-back and stopping him scoring rather than thinking of getting past him to create a goal.”

Despite facing home clashes with Arsenal and City, Tony Pulis’ side remain unbeaten after four Gameweeks, with Kightly still managing to average five points per game in FPL. Trips to Chelsea, Liverpool and United in the next four is likely to have the Potters on the back foot once again before the fixture list begins to favour Stoke from Gameweek 9 onwards.

Manchester United 1 Galatasaray 0
Sir Alex made three changes at the back for the visit of Galatasaray. David De Gea was given the nod in goal, Jonny Evans replaced Rio Ferdinand in central defence and Patrice Evra reclaimed the left-back berth from Alexander Buttner. Robin Van Persie and Shinji Kagawa were both handed starts, having been rested for the weekend match with Wigan. Kagawa supplied the assist for Michael Carrick to notch the only goal of a game that saw Darren Fletcher return to action after a lengthy lay-off, replacing Paul Scholes with just over 10 minutes remaining.

United’s spot-kick problems continued last night, though. Nani’s failed attempt against the Turkish side, following on from Javier Hernandez and Van Persie’s misses against Wigan and Southampton respectively means United have now failed to score with their last three penalties. While Wayne Rooney looks likely to remain number one for penalties when he returns from injury, Ferguson admitted Van Persie should have taken last night’s effort, suggesting the Dutchman is first in line until Rooney returns.

“I think he (Nani) just ran and grabbed the ball. I thought Robin should have taken it, to be honest with you.I think we will have to decide before the game. That was my fault, I should have done that.”

Chelsea 2 Juventus 2
It was all about Oscar last night as the young Brazilian made a sensational Champions League debut for the defending champions. Handed a starting role alongside Eden Hazard and Ramires in the attacking midfield three, the young Brazilian fired a superb brace against Juventus to announce his intentions to Fantasy managers. Just as we begin to perhaps consider him as a differential, he was then withdrawn on 74 minutes for Juan Mata, with Roberto Di Matteo admitting post-match:

“It was a bad tackle on Oscar before he came off. He had a knock on his ankle and we will assess him tomorrow.”

In other injury news, Chelsea were without the services of Daniel Sturridge for last night’s match – the club revealed via their official twitter stream that the forward was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Reading are playing pretty bad football though. I wouldn't ever start Guthrie over my other 7 so its more of just insurance incase someone missesout/gets rotated. Sterling looks more of a threat and plays for the better team so I fancy him over Guthrie right now.

LOl yeah I was going for Balance and will have Headaches picking 3 defenders each week. I figured I could do Ivanovic-> Rafael and then maybe Pienaar -> Kagawa over the coming weeks if it looks like their playing time is secure but I'll see how it plays out. More money in the defence than I would have planned at the start of the season but without Rooney/RVP you just have so much more money to play with.

Swapping my Ba for Defoe/podlski could give me this...

    gw 6 - 15: Ba/defoe: read/VILLA/CHEL/south/WIGAN/WEST/SWANS/south/stoke/WIGAN
    Ba/Podl: read/west/nor/QPR/liv/WEST/SWANS/south/stoke/WIGAN

I can always get Santi in of course and have the best of both worlds.

I really do prefer Ben Arfa/ Podolski. Isn't Ben Arfa on penalties as well? I still think Podolski will be on penalties too, he's playing too well for them to give them to Arteta imo.

I'm not sure about Barfa. I read an article that said Arfa ripped the ball away from Ba because he earned the penalty and that that status quo was still that Ba was on penalties. Not sure though.

I for some reason just never seem to own Barfa. i always have this nagging feeling in the back of my mind that he is not consistent and blows hot and cold. His stats so far and especially from last year indicates the opposite though.

You reckon Santi is a better bet then Podl? Podlski game time is worrying me though.

Santi over Pod for me. There are quite a few strikers with better stats than Pod and actually play up top while there is currently no better MDer than Santi at least stats wise.

HBA did take then Pen that he earned but I'm sure Ba is still the main taker.

I wouldn't swap Ba for Defoe right now. AVB seems like a bit of a clown and you just can't be sure Ade won't come into this team any week now. I know Ba was a sub last week but I recon he will see more mins over the next 6 weeks than Defo will. Unless tot bought Ade just to have him waste away on the bench....

Is there no way AVB can accommodate both Defoe and Ade? I can't see him dropping Defoe they way he is playing currently.

He may try but he doesn't seem to be a fan of 4 4 2 and I don't see how he can shift either to the wings. With the MF players Tot have I think the Loan striker formation sure their personel more so I doubt you see too maybe mins whith both on the field. That being said AVB is a huge clown and could just crap all over what I just said.

Starting to think my RVP vs. Ben Arfa Captain decision is going to be haunting me right the way up to the deadline.

I'd go for Ben Arfa if I had him. Newcastle look like they'll use that draw to kickstart their goalscoring again, I think everyone is going to be mentioning Cissé very soon.

Aye your right about davis, think that ones worth the risk though for a 4mil swansea def. Baines I would like but would have to downgrade a mid and struggling with that. Ivan I've had since gw1 so going to ride it out until he gets dropped. Blargh maybe I dont need another risk like naughton then

looking at anytime goalscorer odds pappis cisse is a better captain choice than RVP or Tevez.
and even more likely to score this week is jermain defoe according to the bookies.

    Hi guys,

Team and captains good to go for this week?

Not sure about Michu or Kaca. Gone with Michu as playing at home.

    Jaaskelainen
    Ivanovic - Hangeland - Rangel
    Yaya - Michu - Pienaar - Hazard (c)

Been saving off WCing for when it snows!

Taken two hits so far (RVP and this week with Berba).

    Ruddy (Fed)
    Cole Williams Demel (Zab) (Hangeland)
    Hazard Kagawa Yaya Maloney (Noble)
    RVP Tevez Pog

I know Pog isnt great but I'm kind of stuck with him right now, still have WC left.

Yes Zab is in my plans to be downgraded, that would save me in the region of £1.5M and I already have £0.4M so I would have around £6.8M to spend on Pog replacement (but that only gives me a possibility of Graham or Holt)

If you can't transfer Pog out I'd consider playing Noble in a 3-5-2. Pog was awful last week and barely involved. Wouldn`t surprise me if he was benched on Saturday.

It is risky it`s also a bit risky playing pog after his inept performance last week. Another risky option would be to downgrade zab to Santon or another toon defender therefore freeing up a little more cash to trade Pog for free next week...or just take a hit.
