Signed in the transfer window, both Steven Fletcher and Dimitar Berbatov have wasted little time in acclimatising at their new clubs, turning the heads of Fantasy managers.

Placed snugly in the mid-price bracket, they both look to offer strong solutions to the third striker slot in our squads with other places reserved for expensive heavy-hitters. In that scenario, many Fantasy managers have been forced to choose from these two players – both take form, decent fixtures and almost identical price tags into the coming months.

In this latest article for our Members, we look beyond the goals and points notched so far, exploring the numbers behind their performances in an attempt to offer a solution to this particular selection dilemma.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thought I’d give my two cents worth on the whole 3rd striker issue

Its really between Berbatov, Fletcher, Ba, Lambert and Graham. For most of us we are trying to sell Graham for one of the other four and fair enough too. Graham as been anonymous this season with only 1 goal to show for his efforts despite the free scoring nature of his midfield. He is simply not involved enough.

I would dare to lump Fletcher and Lambert in together as a similar type of player at this stage with both being big target men up front. The obvious differences is that Lambert has set pieces, is cheaper and offers more assist potential, whereas Fletcher is playing for a better team. I think in terms of attack though Southampton has the potential to be just as good as Sunderland this season if not better so I wouldn’t consider the gulf in class between the two sides to be a deciding factor when comparing the two strikers.

So can Fletcher/Lambert out do Ba and Berbatov? For me I find Ba to be a dodgy pick despite his good form. I got burned by Ba last season so take these comments with a massive grain of salt, but for me I’m just not that keen on having a left winger as one of my 3 strikers. Cisse will continue to be the main striker at Newcastle and as such he will receive more chances than Ba simply because he will play more centrally. The exception of course is whether his poor form will see him dropped and Ba takes up the main striker birth, if this happens then Ba could be unstoppable. However I very much doubt Pardew will shift him into that role at the expense of Cisse at this stage and the current nonsense involving his agent doesn’t help his cause, somehow I get the feeling there is a bit of friction between player and manager at the moment.

This article demonstrated just how dominant Berbatov has been since arriving at Fulham. He simply smashes Fletcher and Lambert in the stats and this is obviously down to the form of Fulham compared to Sunderland and Southampton. So then, do we go by the current trend or dare to anticipate that the form fortunes will all of a sudden reverse? I think the answer is fairly obvious for all to see really. Back the form team and their players. To do otherwise is tempting disappointment, none of us has a crystal ball.

Fletcher is indeed a target man. The article was quite clear that he creates few if any chances for opponents while trying to compete airally. Berb receives the ball to his feet a lot more

Backing Ba for a while here, so ill throw a cent in. With his current form, id expect him to continue to play centrally (most of the time) with the exception perhaps of the tougher games with Newcastle may revert back to 4-5-1. Ba has the history to show he is consistent (45 shots last season, 16 goals) and probably plays in the best team of all the choices, so has a little more upside imo.

Berbatov is also a very good option and tbh if I was picking one or the other right now, id pick him just because of the slight price differance and the rumors regarding Ba. Saying that, if your sitting on Ba, your also sitting pretty at the moment and probably smuggly.

Graham was never really in the same bracket as the above. He is a 6.0m striker with a useful strike rate, for a 6.0m option.

Not sure about that. Ba has been complaining how he doesn't like it on the left wing, he clearly is playing more left although may have a tendency to drift more centrally at times. In general I have a problem with that 'risk' of him playing wide. If Pardew changes to a 442 though he could be worth it for sure. The trouble is though that HBA plays so attacking on the right that its the shape will change into a 433 with Ba going more left to keep the balance right.

Looking at the stats so far, Ba has registered a very healthy amount of shots and got 3 goals in four. Which is pretty much in line with last year. Not sure how exactly Newcastle are playing, I have heard they start 4-4-2 and it changes throughout the game to a 4-3-3, barring the Everton match this week.

Tbh, barring Ba getting rotated or spending significant minutes on the left, I don't think choosing between Berba and Ba will define anyone's season majorly. Both look good optons at the moment.

I have being sitting on Ba for a few weeks now, so until something changes i'm a happy camper. If it does, Berba is my preferred route! (I also owned Podolski from the start, so a bit in love with the mid priced options at the moment)

I agree with your synopsis on the change in formation as the game progresses, I have noticed that too. I have also noticed the agitation and suspequent quotes of his dissatisfaction since Cisse arrived last year and how he affected his role and influence in the team. I think Ba has done well so far because Cisse has been poor. Ba was needed and he has delivered, I just wonder about the longer term situation and what would change once Cisse finds his mojo once again. In summary I agree with you that Ba is currently a good choice. But IMO this is only because Cisse is out of form and Newcastle need Ba to get the goals, I don't think this situation will last.

If my aunt had cajones, she would be my uncle 🙂

Ba did slow down last year, when Cisse started his run. But if you look at the stats over a year period, he still had very sustainable numbers and perhaps was unlucky to not score more. Cisse had unsustainable numbers. They look much the same really id say over the course of a season.

If your picking a 3rd striker now, id give it a week and scout the pair this weekend. See how Berba does away and where Ba lines up. If they do equally well, Berba as the real question mark over him is how will he perform away.

You raise a fair point. Cisse may have just had a good run at the end of last season and it could be a one off. If he does indeed become more average this year then I agree, Ba could become a very desirable asset indeed. I guess I can only really go on previous trends though, no doubt time will tell.

Not a bad option. He is the only in for striker for Newcastle at the moment, they could once again rely on him to bring home the goods. I'd say neither is a good captaincy shout when compared to Hazard and RVP though. I'm assuming you have neither, thats a bit unfortunate.

Looks reasonable just downgrade Jenk to a 3.9 def or similar and upgrade McCarthey to someone like Begovic or Guzan.

I see some people say Rafael is a rotation risk but only once Jines and Smalling are back to 100% fitness. You seem to have the decent budget defenders who will fill in should he be rotated in the future anyway.

Also Fulham were better at home then away last season but they nevr had someone of the class of Berbs. sot and rdg are two of the more enticing away fixtures you are likely to get.

Remember when we all had a big 5 midfield last year? That situation could happen again giving you a reason to spend a transfer on a 5th mid at some stage. The threat of rotation for big hitting Citeh and United strikers could warrant that situation to happen again at some point. Especially if the mid priced strikers continue to do well and be consistent. I wouldn't concern yourself too much with the idea of having a long term nailed on 5th mid. Just get Sterling and be satisfied till the FF landscape inevitably changes, especially with CL and players returning from injury etc.

    Current team:
    DDG
    Cole Zabaleta Demel
    Bale Michu Maloney Noble
    RVP Tevez Torres
    Subs: Federici Clyne Britton Tierney
    +2.0

Narrowed it down to these two options:
    A. Torres, Noble, DDG to Berba, Hazard, Foster (4pt hit)
    B. DDG, Zab to Foster, Baines (left with 1.7 in the bank)

    What do ya guys think?

Two options. Initially it seems obvious, but let me explain

    A. Zab > Ridgewell
    B. Zab > Baines

Now, Baines seems better, but I like WBA's fixtures, and am eyeing up an Ivanovic > Baines move after GW 7 if I dont do it now. And going Ridgewell opens funds for a cheeky Kagawa > Cazorla when the mood takes me. But am I going to regret not having Leighton over the next couple?

It depends I guess. Mirallas has a decent scoring record and looked sharp in debut in cup. Looks a good threat-greedy as redforlife says. There's something to work with so it's potentially worth the punt. Personally I wouldn't anyway and it looks like he has already made a transfer so would be for a hit?!!

Not worth the hit IMO. Puncheon has a decent fixture and has assists in his last 2 against tough opposition. Either play him or if you take the hit play safer and go for berb/fletcher etc who you'd be more than happy to keep a few weeks.
