Signed in the transfer window, both Steven Fletcher and Dimitar Berbatov have wasted little time in acclimatising at their new clubs, turning the heads of Fantasy managers.

Placed snugly in the mid-price bracket, they both look to offer strong solutions to the third striker slot in our squads with other places reserved for expensive heavy-hitters. In that scenario, many Fantasy managers have been forced to choose from these two players – both take form, decent fixtures and almost identical price tags into the coming months.

In this latest article for our Members, we look beyond the goals and points notched so far, exploring the numbers behind their performances in an attempt to offer a solution to this particular selection dilemma.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Who wants to help out the pitiful American? 1.5 in pocket, a free tranny and team is currently:

    Jaaskelainen SUN (H) (F’n DDG)

Fox AVL (H) Williams EVE (H) Lescott ARS (H) (Boyce, Gorkss)

Yaya Toure ARS (H) Snodgrass NEW (A) Hazard STK (H) Michu EVE (H) (Britton)

Lambert AVL (H) Van Persie LIV (A) Tevez ARS (H)

Think my back side needs attention, thoughts?

I'd play Boyce instead of Fox and save the transfer Captain. Then next week you can do DDG to whoever you like and Lescott to Baines.

Baines for Lescott is what I'd do, could wait a week but think Arsenal could score. That a sort DDG out before he drops again.

Thank you fellas, will watch droppers and risers.

Fox struck gold for me last week despite the -3, guess it's Boyce To Men time

agreed, I want Lescott and DDG gone next.

Baines is sexy with all that attacking prowess

I like Begovic, 20 H/A away with Jassk is nice, am I mad?

Shall I go N.Taylor OUT Santon IN 1 free transfer done...OR Pog & Zabaleta OUT Berba & Lowton IN 4 point hit. (not going for a west ham defender as I've got jussi in goals)

If I did the 1st transfer, who would you play out of Britton/Pog? What a choice, eh?

I'm going by my own team, he looks like a great option home to Southampton, Have you never ever captained a midfielder? You sound like you probably play it safe a lot but a one week punt for captaincy can work wonders. Your comment was still pretty lame either way. I captained Kagawa the 2nd week and he scored, I don't think I'll ever captain him again but it worked didn't it...so no point in saying FAIL when it's always a gamble who you captain.

And for your information, Pienaar was my highest scoring midfielder last week so ironically your claim that he's useless as a captain would seem to be a little misguided, I regret NOT captaining him.

That's some incredible stats alright, he was amazing the back end of last season and loves playing for Everton clearly. Working out those averages is important because he basically only played half a season so is a little under-rated. But if he had played it all he'd have a massive overall score.

    Foster (Jaas)
Baines - McAuley - Demel (Boyce) ( Clark)
Hazard - Santi - HBA - Bale (Sterling)
    Poldi - Berba - Tevez

Shall I leave the subs as is? Or play Jaas over Foster, and Boyce over Demel. This way I get Wigan covered and not double up on WBA. Though I'm thinking neither WBA or WHU are bad to double up on.

Also, captain issue. Bale or HBA?
Not gonna go Hazard, cause the leader in my minileague is captaining him, and is 40 points ahead..

You shouldn't worry about being 40 points behind, its a marathon not a sprint. I still think Hazard is the better captaincy option and you shouldn't concern yourself with who your opponent will captain this early in the season.

The GW6 transfers are a bit silly you don't need to take a hit and spend a transfer on your keepers, they are fine. GW 7 transfers look reasonable though.

I'm on my WC and I have have been settled on the template side for some time. However I am considering an alternative solution that involves two positions. Who would you rather have?

    A) Berbatov + Nelson(rotating with Demel & Davies)
    B) Lambert + Gallas(will start most of the time with Baines & Gibbs)

Having checked the defensive stats, Spurs rate quite highly and Gallas is a bargain at 5m. It also reduces the need to have a dodgy defender like Nelson who would have to play half the time.

Finally Lambert is about to embark and a stellar run of fixtures, particularly after the Everton match in GW6. This and the general idea of Berbatov struggling away could sway me.

Would really appreciate your help lads, cheers.

Fair call. This situation will tempt me till deadline day no doubt. Not many are considering Lambert as a viable alternative to Berbatov, is Berba that much a better option though? if he is then surely A) is still better because attacking players always trump defensive players.

As far as I know he is a winger so should play instead of Routledge. He was their big signing this year so should be nailed on once he gets to grips with the PL

Do you have enough to do Berbatov & Wilson of Stoke, Ryan? I've just been having a tinker with the defenders and something like Baines, Gibbs , Wilson, Demel & Uber-cheapy looks very good for the next few weeks.

I have Begovic in goal so I'm not sure on doubling up on stoke. My current defence is

        Foster, Begovic
        Baines, Gibbs, Demel, Davies, Nelson

Ok, why not sell Gibbs if he rises today and get a WBA defender. You can play the Brommie until Sagna comes back, swap them and maybe show a profit as well as get more points. I have no idea if that will work, it's just a thought.

Cheers for the tip. Your right, Gibbs isn't essential for the next couple of weeks but the the double up troubles me once more. I have Foster in goal so I'm not sure, then again I would just go for it in the short term and sell for Sagna down the track.

I'm assuming the idea would be to spend the extra cash on a more nailed on defender but thats also assuming I will have the spare cash down the line to sell the brommie for Sagna. Its a nice idea and it may just work as price rises and drops will reduce the price gap. Thanks, I will consider it.

its such a close call, if u take the ticker down to 10 wks from week 5/6 the saints look a very good bet indeed. was always goin for lambert n baines in wk6 then cazorla in wk7 and still see no real reason why those fixtures should prove quite profitable. it was always my worry goin into wk 4 that someone would go nuttys and force me to reconsider my original plan, i can really see the argument that berba is a different proposition to the fulham team as you really wouldnt put any money at all on fulham producing form away from home but berba......maybe and certainly better odds than backing fulham. fulhams supply is also very good as av been all over kaka for two weeks hoping to see him nailed on for a transfer

Yeah having checked the stats again Fulham defy the odds by having the most shots on target in away games out of the whole PL. That's pretty compelling stuff although I realise that's only as a result of the two away games teams have had so far.

im certainly convinced by all the stats ole berbawank looks a well suited third striker....seems my decision is on whether i want cazorla in wk 7 as berba means i cant do that, but i suppose my original point was how good the saints fixturs look and as the focal point in his side with goals scored already against the manc clubs then lambert and beter players else where may very well tip the balance and prove the perfect fit for the third striker

Yeah, I am wary of trusting Fulham in the wake of the Saints upcoming fixtures. It is indeed an interesting dilemma, especially as that 1m could be quite handy elsewhere in the team.

Now I get the full perspective on the Swansea defence situation, they are screwed!!

"Ashley Williams has emerged as an injury doubt ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash with Everton.
The Welsh club are already without Neil Taylor (broken ankle), Kyle Bartley (thigh), Chico Flores (suspension) and Garry Monk (back), with Alan Tate and Ben Davies coming into the side for the defeat at Aston Villa.
... midfielder Kemy Agustien, who would have been a candidate to replace the centre-half, has been ruled out with a calf injury."

    http://www.espnstar.com/football/premier-league/news/detail/item859250/Williams-an-injury-doubt-for-Swansea/

Maybe it's time for me to get Pienaar in for a mid. Which, though.

That would open up a whole realm of possibilities. Who on earth would we have as our main strikers? I'd be stumped if the situation was this week. I may end up considering a big 8 and subbing the player with the worst fixture.

I agree, and the way he's treating him as preciously as RVP is a good sign. He's going to be the difference this year if they are going to add something extra and unpredictable to their game. Once he gets going I think we're going to see an amazing player.

Yeah, he is a bit of a mystery now. He has workrate, he has made some attacking contributions, but he's also been subbed off early in several games and not looked exactly lethal.

This makes me want to get Baines for a 4 point hit, I'm getting him in anyway after but it's tempting, I think I'd end up regretting it though, he basically needs to score for it to be justified. The odd thing is I'm considering getting Davies in too. Hopefully their injury worries will be over by the next game.

Can't wait for the matches to kick off now, worried McClean might fall before the deadline, he is about 1000 off. If he can just get over that line and score a goal maybe people will start getting him in again. I want to keep him for Wigan at home and then ditch him. I had a soft spot for the lad because of my affinity with the team he plays for but at the moment Fletcher is the only player worth having. I hope we get more than 4/5 shots at least this weekend, MON has played seriously defensive tactics so far. I think he's waiting for the team to gel a bit before allowing that bit of freedom to be more creative. We definitely need AJ back.

Most likely ditching Terry and Lescott after the games as I want Baines and need to free up cash for Berbatov/Aguero.

Yeah it's been tough, but was MON deliberately parking the bus for all of them? Is it that plausible that a great attack is there but he's turned it off? I think they have problems going forward, MON complained about Sess' performances recently, and just seems to be a general lack of creativity.

The only thing is McClean is genuinely the most attacking player in the team. When you watch him he can be such a threat and he believes in his ability a lot which means he has the confidence to do something special. Sess is a bit off the pace and more of a stylish playmaker. McClean is so aggressively attacking in his style, which makes him quite appealing in FPL. I'd love if he got some returns but as you said MON is really blocking our overall creativity with his negative tactics. I think we're on a bad run too, haven't won a game in 10+ matches (if you include last season).

I know about that run, was pretty shocked. But at the same time you're unbeaten this season with three draws against three good teams. Just shows the toughness MON has coached into them.

Alright, I think I'm down to these two options, with my 2 free transfers.

First will be Petric > Ba, but needing 0.7m to finance it.

    Jussi
    Baines - Cole - Vertonghen
    Bale - Cazorla - Yaya - Kagawa
    Tevez - Graham - Petric
    (Federici - Noble - Hangeland - Clyne)

    Better option?
    A: Kagawa > Pienaar
    B: Vertonghen > Ridgewell

United's fixtures over the next six say I may be able to go without Utd coverage, but yes, Jigsaw, the second option sees me doubling up on Man City, Tottenham & Everton. A means I'm only doubling on CIty. A good point, thankyou.

Not sure if its been discussed, haven't been able to read many non dead-zone posts, but is there any reason to believe Fellaini will be pushed up again with Jelavic out, or will it be Mirallas and Naismith playing furthest forward?

I've kept thinking Fellaini will drop back into the hole and he hasn't, even with Jelavic, Naismith and Mirallas all available. Watching him against Newcastle it was evident the "boot the ball up to the big man tactic" is here to stay and hence his position is too.

I think Fellaini is very likely to start in the hole. As to who's up front, there is a little uncertainty as it could be Anichebe who scored in the last game (though I didn't see much movement from him) or Mirallas. Naismith has been a bit of a funny one, looking at his average position he has been deployed on right wing, but surprisingly deep. Maybe they were all brief and unrepresentative sub appearances.

Sorry, so he was playing in the hole vs. Newcastle? I was working and couldn't catch it. I saw the line-up with Mirallas & Jelavic and assumed Fellaini was playing as a CM

I had a feeling Naismith was being played Right wing too, from watching MOTD. I don't know much about him but was curious how he fitted into the system they play. I noticed against Newcastle, Mirallas seems to love taking long shots, which might not be a great thing in FPL terms. Seem to remember him having a good few strikes from far out. Maybe he's going to play like this and let Jelavic be the poacher on the rebounds etc which is what he does best.

Yep you're right, definitely recall two long shots, at least one of which was saved. I thought MIrallas was dangerous, he was moving central a lot and making runs into the box. He was definitely playing on the right, but maybe more of what you'd call a right attacking midfielder than a winger. (Sorry for saying RW just above!)

Just a tip. I have noticed in recent weeks that the early game has ended 0-0. There was a phase last year at the start of the season that was similar. I wonder if the heat of the day at this time of the year has an affect.

I'm 85% sure I'm gonna cut RVP in my wc now. With Rooney more or less back and Man U's fixtures I'm hoping the upgrades in my team will make up for the occasional RVP brace that I miss out on.

        Jassi

        Baines, Ivanovich, Naughton, Ridgewell, Hughes

        Bale, Hazard, Santi, Pienaar, Sterling

        Berba, Ba, Tevez

This is the team I can build without RVP. I think its as balanced as it gets and can downgrade Ivan to rafael when the time comes and then use that to maybe get Pod when Arsenal's fixtures get better.

That's a dangerous looking team. No Michu and No RVP could actually be positive differentials, since those you have replacing them will score probably just as well (if not better) AND you get more quality in the other positions. Who's your other keeper?

Trying to pick my starting XI logically, especially my defence. It's been so hard picking two to start between Boyce, Rangel and Demel. Maybe it would simplify things to establish what I believe will happen this weekend:

Swansea to fail to keep a clean sheet against Everton - bench Rangel?
West Ham to get a clean sheet against Sunderland (home defensive form and Sunderland's attacking form) - play Demel?

Which of course implies I play Boyce for Wigan at home to Fulham. Unfortunately I also have a feeling that Fulham with added Berbatov will deprive Wigan of a clean sheet too.

Looking at attacking players through the same lens, I suppose getting Pienaar and Berbatov might be good calls...

Berba gonna do mad damage is week. Demel should play for sure then but not sure about the other spot. Swansea have big issues at the back so I don't expect much from them defensively anytime soon. Sorry this might not have been very helpful

Makes sense don't worry. Basically play Demel. Still torn between Boyce and Rangel, but maybe Boyce might concede fewer goals and is playing further forward.

Yeah he has a pretty good record vs them. Defensively they were poor vs a not 100% united and Hes gonna be buzzing from being a first team starter again. I know fulham historically have been poor away but they have never had a player like Berba and I'm hoping he can bring that to an end.

That seems to be the consensus. They have loads of shots on goal, and have kept it up away this season. I think Wigan also have injury problems at the back - Alcaraz is a big doubt. Ramis isn't very steady.

I actively manage my team to avoid remorse. Two 4.0 defenders, one 4.5 mid, bench settled. I can live with points on my bench if I had little choice over my team. Demel is starting to punch above his weight though, which I welcome. And I'm playing Puncheon right now... so they pull their weight too
