We take our final bite from Gameweek 5 to chew over a Saints striker running amok, the relentless march of the blue side of Merseyside and the team sheet fallout from a week of Champions League action…

The Player

Rickie Lambert has adjusted to top-flight football with ease – his quality in and around the box apparent from the moment he took the field from the bench at City in Gameweek 1. The strike at the Etihad hinted he could more than deliver on his budget Fantasy price tag and further returns against United and a brace in the win over Villa have confirmed this.

Lambert’s confidence is now flowing, just in time for the Saints’ fixture list to ease and hand the marksman every opportunity to add to his tally. There’s even ambitious talk of rivalling Robin Van Persie’s strike rate from Lambert himself…

“I want to be in the race for the Golden Boot. It is a massive achievement to win it. I will give it a good go and try my best. There are so many good strikers out there now but who knows? It could be my year…If you can say I am up there with Robin van Persie at the end of the season in terms of goals I will be very happy.â€

If the Saints forward can even get close to chasing Van Persie’s goal tally as the season progresses then he will be on course to deliver spectacular value on his price tag. Currently we’ve seen just a small increase to 6.1 in Fantasy Premier League, while a value of 6.8 in the Sky Sports game is pushing us towards a 4-3-3 formation.

Strangely, perhaps, the pace of Lambert’s bandwagon trails others out there. Currently, both Steven Fletcher and Demba Ba are attracting more interest and with Dimitar Berbatov also a major consideration, it appears that we’re spoilt for choice for options to freshen our forward lines. Clearly, Southampton’s indifferent form and a tough trip to Goodison this weekend are still deterring many from jumping on board .

However, Lambert has shown he has the quality to aspire to become a “fixture proof†asset and with assured starts, spot-kicks and a blossoming fixture list, there appears to be little standing in the way of him becoming a key figure in our Fantasy squads in the weeks to come.

The Team

Everton are looking irresistible right now, so much so that overloading on three of their players for the weekend clash with a porous Southampton defence looks alluring. And this is without Nikica Jelavic in the mix – he is set to return to the squad for the midweek Capital One cup tie to add an extra ingredient.

David Moyes’ side have demonstrated they can compete with the very best at Goodison in earning three points against United in Gameweek 1, and have since shown both goalscoring threat and a resolute defence, with the defeat at West Brom their only real blip so far.

Saturday’s demolition of Swansea at the Liberty was ruthless. Forget the red card for Nathan Dyer, Everton were dominant before this and should have put the game to bed in an opening half-hour period which saw both Marouane Fellaini and a rejuvenated Victor Anichebe terrorise a weakened Swans backline.

Fellaini has succeeded in edging above team-mate Steven Pienaar in our thinking again – having lost the mantle following the South African’s stunning creative show against Newcastle, Felliani’s goal threat just can’t be denied. Both appear assured picks for the Saints clash and one of the pair looks almost essential for a run of Gameweeks that should cement the Merseysiders’ place in the top six.

As for Leighton Baines, we surely cannot sing his praises further. While big outlay on our defences is jarring, Baines should be considered as a winger with clean sheets thrown into the bargain. He continues to offer a relentless supply of chances from the left flank and Everton appear to have the confidence and quality to gain from them.

The Talking Point

The decision to bench Carlos Tevez for Sunday’s meeting with Arsenal confirmed that Roberto Mancini will, along with the man in charge on the other side of Manchester, provide Fantasy managers with plenty of concern as the season unfolds. Tevez was given just 23 minutes to maintain his record of returns in every Gameweek so far and duly drew a blank for his owners.

That failure came in a week that again saw both Michu and Eden Hazard fail to deliver – the latter subbed on hour-mark as Champions League rotation took a bite out of our Fantasy squads.

City next face European action against Dortmund a week on Wednesday, three days before taking on Sunderland at the Etihad. While we can likely look to Tevez to earn a start at Fulham next weekend, there has to be concerns that Mancini will call on him and Aguero against the Germans, perhaps limiting their pitch time in the fixtures around the European clash.

Chelsea have the Danes, FCNordsjaelland, up next following their trip to the Emirates: an easier task, perhaps but the depth of Roberto Di Matteo’s options, boosted by the form of Oscar and the gradual return of Juan Mata to full sharpness, is a concern. Victor Moses is also doing his best to earn starts with two appearances from the bench that have drawn the plaudits. It seems his days of frustrating Fantasy managers have taken on a new twist.

A fortnight ago the Van Persie – Tevez – Hazard holy trinity looked impenetrable and the foundation that offered Fantasy success. Now we find ourselves doubting the integrity of all three as mid-price assets push for inclusion to break up the heavy-hitters’ monopoly.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Hello guys!

I am stucked with some players I would like to get rid of. But I have only 1 FT for the upcoming GW. So the question is which one and for who, should I decide to change now?

I have 2.0 mln in the bank.

    Zabaleta
    Noble
    Torres
    Graham

I'd appreciate all advices and suggestions 🙂

Either Torres or Graham. You're losing valuable attacking points by having in-form strikers in your team.

Tevez and Aguero are the first choice strike pairing. Balotelli and Dzeko will take starts from them though, especially around CL games.

    Foster Beg

    Baines Rafael Hughes Demel Nelson

    Santi Fellaini Michu HBA Sterling

    RVP Tevez Fletcher

    1.2m in the bank

    Any thoughts?

Okay, two questions for you chaps.

Firstly, do I transfer Federici our (sensible but pretty dull) or one of Torres or Tevez (a much fruitier option)?

Secondly, is the Fantasy Football App worth it for £1.50, given you can just use the mobile internet site?

Joking aside, I'd get rid of Torres first. Tevez should start the next one and the opportunity cost of having a crap striker is more than a injured keeper.

I don't see the point in the app since the mobile site works just fine.

I am thinking of getting Ramirez, Nolan etc for Michu after GW8 perhaps.

If I want Fellaini I have to act now or soon, I can sell Michu for 7.1

Flick this lot a score out of 10 for next GW if you please:

    Begovic
Baines (VC) - Invanovic - Demel
    Fellini (C) - Hazard - Michu - Piennar
    RVP - Graham - Tevez

    Foster - Kacaniklic - Cullear - Jenkinson

Looks good but I am not sure on fellaini armband. I think RVP has more potential to rack up a big score and with everyone jumping on the Fellaini/Banes wagon I have a bad feeling they won't score all that big.

Psychobingo still about? Metrsacker is reading the game like Rio! Also, this.

    Wenger’s View – The Official Manager’s Email – 24 September”

    “Dear Arsenal supporter,

I was pleased with Sunday’s result because a point was the minimum we deserved when you consider what we put into the game.

I was happy also with the quality of our display and our spirit, but I was also a bit frustrated because I feel there was an opportunity to pick up all three points. We had early chances and very late chances, especially when Gervinho missed the target from the edge of the box.

Overall I hope that a result like this will reinforce our belief and confidence and reassure us about our potential in this league.

We conceded a goal from a corner and I take that criticism on board, but it’s worth noting that Manchester City are the team who score more goals than anyone else from set pieces.

At the other end of the pitch it is true that we missed chances, and it’s important to be clinical in games like this, but I believe that will come. When you have the basic quality that we showed on Sunday, the rest can improve.

Vito Mannone had another good game in goal. He looks very solid. He made a little mistake on the corner for Man City’s goal, but I am happy that it didn’t affect his game after that. I like what he is doing.

I can confirm that Thomas Vermaelen did not play because he had ‘flu so we left him at home.

Laurent Koscielny had a great game and stepped in very well. We have a number of classy centre backs, and it is a very difficult choice. No matter who is left out, they will feel disappointed. But I will rotate the centre backs and take into consideration the strikers we will face.

    Thanks for your support.”

Center backs will be rotated. Presumably Koscielny and Mertesacker, but if interpreted literally might have a think about Verm. Fullbacks FTW.

What kind of letter is this? Im still certain that Vermaelen wont be rotated in league games. He`s their captain, biggest offensive threat in the back 4, and has an attitude like none other they have. And with Gibbs playing the way he has, he owns that LB spot atm. I think Koscielny will have to go back to the bench tbh.

I just did Hazard to Fellaini last night. Sure Hazard might light back up, but Everton are just playing too well. Chelsea have been lagging a little past games, and Hazard has looked a bit fatigued. With Oscar stepping up and Mata coming back into form, i could see him rested more and more, either beeing subbed off or on. And even though you would think he`s fixtureproof, they do have some tough games up ahead. I needed the money to get Cazorla in later anyway.

He is, and fits in great at a club like Fulham. Personally im looking getting Berb later (have Lambert), i just see Soton as a more fluent attacking side, while Fulham usually are restricted to home results. Although that might change now that Berbagoal is there, hes just so good.

Cazorla certainly have been their best player, but Gervinho is a pretty good shout FPL-wise, if he continues to get starts. Then against some teams he might prefer the muscle of Giroud, also Walcott and Oxlade surely will push for starts sometime soon, and Caz looks immune to rotation atm.

What's happened to all the Michu love? 9k+ transfers out today. Stoke away's not great admittedly, but two great home games after that, surely he deserves more time?

Yep, the only thing is his price might drop sharply if he blanks at stoke because of people who make transfers without looking at the fixtures so be prepared

Fantasy football is all about bandwagons. Him getting consecutive 1-pointers and Everton firing away, im pretty sure thats where all the boys are headed 😉

Honestly - did everyone think he was going to score every gameweek? Madness the lack of foresight and ability to ride with the punches.

I am happy for the transfer-outs to continue. 15 goals in La Liga last year and he came close against Everton a couple of times on the weekend.

I am on the Michu wagon for the long-haul.
