Theo Walcott wants a chance through the middle for Arsenal. Martin Kelly is sidelined with knee ligament damage for Liverpool, Roberto Mancini demands more defensive resilience from City, Nikica Jelavic is back for Everton in the Capital One Cup tonight, while Nemanja Vidic is expected to return for United next weekend…

Theo Walcott has spoken of his determination to nail down the lone forward role for Arsenal this term. Used almost exclusively as a winger by Arsene Wenger, Walcott admitted his future at the Gunners may be influenced by whether he can move centrally:

“Playing up front is important. It’s one of the main factors for me. I signed as a striker. I’ve learnt my trade out on the wing. Hopefully, I’ll get to play up front in the next few games. It’s frustrating being on the bench, but it’s one of those things I have to deal with.”

With Robin Van Persie departed and Olivier Giroud looking somewhat overwhelmed, Wenger has turned to Gervinho to lead the line in the last couple of league games. Although the Ivorian scored twice against Southampton, his overall lack of composure in front of goal is letting chances go astray, as seen on Sunday at City. Walcott has cut a peripheral figure in the new-look Gunners first XI thus far; he’s managed just one start and with Wenger utilising Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Aaron Ramsey on the right in recent games, his game time on the flank has relied on brief sub appearances late on in games. If Gervinho and Giroud continue to falter, Walcott – classified as a midfielder across the Fantasy games – could be an intriguing proposition if Wenger grants him his wish up top.

Martin Kelly has been ruled out for the foreseeable future with knee ligament damage. The full-back picked up the injury in Sunday’s defeat to United and his absence looks likely to earn a recall for Jose Enrique as Brendan Rodgers reshuffles his backline ahead of the trip to Norwich. The Spaniard has been handed just one start this season and although he’s fallen out of favour with the new manager, is expected to get the nod at left-back, with Glen Johnson returning to the opposite flank. Rodgers has trialled Stewart Downing at left-back in the Europa League earlier this season, though, and could once again look to use the winger in defence. Rodgers’ injury worries also include Daniel Agger and Fabio Borini after both were forced off in the Anfield defeat – the club’s website gave this update yesterday:

“Agger….has suffered a significant bone bruise to the left knee. No ligament damage was sustained but further tests will be carried out before it can be established when he will be able to return to training. Borini has considerable swelling to the inner aspect of his right ankle though no fracture was detected on the X-ray. The club’s medical staff will wait for the swelling to reduce before an MRI scan can take place tomorrow to assess any soft tissue damage and determine when he may be able to return to playing.”

Any absence for Agger would see Jamie Carragher and Sebastien Coates vie for the central defensive berth alongside Martin Skrtel, while Borini’s situation stretches Rodgers’ threadbare options to the limit. Teenage winger Suso replaced the Italian on Sunday and may well be tasked with flanking Luis Suarez along with fellow youngster Raheem Sterling if Borini is ruled out of the trip to Carrow Road, although new signing Oussama Assaidi was on the bench at the weekend and is approaching full fitness after a recent injury.

Roberto Mancini has called upon his City defence to step up in performance after a third draw in the first five Gameweeks.

“I’m very sorry for the players because it was difficult after Real Madrid. But I’m worried because we continue to concede goals. We need to improve and we need to work. I don’t know why it’s happening but probably we don’t have enough concentration in some situations. In the last four games we have conceded three goals from set pieces and this can’t happen. I am frustrated but also the players are frustrated because if you want to win, clean sheets are important.”

City have shown little of the resilience that produced 35 clean sheets in the previous couple of seasons – Joe Hart returned 18 last time round but has picked the ball out of the net at least once in every game so far. Mancini is relying on his forwards to secure the points but with just a single goal scored in each of their last two, the failings at the back are proving costly. Vincent Kompany, Gael Clichy and Joleon Lescott have all been shipped out by over 100,000 FPL managers as a result and with plenty of budget-to-mid-price alternatives affording us the chance to free up cash, even the guaranteed game time of Kompany is not enough to stop him is fast falling off Fantasy radars right now.

Meanwhile, Mancini has pleaded with Spain to help him ensure that David Silva is not subject to “burn-out”, again stressing that the playmaker is currently suffering from fatigue.

“It is difficult for him – he is a human being and is probably not 100 per cent. We can only solve this problem by working harder – that’s the only way to improve. I don’t think he needs a rest. He played in the European Championship and after that he twice went travelling to Puerto Rico and to Spain to play Saudi Arabia. That may be the reason he was so tired – he is not fresh. Spain could help us with this.”

Nemanja Vidic is expected to be available for Man United next weekend. The Serbian was left out of the trip to Liverpool as a precautionary measure, according to Sir Alex Ferguson:

“He was just feeling a bit tight round about his knee and we decided just to give him a break. Hopefully he’ll be alright next week.”

Prior to the Anfield visit, Vidic was the only United defender to start the opening four Gameweeks and with clashes against four of last season’s top five in the next five Gameweeks (TOT, new, che, ARS), his return will be crucial to a backline that has returned just one clean sheet so far. Similar to City, though, Ferguson’s rearguard is offering little consistency either in game time or returns – with Branislav Ivanovic, Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines all racking up the points and Rafael offering a cheaper route into the United defence, Vidic is struggling to persuade Fantasy managers of his worth right now – he’s owned by less than 7%, with just eight points accrued thus far.

Staying in the United camp and Patrice Evra has spoken out about the increasing competition for the left-back role following the arrival and sparkling debut from Alex Buttner. Evra watched on while Buttner scored and assisted in the 4-0 win over Wigan but was recalled to the side for the Anfield trip on Sunday. Evra had this to say on the left-back tussle…

“It is too easy for people to say that now we have bought another left-back Patrice Evra will have to fight for his place. Patrice Evra has always fought for his place. If someone is there or not I will fight because you have to respect the shirt. When you play for Manchester United that is the big challenge. When I hear people say Patrice never had someone to fight him for his place I think they have bad memories. They forget very quickly how I got to become Manchester United’s left-back. I fought with two great players in Gabriel Heinze and Mikael Silvestre.”

Fabricio Coloccini and Cheick Tiote could both feature in Newcastle’s Capital One Cup visit to United this Wednesday. Talking ahead of the Old Trafford trip, Alan Pardew revealed:

“We are going to have make sure we can get game time out of the players that will need it. Colo could play, Cheick definitely needs a game, he was rusty, so I will have a word with the staff and hopefully we’ll get a result there.”

The pair have yet to play in the same side this season due to injury. Coloccini has been hampered with a hamstring problem and has played just twice, while Tiote climbed off the sibs bench in Sunday’s win over Norwich to end a three-game absence. As a result, Pardew’s side have registered only one clean sheet to date – with both back on board ahead of next weekend’s trip to Reading, the omens look good against a side that has found the net once in their last two games.

Seb Larsson is set to skip Sunderland’s Capital One clash with MK Dons this evening. The Swede was subbed off just after the hour mark at West Ham due to a “tight hamstring” and with Adam Johnson also unavailable, Martin O’Neill is taking no chances with his first-team right now. Larsson has filled in for Johnson on the right flank of late – the former City man has featured only once in the league since joining the Black Cats due to a thigh problem. With Fraizer Campbell limping out of the Hammers clash with a foot knock, O’Neill will be hoping his injury worries ease a little before Saturday’s visit of Wigan.

Nikica Jelavic is back in Everton’s squad for the Capital One Cup clash with Leeds this evening. The Croatian limped off just before half-time in the Gameweek 4 draw with Newcastle, though the Toffees haven’t lacked firepower, with replacement Victor Anichebe grabbing two goals in his absence. As David Moyes’ side prepare to welcome Southampton to Goodison next weekend, their Fantasy assets are picking up significant interest – Jelavic looks a real captaincy contender for the clash, but with Kevin Mirallas also hitting the goal trail in the win at Swansea, Moyes has plenty options should he decide to ease the Croatian back into league action on Saturday.

        I second that. Bloody hell.

If Mirallas had scored his scored on the first attempt, Pienaars assist would probably be up there too. Very difficult ball to play that, anticipating the position of the incoming forward.

I can't figure out if Mancini is playing SAF-type games or if he is just odd. He seems to be hinting that the League Cup is not a priority and that he will be trying to field his best, most rested side at Fulham. Then he suggests he will start Balotelli and Tevez in the Capital One tonight! Isn't Aguero-Tevez his best front two?

On the other hand, Aguero and Dzeko both started on Sunday and it is only Tuesday, so they can't very well start tonight (ie, Balotelli-Dzeko is not on). Is there anything to read into this? Will Tevez, with nearly four day's rest, start on Saturday at Fulham alongside Aguero? Or are we doomed by the schedule to another Aguero-Dzeko pairing? Aaaarrrggghh!

My big problem is that even if Tevez plays tonight it does not entirely resolve the question. He might be playing purely because of the Sun/Tues situation, and could still play on Saturday with four day's rest IF he and Aguero are what Mancini wants. Of course, it will make a lot of difference to me if Tevez plays 45 minutes or 90 minutes tonight, but starting alone is not the final word.

    Begovic (Foster)
    Baines, Clark, Demel (Figueroa) (Cuellar)
    Pienaar, Cazorla, Hazard, Nolan, Michu
    RVP, Tevez (Lambert)

I have 2 FT and 0m, I could transfer Cuellar so as to have 3 defenders playing at home.

Talk about Fellaini being pushed back when Jelavic returns.

My understanding is Mirallas is a winger/striker, so he could easily move over to the wing instead?

Yeah but the argument put forward is that when Jelavic returns

        - Jelavic takes Mirallas's forward role
        - Mirallas takes Fellaini's current attacking role.
        - Fellaini drops a lot deeper

I just think it could easily be

        - Jelavic takes the forward role, Mirallas is pushed out wide, so Fellaini keeps his current role he's having so much success in.

Mirallas isn't being played in a central role now, I honestly don't see him displacing Fellaini. The way I see it, it will be Mirallas and Pienaar cutting in from the flanks around Jelavic to feed off Fellaini's chaos.

Cool that's what I thought, just seems to have been a lot of opinion the past few days about Jelavic playing means Fellaini will be pushed back, but I didn't think that was the case.

I used the Scout team news to check Mirallas's position and it showed as up front on his own for the weekend.

I did actually watch the game, but was also working and taking care of the baby on my own, so effectively saw the highlights!

Pienaar has great value, even with Fellaini advanced, just if Fellaini drops deep, Pienaar is then probably the better option.

I did that switch last week (Graham to Berb) and did not regret it. Both of your choices would be intelligent--one leaves you with more extra cash and the other is a flair move which could have big upside (and corresponding downside). What's your flavour?

Berba got potential to score big but Lambert looks a real threat and I think the way SOuthampton games have gone so far Lambert could get plenty of goals.

Berba at that price is a bit of a steal though, he's going to be involved in the majority of Fulham goals.

Can't decide, both good picks IMO.

Fletcher won't be converting 100% of his chances forever, but Larsson and Sessegnon aren't going to be combining for 1 chance created for very long either.

There's a talented midfield behind Fletcher when you include players like McClean. Fletcher isn't going to be an elite forward but he's nailed on and he's going to keep returning goals home and away, which may give him a higher upside than Berbatov.

He looks great yes, but as you said 3 might be overkill and 2 everton strikers will be overkill for sure. So it is between Jelly and Mirallas for the striker spot and with Mirallas playing more on the wing Jelly should be the answer.

I’ve got some headaches in my team. Slowly dropping down my league at the moment.
    I have Jaask, Federici,
    Baines, Gibbs, Cuellar, Mcartney, Clyne
    Hazard Yaya Noble Michu Pienaar
    Tevez RVP Graham.

I have problems with Tevez – Aguero back to no. 1. Great time to sell.
Graham, playing poor consistantly. (Lambert Ba or Berbatov maybe)
Mcartney benched (Santon or Hughes maybe)
Federici and Cuellar injured – willing to wait on those 2.

So that leaves me with Mcartney Tevez and Graham as problems. 1 free transfer.
    Any advice please?

Considering a WC..here's my current team:

    Davis Green
    Baines Olsson Rangel MCartney Barnett
    Hazard Michu Carzola Pienaar Guthrie
    RVP Tevez Berba

I have some major problems in defence (No playing GK, Mcartney never starts, Barnett near useless with crappy fixtures).

I have no FT's and .1M in the bank.

So my options are, hold the WC and slowly solve problems (this week take a hit a to move in cheap GK who plays (Maybe begovic))

Or play my WC. Here's a draft:

    Begovic Foster
    Koscienly Baines Demel Rafael Davies
    Hazard Michu Sterling Carzola Pienaar
    Jelavic Aguero Berbatov

    Leaving me 1.2M to spare

    Thoughts?

Not saying they will win it but I wouldn't describe myself as the craziest optimist and I'd give them a reasonable chance.

Mancini prioritising even qualifcation may hinder the league campaign somewhat.

We didn't play our strongest line up in a few games in last year's champs league because he wanted to put almost everything into the league, this year will be different

It was an ok seeding but it meant that with th way thee draws set up, it was almost inevitable that we'd draw 1 of the top 3 teams in the competition (Barca, Madrid or Bayern)

We'll only have a chance to make some real progression when we're in that top group of seeds.

The lack of solidity has to be a short term thing for me, We've got practically the same back line, the same defensive midfeilder and the same manager.

                Solidity will come.

such a tough choice for captain this week, Baines/Pienaar/Fellaini is the likely goer but I think Southhampton will be keen to continue their form, where as all the other so called "big gins" have top 6 team fixtures... so it's got to be:

It has to be aguero from here ,
Tho when I wc if aguero isn't doing the biz at home and hopefully not coming off on 60+ mins ,
Now factor on his relative poor away form and it opens the debate for
        Berb/Ba/lambert/Fletch.

See what happens tonight in the League Cup. Tevez is suspected to start, and if he plays 90 minutes you might want to look into Tevez to Ba or something.

    From the Bluemoon forum

"Mario and Tevez up front according to Ladyman. Happy to hear that as it looks like Villa won't be resting any/many so we need a decent team out. With Silva sure to be rested and Nasri injured I really want Suarez to be given the roaming playmaker role because if he can perform in that match it may convince Mancini he is ready for more big opportunities."

No idea who Ladyman is but im guessing it's someone they look to for team news. Very surprising if Tevez does start, i may have to get rid if he does.

It would make my WC decision-making a hell of a lot easier if I went without Tevez. I'm thinking about ditching him and then moving RVP to Kun in a few weeks. You can get a killer squad with that.

It's an interesting debate though. I'm loathe to go without RVP but if you spread his price out around the rest of the team, there's players who will score you goals/points (and you can captain). I'm sure I wasn't alone in thinking this season was going to be tough in terms of rotation of the big names. Good case for ignoring some of them.

Which players would you go for across the team.

The midfield options aren't striking me as captain goldmine at the moment apart from Cazrola potentially, who I already have.

I am having RVP and Aguero, even though I thought it would weaken my team I'm still quite happy.

I think some of the mid-range strikers are emerging as serious armband contenders. Berbs/Ba/Fletch etc. Hazard, Bale. Fellaini, Santi are all being looked at too. What I'm getting at is that in seasons gone by, it was a simple Ronaldo/Lamps/Gerrard/Rooney/RVP for the armband, and it's not looking as simple as that right now.

That's where I'm at though, my team has most of the ones you mentioned in and doesn't feel week in defence either (like I would have expected).

                  Foster, Begovic
                  Baines, Rafael, Demel, Davies, Gorkss
Cazorla, Fellaini, A Johnson, Michu, Sterling
                  RVP, Aguero, Berbatov

With money in the bank to change Michu to Ben Arfa after the decent fixtures.

Will be easy to go from RVP, Aguero to pick up a "big" midfielder at a later point also.

                    Carzorla Fellaini Michu Sterling Maloney

Still not sure if it's worth getting rid though. It would be a hit for me this week. For all we know he could start against Fullham aswell. Even if he doesn't surely he won't miss 3 prem games in a row and their next game will be Sunderland at home.

Mail has Tevez starting tonight. The logic is simple: Aguero and Dzeko started on Sunday and can't start two days later. Question is will he play the whole game?

Hmmm if Tevez does play tonight, will have me guessing until the weekend about doing my Tevez to Aguero move.

I was holding off as Aguero only just come back and he is better for the home games, but as I have the free transfer and funds, I may pull the trigger in the week.

I think 1 game on the bench is too soon to be changing out Tevez. Especially when you consider in that he's had a massive price gain and therefore would cost a fortune to get back in if (when) he starts racking up the points again.

People tend to employ the "what have you done for me lately?" ideology as is evident by the mass Tevez + Hazard exodus. This game is a marathon not a sprint people! Personally wouldn't mind Tevez's ownership going down really.

    G: Begovic

    D: Baines (C) - McAuley - Clark

How is he 3rd choice striker? Because he didn't start ONE game?! Obviously Aguero + Dzeko wouldn't be candidates to start tonight seeing as they just did 2 days ago. There really isn't any better value for City cover than him.
