Everton’s exceptional form and fixtures find their assets soaring in our Watchlist reckoning this week. Mid-price defensive assets play partner to the attacking verve of Leighton Baines, while up front, our options are plentiful. Too plentiful.

Our Watchlist rankings have been updated and can be found in your sidebar. Read on for the blurb on the key movers this week…

Goalkeepers

Simon Mignolet surges clear in our goalkeeper rankings. There are several factors at play here. Firstly, there’s little doubt that Martin O’Neill has his side playing tight, controlled football – if somewhat unambitious in attacking terms. Sunderland’s fixtures are also fairly favourable, handing the back four home encounters with Wigan, Newcastle and Aston Villa in the next five. Thirdly, while the personnel in O’Neill’s back four is hard to pin down following the injury to Carlos Cuellar, Mignolet appears to offer a secure option at a decent price.

West Brom’s Ben Foster continues to offer value and is retained in second spot in our rankings. Like Sunderland, West Brom have emerged as miserly mid-price contenders and Foster should benefit from his forthcoming fixtures to offer further returns. Unlike Mignolet, however, Foster could lose out in some squads to attractive options in the back four – namely Gareth McAuley and Liam Ridgewell.

Both Merseyside clubs have fixtures that promise defensive returns, although the duo have factors that keep Tim Howard and Jose Reina out of the top places in our rankings. Howard will surely play second fiddle to Leighton Baines in our lineups, with further slots spared for the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Nikica Jelavic. As for Reina, his defence looks set to be ravaged by injury, although home encounters with Stoke and Reading in the next three could still offer short-term benefits.

West Ham’s Jussi Jaaskelainen takes a tumble then, with fixtures stiffening somewhat, while Stoke’s Asmir Begovic is hovering. He looks a very strong option, along with Newcastle’s Tim Krul (when fit), once Gameweek 8 has passed.

Defenders

Leighton Baines has been on top of our Watchlist rankings for three weeks and, in the past two Gameweeks, has shown just why. Early adopters have benefited from a goal and assist in consecutive games, in addition to Saturday’s clean sheet at the Liberty. With fixtures flourishing, Baines looks assured of further returns and is undisputed as the must-have defender right now.

The West Brom defence continues to offer exceptional value with a tit-for-tat battle rumbling between the options – Gareth McAuley, Liam Ridgewell and even Jonas Olsson. The superior of the three is hard to predict but it’s clear that having one of this trio for the coming weeks looks likely to be profitable.

We’re taking a punt on Liverpool’s Glen Johnson, despite injuries in Brendan Rodgers’ back four and a poor string of results. Liverpool could well turn the corner over the next three Gameweeks, however, and Johnson looks set to be in profit from clean sheets with the potential for attacking returns. He’s been a strong influence coming forward in recent weeks and could make a decent differential over the upcoming trio of fixtures.

John O’Shea is your assured option in the Sunderland back four should you neglect the Mignolet option, while Vincent Kompany continues to be a presence in the top echelons of our rankings, despite the continued struggle for clean sheets. City’s fixtures are by far the best amongst the top clubs and, with Roberto Mancini sounding determined to solve defensive lapses, we see fortunes turning for Kompany in the next month.

Stoke’s Robert Huth and Fulham’s John Arne Riise are your differentials further down the rankings. Both will rely on attacking returns in the short-term, although Huth’s fixtures will lighten considerably from Gameweek 8 onwards.

Midfielders

Having opted for Steven Pienaar ahead of Marouane Fellaini last week we are forced to backtrack and reinstate the Belgian this time around. Fellaini climbs to the pinnacle of our midfield rankings, toppling the big guns on the back of his attacking role and strong returns thus far. Fixtures remain favourable and, despite Jelavic’s return from injury, we see Fellaini remaining a factor up top as he continues to look unplayable.

We’ve taken the unprecedented step to also included Pienaar in the rankings, such is the form being shown by David Moyes’ side. The likes of Gareth Bale and Santi Cazorla rank above the South African, while Eden Hazard suffers a decline as form and fixtures factor against him.

Swansea’s Michu also drops with form but has the fixtures to maintain his rank in the short-term, holding off the charge from West Ham’s Kevin Nolan who has shown consistency, even with Andy Carroll sidelined.

Lower down the rankings, both Raheem Sterling and Alex Kacaniklic offer value differentials for the coming weeks. Sterling, in particular, looks a great route to Liverpool’s next three fixtures.

Forwards

Our established heavy-hitting top two come under real threat as a result of recent rotation, with Carlos Tevez suffering a drop, allowing both Dimitar Berbatov and Rickie Lambert to climb above him in our reckoning. To be fair, all three have very strong fixtures to come, although the rotation doubt hanging over Tevez is a concern. Berbatov and Lambert look assured of starts, will be on spot-kicks and have the fixture to flourish for many weeks.

Tevez is still the cover option of choice within the City ranks, although tonight’s start in the Capital One Cup gives further cause for concern. Sergio Aguero could well threaten to replace him in the Watchlist from next weekend, while Yaya Toure continues to offer the only viable option in midfield while David Silva recovers his sharpness and Samir Nasri remains sidelined. City are a potential problem for Fantasy managers right now – excellent fixtures but with instability and uncertainty throughout the lineup.

Back to the rankings and Robin Van Persie is struggling to hold his top spot, particularly with United facing stiff opposition in the coming weeks. We’re banking on the Dutchman to retain his starts and continue to deliver goals, having notched five already in United colours.

There are great options lower down, too. Nikica Jelavic is only kept from our top three by the fact that there are such strong midfield options offering good Everton cover. Jermain Defoe’s form has him hold strong, while Demba Ba has also demonstrated consistent returns to offer another mid-price option. With Steven Fletcher also chipping in with four strikes from as many shots on goal, it’s clear that we’re currently spoilt for choice in this area of our squads. Configuring the right trio looks both vital and decidedly tricky.

Finally, we’re backing Luis Suarez to finally break out and offer yet another alternative over the next month. He travels to Carrow Road this weekend, the scene of a hat-trick last term, which included a spectacular 50-yard effort. The omens are good for Suarez, then, before Stoke and Reading turn up at Anfield in Gameweeks 7 and 8.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Agree. I'm holding on that Transfer. But 120 minutes of competitive football, even I'm a little skeptical.
I don't really fancy Berbatov to do that well against City though. 2 pointer vs a 1 pointer cameo from Tevez.

      I'd rather save.

Bale is up against Rafael. He leaves massive holes in defence when he goes forward and doesn't get back in time. Plus he's a card magnet too. Only one winner in that contest I reckon. Same with Evra and Lennon on the other side.

I figure Spurs will get beaten by a decent margin. That said, United midfield is weak and Spurs`s is good and quite fluid. United back 4 also shaky, but all the same its United at home. I`d be surprised if they get something.

Feck. Tevez playing 120 today really have me wondering. Already used my FT for the week and considering getting Aguero for a hit. Hits are seriously bad, but its even worse having a £10m man not getting starts. And for the next 6 gw im definitely going to want City attacking coverage too.

Idk. I`ve already used my FT, and not sure if its worth it to do Tevez -> Aguero for a hit. My bench is Ivan / Clark / El Ahmadi atm, none of those really tempt this weekend. Ivan obviously first choice because of his goal threat, but i think that game will have plenty of goals. Villa are conceding so much i wish i never got Clark in in the first place :/

So you`d do it, even for a hit? Aguero undoubtedly needs fitness and its not even 100% that he`ll play that much more than Tevez. This weekend sure, but going forward? Also i hate taking hits. Planned to save my transfer next week, then do Michu/Ivan to -> Cazorla and a defender. Only thing this would do is make me get a cheaper defender, which doesnt have to be bad, plenty of decent options.

The sole reason i got Clarke in was that he had loads of goal attempts and the occasional midfield role, but theyre just so leaky, as was Norwich last year. I`m even reluctant to play him this weekend @ home to WBA, which proves it :p

china mag: saw your team on last page. looks spot on. only thing is i'd prefer ba + and one of lambert or fletcher over suarez and jelly.

plus that would probably give you enough extra funds to get another attacking defender such as ivan/cashley

two questions for you: how do you rate qpr defense?
and now i'mm thinking graham + tevez > ba + berb/fletch/lambert for a 4pter and risking playing hangeland vs city if cueller doesn't play. what do you think?

To be honest, i don't particularly rate the QPR defence (but appear to be improving). But Nelson works beautifully in rotation with Saylor/Cuellar, hence me looking at him.

I am seriously considering Lambert (not fletcher) over Jelavic, but will be rotating Berba with a southampton mid, so not sure I want to double up (might still do it though)

I will probably get ba (or dave) in for suarez if he fails.

Chelsea's fixtures are horrible so i won't be going anywhere near their defence. If I go for lambert over jelavic, I would get big verm for gibbs, and foster for jaask

I don't think you should take a 4pt hit, unless you want fletcher for the long term, i doubt berb or lambert will score more than one this week.

ok, me neither. leaning towards demel over nelson then.

see my post below about the team i'd get if i wildcarded

make that rafa over a chelsea defender. i wouldn't get verm over gibbs. possible rotation between the 3 cb's and gibbs is providing great attacking threat

good point. hmmmm beginning to wonder if the wc is my best bet then as i really want to make 2 transfers this week....

I can't see him starting this weekend, after 120 mins yesterday and champions league on tuesday. No way. Future game time is unknown, but the simple fact is that they have 4 international class strikers (plus the mids to play just one up top), and a really hard champions league group, which will unlikely be decided before the end.

I wonder which (communist controlled propaganda) source he heard that from 😀

The islands are in the area of the old Ryukyu island kingdom which served as a trading region between China and Japan in old times. The Ryukyus are now Okinawa prefecture and has since long been a part of Japan.

The old Chinese Qing Dynasty had no dealings with these islands.

But then obviously I get my information from the US/Japanese side, so who knows what is right 🙂

The Okinawan guvnor should really cease upon this, claim these oil and fish resources, and launch a independence claim. Could do it with Scotland to get international legitimacy as well. This way neither China, Japan (or Taiwan for that matter) can claim these.

      nice team
      here's my two cents:

I think RVP is worth the cash and therefore would squeeze him in for aguero and switch out kagawa for someone like nolan, michu, de guzman (waiting for one of his screamers to go in) or yaya (not really possible tho i guess)
I also have berbs instead of fletch coz I think he sees more of the ball and has assists, set pieces penos plus similarly decent fixtures to one trick pony fletcher (admitedly that one trick is scoring EVERY time he touches the ball)

      love the backline

Ba not the best fixtures after this gameweek. Kagawa has tough fixtures and not nailed on for starts, especially once Roon is back. Other then that looks good.

Not loving Kagawa. Usually goes off around the hourmark and doesnt really impact games as much as i thought he would. United have tough fixtures as well. Same goes for Fletcher, dont really see him keeping on keeping on, Berba or Lambert in for him if i was you. Other than that looks fine.

Hold onto Fletcher for this GW , and change him for Berba next week.
Surely not kagawa , Roon will be back and will take him gametime.

There is enough quality elsewhere for that money.

if i were to wc right now i think i'd go for the following:

    foster, jaask
baines, gibbs, rafa to play most weeks and then cueller and hughes for solid bench options and the possiblity to play 4 in the back
bale, cazorla, hba, pienaar, mf 8.6 or less
    ba, berb, fletch

or hazard + lambert instead of fletch + 8.6 mf

planning to keep hold of my wc but i'm very tempted by this team. no rotation worries up front but 3 quality forwards who should all score well. 5 strong mf's, 3 good attacking backs with good chance of cs too and two cheap defenders that can be rotated for a possible 4th def spot if you want from teams pretty solid at the back and two solid gk's

and you should always have at least one or two strong captain choices based on fixtures. and even if not the team is balanced enough that you should score well even if you mess up the captain choice

    what do you guys think?

Couple things: I dont really like having 5 solid mf`s, for the reason that i play 3-4-3 and that would mean benching an expensive mf every round. Sunderland`s fixtures arent all that fantastic either, so i`d look into those two things if i were you.

not actually wc but just throwing an idea out

see the idea is that you rotate your 8 attackers as to bench the player with the hardest fixture. if you don't fancy sunderland's fixtures there's a simple fix: lambert instead of fletcher then

But then you would have to bench one of your midfielders every week? Or even Lambert who`s got 4 already, 26 penalties in a row and plays for a team that scores goals on anybody? I`d rather have atleast one cheap midfielder and spread the money somewhere else, preferably RVP or Aguero. Rotation issues or not, theyre playing for the best teams in the league. Guaranteed to rack up points over the season.

BOOM!! Very similar to mine, so I like!!

Not sure about rafael with man utds fixtures and no vidic. Worth it for attacking points?

I don't think that sunderlands fixtures are good enough to warrant playing fletcher most games, and there is no-one obvious to rotate with him.

Why not foster/begovic? Much better rotation

After chatting above, my potential mid has both afro and peanut, (no southampton mid) and rotate Berba/Lambert!!

But I would probably still look to downgrade one of the everton mids to a southampton mid when a) either peanut or afro drop form or b) ramirez or lallana prove to me they should be in my team. Then I would play lambert every game

Grrr... News on Tevez has got me itching to use the WC. It really is more stressful having 1. I've gone through this the last 3 weeks, and hasn't looked good to use it till midweek when all the rises are gone.

How much cash is usually made over a normal week 0.2? & over a international break 0.4?

Few people asking about Cuellar...gonna be "out for a few weeks". O'Neill yesterday morning talking about Bramble also..."don't think he's ready for 3 games in a week". Hence being bench for cup match and means he's nailed on again Wigan and also prob for next couple of games too.

Bramble comes in at 4.3 and by all account had a great game against West Ham so if he keeps that up then chance are even when Cuellar does return he may not go back into starting 11...

I went Tevez to Berbatov, I have a feeling Berbatov is gonna be one of those players that every time he scores he also gets 3 Bonus Points

Yeah, his PPI index is great, just look at the score he got this weekend with nothing but one single assist.

    Evening folks..

Anyone watch the Everton game? How did Jelavic and Fellaini look??

Caught the 2nd half. Jelavic only got 15 minutes and wasnt involved at all, Fellaini had a few long range efforts and came close to reaching a cross or two. Thing is, Fellaini needs service, and without Baines Everton just dont have it. Pienaar came on at HT and even he is affected by no Baines.

I saw the first half. Fellaini looked clumsy in his CM role but obviously got forward for the odd set-piece

Fellaini played CM first half, but moved back up front at half time..they lacked Baines' service and his combination with Pienaar..

Using the logic applied to Tevez, Fellaini played a full game but nobody seems to be worried about him being benched. And it's not like Everton dont have options to play his spot...

Everton have a much smaller squad. They had no choice really but to play Fellaini.

Well, actually they dont. Who do they have that can play in his place and do what he does? City have 4 option, Everton have virtually none. Gibson injured as well..

Besides, Everton dont have a very important CL game 4 days after that again.

Couldnt Anichbe, Naismith, Mirallas or even Osman all play his spot?? I'm not a Everton fan so I'm just assuming here..

Mirallas playing wide right because thats where Moyes wants him long term. For the last 6 months all of Evertons attack have been on the left, he`s looking to add to that. Anichebe cant play in the hole, and with Jela not starting he had to play up front. Naismith coulda played i guess. Guess Fellaini is just that fit that he doesnt mind playing 3 games in one week. No way hes not starting this weekend.

Osman has been playing CM and Mirallas has been playing on the LW in all matches so far.
Naismith is a possibility but he's more likely to rotate with Mirallas and not Fellaini. And Anichebe is just poo. He'll play when Jelavic isn't match fit.

Is it worth the risk to keep Tevez save a transfer then get Lambert after the Everton clash? Seems reasonable no? or can we see Lambert scoring away to Everton and Tevez not doing much either.

Yes, yes and yes. Tevez can play and if he does, he can do well, even though its Fulham away. Lambert can surely get something, pens and freekicks and freescoring Soton.

Ryan, I thought it was worth waiting to see if petric would play before switching to lambertgini... that didn't work out so well for me... I can see lambert scoring anywhere

Fair call. I may have to get him, I'm fairly sure Tevez will be benched but you never know. If Lambert can score away to Everton then why not get him now.
