It’s time to draw the curtain on Gameweek 6 and consider the mercurial gifts of Liverpool’s Uruguayan, the emerging pool of talent at White Hart Lane and the struggle to settle on class over form…

The Player

Luis Suarez’ performance at Carrow Road was, for the second season running, a demonstration of his genius. Three sublime finishes – perhaps atypical of a player who has so often frustrated, knocked the stuffing out of the Canaries and propelled Suarez up our Watchlists.

The Uruguayan could be a supreme Fantasy talent. His numbers suggest that returns should be plentiful with almost unrivaled goal threat, plus the potential to create opportunities for others. Crucially, while the likes of Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney fit the same profile, Suarez stands alone in a Liverpool side without competition for his start and with little chance of rest and rotation biting.

And yet, there is an element of mistrust when it comes to Suarez. In reality and in the Fantasy realm he is perhaps the most exasperating of talents. Shots come in from all angles, one-on-one opportunities are missed, half-chances go wayward. So often Suarez has shown the intent and ability to fetch big points hauls, without delivering; except, it seems, when Delia is watching.

With a slew of options tussling for three striker slots, the fervour to grab Suarez off the back of his trip to East Anglia is somewhat dampened. He remains a gamble and one for the high rollers.

However, there is plenty of logic on show: if Liverpool have turned a corner with Saturday’s 5-2 win, then Suarez will surely be in line to profit with three home games in the next four. Stoke, Reading and Newcastle visit Merseyside, with a delicious but potentially tempestuous derby clash at Goodison looming in Gameweek 9. That boiling pot is perhaps one concern for investors; Suarez’ trips out to Argentina and Bolivia after this weekend presents another.

Suarez is never an easy option, never a player who offers comfort and assured returns. He’s a world class talent who can detonate points and controversy in equal measure. Those who acquire his services are certain of a thrilling ride; those who ignore him will be hoping that he somehow finds a way to frustrate once again.

The Team

Spurs are in our sights once more. They featured here following the win at Reading but that did little to prepare us for the events of Saturday’s trip to Old Trafford. It seems we’re being forced to reassess Andre Villas-Boas’ side with every passing week.

Back in Gameweek 4 it was Gareth Bale and Jermain Defoe who drew the attention. While Bale remains a delicious midfield option, the win over United brought further alternatives to the fore.

Jan Vertonghen’s tackle on Junior Hoilett in Gameweek 5’s win over QPR demonstrated his defensive prowess, his opening goal against United showed his attacking potential. Having notched in the Capital One Cup, it’s clear that the Belgian has arrived and his threat is revealed. Fantasy managers, starved of clean sheets and coming around to the allure of attacking defenders led by Leighton Baines, will now be contemplating Vertonghen. We’ll discuss him further later this week.

The Belgian has been freed at left-back as a result of Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s injury, which has in-turn introduced Tottenham fans to the talents of Steven Caulker. It remains to be seen if he can now cement a starting role while Younes Kaboul remains sidelined – if he can, Caulker is another who could draw interest.

Clint Dempsey’s goal also marked his return to the fray. Starting in a central role, tucked in behind Defoe, the American appears to have the opportunity to banish Gylfi Sigurdsson to a season of cameo appearances from the bench. Dempsey’s goal power is undoubted, his potential only dented by the new consistency being shown by Bale as the midfield option of choice in the Villas-Boas revolution.

With Emmanuel Adebayor set to enter the picture soon, the landscape could change again. Tottenham appear to be a moveable feast with Bale the headline act, amongst a string of worthy differentials.

The Talking Point

Bale’s resurgence sums up a common conundrum that faces Fantasy managers. We’ve previously discussed the merits of showing patience with proven class, waiting for form and resisting the surge from short-term bandwagons.

Owners of Eden Hazard and Michu have been subjected to three consecutive blanks as the backdrop to Bale’s string of returns. That would have been painful for those who sacrificed the Welshman to acquire two players who began the season in explosive style but have since fizzled out. However, Bale demonstrates that sitting still can pay off.

Both Hazard and Michu are clearly big talents but there are concerns about the Belgian’s role now that a rejuvenated Juan Mata has returned to Roberto Di Matteo’s lineup, while Michu is suffering from Swansea’s recent demise.

This weekend promises to be a turning point. Both have strong fixtures which promise returns. Hazard currently leads our captain poll, emphasising that confidence in him has yet to totally evaporate. Fail to deliver against Norwich and he’ll likely suffer significant sales ahead of encounters with Spurs and United.

Michu may just get two bites. He has home fixtures with Reading and Wigan – grand opportunities for Michael Laudrup to restore confidence. If Swansea are to score goals, it’s difficult to imagine Michu being out of pocket.

Faith in the Spaniard is easier to show, then, but with Mata and the likes of David Silva, Bale and Santi Cazorla on offer, it’s Hazard that is under pressure. There’s little doubt he has the class – it’s now down to whether he’ll get enough opportunity to show it in Saturday’s crucial window. Hazard is rested to the bench for tonight’s Champions League tie in Denmark – that could well prove significant. Norwich could be in the firing line again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Chances of RVP starting this weekend? Played 180 minutes so far this week, and United have plenty of strikers at their disposal.

Is it worth selling Cazorla this week just to get Bale in this week for free? I'll probably end up buying him back for 9.3m in my probable WC during the Int. Break next week...

West Ham are quite tight at home, but I my gut is telling me this will be a 3-2 win for the Gunners...

Obviously, I want Bale, but I don't want to bring him in in place of someone else who also gets a haul...

The rest of my midfield is Michu, Pienaar, McClean, Sterling... can only afford Michu to Bale for a free, swapping with McClean would take a hit...

    Thanks

I guess, although you have unlimited transfers at your disposal which means you can have anyone you want regardless, within limits...

I can't quite figure out in my head how West Ham will play this one... they will probably tackle hard and press hard, I'm not sure how it will affect Arsenals passing game... or if they fancy a win and open up a bit, I can see Cazorla profiting from that...

It just seems easier to rely on Bale...

That is the exact move I was considering earlier in the week, and depending on how the CL plays out, might still be the right call...

The only problem I have with that, is that now Mancini is likely to continue playing 4-2-3-1, I can see Citeh finally regaining some defensive solidity...

I just know his first CS will come when I take him out, along with a goal and assist to compound issues... 😕

Yes I somewhat agree with you there...

I don't want to take a hit, but I'm not sure that my will to avoid taking a hit is stronger than my will to get Bale...

I certainly don't mind losing 0.2m on Cazorla if it means I'm 10pts better off...

If you plan for WC during the Int. Break next week, I would definitely do Caz -> Bale today.

Away game at West Ham could be tight as we have seen they have done so far. I believe you can juggle the fund and find 0.2m if you need Caz back in the squad next week.

Keeping Michu for two good games and enjoying Bale on the weekend.

I can't help but think you've missed the boat in terms of transferring out Tevez and Berbatov before price drops.

Ba has risen 0.5 at least and Jelly isn't cheap as such, so the timing seems wrong. FWIW, I'm going to be looking at getting Berbatov in after the international break, so might be worth keeping now?

Decision time.. Four candidates to fund the move of Ben Arfa -> Bale. Which best from your view?

A: Rangel -> Davies ... A bit downgrade and sideway move, but Swan have RDG, WIG coming.
B: Rangel -> Wilson ... Stoke is impressive : SUN, nor, QPR, whm coming from Gw9 onwards.
C: Tevez -> Ba ... Alternative to Ben Arfa, but I will then have no City.
D: Tevez -> Jelavic ... Is it too risk to triple Everton? (+Baines & Fellaini)

    Foster (QPR)
Baines (wig) - Jenkinson (whm) - *Rangel (RDG)
Fellaini (wig) - Cazorla (whm) - Hazard (NOR) - *Barfa (MUN)

I like Tevez to Ba in your case. Hazard out for Silva or RVP out for Aguero are easy swaps in the coming weeks if City coverage becomes necessary. Sunderland have been pretty good so I would expect a sort of ho-hum 1-0 or 2-1 win for City, so not giant points for Tevez.

IMO. Barfa's potential has significantly dropped since Pardew plays 4-4-2. I might be wrong, but I think I have seen less shots and less chances of him getting in the box. So, I think the move to get Bale should increase chance for point.

Thanks for the advice for Wilson. It's really for long-term. A bit reluctant as it means I double Stoke at the back, but they are doing well so far.

Of those options C is what appeals to me... I would, however, wait until we see what happens in the CL first before making any decisions, sure you'll lose 0.1 selling value, but that is worth it to get a better feel for how Mancini plans to use Tevez in Sunderland game...

I can see Newcastle scoring a couple of goals, and Ba is highly likely to be involved...

I'm considering the exact same move to fund my McClean to Bale option... for a hit, though...

Thanks Zep for the logical advice. I know it's more safe to see what Mancini plans. But, as Scoutcast said above, Sunderland has been impressive so far and I could do Hazard -> Silva next week for City cover.

I'm so tempted to make the move today as it will avoid 0.1m drop of Tevez, 0.1m rise of Bale, and Ba will surely rise 0.1m tomorrow. It might be a talk of value, but I think these players can handsomely return points spent on hits.

To be honest I think Sunderlands fixtures are not much worse than evertons and that for 1m you save having fletcher he might be the better option. Also consider he has no competition really, and starts as their only out and out striker. Plus his form has been consistent unlike jelavics who has had one fantastic weak against the leagues most leaky team.

Thoughts on RVP > Lambert, Malone > Bale. 4pt hit.

    team would be:

    Foster/Begovic

    Baines/Jenkinson/Clark/Demel/Gorkks
    Cazorla/Bale/Pienaar/Dyer/Guthrie
    Aguero/Torres/Lambert

United fixtures are not easy, but I still believe United could score against everyone. If I would downgrade one, it would be Torres as I think he is less explosive than Aguero and RvP.

Is it enough for funding Bale move?

    D) Barfa + RVP -> Bale + Suarez (-4)

Nah. Mata might have a good week this coming GMWk (saying that he might be rested for part of an easy home game as he played full 90 twice in the last week). Plus after that the fixtures get hard. I find it hard to justify getting involved in any of chelseas 3 attacking mids with silva, bale and cazorla around.

I'm finding it hard to believe Bale fever tonight. Especially to have him for Chelsea and Villa - sure they are H games, but both could be very tight. Chelsea have seemingly the only decent defence in the PL, and Villa could park the bus.

I've owned him all year, and did come very close to ditching after week 3 - mostly luck I didn't. I think the lesson is he is a long term player - people ditching RVP and/or taking 4 point hits to get him in could look very daft.

Growing reasonably fond of 4pt hits. Done it last 3 weeks in a row and all factors considered ended up better off each time. Mixture of gut, form and fixtures. Just done 4th, tev + fellaini> bale and lambert. Plan on settling with team with no further hits for foreseeable future, just pointing out it can work out well. Also had team value in mind, so hopefully will come on strong after January. Rank 13k. Thanks to members for comments also, regularly browse forum and hope to join soon!

I vowed not to take hits unnecessarily this year...

Took my first one last week, and whilst I broke even, I managed to set my team up better for the long term...

Now I'm looking at another this week in an attempt to justify keeping my WC...

Agree with Randymarsh. Absolutely nothing wrong with taking hits, as long as you can logically justify how you think its more likely to launder you greater points overall. I guess you should use your WC if you look at your team and think "this absolutely sucks" or if you urgently need to make 4 or more transfers.

I'd rather take a 4pt hit then use my WC anyday. Prob even an 8pt hit tbh. Save wc for march/April when there's some mad dgw. Ure hit involves bale right? He looks approaching must have IMO. Don't ditch rvp though, although costly is fantasy gold, fixture proof and (c) material. Price makes me keep looking at him but would hate him not in my team.

Yeah ba looks a great pick at the mo. only reason I didn't do him instead of lambert was I own hba. I had tevez from start and felt now was time to sell, as so much uncertainty over game time. before start of season when I got him in as an original at like 6% owernship or something, after 6gws a nice haul and .4 selling profit I wud shake ure hand off. He drops tonite so I lose .1 selling profit. The time is right imo. Shame he dropped tonight so couldn't get a better idea from tomorrows fixture, form and game time etc. Basically really wanted bale and he rises too.
