Canned pies may not be the only famous export of Fray Bentos for long if Southampton’s Gaston Ramirez carries on impressing in the Premier League. Born in the aforementioned Uruguayan town 21 years ago, this highly-rated attacking midfielder was signed by the south coast club at the eleventh hour of the summer transfer window for a club record £12m from Bologna.

His Premier League debut was something of a baptism of fire, coming on as a substitute during Arsenal’s 6-1 mauling of Nigel Adkins’ promoted side, but Ramirez’s talents were already in evidence. Positioned just behind lone striker Rickie Lambert, the new boy created one of the Saints’ best chances in the game with a fine pass, which Lambert ended up skewing wide.

More was to come in his first start, in Gameweek 5’s home hammering of Aston Villa. Once again slotted in just behind Lambert, he gained an assist and a respectable EA Sports Index tally in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game of 21; not quite enough for bonus points but an indication of his future Fantasy potential. Despite Southampton losing 3-1 to Everton in Gameweek 6 at Goodison last weekend, Ramirez continued to shine, playing the full 90 minutes and scoring his side’s only goal.

Throughout his fledgling career goals have been a hallmark of his play, scoring 12 in 58 appearances for Bologna during his two-year stint at the club, including eight in his final Serie A season. The indications are that he could even make double figures this term if Southampton continue to pursue their attacking style of play.

While among the priciest of Southampton midfielders at 6.0 in the FPL game, Ramirez still represents something of a bargain if he continues to play in “the hole”. He is currently the top midfielder for the Saints in terms of FPL points per game, with an average of 4.3. Priced at 5.5 in the Sky Sports game, the Uruguayan he is also proving profitable, notching 18 points after just two starts.

Intriguingly, Ramirez looks a strong differential across the Fantasy games – only 0.4% of FPL managers have currently acquired his services, while even less (0.3%) in the Sky Sports game have decided he’s worth a flutter. With a strong run of fixtures over the next six Gameweeks, (FUL, wha, TOT,wba, SWA, qpr) Lambert will no doubt pick up plenty of interest, affording Ramirez the chance to sneak under the radar and plunder the points until the bandwagon inevitably begins.

It has seemed like 3 mid priced strikers has been the way to go for a while now, but it's that very facet of this game that makes me question it...

I think we will see a constant rise and fall of the optimum team shape with season...

It started with everyone thinking a big hitter was a necessity, now 3 mid priced is all the rage... so I won't be surprised to see it swing back to big hitters soon... all it takes is a few big successive RVP/Aguero scores and the balance is tipped...

          That's why I'm keeping RVP..

The DZ living up to its name eh. Obviously nothing to discuss.

Hmm, let me think. Who should I bench last, Demel (ARS) or Clark (tot).

So I'm on a WC at the moment and have frankly been playing it terribly. I can never make up my mind and this has resulted in an extreme drop in team value.

Still, I think that the team I have composed is pretty strong, what do you guys think?

    Begovic
    Hughes; Gibbs; Baines
    Bale; Cazorla; Silva; Fellaini
    Ba; Suarez; Lambert

I like it a lot. Maybe get someone better in for hughes? Or does he rotate well with demel?

One thing that I would say, is that it seems strange avoiding manchester strikers, due to the rotation headaches, and then getting silva. He will be rotated just as much as the strikers I reckon.

the only real reason im avoiding manchester strikers is price tbh, I really can't think of many decent midpriced midfielders that I could get if I get a heavy striker. any that you would recommend with the 7.6 I would have?

I wouldn't get a heavy striker. I have pienaar and barfa in my team for your silva and sterling. My team is completely flexible with baines, bale, and santi playing every game, and the rest rotating. I have planned it out, and there is always at least 3 outfield players with bad fixtures who are easy to bench.

I can see Stoke maintaining there home form easily... Soton will get better defensively with their good fixtures, I think, which is why I'm keeping Clyne in my WC team...

I prefer Hughes over Nelsen when rotating with Clyne, and Fulham are very solid at home...

Sure West Ham have had some easy home games so far, but they have proven that they can keep it tight...

It kinda does make sense to me, since I'm always left frustrated when the likes of Zab get me nothing every week...

But you ALWAYS have to bench at least one. If one week all of your forward players have a good fixture, its likely that there will be a week when more than one have a bad fixture.

The trouble is you just never know with forwards, most of the mid priced forwards are all capable of scoring against anyone. They can be very hit and miss and thus difficult to predict.

Of course. But unless you have a pure bench sitter (ie guthrie), you are going to have to make a decision. That decision is made much easier if one of your mid priced forwards is away at stoke or man city!!

Sure but why not bench a mid priced mid instead? perhaps on a rotation basis with another mid

In saying that China I would suggest that Sterling is essentially a bench sitter most of the time except when one of the others has a really bad fixture.

Clyne and Sterling. They are the cheapest and most logical to bench. Nothing worse than having a big name on the bench who goes on to do well.

    Morning all
Question : Bale needs another 26k (NTI) to trigger another price increase. Do you think this will happen by c 3am Saturday ? (I know transfers accelerate nearer to deadline but am not sure by how much)
I appreciate any answer will probably be guesswork but a reasoned stab would also be helpful.
    Thanks

Have a few questions regarding this upcoming Gameweek:

    This is my team

    Foster

    Demel Clyne Baines Cole

    Michu Cazorla Pienaar Hazard

    RVP Lambert

    Vorm Saylor Puncheon Berbatov

I realise there are a few glaring errors with this team, such as the Soton players - however Puncheon did seem like a reasonable bet a few weeks ago, before he lost his place in the starting 11, getting 3 assists, perhaps he'll come good soon in this reasonably good run of fixtures that Soton have. Lambert for me will be crucial to anything good Soton do.

I was one of those who initially had Bale, he did nothing, then i brought Hazard, who's done nothing. Should i go back to Bale? Or go bring Bale in for Cazorla?

El Ahmadi looks a reasonable 5th mid now I look at it.. most points out of any other 4.5 mids.. however the thing that turns me away from any kind of Villa player is, well, they are a poor side with no goals lol

That midfield is exactly the midfield I think will become the new FFS standard in a few weeks time so I like it a lot. The front 3 are ace as well, the only difference for me is that Berb may become an option once again in the near future. My thoughts would be to consider downgrading Ba for Berbatov and upgrade one of your defenders to say Gibbs/Rafael etc.
